Album Description

Enter a Sacred Dream - This soothing-trance music invites you to remember your own inner peace. Award-winning artists David and Steve Gordon (Sacred Earth Drums, Drum Medicine) combine the Tribal drums and reverent Native Flute melodies they are renowned for with relaxing atmospheres, ancient Shaman chants (Lakota, Tibetan, Aboriginal and Mayan) guitars, sounds of nature and the healing resonance of Crystal Bowls. The album consists of four serenely hypnotic 20-minute movements that correspond to the Native-American four directions and the four sections or worlds that make up a Shamanic Journey.  This peaceful soundscape will nourish your Massage, Meditation and Yoga as well as being the perfect music for starting your day or unwinding at night.

Billboard-charting artists David & Steve Gordon (Sacred Earth Drums, Drum Medicine) have sold over 1.3 million albums. This is the Gordons' first full-length collaboration since Drum Medicine, which won Visionary Record of the Year and Best World Album.

"Primal rhythms and Native Flutes once again intertwine in the percussive panoramas of David and Steve Gordon. Past releases from the Gordons, like SACRED EARTH DRUMS and DRUM MEDICINE, have proven their mastery of shamanic sounds in a healing setting and became top sellers in the genre. SHAMAN'S VISION JOURNEY takes things one step further with the introduction of some fascinating instrumentation choices. Crystal bowls, uncommon for a World percussive album, are used with great effect in the music, adding a mystical glow to it. Subtle ancient chants (Tibetan, Sanskrit, Aboriginal, Mayan & Lakota) and Indian drone instruments provide additional Eastern influence in the music, and make an intuitive counterpoint to the haunting Native American flute. The most striking thing about the album is the rhythms, which are rich, earthy and invigorating. " ~ Music Design In Review

I love to close my eyes and soar
this is beautiful music and it
leaves you feeling renewed and

5 out of 5 stars Shaman's Vision Journey - Meditative!.......2007-02-04

I'm a massage therapist and used this CD for 2 weeks without tiring of it.(I didn't play any other) I also use it for meditation, it's perfect. I really love this CD. I have 3 other discs of the Gordon brothers and this is by far my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars A Sacred Mood Unfolds.......2006-05-16

I have the Gordons other native/world albums like Sacred Earth Drums, Drum Medicine and Drum Prayer. This one is just as gorgeous as those but it has longer songs which creates more of a peaceful trance soundscape. I use it for yoga and relaxing at the end of the day. The Gordons are absolutely the finest world fusion artists. Highest Recommendation!

5 out of 5 stars The Gordon's Go Deep into Shamanic Trance.......2006-05-13

As a long time healer and practitioner of cross-cultural shamanism I must say that I am once again incredibly impressed with this latest release from David & Steve Gordon. This is their first all new release in over 6 years, since their profoundly inspirational "Drum Medicine" was released in 1999. And this title clearly shows the Gordon's have been hard at work, delving deeply into the fertile realms of the subconscious in order to unearth the Great Spirit that lies within. They have created a uniquely indelible synthesis of the Shamanic experience through the four worlds of the Native American cultures; within these four distinct tracks that penetrate into an entrancing exploration of these inner realms. Yet this is no mere Native American release; this is pure musical alchemy - deftly blending music and voices of indigenous shamanic cultures from around the globe. The Brothers skillfully bring together tribal drums, native flutes, crystal bowls and other instruments and rhythms from around the world with anceint Lakota, Aboriginal, Buddhist, Mayan and Sanskrit chants. The result is a soothing, trance inducing mix in four 18 minute movements that have to be heard and experienced to be fully appreciated. This title is great for meditation, healing and inner visioning work. Put your headphones on and slip blissfully into other worlds.

