Fantastic!.......2007-07-31
I really love this music. It is obviously music set to scenes, as it doesn't flow like a tune on its own would. But very catchy phrases. I enjoy listening to this CD again and again. If you love the DVDs you will appreciate this CD.
Edmonson Captures Browncoat Spirit.......2007-07-29
When watching the original Firefly series, the music struck me as being intrinsic to the style and feel - the idea if you will - of Joss Whedon's future worlds. The opening title theme immediately captures the expectations of the viewer, and the incidental music combines the western and eastern cultures seamlessly throughout the action. This CD contains excerpts and highlights from the television series, and from Big Bar Fight to Dying Ship, fans of the series will be undoubtedly delighted to reminisce with the soundtrack. Greg Edmonson's compositions manages to combine the stereotypical American western motifs many of us are familiar with, and creates an extraordinary hybrid with oriental and eastern influences that constantly remind the listener of the bizarre yet effective (and believable) amalgamation of major world powers that has occurred within the Firefly universe. The soundtrack communicates, as only a soundtrack can, the diverse range of influences and emotions contained in the series. From confrontations with Reavers, Niska and Early (each taking into account the difference in character and situation), to the heart wrenching predicament of River and Simon, and through the various episodes of the series, Edmonson has composed, with almost impossible premise and parameters, a beautiful and appropriate (if there is such a thing) soundtrack. Despite the terrific work on the movie release - Serenity - which was in itself an extraordinary achievement, it is a shame that Greg Edmonson was not responsible for the soundtrack to that, too. This CD must be recommended to any Browncoat, for the Independence lives, and fights on in music.
Great Music!.......2007-07-16
I absolutely loved this CD. It captures all of the music from the series. The majority of the music is very serene and calming. Its a great mix of acoustical guitar, Celtic and traditional Chinese (flute) music. Listening to the CD takes me back to the shows.
Greg Edmonson did an excellent job composing the music. He really captured the essence of the show. I think it was a bad move on Joss Whedon's part to not go with Edmonson for the movie's soundtrack (Serenity). This CD is a must have for great music lovers, be it acoustic, classical or Celtic. This is one of my favorite soundtracks of all time.
Must Have Soundtrack With a Few Omissions.......2007-07-08
Anyone who loved Firefly should own this album. Not only can you show your support for the franchise, but you get to listen to the great work of Greg Edmonson whenever you like. About half of the tracks are memorable favorites that will immediately bring back vivid memories of the show and the remainder are still good now and then.
Like the movie soundtrack for Serenity, the only real down side is the absence of one or two small pieces. In this case, the absence of The Hero of Canton from the episode Jaynestown is something that must be made up with a download from the internet.
Firefly is the best small time t.v. sound track.......2007-05-13
This CD is the best 'small time' t.v. sound track. No big sound or spectacular songs, but the music moves you back to the time of the Old Wild West meets new Country Western.

Joseph Lamb, a white musician who lived from 1887 to 1960, was considered one of the major ragtime composers of his era. By the end of his life, he had fallen into total obscurity, and even the ragtime revival hasn't made him a household name. His rags are different in style from Scott Joplin's, generally briefer and simpler in construction but still filled with lovely melodies and unaffected charm. The "American Beauty Rag," from which this disc takes its name, is only one of Lamb's many delicious miniatures (most of them under three minutes). Virginia Eskin has the style of this music down perfectly. She plays with just the right tempos (a trifle faster than would be appropriate for most of Joplin) and a lyrical sensitivity that doesn't prevent her from showing rhythmic drive. We're used to more than 49 minutes of music on most CDs, but 20 of Lamb's rags in a row are enough for one listening session. Don't give up before you reach the last one, though; "Nightingale Rag" is one of Lamb's best. A fascinating byway in American music is effectively explored and presented in realistic sound. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
American Sorta-Beauties.......2007-05-06
Ms. Eskin certainly can play piano. She can certainly read music. And she can combine the two well enough. What I found most distracting about this album, however, isn't the fact that she doesn't repeat many of the measures. It's that she tends occasionally to hit clinkers. After the first one or two, I found myself listening more closely for mistakes than actually enjoying the music. Another problem with this album is that her renditions are too bulky and heavy. I've heard much cleaner-sounding performances of Lamb's work.
