Concert & Radio: Sing Christmas
Concert & Radio: Sing Christmas
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
A live 1957 BBC recording of Alan Lomax and various singers, actors, ensembles, and players stationed around Britain, Ireland, and Scotland is remarkable on one level because everyone pulled it off without any technological glitches. But on another level, Sing Christmas and the Turn of the Year readily captures the true sense of community that occurred so long ago when thousands of families gathered around their radios as if they were roaring fireplaces. Lomax's guests include such well-known folksingers as Peggy Seeger, Ewan MacColl, Seamus Ennis, and others, with a variety of Christmas jigs, hymns, songs, and even a "Christmas Morning Calypso." Between songs, scripture is recited, bits of Christmas plays are reenacted, and one senses how special and exciting such a broadcast must have been. For anyone who loves the power of radio, or programs such as A Prairie Home Companion, this is a simply wonderful and astonishing gift from another time and place. Highly recommended for history buffs, radio fans, and those who love the season through all ages. --Martin Keller

Longtime listeners have seen it coming: it was only a matter of time before John Mayer dropped the pop star pretense and proved he could really bring it. Chalk it up to one too many Dave Matthews comparisons, or the cupcake-sweet residue stuck to his image after the success of "Your Body Is a Wonderland"--but something convinced Mayer it was time to take him game to the next level. With help from studio pros Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino, he succeeds on Try. If the muscled-up covers of Jimi Hendrix's "Wait Until Tomorrow" and Ray Charles' "I Got a Woman" don't scream "no more Mr. Nice Guy" loud enough, the brawn of blues-rock opener "Who Do You Think I Was" does for sure. Mixed in with the Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Clapton-esque stuff are a few mellow numbers--"Daughters," most notably, returns from Heavier Things alongside "Something's Missing"--but even those songs seem hopped up on rock-God hormones. This newfound sizzle can't fix everything; that segment of the music-buying public that would accuse the singer of having a voice like "a whispering midget" (to quote a customer review of Mayer's work) won't want to add this disc to their collection. The good news for Mayer, though, is that anybody with an ear for genuine rock'n'roll chops will. --Tammy La Gorce
Customer Reviews:
I wasn't a John Mayer fan until I heard this album.......2007-07-31
I hadn't heard anything from John Mayer in a while. I had given up on him when he came out with his first album, which was a little too "poppy" for my taste. I usually go for oldies, stevie ray vaughn and hendrix among some of my favorites (though I'm only 24). My friend gave me this album and told me I should try it and to trust him. I absolutely loved this album when I first heard it. Each song is more soulful than they were on their original albums. I actually prefer the versions of "Daughters" and "Gravity" on this album. The versions of these songs make the original versions sound like like the "plain, unsalted" version of potato chips - bland. For those who have said Mayer is a subpar guitar player, I don't think they have truly listened to the guitar parts on this album. Mayer improvises a lot more on this cd.I've seen a lot of people say, "He's no Hendrix" or "He's no Stevie Ray". He may not be, but the influence on the guitar work is definitely there. Mayer pulls out all the stops on this one and plays many songs in the style of Stevie Ray - and it works. You can hear the Hendrix influences on his guitar work all over the place. Even Mayer's voice is different than it usually is on his studio albums. He sounded more relaxed, but his voice sounded great. I only wish Mayer would deliver like this on his studio albums. He would be so great. He really put heart in this live version and you could tell he was relaxed, but that definitely didn't hurt his performance one BIT on this album.
Try! John Mayer Trio Live.......2007-07-27
John's good in the studio, and perhaps better on stage.
This is a very good Live Recoding!
Good album if you like live music and John Mayer.......2007-07-19
I love live music and I love John Mayer. That is what made this album a good buy for me. If you are looking for Johns classics then this album might not be for you because it features stuff from a trio of his. It does have a great Somethings Missing and some songs that are Newer in this album from the newest album.
All and all if you are looking for some different John Mayer stuff and you already like him this would be a great addition to your collection.
This album has a blusey feel to it much like his latest album has.
Better than expected.......2007-05-30
John Mayer does have a lot of live albums for a guy who just put out his Jr. cd this past fall. But, hey...if you have the chops, and the raw muscial talent than people will listen, even if it's the same tracks. Mostly because he's the king of creative variation. This CD is better than I expected, and more edgy than some of his past albums.
There are old favorites here, but again- he never sings the same song twice, and has a lot of fun with his music! His music is so dam good people buy cd's with the same tracks just to hear them a different way!
Live Album.......2007-05-26
This isn't the first John Mayer cd Ive bought but I think it's the best. Hearing him live is a whole new experience.