Amazon.com

This is by far the best and most comprehensive introduction to recorded blues ever assembled, drawing styles, record labels, and eras together with the efficiency of a spider's web. These five discs--tied to the hit-and-miss PBS film series Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues--embrace field hollers, early queens Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith, the music's first composer W.C. Handy, Delta slide guitarists, string bands, piano barrelhousers, jazz geniuses Count Basie and Lionel Hampton, Texas hotshots, lyric poets Percy Mayfield and Willie Dixon, Chicago powerhouses from Muddy Waters to Buddy Guy, Howlin' Wolf and howling white boys, soulkittens Etta James and Janis Joplin, juke joint brawlers like Hound Dog Taylor, African torchbearer Ali Farka Toure, modern guitar heroes Stevie Ray Vaughan and Luther Allison, and even recent hit-makers Peggy Scott-Adams and Susan Tedeschi. And that's just a smidgen of the talents represented across more than 100 cuts. Nonetheless, there are grave omissions in disc five, which focuses on contemporary blues. The raw electric sound of present-day Mississippi, embodied by R.L. Burnside and other artists on the Fat Possum label, has done much to open the ears of college-age audiences and should be included. Also absent are the music's most important contemporary innovators: Afro-blues fusionist Corey Harris, psychedelic folk bluesman Otis Taylor and rap-blues proselytizer Chris Thomas King. Still, it's obvious this collection is a work of devotion and intelligence as well as commerce. --Ted Drozdowski

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Synopsis of the Blues.......2007-03-18

This collection is an excellent synopsis of the Blues from its earliest roots on the rercording medium to modern times. It also shows how far and wide this genre covers in the musical landscape with its influence on rock-and-roll and jazz. Besides having over 115 songs, there is also a companion booklet that documents every track. I really recommend this collection to anyone not familiar with the Blues, because it can be a great starting point for you to expand on an area you find more interesting, like the Kansas City blues in the 30s, Chicago blues in the 50s, or diverse individuals such as Lead Belly, T-Bone Walker, Howlin' Wolf, John Jee Hooker, and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

5 out of 5 stars Best blues compilation.......2006-07-13

IMO, this 5-disc set is par none the best blues compilation spanning over 50 years. Not everything noteworthy has been included, but it is the best bang for your buck you're going to find anywhere for a wide blues selection from early to recent, and Marty Scorese did a fantastic job in selection. I have given it as a gift several times and it is the gift that keeps on giving. Some very great tunes.

4 out of 5 stars Raw.......2006-06-19

This box set compliments the film series very well. Musically, the set is wonderful until the middle half of the fourth disc and wans quite considerably on the fifth disc. This is not only a matter of bad taste in choosing appropriate music for these parts of the set, it is merely a matter of musical history: the blues at the time in which these portions of the set cover was simple not very good music.
These portions would have been much better off if they included work by the likes of Carey Bell or RL Burnside instead of The Fabulous Thunderbirds and the Cock Rocker of Blues, Stevie Ray Vaughn.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Compilation on Blues Ever Made.......2006-06-03

One day in early 1968 I bought the album Wheels of Fire by Cream. Cream of course featured Eric Clapton.
I put on the live disc and listened to a song called "Crossroads" and became hooked.
At that time I didnt have a clue who Robert Johnson was or what blues was.
I over the years listened to blues through "White" artists like Eric Clapton, The Allman Bros and others.
One day I broke down and bought a Robert Johnson album and a whole new world was opened up to me.
I had no idea what "Mississippi Delta" blues was compared to "Chicago Blues" etc. For years I have listened to these recordings and was never able to hear the originals.
People like Eric Clapton have changed the arrangements on many of these songs to suit their styles. Now through this recording I am finally able to hear what the song was originally like. I personally love the slide guitar of the Mississippi Delta. I love the "rawness" of those recordings. I am also able to hear the electric side that came from Chicago as blues players migrated there. This Cd has the finest songs by the best blues artists ever.
This set includes Mississippi Fred McDowell, Robert Johnson, Skip James, BB King, Buddy Guy, Maceo Merriweather, Big Bill Broonzy, Muddy Waters, Son House and the list just goes on and on.
It also includes the "White" side of the blues including Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaugh, Bonnie Raitt and many others.
This is a celebration of the blues, and is a must for any collector, or fan of the blues. This CD is for people like me who have listened to the blues for so many years and now want to listen to the real thing.
You will never find a better collection in your lifetime....

5 out of 5 stars The best collection of blues I've ever heard. Period........2005-09-05

So much to love here--from fife and drum bands to rare acoustic blues recordings, to citified modern-day blues artists. These discs teach you a lot, but never come across as preachy or academic. When you hear Percy Mayfield or Guitar Slim you just want to turn the volume way up.

2 out of 5 stars not very relaxing.......2007-07-17

I was surprised to hear how fast many of the tracks are- not very relaxing in a massage environment.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful music!!!.......2006-11-06

This is one of the nicest musical CD's I've ever played for my massage clients! Some of the songs are a little faster than I normally like to play, but all in all, this is some great music!!!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful relaxing music.......2006-08-31

I bought this cd for my husband who is a massage therapist. It's one of his favorites. Clients enjoy it also. It has a variety of styles that are wonderful variations for guitar.