I paid the money so I don't intend to return the CD. But it'll play well enough in my noisy car driving to and from work.
Good, but not great.......2005-10-10
I have owned this album since June 2000, and it inspired me at the time to find out more online and even to compose some rags of my own. It turns out that many of the melodies are made more "logical" by Eskin. However, she does use too much pedal, and she also does not take most of the repeats. It is unfortunate that she repeats only the first strain of "Ragtime Reverie," for there are no on-demand recordings of that work over the Internet.
good.......2005-07-31
its a good album but not very good
first of all in several rags virgina doesn't repeat where it says it must. second she plays several rags way to fast. Joe lamb was just like the others that ragtime must not be played fast the feeling get lost in the a rag that is played to fast like ragtime nightingale. I have the sheetmusic myself and it says "slow march tempo" not fast like virginia it plays.
but its a good album she plays with flair and style
Exquisite!.......2002-12-29
Joseph F. Lamb is generally thought of as one of the three greatest of the classical ragtime composers, the others being Scott Joplin and James Scott. It's a matter of taste, but many rank him almost as highly as Joplin, and this exquisite album shows why. Lamb's rags typically soar with wonderful, reverie-evoking melodies, unmatched in the ragtime canon. These melodies are offset by original, exciting, brisk passages. Virginia Eskin executes these gems wonderfully. She presents them always at the proper tempo and as written, without the filigrees that are so common in ragtime playing (Lamb doesn't need them!). The only drawback -- and it is a very minor one -- is that she sometimes treads a little too heavily on the pedal. This album is essential in even a small ragtime collection. In my large collection, it is one of my favorite and oft-played treasures.
Excellent Rags Played with Gusto.......2002-08-04
Up until Joseph Lamb, the only ragtime composer who could satisfy me was Scott Joplin. These rags are excellent and distinctly different from Joplin's, although both composers are obviously from the same genre. According to the liner notes, they even knew each other.
The pianist has a great love of the material, and it shows in her playing.
I highly recommend this CD to all fans of ragtime.

Just plain great to listen to...........2006-09-27
Even with the year old classics like Mal's Song and the Ballad of Joss, which bring back great memories of Firefly and Serenity, I believe the power of this soundtrack lies in its instrumental tracks. I was moved to buy this after watching the documentary. But from folk to ballad to whimsical, this is a great soundtrack to listen to regardless if you want Firefly music or just good music.
May be even better than the documentary.......2006-09-21
If you're a Firefly fan, you've no doubt heard some of these songs before. The Bedlam Bards' "Ballad of Joss" and Michelle Dockrey's "Mal's Song" have been making the rounds for over a year now, and several of the other artists have been performing at conventions around the country. But this CD collects all of your favorites and adds some new ones in, including some instrumental versions that are just beautiful.
It's not a sequel or a new season, but close your eyes and let this collection take you back to the 'verse.

Queen of Songs.......2007-07-29
I received this CD 'San Fracisco and other Jeanette MacDonald Favorites' a few days ago and have listened to it carefully several times. She is about a generation before my time; so far I have seen only two pictures of her: 'San Francisco' and 'The Merry Widow'. In San Francisco, I discovered she can also sing opera successfully to some degree As for The Merry Widow, I much prefer the later version performed by Lana Turner and Fernando Lamas although Turner didn't sing by herself in the film and Lamas is a lot more convincing than Maurice Chevalier as a Casanova type beau; to be truthful, I can't stand grandpa Chevalier. I beleive I also saw another of her movie which she played quite late in her career because she played mother to Jane Powell, this one I saw in the theater in my teenage days, for your information, I saw almost every MGM musicals in those heyday years. Unfortunately though, I don't quite remember the story of it, but I do remember vaguely that MacDonald sang Un bel di from Puccini's Madama Butterfly and when she sang she formed her mouth so beautifully that one could forget it if she didn't sing well.