There's a reason Barbra Streisand's 2006 tour broke the arena house record in every city it visited, and it's because she's not only a legend but (still) a performer who effortlessly twists intimacy and friendliness and fierceness into a perfect, sturdy braid. This two-disc set, which pulls performances from dates in New York, Washington, D.C., and Fort Lauderdale, will raise its share of goosebumps. For longtime fans, they'll be a reaction to songs Streisand hasn't touched since the '70s and earlier, including "(Have I Stayed) Too Long At the Fair?" and "Unusual Way," from the Broadway musical Nine. For relative newbies, they'll be a response to her between-song patter, which touches with grace, wit, and sincerity on everything from her love for her son to her political leanings to her limitations as songwriter. The voice, of course, enthralls--there it is glowing on "Carefully Taught," one of four songs that have never before appeared on a Streisand recording, and there it is again wrapping luxurious tones all around "Evergreen," one of three songs she shares with Il Divo. Streisand--diva, political dynamo, superstar--still knows how to orchestrate a showstopper. --Tammy La Gorce

Another concert album.......2007-07-18
I love Barbra and her music. I went to see her concert last year, so I bought this CD set to remind of that moment. While all her albums are a joy to listen to, I found this one to be more of the same. Some of her concert albums from the 1990s are better and more powerful. Her voice is not quite as strong, she does not hold those notes quite as long. Didn't care much for her backup band, Il Divo. Nevertheless, the album is a delight.
Wrong To Be Profane.......2007-07-14
Despite habitually retractable tentative hints of private integrity and partly with a guise of ignorance regarding sacred sexualities in marital contexts, Ms. Streisand has, apparently yearning for ethical integrities of others and herself, completed another celebration of my and her own conceptions. I have neither attended any of her concerts nor, as of yet, watched any record of these from 2006, though I both watched her portral in New York City at the Winter Garden Theater of Ms. Fanny Brice and found most of this 2-CD set comparable to that 2-stars (rated) portrayal; some of the rest is so astonishingly beautiful, particularly the first 4 tracks of CD 2 involving the birthdays of Jason G. and his mother, it makes this set worthy of placement beside some of the music composed by Gustav Mahler, who referred to the deaths of some children musically.
STREISAND STILL THE BEST!.......2007-07-13
Barbara Streisand and Il Divo what more could you ask for! Her best album in years and with Il Divo on numbers like There's A Place For Us it gives you chills. Buy this and you will enjoy it full volume year after year!
Not the Best of Barbra.......2007-07-07
Streisand's lastest CD, *Guilty Pleasures* was a feast of songs she had never sung before, and a reunion with Barry Gibb, who writes for Barbra in a more contemporary way than the Bergmans or Marvin Hamlisch. It is a great CD, and her voice is sublime, aided, of course, by sound technicians. All artists owe their sound engineers their careers though. She and Barry have fun on it--it's fresh and alive. Not so much with the 2006 Concert CD, a recording of the concert tour, replete with IL Divo, a mostly unnecessary addition. They are wooden men with BIG, BORING voices.
From the beginning, Babs sounds tired, hoarse and raspy. I saw her in concert, where she sometimes sounded even worse than this recording. The engineers cleaned it up as well as they could, leaving more than a hint of breathiness and weariness. Fortunately, only about half of the songs are weakly rendered; the other half really are terrific experiences. I have no idea what is going on with her voice that from song to song there could be such differences, but if I were Streisand I would leave the belting behind. It wouldn't hurt for her to warm up before she comes onstage, not as she is giving the concert. For any price, a fan would expect the performer to be well prepared. When she sings a soft ballad, she often soars, and her magic is prominent. It's painful to watch her crumble under the memory of her once youthful voice (and it was only a few years ago that she sounded like a 25 year old songstress). Streisand knows how to play a song for all its worth, but she sometimes tramples it to death. *Don't Rain in My Parade* is just not what it used to be. She hits high notes, but without the characteristic force. And she can hold the notes, or seem to, when she takes little breaks before each song's finale. Her phrasing is impeccable when she is giving it all she has to give, but too often she seems bored. This is not a bad CD, just not as inspired as *The Concert.*
It also has to be said that it seems apparent Streisand is not taking care of her God-given voice, one she herself has said that she takes for granted (unimaginable!!).
The chatter inbetween songs is dull and preachy, and it was exactly the same in every city, except for blabbering about the fattening food she ate all across the US (excluded from the CD, thank the Lord). The fans are really the stars on this CD--they roar constantly, as if they had been starving to see Streisand all their lives. It's an odd treat. The orchestra is incredible, but live, it drowns her out at times (as does IL Divo). This recording does not relfect that though.
If you do not own *The Concert* CD, buy it and skip this one. This CD is for avid, adoration-is-blind Streisand fans only and those keeping track of Streisand's vocal history..
Streisand: Live in Concert (2 CD's).......2007-06-27
Whenever I hear Barbra sing it feels as if I were listening to an angel....The depth of her voice, the feeling she caries in every song she sings makes you fall in love, feel despair, feel hapinness or sadness....She is capable of making you feel the letter of her songs....A true Diva....My only regret is that I will never be able to see her live.....I hope they make a DVD of this concert so I can see her perform live at least on the TV set...