4 out of 5 stars Good if you like acoustical guitar.......2006-08-03

I enjoy this one for relaxation to acoustical guitar. Not quite as relaxing or long as a CD I bought specifically for massage background music.

5 out of 5 stars Sounds to Soothe and Uplift Your Soul.......2004-04-06

The magical music on this CD will touch the very core of your soul. Brenne's fingers dance over the strings, creating sounds that could only be created by a master guitarist. The songs are beautiful pieces of work; truly inspiring. I use this CD as an accompaniment to my work commute, background music for dinner parties (both group dinners and private dinners for two ;-), and as part of my meditation.

I look forward to more offerings from this artist. Give yourself the gift of this music. You'll be happy you did.

I just heard portions from this CD on NPR's Echoes program on my way to work on a cold dreary Saturday morning and the music by these guys made my day - if you need something to lift your spirits, transport you to a place of peace and encourage you to appreciate the beauty around you, this is the prescription you need. Album Description

Allow us to take a bit more space than we usually would for one recording, as it is a recording we not only feel will be critically acclaimed, but is also one of great importance in its origin and purpose...

The artist community out of Colorado Springs known as "Blue Renaissance Creative Group" is a non-profit organization which consists of the folk ensemble 100 Portraits, acoustic fusion band Calling Cedar, and several other independent artists, all holding a global vision for reaching the lost through music. They evolved organically apart from the music industry as an expression of the Body of Christ from this generation. They brought us the Enter The Worship Circle recording last year, something they threw together to document their worship time together. Astonishingly, that rough recording captured in a make-shift studio in an old house has sold over 70,000 copies.

Without much change, and paying little attention to the success of the previous recording, 100 Portraits, joined by other Blue Renaissance artists as well as Will Hunt of Apt.core, returns with more of their original and down to earth worship-oriented songs... this time with the same name, simply being distinguished by the sub-title Second Circle. Several of the folks from Blue Renaissance have often traveled to third world countries to share their talents in the outreach efforts of indigenous churches. In recent visits to India, they were inspired by the native instruments and songs found among the village churches, and in fact documented some of the sounds they encountered, mixing select portions of those samples into the new recording.

Driving Indian rhythms intertwine with fresh, intimate, uninhibited expressions of love and worship to create this ground-breaking album, using instruments such as tablas, dumbeks, an amazing sitar, and who knows what else. With all original songwriting, even a few seemingly improv lyrical inspirations captured during the live studio recording, Second Circle allows you to join the musicians in their realization of how deep, wide, and amazing the love of God is. This collection of passionate songs reflects a desire for simplicity and spontaneity in worship, with its use of basic instruments and genuine expression. Hand percussion and acoustic guitars, simple arrangements, and a new world of looping-rhythm sections blend throughout every track creating a beautiful tapestry. Blue Renaissance is designating a dollar from each sale to go to Christian orphanages and schools in India-- one US dollar is the equivalent of an entire day's wages in India.

Every once in a while something truly different comes forth from creative wombs by the grace of God, with power enough to change the way you think about music, worship, life... this is that something. We give it our strongest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars great for entering in to worship and His presence.......2007-05-26

This CD is really great and deep in worship for our Lord. It really helped to awaken and engage my heart in Jesus and His love. I really treasure the times I've been able to spend just listening to this cd in my room + worshiping Him. Of all of my favorite worship albums, this is one of the best I've yet heard. Some other great ones like this are "The World Can Wait" by the Merchant Band, Misty Edward's cd's, "I Can't Wait" by Various Artists (might only be available at ihop.org), the WOW greatest Worship songs, and "Worship" by Micheal W. Smith.

5 out of 5 stars crying worship.......2004-02-25

this album has been such a blessing to me! the songs on this cd are so prayerful, thankful, meditative and heartfelt! for anyone in need of pure worship in tears to God, this is it.