One thing I can assert with confidence is that MacDonald is a very beautiful lady oozes with glamour, and is very classy. Classiness was a very prominent and widespread quality of female stars in that era, Lana Turner who played the wealthy merry widow was just one case. If I were to make a list it would occupy a full page, nowadays, it would be impossible to name just three or four female stars with class, no offense, please. Now let me come back to the main subject that is MacDonald's art of singing. Well, she certainly has good vocal technigue, her high note is firm to the very top and she is able to sustain it for a considerable duration as she has displayed quite often in this disc. The voice itself is delicate and sweet, just like her person. However, she tends to sing with monotone which make her singing sounds bland, like no. 4, Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life, may be if she move a notch down the scale it would sound more pleasant. Songs My Mother Taught Me is just about the only song she successfully sings with feelings. Here, I would like to point out that a few songs are worth repeated listenings: Ciribiribin, The Donkey Serenade, Italian Street Song, and of course, Songs My Mother Taught Me.
Songs no. 16 to 22, I'm sorry to say that they are not up to my standard, I have been listening to opera singing for over thirty years you know. I must mention here that MacDonald's French seems very good, I don't know French though, nevertheless, I can tell just by listening
Queen of Songs is a title crowned her by the Chinese people in that time, she was indeed highly esteemed.
Jeanette MacDonald Favorites.......2007-05-13
This CD is an incredible testimony and celebration of an American Master Singer.
A must have for all. An introduction to quality and good taste for a new generation of music lovers.
A MUST for any Jeanette fan!.......2006-04-25
This CD is a gem! The songs included on it are beautiful and show off MacDonald's incredible voice. The best part of this CD, however, is the sound quality. Unlike many of her other recordings, and those featuring her with frequent costar Nelson Eddy, the sound on this CD is pristine, and you can barely tell the recordings are 50+ years old!
Jeanette MacDonald Was Unique.......2001-03-12
It really doesn't matter whether or not she could sing; Jeanette MacDonald was unique. On these old recordings, her voice sounds thin and watery, and contemporary tastes do not respond so readily to the sentimentality and predictability of her movies. But she was a gracious lady and glittering presence on the silver screen. These film songs do suggest the excitement she generated when her movies first appeared. And how many truly major singers she inspired! Joan Sutherland recalled meeting MacDonald a few years before her death. Said Sutherland: "I still had stars in my eyes."
An excellent demonstration of Jeanette MacDonald's artistry.......1998-12-18
The highlights of this Jeanette MacDonald CD include her excellent singing of Delibes' "Les Filles de Cadiz," the Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria," and the "Jewel Song" from "Faust." A much-underrated artist, MacDonald proves here that she can handle a wide range of music, from concert songs and opera arias to familiar tunes from her operetta films. Particularly fine are her renditions of "Only a Rose," and Herbert's "Romany Life" (in spite of an amateurish male chorus). Highly recommended not only as a tribute to filmdom's first lady of song, but also to listeners who enjoy both opera and musical comedy.

Spoiled Occasion.......2005-01-09
I love Greg Adams' tone. Whether playing muted trumpet or the open horn, his tone and style of playing are first rate. He is a gifted musician with a knack for writing catchy melodies with bounce, vibe and groove. What spoils this recording for me is the electronic drums, bass and keyboards. They manage to weigh this music down to the point of suffocating the life right out of these wonderful tracks. The lively brass section manages to keep this music afloat but Adams deserves much better. He should lose the programming and get live musicians to play this music and I guarantee that this disc will crackle like a roaring forest fire. Greg sounds great throughout this disc, but the musical experience is short lived because the vibe is so mechanical and soul-less. This talented musicain needs to hook up with a great bassist (like a Brian Bromberg or Nathan East) and strong drummer (like a Omar Hakim or David Garibaldi). A vibrant pianist (like a Joe Sample or David Benoit) who uses electronics for background colorations would breath new life into this music. With a good band vibing with him, Mr. Adams can then stretch out and soar to musical heights not achieved here. Come on Greg, Get it done!!!