Album Description
This once in a lifetime event gathered musicians from wildly different backgrounds in a benefit for Richard Gere's Healing The Divide Foundation. Recorded live at Lincoln Center in NY, this CD features transcendental performances from Tibet's Gyuto Choir, India's Anoushka Shankar, genre-bending duets from Tibetan avant-garde musician Nawang Kechong with Native American master R. Carlos Nakai, and maverick composer Philip Glass with Gambian virtuoso Foday Musa Suso. The concert closer is a unique collaboration between musicians who personify the spirit of adventure in contemporary music, as Tom Waits performs four of his classic songs accompanied by Grammy winners the Kronos Quartet. Add a moving opening address by the Dalai Lama and you have the perfect musical embodiment of the Foundation's mission: to bridge cultural gaps and forge revolutionary new bonds between people around the world. Proceeds from sales will be directly applied to projects benefiting the peoples of Tibet and the Himalayan region.

Josh Groban in Concert has all the ingredients to be a long-running PBS staple: a young (21), good-looking performer with a golden voice; songs in Italian and Spanish for the crossover crowd (i.e., Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman) and pop and movie songs for the mainstream; guest stars galore (David Foster, John Williams, Angie Stone, Andrea Corr, Lili Haydn); a large orchestra; and striking but not obtrusive visual effects. The centerpiece of this DVD-CD combo (also available in a DVD keepcase) is the 80-minute concert DVD, filmed in Pasadena in October 2002 and featuring numerous songs from Groban's debut CD, including "You're Still You," which catapulted him into stardom when he sang it on TV's Ally McBeal. There are also two new songs--the ballad "Broken Vow," with Groban accompanied by Foster, and "For Always," with the orchestra conducted by John Williams, who wrote the song for the Steven Spielberg film A.I..
The 37-minute CD offers seven songs performed in the concert (including the two not on the previous CD, "Broken Vow" and "For Always"), plus "O Holy Night." The DVD has excellent picture and sound (PCM stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1, and DTS), interviews, and backstage footage, and the combination with the CD is an excellent value. Groban's fans, of course, will consider it a treasure at any price. --David Horiuchi

In case you couldn't go to the concert. . ........2007-05-12
In case you couldn't go to the concert . . . buy this CD/DVD set. This is a good overall product. The DVD is seamlessly pieced together from three concerts. The concerts were awesome due to the lights, musicians, song introductions, and of course - Josh's voice, presence, and energy.
Young Josh .......2007-04-12
This cd and dvd collection is valuable to anyone collecting Josh Groban music. The dvd is nicely done and gives a little insight into his family (parents and younger brother) with the special features. Nice, clean, family entertainment which is such a rarity nowadays. This young man's voice is exceptional - God has truly blessed him with such a voice, and to see him perform is a gift as well. My family truly enjoyed this bonus.
The Best I've Ever Heard Live!!.......2007-04-10
He has the most beautiful voice!! I love seeing him live! Worth the money to hear him over and over again!!!
Josh Grobin DVD/CD.......2007-04-02
I ordered this concert DVD/CD for my Mom who is a new fan of Josh Grobin's and she loved both the concert footage and the songs on the DVD.
Fantastic concert....Josh Grobin is outstanding!.......2007-02-22
I have been a Josh Grobin fan since I heard "You Lift Me Up", and I have not been dissapointed with his CD's ever since. I was excited when I got this DVD and it definitely did not dissapoint. He chooses his songs wisely and each song in this concert is full of emotion and depth. The CD compliments the DVD well and is always a favorite. From "Broken Vow" to "Oh Holy Night" each song is sung by this master singer.
Highly Recommended!