5 out of 5 stars Not one to pass up........2003-11-29

When I first purchased this cd off of Amazon, I was already familiar with the first circle. I had actually bought this cd for a friend of mine for her birthday. a little later, I got a chance to listen to the same songs and borrow the cd in depth. (Ok, I admit it, she burned it for me.)
Were my expectations high? Yep. Were my expectations met?
Oh yeah.
It's really hard to write a review on a worship cd, because a worship cd is either kinda dull, and you like the sound of the songs, but you dont really get anything out of it, or it blows you away. And I have to say, that the songs on this cd have blown me away, and brought me to a deeper level of worship. (If any of you gifted people who helped produce this cd are reading this, then thank you for moving in the spirit.) But, I wanted to write a short review for those of you who may be interested in this but are not sure.
The cd starts off in much of the same style as the first circle with the song I Will Bow. the first 6 tracks on this cd are incredibly powerful words that are spoken directly to God. Especially, in my opinion, Near to you, and Faithful. Rush River Rush, and Praise Awaits You, (Tracks 7 and 8) are incredible worship songs. Lost Art of Living was a bit of a culture shock to me at first. It's style is actually more eastern. But its really a cool song/poem. The rest of the songs are awesome, and I had to dance to All I Need, and I Cannot Hide My Love.
The style of the music is hard to describe for me. If you just wont listen to music without heavy guitar or drums, then you wouldnt enjoy this cd for its musical value, although there are some sweet guitar chords and combinations in here. Most of the stuff is soft, and even the faster songs are very rythmic. but if your just looking for an awesome cd to worship God to, then I would recommend this to you as a valuable treasure, and an excellent addition or start to your worship collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great music should be recognized..........2002-12-30

Gypsy Soul has some of the best music I've ever heard when it comes to Celtic, Folk, Love songs, etc. Everybody should give them a listen, not only because of the great vocals but also because of the mood they set and put you in while listening to them! Give them a try!

5 out of 5 stars A journey worth taking..........2002-11-19

Amazing! All the tracks on this album are noteworthy, but a few really stand out, in particular the opening track, Promises and Lies, and track #3, Who. This is music which makes you think, then carries you beyond thinking and into a much deeper place. The arrangements are exquisite and the vocals soar. Highly, highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Journey Gypsy Soul.......2002-11-17

The journey CD is so cool. The best CD they have produced yet. I love it very much. Gypsy Soul is a great band.

5 out of 5 stars An exciting discovery..........2002-11-12

There are bands whose music speaks to the head banging animal, clawing its way up from the darkness, within us all. Then there are musicians whose music speaks to our emotions, eliciting tears of joy and sadness. And then, there are artists whose music passes through the sublime and speaks directly to our souls. These are such artists. Once you experience their gifts of the soul, you will be forever changed, and better for the journey.

5 out of 5 stars My JOURNEY ends here!.......2002-11-05

Ok I am here! I have arrived at my destination! I have heard one of the best cd's that I have ever heard! Gypsy Soul is just the best. As I sat listening to this beautiful cd I felt peace, love, joy, sadness, longing and some of the best music that is available today! Cilette's voice is THE BEST female voice in the music industry today. I mean it.....after you listen to her sing, tell me who can you think of that is better? Roman is a MASTER on the guitar & bass! I think this is a must purchase for anyone who is into music!

Superbly packaged and lovingly annotated, the five-disc Arhoolie Records 40th Anniversary Collection distills four decades of musical passion into six hours of highlights. The passion is that of Arhoolie founder Chris Strachwitz, a German immigrant and former California schoolteacher whose label reflects a devotion to American roots music at its most vital and varied. Southern bluesmen Mance Lipscomb and Fred McDowell, Louisiana zydeco kingpin Clifton Chenier, and Tex-Mex conjunto accordionist Flaco Jimenez are just a few of the regional mainstays to achieve national renown through Arhoolie, and all of them are represented here.

The spirited diversity of the 105 selections (including 13 available on CD for the first time) finds the label extending its reach from string-band country (Hackberry Ramblers) to hard-driving jazz (Jerry Hahn Quintet) to New Orleans brass bands to more recent forays into "sacred steel," featuring gospel music with pedal-steel guitar. Where so many folk preservations might as well be embalming musical relics, Arhoolie champions "vernacular music": music that retains a strong, integral connection to its community and gets people clapping, stomping, and dancing. Throughout the set, the immediacy of the performances transcends trendiness or timeliness, showing how America sounds beyond the plasticity of popular culture. --Don McLeese

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars You'll enjoy this journey!.......2005-01-18

If you're a fan of living/breathing folk music, not whitebread I-gave-my-love-a-cherry acoustic music, but vibrant music from backwoods, churches and back alley sub-cultures obscured and ignored by the modern world, then this collection is for you.

