About the Artist
Anne Heaton Bio: The New Haven Advocate voted Heaton "Best Singer-Songwriter" of 2000 and The Boston Globe calls her "easily [one] of the area's most notable female singer-songwriters." Chris Smith, former editor for Performing Songwriter Magazine, writes "Heaton is one of the finest writers and performers I've come across in years - she is one of the standards by which I measure talent in the New York music community. That she is not on a major label is nothing short of criminal."

Heaton has performed as a solo artist, as a duo with guitarist Frank Marotta, Jr., and with her band at colleges, clubs, and festivals around the country such as Hamilton College, Yale University, Fez, Makor, Toad's Place, Schuba's Tavern, The Somerville Theatre, The Double Door, The Point, Club Passim, International Festival of Arts and Ideas, Ectofest, Northampton Music Festival, and The Rockrgrl Conference. Heaton has shared the stage with Jonatha Brooke, Ellis Paul, Melissa Ferrick, Dan Bern, Max Roach, Cliff Eberhardt, Beth Amsel and Sloan Wainwright.

During the summer of 1999, Heaton finished in the top 20 out of 800 entries in the Lilith Fair online competition. The following year, Heaton was invited to attend ASCAP's Advanced Songwriters' Workshop in New York City. In 2001, Heaton, as one of several up-and-coming performing New York area songwriters in the "Live from New York" show (which includes Sam Shaber, Edie Carey, Teddy Goldstein & Andrew Kerr), Heaton helped break attendance records at The Living Room, Club Passim and The Point. The "Live From New York" Group has more recently performed at The Somerville Theater, Noe Valley Ministry (San Francisco), and FEZ.

Heaton's music is subtly spun narratives set to catchy, often syncopated, melodies. According to Songwriters' Monthly (5/99), "Heaton's love for her craft and for her audience is apparent in every stage gesture, every funny aside, and every stanza of every song." "I've never seen an artist entrance a room of listeners the way Heaton does - she magically brings the listener to another level" (Brooke Primont, BMI). Heaton's charming stage presence has matured not only from the experience of performing her own songs but also from the experience of singing traditional spirituals and original jazz compositions on tour with legendary jazz drummer/composer Max Roach, performing to audiences of over 3,000 in London and Paris. Anne came to be a singer for Max Roach's tour by singing in a Gospel Choir in Harlem where all choir members were encouraged to learn early American song forms as well as classical pieces.

Tom Neff of Grassy Hill Concerts says "Heaton's bluesy piano folk has a unique slack-voweled, angular-melodied sound, while the lyrics explore a kind of blue-collar rapture I find very affecting." Terry McNamara of The Chicago Folk Alliance says "When Anne sings, she reminds me of a female Ray Charles."

Heaton's new songs are catchy soaring melodies with great emotional pull and smart lyrics. Her upcoming release Black Notebook, co-produced by David Seitz (Suzanne Vega, Susan McKeown), is backed by lush full-band textures (and often set to hypnotic hip-hop-like loops) and hosts an amazing line-up of musicians including drummer Shawn Pelton (The Saturday Night Live Band) and Michael Visceglia (Suzanne Vega).

"Anne Heaton has made a masterpiece. Plain and simple. In the hands of the right people, "Old Man by Twenty-One" could be a #1 hit. So amazing. Already I'm sure it's going to be my favorite album of the year." - Matt Smith, Club Passim

"It's simply brilliant, we all love it!" - Jen Perry, Melissa Ferrick's road manager

"Just when I get to thinking we've bottomed out on refreshingly original singer-songwriters with an edge, along comes Anne Heaton to prove me wrong" - Scott Cullen, Concerts at the Crossing (featuring artists such as Laura Love and Erin McKeown)

"About a year and a half ago, I was introduced to Anne Heaton and was very impressed with her songwriting. Over the next year, we recorded an album - one that transcends the usual singer/songwriter production values but still maintains the intimacy and the essential character of Anne's sophisticated melodic writing. The first cut on her CD, "Take Your Desire", is about as good a AAA "hit" as I've heard in many years." - David Seitz, Prime CD & Producer (Richard Shindell, Suzanne Vega, Susan McKeown)

5 out of 5 stars Funky, Fun and Fabulous.......2006-05-19

Anne is equally amazing in concert and on produced media. Her voice is as haunting as it is angelic. Each album is a touch better than the one before and I will continue to buy each and every one of them! I just got an iPod and in a collection of hundreds of CDs, hers were the FIRST ones I downloaded!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and unusual........2005-06-21

I first came across Anne Heaton on garageband.com. Out of several songs from unsigned bands I reviewed there Anne's was one of only a bout a dozen that really stood out. I downloaded her MP3s, Black Notebook and Spinning and kept them on my playlist for a year or 2 before hearing that she'd been signed, at which point I went on to iTunes, found her (surprisingly) featured there and downloaded her album.

I was not disappointed.