Smoothjazz.com Review.......2004-11-17
Greg is one smooth operator, and one of the hottest players in Smooth Jazz. And I mean hot in every way possible. Not just his arrangements and musicianship, but everything from his platinum coiffure, to his snazzy attire; from his affectionate demeanor in person to his artful horns that actually look more like fine art than instruments. He's just got a way about him that oozes smooth and hip. This from the guy that knows exactly "What Is Hip." The former Tower of Power trumpeter has been turning heads in our format for a decade and this new release is no exception. Again, the term that comes to mind, is HOT (all caps). Sizzling, in fact. From the first/title track, which is a current hit, the infectious, "Firefly," this listener is hooked. Put this in your car for your morning commute and you'll want to just keep driving. My favorite thing about Greg Adams' albums is his sensitivity to song order. His tracking creates an over all sense of continuity and consistency that makes for an ideal listening experience. The progression on FIREFLY is divine. The entire album is captivating, as only a Greg Adams CD can be, so singling out songs is tough, but we really dig the fun "5 North" (because we know where this road leads), the sensual "The Crossing," (next single?) and the elegant and sophisticated, "She's Still Waiting," Tower fans check out "Love Motive." Smooth Jazz fans, buy this record, it's an essential! ~Sandy Shore

" Too Much! ".......2002-01-17
I have always been curious about Emily Remler. I had heard so much about her talent, but never heard her playing, until buying this CD. Let's just say that this is about as perfect as a Jazz album can be...it's very easy to listen to, and all of the musicians are tops in their field. A few comments need to be made about the musicians who appear on this album with Remler. Pianist Hank Jones (my personal favorite pianist), bassist Bob Maize, and drummer Jake Hanna. Hanna and Maize offer warm, swinging support to all involved, and never get in the way, which is one reason the album is so effortless to listen to, and Hank Jones is, well, Hank Jones.
Now for Remler. She graduated Berklee College of Music at age 18, and recorded this album, her first as a leader, in 1981 at the age of 24. Listening to her playing, you would think that this was a player of vastly more experience and years. Being a Jazz musician myself I feel that I know a little bit about musicians and their talent levels, and I can honestly say that with this being the first time I actually heard Remler, I was very surprised at what I heard. She plays with a very easy style, and does not fall prey to the mistake that a lot of players make--playing too many notes just to show how fast they can play. She gets a very easy to listen to Jazz tone from her guitar, and her solos are constructed very intelligently. She goes for musicality rather than showmanship, and it pays off well.
While there is no clear cut "best" tune on the album, the seldom heard but very beautiful bossa by A.C. Jobim called "Look to the Sky" is very beautifully played. While Remler is a fine soloist, her exicution of cool, well placed chords is equally impressive.
All in all, this is a very fine album. On the liner notes there is a quote from the famous Jazz author, W. Royal Stokes. It reads...."Remler is a prodigy and a phenomenon....Too much!" Indeed.

This was heck a show, and the CD is as close as we can get to it!.......2006-02-20
We went to Shirley M.'s live show about 20 years ago and tremendously enjoyed ourselves. Around then we purchased the disk that we played numerous times. With the change from longplay discs to CD's the disc ended up where they all do..in a box in the garage... Now the CD came out, I bought it and since played it 50 times...great show, great songs, great atmoshphere..
Steel Shirley.......2004-09-24
I encourage any fans of live performance artists and entertainers alike to add to this to your collection. Since seeing Shirley live these days is a rarity; this might be the closest we can get. Her stirring renditions of, "If My Friends Could See Me Now," & "She's a Star," get you going and you will be humming and singing them to yourself for a week! Shirley is an often forgotten "triple threat!" But she pulls out her triple threats and treats you to a unique trip into Shirley's world of song, dance, and acting. I also hope that DRG Records is able to put together a release of this show on DVD/VHS format or another of Shirley's live shows. I hope many people buy the live CD sending the message that Shirley is loved and that we want more! Shirley proves she is a seasoned pro and before she became a Steel Magnolia she proved her talent and grit on stage was solid as steel as well! Enjoy Shirley Maclaine Live At the Palace!
a great recording from a great star.......2003-02-08
This new reissue of Shirley MacLaine's album 'Live at the Palace' is a fantastic testimony to Ms MacLaine's musical talents (which aren't lauded nearly as much as her acting talents).
Ms MacLaine mounted her own solo show at the Palace Theatre in 1976, resulting in this live recording. She sings most of her numbers from the film version of SWEET CHARITY (in which she memorably starred) including "My Personal Property", "I'm a Brass Band" and "If My Friends Could See Me Now". She also sings the title song from IRMA LA DOUCE (although the film version is devoid of any musical moments), and delivers a reminisce of her favorite acting role - in 'Some Came Running' - before sliding into a rendition of "I'm a Person Too".