In the early 80's I became a big fan of Clifton Chenier, the King of Zydeco. Collecting his records was the first time I encountered the Arhoolie label. I began to see that other artists I enjoyed were also on the label Beasoleil, Fred McDowell, Mance Lipscomb and others. It got to where I'd buy records just because of that red and black label. Even if I'd never heard of the artist I could always bank on the record being interesting and that is all because of Chris Strachwitz. He's the owner but he's also the guy out there beating the bushes to find this stuff and most of the music collected here he recorded himself in the field.

Arhoolie has managed to remain an independent record label which is saying something in this day and age and that independence keeps it vital. There is a recording in this collection by a street artist name Bongo Joe, whose music is essentially Joe improvising lyrics while beating out a rythm on a metal 50 gal. oil drum. Everytime I hear this track I smile because it's so wild and also because I know this guy would be out in the street doing this whether someone recorded him or not. Thank god someone did and they did it because they saw the intrinsic value in this mans art, not the chance to make a million dollars.

The booklet that accompanies the collection is full of wonderful photos, history and stories. Mr. Strachwitz shares his field recording technique of having one microphone in the center with the artists gathered around it which lends these recordings a comfortable charm. I could not agree more with the reviewer who said this collection is a nice companion to the Anthology of American Folk Music, it provides a nice bookend for that hallowed collection. I started out by saying this is living/breathing folk music. I did not mean to infer that these artists are still alive (though some are), rather that the sub-cultures that spawned these artists are still out there. We should all take comfort in that.

5 out of 5 stars Great set and great value for money.......2002-01-27

This is a truly wondrful set that works on every level.

Beautifully presented with a very informative book and five high quality CD's.

The sound quality is superb as are all the production values.

The mixture of world music, old-time music and American regional sounds, as repesented in the output of Arhoolie Records, works extremely well here.

I found my self playing all 5 CD's one after the other without strain and enjoying them all.

Once having heard many of the artists for te first time the search wil then commence for solo albums if they exist, and they probably do in most cases.

If this were a "Bear Family" set there would certainly be another $... on the askng price.

If you are already a fan of this type of musci or are looking to explore it furter this really is THE set to buy as a starting point.

All the tracks are strong and there is no "padding" at all.

Combine this with a quite outstanding book giving full details on the artists and the history of Arhoolie and this is a set that will be cherished for years to come and played with great regularity.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Treasury of Obscurities.......2001-10-18

I wasn't sure how I was going to like this box set when I bought it because I had never heard of most of the artists. When I first obtained it, I listened through once then put it on the shelf. On a recent road trip, I decided to put all 5 CDs in my CD changer to listen to in sequence and lemme tell you, am I ever glad to have done so.
The Journey of Chris Strachwitz is a musical journey through parts of America most of us never see or hear. There is Cajun, Zydeco, country, Tejano, blues, gospel and more. There is not the polished, overproduced kind of music one often hears on the radio, but rather the raw authenticity of music being played straight from the heart. Most of these musicians have made very little money in the business and are forced to do other work in order to make ends meet. Its a shame because just the small sampling here shows me that most of these artists have more talent than an army of top-40 schlocksters like Backstreet Boys and Madonna.
I am not equally enthusiastic about every song, but I was introduced to many performers from whom I want to hear more. Its hard to choose favorites, but I was impressed with Mance Lipscomb, the Reverend Louis Overstreet, Lydia Mendoza, Valerio Longoria, Omar Sharriff, Chatuye, The Campbell Brothers, and Aubrey Ghent in addition to more familiar performers like Clifton Chenier, Charlie Musselwhite, and any of the Jimenez clan. The worst song on the album is more pleasurable listening than most of the vapid pap served up on commercial radio.
With the CDs comes an informative booklet, filled with photos and stories of the performers and the sometimes serendipitous ways that Strachwitz hooked up with them.
If your musical taste runs the gamut, you should like this fairly priced box set. Chris Strachwitz did American music a tremendous turn when he set out to capture the sound of the folk before it was lost to us forever. I give this treasury of obscurities my heartiest recommendation. You won't be sorry you bought this!