Anne's piano playing background and influences in both rock, jazz and latin music, give her an ability to write songs and phrase her vocals in ways that sound simple but leave multiple layers to be unwrapped so they can be enjoyed over and over again. She knows how to start a song to capture your attention, how to end a song so that you know it's over and how to arrange a song so that it speaks to you.

She has an unusual voice, a sort of combined New York and Chicago accent, which might grate on some people's nerves. It's certainly very distinctive. There's plusses and minuses to that. She also has a very unusual and very rhythmic vocal style which seems to insert extra syllables into words the way the Red Hot Chilli Peppers used to.

The stylistixc odditties may be hooks to draw you in or they may become grating. The jury's still out on that, but so far after years of listening to it I still love this album and will be buying her second.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal.......2004-02-17

Anne Heaton combines supberb musicanship with thoughtful and compelling lyrics to make one of the more interesting singer/songwriter albums in recent years.

She tours regularly and her new songs are even stronger -- commercially and artistically -- than those on "Black Notebook". This is an artist to watch.

5 out of 5 stars I, for one, like it. A lot........2004-01-20

I don't understand why there aren't any reviews of this album yet, so I figure I'll write one.

I first came across this album in a music store, on one of those listening station thingys. Now, I like being exposed to new music, but for some reason the music at most listening stations doesn't usually make a big impression on me.

This album was different, though--firstly, her voice struck me as very unique. I don't really know how describe musical things in words very well, but it was deep and soothing; I loved the intonation of her words, the rhythm of her sentences.

The music itself I liked, too. I don't know anything about music theory, but it just felt very simple and elegant--not overcomplicated, not boring. It would move from these gentle mellow themes and arc into these soaring melodies that just sounded utterly beautiful. There are very few parts of this album that sound "boring" to me--although there are some, admittedly. Even still. I bought this album about 3 months ago, it's still one of my favorites, and I hope it stays that way.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Intimate Landscapes.......2004-11-22

David Kitt does a funny thing on this album of Covers. He actually writes an original song for it ( 'Up All Night' ). It's not like he had to of course. Live, he's spectacularly re-interpreted Princes ' When Doves Cry ' amongst others that he chose not to include on this release ( See B-Side of ' me and my love ' ). The reason he wrote and included ' Up all Night ' is simply to highlight, that amongst all these classics by REM, The Beatles et all, he can box his weight with his own compositions. Not only does he achieve this, he's also successfully come up with the best song on the Album. Written during a 'strange' period in Irish Culture ( All out smoking-in-workplace ban ) it effortlessly captures the weary scene of doing an all-nighter. The beats ( However chilled ) don't let up and before long you're imagining the scene, feeling the weariness. From here on in you needn't worry, Kittser somehow takes songs from both poles and stamps his name all over them. Some you'll know and others you won't, but that isn't gonna matter. Form Sonic Youth' Teenage Riot ' Kitt simply removes the urgency but none of the passion. Trademark loops and breathy vocals, the song is a complete reconstruction more that than a re-imaginig. The word on the street already that this is better than the original. Along with ' Up all Night ' his extraordinary take on Phil Lynotts ' Dancing in the Moonlight ' and electrocution of REM's ' Don't go back to Rockville ' vie for standouts. The former plays a special attention to Lynotts teenage words and it's delicate rendering is unrecognisable compared to the Lizzy original, whilst the latter rattles is all like an electro steam train and again, the sentiment of the song, previously secondary to the music, is allowed out to play over fields of buzzes and loops. In fact, it sounds very like the wild experimentation that the authors tried with their ' Up' album. With it's nods to influence, indie-chic and fun this is a truly essential Irish release which will, if you haven't already, serve as a perfect introduction..

5 out of 5 stars Music that Shines..........2003-07-01

This collection of songs is amazing. Anne Heaton is a true talent and her music touches a place deep in the soul. Her lyrics are original, honest, and complex. The music itself is simultaneously uplifting and intimate. If you have an opportunity to see her live, do it. She has an onstage presence that is warm and engaging, and a spirit that radiates beauty. Get this album, you won't be disappointed.

      5 out of 5 stars Astonishing........2003-06-26

Anne Heaton is one of the best new(ish) singer/songwriters to hit the scene in years. Her music is soulful and catchy, her lyrics are heartfelt and anything but stereotypical, and her performances are always engaging. The addition of a band to her normal solo/duet performance style could have been disasterous; it's been the downfall of many a soloist in the past. But the band supports Anne without drowning her, and the stereo album sounds far better than even I had hoped for. Black Notebook is one of my favorite albums, and I have well over a thousand. I'm anxiously waiting to see what she gives her listeners next, but until then I'll be quite happy to listen to this record a few hundred more times, especially the title track and "Old Man By Twenty-One."

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful - An up and coming Star!.......2003-03-21

Anne Heaton's music is wonderful. Her piano fills the air with its rich sweetness and her rapid-fire lyrics are amazing. This CD is filled from beggining to end with beautiful songs.