Ms MacLaine also talks about subbing for Carol Haney in the Broadway production of THE PAJAMA GAME, which catapulted her to stardom. It's obvious that dear Shirley is having a marvellous time here. I urge Broadway fans to snap this up; this is yet another lovely reissue from the good folks at DRG.
Shirley's Personality Shines.......2002-09-17
This album is a must for Shirley MacLaine fans! Her sparkling personality shines through each song she sings and each monologue she shares with the audience. One can only wish this dynamic performance was available on video. In my mind's eye I can almost see Shirley dancing as she performs at the Palace.
Remember you? As if we ever forgot!.......2002-05-22
The prejudice against Shirley MacLaine's performance in the 1969 film of "Sweet Charity" has always mystified me. Okay, so she wasn't Gwen Verdon - who was? She contributed, in a scene of almost unwatchable pain and desperation, one of the most shattering moments in post-war cinema. She was charming, sweetly funny, vulnerable and heart-breakingly hopeful. She sang with humor, gusto, and intense, if delicate, emotion. And she danced the hell out of those great, knock-knee'd Bob Fosse numbers. If her Charity isn't the finest performance in a movie musical since Judy Garland and James Mason slashed the heart in "A Star is Born," I don't know what is. All of what Shirley MacLaine can do best is in that movie, and in this great 1976 live recording. Parts of the extravaganza may feel a bit overdone, a touch self-conscious (if not downright self-congratulatory), and the often effective Cy Coleman arrangements may occasionally border on aggressive showbiz-iness. But Shirley MacLaine's electric gifts shine through. If she hasn't got you by the time she gets through her passionate, whirl-wind rendition of "She's a Star," you're probably beyond gettin'. So, now that Shirl is finally on CD ... Decca - where's that "Sweet Charity" soundtrack?

Awesome!.......2000-04-22
Tony has such an awesome voice and Ronni's guitar playing is killer! But the band wouldn't be complete without Morty great bass playing! TNT rocks!
Ronni Le Tekrö.......1999-09-02
I like the old TNT did not like the studio albums but the live songs are awesome. Ronni Le Tekrö's solos are unbelievable. but when I listened Ronni's solo album I was shocked.there was almost no solo in his solo record amd it sounds like modern
A very good buy!.......1999-08-07
I bought my first TNT record in 1984, and I have been a true fan ever after. This Norwegian band really rocks. "Firefly" was long awaited when it came out, and it proved once again the potential of the band. TNT probably has the best heavy metal guitar player in the world today. Ronnie Le Tekroe is god. Forget all about Malmsteen, Satriani and all the other would-be guitar players. Ronnie stands second to none. The reason why I only give four stars is because TNT is moving away from their origin. The hard and heavy standard set in their release of "Knights of the new thunder" has somewhat dissappeard. But "Firefly" is a good buy, even though to a first time TnT listener I have to recomend "Knights of the new thunder", probably THE best heavy metal album of the 80's!
Pop Metal Progression.......1999-05-18
TNT's music is excellent in its form. I definitely recommend to sample the 1st track. Ronnie le Tekro is by far (to my view) the fastest shredder in the land. At times he holds back but when he lets go..wow! its really hard to tell if his executing tremolo's or shredding the fretboard, this guy is a virtuoso. He is crafty using melodies too. Harnell's vocals matches his guitar playing. Very talented musicians on top of their form. I like best the tracks "Tripping" & Firefly".