5 out of 5 stars a real summer journey.......2001-05-23

This is a really strong collection of hard to find artists that will appeal to anyone interested in the history of American music and culture. The blues is incredible. The cajun and zydeco numbers are unbeatable. Same is true of bluegrass, texmex, gospel. Where did rock get its start? Forget the name artists who've received all the accolades, these are the artists that influenced the names. The real deal - presented in its raw format as much as possible. Despite 5 CDs of material, weak tracks are hard to find.

5 out of 5 stars an absolute must have.......2001-03-06

I could not agree more with the previous reviewer. This box set is perhaps the finest collection of American roots music, and much, much more, on the market today. Chris Strachwitz deserves our gratitude for bringing us forty years of top quality music, and for distilling his recordings down to this package, which could not possibly be better. Turn off your radio and turn on this goldmine of treasures from four decades of one man's undying love for the music that made this country great. Worth every penny, even at twice the price.

Album Description

I focused on my favorite places across North Carolina and traveled there for inspiration. Using my guitar, Celtic whistles and piano I composed 14 songs. Later other layers of instrumentation were added including cello, violin, hammered dulcimer, flute, saxophone, bass, organ and percussion by a group of outstanding musicians.

Next, I took a digital tape deck and returned to many of these spots and recorded natural sounds that reminded me of these treasured locations. I have woven together many of these sounds into the fabric of the songs. Sounds of waterfalls, rushing rivers, tin roof rain, migratory songbirds, tundra swans and distant trains add a vibrant thread of realism to the melodies.

What a warm and "Peaceful Journey" this has been for me! Thank you for traveling with me for sojourns at Ocracoke, Montreat, Kanuga, Lake Mattamuskeet, Bath, Roan Mountain, Roaring Gap, Morganton, the Roanoke River, Grandfather Mountain and other locations.

5 out of 5 stars Truly a peaceful musical journey.......2005-05-06

A beautiful piece of work and such a wonderful representation of North Carolina. With each play, you hear something you did not hear previously. The combination of music and natural sounds sets a mood that is very unique. Bill Leslie is known to us in North Carolina as a trusted reporter and native of our great state. He is also a very talented artist. A Peaceful Journey is a unique experience.

5 out of 5 stars Peaceful Journey is incredibly soothing........2004-12-13

"Peaceful Journey" by Bill Leslie is one of the most pleasant, soothing and melodic albums I have ever heard. Integrating natural sounds with original tunes written for flute, acoustic guitar, cello, violin, piano and hammered dulcimer, Leslie has created a masterpiece honoring the North Carolina landscape he loves so much. This CD is a perfect companion for a long road trip or a peaceful evening at home.

"Extremis," the truly lame single on which X-Filer Gillian Anderson makes the first of what will likely be many bad career moves, sounds and feels like electronica's death knell. The rest of Disc one here redeems the genre with fine body slams by Fluke and Chemical Bros. Disc two delves into the past with ambient trips by David Sylvian, Brian Eno, and William Orbit, among others. --Jeff Bateman

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars it's the music.......2006-02-17

at the peak of the late-90's electronica craze, compilations like this were popping up all over the place. as grunge faded and rock seemed moribund, the music industry was desperate for something new, something original, something to spark the public's interest enough for them to buy buy buy. labels big and small thought they'd hit on the next big thing, and tried any gimmick to promote it. hence this cd of tracks purportedly selected by gillian anderson herself.
at the time she was a big name on a huge television series, though now, nearly ten years after this release, no one seems to know where she is. how this deal got made we won't know. did she approach someone about this project? maybe she knew someone making electronica and wanted to mumble over a track. maybe someone thought putting her name on a cd would boost sales. however it happened, this cd resulted. and what a cd it is.
you can ignore the track with ms. anderson on it--it's standard electronica fare with her vocalising something vaguely in line with her character on the x-files. after that, the album really takes off. though the flow might not be ideal, the selection is stunning, and the very fact of one great track coming after another is reason enough to get this.
the album is frontloaded with the more energetic tracks on the first disc. this is also the more diverse disc, with everything from the chemical brothers to the future sound of london to mu-ziq making an appearance. most of the would-be stars (some of whom did in fact become temporary stars) of the electronica movement are here. pretty much every song on this disc should prompt you to do out and buy an album by each artist.
the second disc is more relaxed, meandering into ambience towards the end. this is by no means a knock on its quality, but after the first disc it feels like a bit of a let down. the songs are still great, but they wind down into dreamland pretty quickly. still, you should probably have an album from each of these artists as well.
at least, that's the idea of this compilation, to develop a wider audience for this music, to push it into the popular consciousness. the lack of a follow-up, or any future mixes connected with gillian anderson, implies that this was not a successful move. instead, rap-metal took over, with its own consessions to electronics and atmosphere, and electronica faded back to the subculture from which it rose.

