Customer Reviews:
songs of hope and reality.......2006-06-21
Polwart is a really fine singer, indeed, as her days with the Battlefield Band proved. she's just as fine a writer, offering songs that recognize life sometimes -- maybe often-- gives one hard knocks, but there is hope to be found, and courage to be drawn from one's deepest resources. I was first introduced to Polwart's work by Cathie Ryan, who herself has that hope and resilience thing going in her recent work as well. Polwart paints her world with in different hues, but if you like Ryan you should check out Polwart, and vice versa.
This is the way it should be!!.......2006-01-21
IF new talent could get past the big record labels and be given a chance you might hear innovative and talented recordings like this one once in a while. Karine is an artist and an amazing talent! Though she is weird as all get out and scared of butterflies, you will fall in love with this music and it will be your favorite album! We heard this Scottish lass at the Warwick Arts Centre recently and it was the highlight of our trip to Britain.

Hearing the great voice of Karine Polwart on Battlefield Band's album " Happy Days", I just had to get my hands on her debut solo release. I had to order it from the UK, which was not the economy way to get it, but was it ever worth it!!! This cd has hardly left my car cd player in the past few months. There is a deep melancholic edge to the album. Karine Polwart shows a wide variety in the delivery and style of the songs on this cd. The central theme of the album stresses the need to be self reliant,to look beneath the surface. This is an introspective work and there is not a weak song on the cd. Buy this album !!!!

Faultlines-A Masterpeice.......2007-01-04
Sometime around 1995, our local college station (WXPN-check it out!) played the top 50 albums of the year, as voted on by listeners. I don't remember what number "Faultlines" came in at, but I remember the effect it had on me. Matt Sevier is a master singer/songwriter, and "Faultlines" captured all of his talent and versatility. Until today, I believed that he was a native of California specifically because of the lyrics in his song, "Hills above Wilshire", and the title. I was amazed to find that he is living in the Philadelphia area, and still performing. See this artist, and buy his CD's.
Great music, nice guy.......2004-11-26
I have met Matt on several occasions. He even bought me a beer on my birthday on year. I have seen him play live several times over the past few years and always enjoyed it. Here is a guy who warrants more respect from the musical community. He is talented and can really play. In his live sets he can really improv and does covers even better than the original artists... anyway back to the album... my personal favorite on this album is 'Hills above Wilshire" which I always thought meant the hills above Wilshire in LA... but he told me it was a reference to a farm he worked on during college. The rest of the album is damned good too. This is an album where you will like all or almost all of the songs on it... not like some of those "one song is good, and the rest is junk" type of albums. Check it out, old fashioned pop / rock with a singer songwriter flair...you can't go wrong here if you are into good music.
Faultlines is faultless.......2001-11-30
i've enjoyed this CD for many years and look forward to hear more of what this artist can produce.
The songs are soothing yet sophisticated. Even my baby falls asleep to the song 'private world'.
superb songwriting.......2001-07-09
This record has excellent, artfully crafted songs, ballads and rockers alike, with intelligent lyrics, great pop hooks and beautiful vocals. Polished and well-produced. A step beyond the typical "sensitive singer-songwriter" material.
Great Lyrics, tasteful writing, very addictive.......1999-08-08
I saw this guy a few years ago while living in Philadelpia, and finally found his CD here. This is really intelligent music, with a very distinct voice. I recommend it to almost anyone. It's hard to compare, but it's a little mellencamp/dylan/costello, but some of the production is pretty ambitious. 4 stars.