Stellar Performance.......2007-06-27
Having been a professional violinist and pianist for thirty years, I have developed a special appreciation for classical music. Scheherezade is one of the great orchestral pieces. This version clearly highlights the great skill of the composer and the orchestra. All the pieces on this cd are performed at a high skill level and the recording quality is excellent. It is on a par with the great performances by other orchestras, and I highly recommend it.
Nostalgia.......2007-06-27
My father was a classical musician in the days when every major theater had a pit orchestra of concert-level musicians. Boris Morros, a Russian born impresario paid tribute to them, saying: "the impact of these luxurious film theaters on the culture of America has never been properly emphasized. In one of our marble movie temples every tired scrub-lady could feel like a queen--for fifty cents--and every bootblack like a king as they lounged back in more comfortable chairs than monarchs ever enjoyed. I was impressed by the ever-growing popularity of the so-called good music the large symphony orchestras in these theaters played at each performance. From the day they opened they had thrilled audiences of ordinary people (who were supposed to have appreciation only for ragtime and sentimental ballads) with first-rate renditions...." Anyway, when those theaters and orchestras went, the substitute was a cult of mediocrity, so I was just indulging myself listening to all the horn work in Korsakov and remembering all those 'good ol days.'
Best Classical CD bargain on Amazon, IMHO.......2007-03-29
I'm surprised this CD isn't displayed on the Classical Blowout store. Perhaps it's *too* good a bargain? I purchased this CD for one piece: The Story Of The Kalandar Prince. My children and I love this work, as it is orchestrated like a story ("tone poem" is the correct term I think) - insert your imagination as to how it plays out.
This a wonderful CD to play on a cold winter night, with a roaring fire and a glass of wine. If you want a fine introduction to the 'oomph' of Easter European composers, you can do no wrong with this CD. I also recommend the Edwin Elgar Pomp & Circumstance CD from this bargain Seraphim collection.
Cheap? Only in price.......2007-02-22
First - how can one go wrong buying this cd at this price? The answer is - one cannot go wrong buying this cd at this price. Not even at three times this price. It's a lush recording and is every bit as good as anything recorded yesterday in a state of the art studio. At least some people have never heard of Rimsky-Korsakov. This is a cheap way to be introduced nicely. Others have these pieces by three or four different orchestras. Add this one - you'll be glad you did if for no other reason than when it arrives you'll listen once again to music you've put away for some time.

It's impossible to hear Andrea Bocelli singing Perry Como's "It's Impossible" without being overcome by a sense of utter enchantment. As the ripe-hearted have known since 1997's Romanza, though, Bocelli's French-perfume-like appeal generally lingers well beyond a single song, suffusing entire lovestruck evenings with its richness and warmth. And so it goes with Under the Desert Sky. Recorded at a floating concert venue near Las Vegas (thus the title), Bocelli's first CD/DVD combo plays like an elaborate seduction. Cue up the DVD, and the crossover classical tenor, outfitted in black velvet, tortures the besotted with visible sincerity and knockout performances alongside David Foster and the elegant Heather Headley. Spin the CD and the songs come spilling out like elegant reminders of the swoon-worthy live performance. Several of the nine songs on the CD--"Cuando Me Enamoro," "Canzoni Stonate," and "Somos Novios (It's Impossible)" among them--are available on other Bocelli discs, but that shouldn't deter the faithful. For one thing, "Can't Help Falling in Love," a dazzling duet with American Idol's Katherine McPhee, can't be heard elsewhere. For another, outside of a few vintage Julio Iglesias albums, you just won't find this much feeling packed into a single 33-minute disc. It's impossible. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description
UNDER THE DESERT SKY: a spectacular new CD/DVD combo package from Andrea Bocelli, featuring his first ever live pop concert performance. Performed on a specially constructed floating stage in Lake Las Vegas, a resort community 20 miles south of Las Vegas, this historic performance captures Andrea Bocelli's first ever pop concert. Under the Desert Sky, which co-stars Tony® winner Heather Headley (Elton John's Aida), represents a new era for the Tuscan-born singer. Spanish guitars flourish, traditional Latin percussion seductively keeps the tempo, accordions and harmonicas provide haunting ambience. Highlights include "Somos Novios" - Perry Como had a hit with it as "It's Impossible" - and "The Prayer," a duet with Heather Headley, David Foster and Carole Bayer Sager's Oscar® nominated song from Quest for Camelot. Capping the program is a new song, "Because We Believe," by David Foster with lyrics by Andrea Bocelli and Amy Foster Gillies which was written for and introduced at the 2006 Torino Winter Olympics.