5 out of 5 stars Heaven Sent... I first heard this in 1998.......2003-11-18

it was out in double cassette then. the only reason I'm writting this review is because of "cdnow's" review. HA HA! nothing but top reviews. Shows how out of touch this guy is!

Anyway... the music.... loved all but two tracks.... the salsa and mesq. was a little monotonous as was??? whatever.

his cd is in my top 10 of the 1500 cd's in my collection. I've been into electronica since 1988 and it really doesn't get much better than this.... the next best thing being a live show... check out Ladytron, they are the next beig thing in electronica... 70's mellow acid beets meets 2003!

5 out of 5 stars Very Good!!!.......2003-08-07

If you are a techno fan, then this c.d is a must-have!!! I have to admit that I only checked out this c.d because I am a huge Gillian Anderson fan but after listening to it I totally forgot she compiled the songs and even sang one herself.

I really enjoyed listening to it and am now a fan of techno. My reason for this review is that if you are not a Gillian Anderson fan, then you don't have to put down this c.d or ignore it because you see her name on the cover. It has a lot of great material and any techno fan will love it. And if you are a Gillian Anderson fan, then more power to ya because this is one more thing that you can enjoy of hers!

5 out of 5 stars Well Worth Your Time!.......2002-04-25

If you like techno/electronica, you are going to love this album. There is a good cross-sampling of songs that give you a flavor of the artists featured. I ended up buying other CDs after hearing some of the selections featured here. I first heard this CD compilation from a friend at work who shares my taste in music and had to buy a copy of my own. I didn't realize that it was compiled by Gillian Anderson until I came to Amazon.com to buy it. Don't base your purchase decision on what some of the "reviewers" have to say about their personal feelings for Ms. Anderson, the artists and selections featured on this compilation are great. If you don't believe me, then sample the selections for yourself on this page.

1 out of 5 stars Why?.......2001-06-30

I think the only possible way to react to this release is: "Who Cares"?

Who cares what Gillian Anderson listens to? Is she famous for her friggin 'taste'? I don't think so.

What's next? Assorted Chocolates compiled by Gillian Anderson? Swimsuit hunks compiled by Gillian Anderson?

Gimme a break. I'm dying to know how much it cost the record company to stick her name on a friggin mix-tape.

Buy this CD if you like the music, but I can't for the life of me figure out why her name's on it.

    Album Description

Ann Arbor, Michigan, seems an unlikely site for the establishment of a major avant-garde festival that would shake the new-music community. Tucked away in America's heartland, the city is equally removed from the Eastern metropolises whose artists pride themselves on sensing the pulse of the times, and from the nonconformist West Coast. Yet during the 1960s Ann Arbor played host to one of the most extraordinary adventures in American music history: the annual ONCE Festival and its nexus of related activities.

The primary aim of ONCE's founders--Robert Ashley, Gordon Mumma, George Cacioppo, Roger Reynolds, and Donald Scavarda--was to create a forum for the presentation of cutting-edge music. To this end they were phenomenally successful. Performers and composers--whether little-known or renowned--embraced the endeavor, demanding almost nothing in return. Perhaps most important, however, ONCE acted as a creative stimulus for its organizers. Scavarda describes the adventure as an explosion of pent-up energy: "Suddenly we could write anything we wanted and have it heard." And they did. The ONCE composers--and many guest artists--wrote a host of new works, some experimental, others more traditional.

What united the ONCE composers was their exploration of sound, whether through the medium of extended techniques on traditional instruments, electronic (or electronically modified) timbres, or the intersection of musical sounds with those of the environment.

A major slice of ONCE's rich musical legacy--35 works constituting six hours of music--is presented here, almost all for the first time. These pieces are as diverse in style as they are compelling in expression. This landmark set, the most comprehensive document ever released of this legendary event, is an opportunity for anyone interested in contemporary music to hear history in the making. Included in the set is a 140-page booklet with a lengthy scholarly essay by musicologist and biographer Leta Miller and numerous rare photos of ONCE personages and performances.