The New Thunder!!!.......1999-04-06
Simple and direct;the CD rocks!Especially the live stuff. The songs that stand out in my mind are "Daisy Jane"and"Month Of Sundays".One of the most underrated bands of the 80's.They never really made it big here;but I love the music.I guess you must be a fan to understand.Recommended to any TNT fan or hard rock in general

Amazon.com's Best of 2000
Okinawa by way of Honolulu? That's the recipe for Jin Jin/Firefly, the delightful collaboration between Japanese folk musician Takashi Hirayasu and Hawaiian steel-guitar master Bob Brozman. Instrumental virtuosity, tunes that transcend any language, and spirited improvising reshape the notion that roots music can only come from the tree of one culture. --Jason Verlinde
Amazon.com
Ever since the early '80s, when Ry Cooder ferreted out the music of Shoukichi Kina of Okinawa, there has been a small underground of fans who had to be satisfied with occasional compilations and expensive Japanese imports to sate their appetite for this island's easygoing folk music. Bob Brozman, long an aficionado of Pacific island sounds, is the next logical collaborator, and this music with Takashi Hirayasu takes "back porch" to new levels. They hunkered down in a small shack on the small island of Taketomi, Brozman with his steels, slides, and other guitars, Hirayasu with his sanshin, a small fretless lute, and his casual vocal style, and played some funky, mixed-up variations on Okinawan folk music. It's rife with blues, jazz, and Hawaiian touches, as each musician finds common ground and then shakes it around. Some may find the coarse recording sound a bit of a deterrent; it sounds like the back porch because it is, warts and all. That's its charm though, as two musicians with different backgrounds just sit together and jam into the night, offering lively folk-pop tunes and slow, beautiful love songs. --Louis Gibson
Customer Reviews:
wonderful.......2005-07-30
This is a wonderful album... I've been listening to it for 5 years and never get tired of the thing. It's almost a field recording... there's the occasional chicken, and other stray background sounds. The musicians seem to be having a great time. It's the best hang out and drink with friends album. Sadly their second collaboration is not nearly as good -- too much studio meddling.
A *great* album!
Fly Fly Hawaiian Spy Cowboys!.......2001-04-10
I've had this cd since the end of last year but I kept holding off on reviewing it. I just wasn't ready yet. There were things I didn't like about it so I took a break from it for a few months, revisiting it within the last few weeks. I still disagree with ... assertion that this is one of the Top 10 cd's of 2000. Honestly, it's not even the best Bob Brozman-related cd of 2000. Having said that, it's a very good cd once you get past the first tracks. Tracks 1 through 5 would get about 2 stars from me. Tracks 6 through the end of the cd would get 4 or 4 1/4. Overall, my true score for this cd would be 3.8 stars. That may sound bad but I don't mean it to be. Some people give 5 stars to every cd they buy that they don't hate... I try to be a little calmer when I hand out the stars.
My problem with the opening songs is that they are too sing-songy or something. They sound like a mixture of Okinawan Sesame Street and Okinawan MTV Unplugged. Simply put, they sound too normal for me. I was expecting (and hoping for) this entire cd to be quite alien to me. Instead, the opening songs sound like "acoustic pop tunes in a 'foreign' language". Not my thing. Tracks 6 through the end of the cd though are an entirely different story.
Track 6 itself, the title track, is fantastic. It strikes me as a OkinaHawaiian version of 1960's spy-film music. Both men are absolutely brilliant on this track in every aspect, from the singing and on to every note they play. Honestly, this tune is still not as Indigenous or "traditional" as I thought this cd would be, but it is fantastic nonetheless. At other times throughout the cd the music strikes me as Okinawan Roy Rogers. During it's best moments this cd really is a brand new music. Borrowing from many cultures but doing so in such a fluid, creative, and expressive way that it isn't forced. There is alot of "world music" out there that is purposefully "eclectic".. it ends up just being a mish-mash of diverse things that do not work together. This cd avoids that.
There is certainly more Western influence on this cd than I usually enjoy, but it still isn't that generic funk, rock, or hip-hop influenced fluff that permeates commercial Asian radio stations. Thank God! These 2 men have enough emotional power and incredible playing skills that they still end up with a musically successful cd. Something which most people could not do under these circmstances.
Entrancing.......2001-02-13
I can only think that the negative reviewers are not used to any singing that doesn't come out of american FM radio. This is a great CD. Brozman and Hirayasu have incredible chemistry that leaps right over language and culture barriers. Listening to this CD, I can hear all different kinds of music floating to the surface, then disappearing again: blues, jazz, okinawan folk music. Sometimes it sounds like american cowboy music. I could listen to this one a hundred times and still find something new each time.

This is a great record! My whole family digs it. We play it in our kitchen all the time. The feel is a relaxed cheerful exuberance. That is just what we need every day at breakfast time. Bob Brozman is a master of the international language of music.