Andrea Bocelli Under the Desert Sky.......2007-07-14
I love this DVD. I think it is one of Bocelli's best. He sings the old and new standards so beautifully. I've been giving this DVD to everyone I know who loves good music. It is one of the most romantic DVD's you'll ever listen to and view.
Damaged CD Received - Andrea Bocelli (1 of 2 discs).......2007-07-02
PLEASE NOTE: One of the CD's in this 2-CD package is a "bad disc" and came to me in this condition - I tried to load it and it shows up as a "bad disc" in my CD Players and spits it out - I need to know how to return it for replacement. I am very disappointed, as I was looking forward to playing Andrea Bocelli's CD's in my new Car !
My Favorite Singer.......2007-06-08
This is a wonderful album of pop music. Andrea Bocelli can sing anything! He has an incredible voice!
The best.......2007-05-16
I really love this CD. I have many of his other recordings but now that he is loosening up and even singing in English once in a while, I appreciate him even more. His voice has mellowed as well. This is really one of his very best.
Tears to your eyes .......2007-05-12
A truly wonderfull cd packed with emotive music. Just buy it and loose yourself into Andrea Bocelli's world. Music to listen to anytime. A very gifted singer.

Solve the enigma.......2007-08-01
I ordered the recording and the score to see if I could break the code. Besides identifying each variation with one of Elgar's friends, is there something in the main motif itself? Like the digits of pi? Has anyone found the pattern?
Great recording, great price. Buy this without question!!!!!.......2007-07-08
I stumbled across this little gem for the low price of about $3.00. I almost kept going assuming that the price was an indication of the quality. Glad I looked twice.
This is a wonderful album with respectful treatments and excellent sound quality, performed by the some of the greatest musicians in the world from the London Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philharmonica Orchestra.
The Enigma Variations, a Theme and 15 short orchestrations that Sir Edward then named after his friends and family based on personality traits, are a wonderful, uncelebrated Opus. I love these pieces. They truly showcase the power of Elgar's compositional style and flair. They certainly rival his more famous Pomp and Circumstance, in my humble opinion. The recording is sharp, well mixed, with no perceivable noise.
As for the Pomp and Circumstance recordings, well done throughout. All 5 pieces are played wonderfully and recorded beautifully with excellent sound mixing and very little, if any, background noise.
Cockaigne Overture is, once again, perfect. Marvelous treatment, wonderful musicianship, excellent sound and quality.
THIS HAS GOT TO BE THE GREATEST MUSICAL VALUE ON THE SHELVES RIGHT NOW. I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE I ONLY PAID $3.00 FOR THIS RECORDING. I WOULD HAVE GLADLY SHELLED OUT THE OBLIGATORY $15.00 - $20.00 CONSIDERING THE QUALITY OF THIS CD.
IF YOU ARE READING THIS, YOU MUST BUY RIGHT NOW, BEFORE THEY COME TO THEIR SENSES AND RAISE THE PRICE!
CLASSICAL MASTERS.......2007-05-12
I BOUGHT THE CD FOR POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE BUT QUICKLY FELL IN LOVE WITH THE ENTIRE PIECE. IT IS WONDERFUL!
Noble Elgar, unbelievable price.......2007-05-05
This is not some schlock budget disc, which the price might suggest. Boult was one of the great Elgar interpretors (Barbirolli too) and these performances, especially the inspired Enigma Variations, bring out the very soul of Elgar. Sound quality, by the way, is excellent--warm and rich analog glow.
Great for High School Graduations!.......2007-03-12
I am the Principal of a small private boarding school that opened just last year. We do not have a school orchestra, so when the time came for us to plan our graduation ceremony, I searched all over the web for the traditional music. I heard some awful, piano versions of Pomp and Circumstance #4, and some other lackluster symphonic versions. Seraphim's CD of Elgar's works is by far the best. It is warm, heartfelt, inspiring, rich and incredibly well produced. Perhaps having the London Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra was the best choice, as they are playing the works of a fellow countryman. Several people came up to me after the ceremony to comment on the music, saying they were extremely moved by the music. Not bad for just playing it over a boombox!
By the way, if you are planning on using this for a graduation, know that you will have to edit out the long introductory passage and figure out how to loop the most famous "graduation" section over enough times to get through your ceremony!

Happy is the composer who has an advocate as passionate and talented as Leonard Bernstein. These Copland performances have been the preferred versions since they were first issued--better even than the composer's own, later recordings. Originally they were spread over two discs, but thanks to the extended playing time of the compact disc, you can now get all three great Copland ballets together, along with the ever popular Fanfare for the Common Man. Bernstein brings to this music the right sharpness of rhythm but also a typically open-hearted warmth. He coaxes a virtuoso response from the New York Philharmonic, which knows this music as well (or better) than anyone. Self- recommending. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
What more could one ask for?.......2007-06-27
Aaron Copland's masterful works are here interpreted by Bernstein. Nothing says the American sound like Copland, and there is no better interpreter than Bernstein. This recording is one of the best in my collection. I would recommend this to anyone (even non-classical music fans).
Definitive Is Right.......2007-02-27
I have the SACD version of these recordings (except for the "Fanfare" which, in this case, is the version taken from Bernstein's recording of Copland's Third Symphony) and I must agree with others here that the performances are definitive. The "Rodeo" has more energy than any other recording I know of, in fact it can almost go over the top! "Billy the Kid" is quiet and tender, dramatic and bold and "Appalachian Spring" is dead-on. The last section of this ballet is one of my very favorite pieces of music and Bernstein's tempo and phrasing here could well be called perfect.
Definitive Recordings of Copland's Popular Ballet Scores From Bernstein, NYPO.......2007-02-11
Without question, this splendid CD is my favorite recording of some of Aaron Copland's most popular orchestral ballet scores. In Leonard Bernstein he had both a good friend and a devout ally, who successfully championed Copland's music, helping to ensure his reputation as one of the greatest - if not the greatest - 20th Century American composer. Sony has done a superb job in digitally remastering this recording, offering some of the best sound I've heard from a vintage Leonard Bernstein/New York Philharmonic recording. But more importantly than the recording's superb sonic quality is the quality of these performances of Copland's scores. Bernstein leads in New York Philharmonic in these virtuoso performances, replete with lush, vibrant playing from the winds, horns and strings. His warm, truly heart-felt interpretation of "Applachian Spring" is truly mesmerizing, and the best I have heard from a recording. And yet, I am am just as impressed with his conducting of both "Rodeo" and "Billy the Kid"; the latter replete with superb solos from the orchestra's timpanist. An elegant performance of "Fanfare for the Common Man" closes out this CD recording. Fans of Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra shouldn't hesitate in acquiring this superb CD.
American Music at its Highest .......2007-02-04
If I was forced to recommend one CD of American music, I would feel very safe in backing this one. These interpretations have yet to be surpassed, and not even Copland himself could muster the same type of perfection that Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic did in this recording. Bernstein's way with Rodeo is unbelievable, and this alone is worth the price of the disc. The music on this recording has a lot to do with why, as Americans, we can all be proud of our place in the history of western music.
With 39 reviews under me, I will dispense with the adjectives to try and describe each interpretation of each piece on this disc, and simply say that these performances have been recommended by almost everyone (professional critics included of course) since they appeared; get it and find out why.
The best of Copland.......2007-01-09
For the Aaron Copland fan, this CD has the essentials: the most popular and easy listening of the Copland body of creations. Enjoy!

A musical chameleon, pianist Keith Jarrett was at his finest when he recorded these sustained solo improvisations in a German concert hall in 1975, the first lasting 26 minutes, the second 40. Melodies and rhythmic figures arise fluidly from his fingers as he moves from one idea to another, while his strong left hand is often used for repeated motifs that generate a rolling hypnotic power. This couples with strongly consonant harmonies to impart the flavor of gospel music at times, dance musics and Debussy at others. Above all, it's Jarrett's ability to knit all of his moods and wanderings into an almost seamless tapestry of warm and tuneful ideas that gives this music its enduring appeal. --Stuart Broomer
Customer Reviews:
this is really cheesy music..........2007-06-23
...and it's as pure piano playing it's absolutely awful. Nothing but ENDLESSLY repeated riffs overlaid with harmonically elementary noodling. No harmonic tension, no structure, no imagination, no technique. It might make decent background music at an all you can eat buffet, however. Pure kitsch from beginning to end.
One of my favorites EVER!.......2007-04-23
I first heard this in the late 70s and thought it was nice, but a bit boring. Then I heard it again and liked it more. Gradually I have fallen completely in love with it. I am captivated by the way the different tracks build and grow and fall back again, but mostly it's the emotional energy you feel from Jarret himself. I also have "La Scala" and some other things he has done, but nothing quite matches this for me. I don't know how many times I have given it to people or recommended it.
Good music!.......2007-03-19
I like the consert and its variations of sound. It is rare to hear musicans reaction to his work.
Ageless Sounds.......2007-02-18
The Koln Concert's improvisations highlight Jarrett's skills and passion. Truly ageless music that continues to provide pleasure to the lovers of jazz piano.
All surface.......2007-01-15
The playing on this album is pretentiousness masquerading as profundity. Jarrett can set a nice groove, but then he simply falls in love with it, and self-indulgently persists to a point where I want to scream "Get off of it!" He tosses in some pretty decorations along ther way, and a few shouts and grunts now and then to show us how moved he is by this music, but it all adds up to an immensely forgettable experience.

You can almost hear Simon & Garfunkel begin to like each other again on this now-legendary set. On September 19, 1981, the duo reunited for just the second time since their initial breakup and revealed a camaraderie that had apparently vanished years earlier. Not only do they reprise their shared hits, they also work in a few of Paul Simon's solo gems and a couple of telling covers--one from the Everly Brothers and one from Chuck Berry. The band includes the best session men around. By the time they get to the sincerity of "Old Friends" and the joy of "The 59th Street Bridge Song," you sense a relationship fully repaired. After this success, they even planned a studio record together--one that eventually became Simon's overlooked Hearts and Bones--few were surprised when it did not come to pass. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
Wish they'd have another go at it!.......2007-08-02
I was far too young to have gone to the concert itself, but I'm glad I got to hear the recording. Along with the usual S&G tunes, they also did some of their solo stuff (Paul Simon's "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard" with Garfunkel on Harmony, and Art Garfunkel's "A Heart in New York") and a remake (Wake Up Little Susie). It's a shame they haven't gotten back together in years, but such is the fate of groups that split up. I highly recommend this recording. The sound quality's great and you'll love the tunes.
a great live album............2007-06-08
THE CONCERT IN CENTRAL PARK (recorded in 1981) is probably one of the best live albums I have heard. I originally saw Simon & Garfunkel's reunion concert in Central Park on television. It was a popular "pledge drive" show on PBS, with good reason. This performance was a reconciiliation for Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, who had a fracas some years before (I think they call it "artistic differences" in polite conversation), and broke up their duo. You can feel a really renewed sense of camraderie from these two men. During the time that they broke up, leading up to their Central Park reunion, Paul Simon had recorded some moderately successful hits as a soloist, and interjects some of his tunes ("Kodochrome," as an example) with S&G's greatest hits.
Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel sound great here, and sound like they are having a wonderful time playing to an audience that loves them. They open with "Mrs. Robinson," their hit from the soundtrack to THE GRADUATE...."coo coo cujoo," to paraphrase the lyrics. What a brilliant tune and no one sings it with more gusto than the men who made it famous! "Scarborough Fair," "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and many other numbers weave Simon's steadfast melody with Garfunkel's clear harmony. There are times that the two sound like they could have been minstrels, carrying messages of love, longing and rejection to the court of Camelot, and then you hear the rock riff and that vision is scratched! I think the word I am looking for is "timeless." This album delivers on every level and you will really feel like you were there for an historic reunion between two great vocalists. It's just a shame that the reunion feeling didn't last.
Great Live Album...brings you back........2007-03-26
Great music. Great sound. This is definitely an upbeat, happy live album. If you are a fan, this is a must-have. I am not a big fan, and I love it.
Goosebumps!.......2007-03-09
If you like Simon, Garfunkel, or Simon and Garfunkel at all, this CD should be the very first in your collection. Sheer beauty. Not studio quality, (it IS, after all, a live concert) but with such atmosphere, you really don't miss that.
Not my cup of tea.......2007-01-16
One good song, of course "The sound of silence", and the studio version is far better than this one. I am not a fan of the genre as you might expect.
