Dorris Henderson was an anomalous part of the mid-1960s British folk scene--a young Black American woman, singing traditional songs with accompaniment from one of the best young British folk guitarists, John Renbourn. With Renbourn, Henderson recorded a couple of rare albums, There You Go (1965) and Watch the Stars (1966), and also did a 1965 single of Paul Simon's "Leaves That Are Green." Henderson had a strong, unflappable vocal presence somewhat reminiscent of a more youthful Odetta. Her repertoire encompassed all kinds of traditional folk, with a particular affinity for Appalachian songs, although some narrow-minded English critics expected her to be concentrating more on blues and spirituals. Born in Florida and raised in Los Angeles, Henderson performed at LA folk clubs such as the Ash Grove and the Troubadour before moving to England in 1965, partly on the recommendation of a brother in the US airforce who was stationed there. Soon after arriving she got a musical residency on a BBC children's TV show, Gadzooks! Her first album was the first available recording to prominently feature Renbourn (although he had recorded, but not yet released, his solo debut slightly earlier). The collaboration lasted for only one more LP, Renbourn soon joining the star folk group Pentangle. Henderson joined the cult folk group Eclection (with future Fotheringay/Fairport Convention guitarist Trevor Lucas) for a year, although she only made one single with them. After the 1960s she worked with some jazz musicians and sang same ad jingles, and reunited with Renbourn for occasional performances in the 1990's. Flegdling. 2005.

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.

If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."

This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.

The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!

Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.

This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.

There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.

This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.

This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!

I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

I wonder how many people saw the ad for this CD on TV and ordered it right away without looking further into the contents. Brightman? Bocelli? Pavarotti? Florez? Watson? All Three Tenors? All on one CD? Sounded like a winner in the ad. They don't mention the Main Title from Star Wars. Nor do they mention (even Amazon doesn't show it!), that Anne Sofie Von Otter's performance is actually a duet with Elvis Costello, who simply does not have the chops or vocal gifts that most of the other artists on this CD are blessed with. In fact, that song is positively dreadful, and it's all because of Costello's vocally-strained style. What the hell is he doing on this CD? The rest of this CD is generally fine, but certainly do not expect a CD full of classical music, and be prepared to skip song #2 every time you play the CD.

This type of album would not be released today. All of the arrangements are impeccably done...I have read many a book at night with this playing in the background. It's a shame that Morton Gould gets lumped into the "elevator music" category by today's so called music critics that can't reference anything before 1980 that wasn't spoon fed to them by Rolling Stone or MTV. It's worth it for the Living Stereo recording alone!

Wow, I'm glad I bought this when I did! Evidently it's gone out of print again... Kudos to RCA for releasing it on CD in the first place. I bought the vinyl years ago, and spent many a pleasant evening fading into dreamland listening to Mr. Gould's orchestra working through "All Through the Night" etc... Even if it weren't for the beautiful music within, this one would be worth it for the artwork on the front and back covers alone. A beautiful effort from one of America's great 20th century composers and conductors, Richmond Hill's own Morton Gould

The full title of this CD is "Tom Ardolino Presents: The Makers of Smooth Music (MSR Madness Vol. 2)". MSR Madness Vol. 1 was titled "The Beat of the Traps" and was released on vinyl only. But fear not, 12 of the 16 tracks from The Beat of the Traps are included here, with the remaining 4 tracks included on the MSR Madness Vol. 3 CD. So, what the heck does MSR Madness mean anyway? Well, MSR Records was the leading producer of song-poem records. Okay, so what are song-poems? They are lyrics which have been set to music for a fee. Typically, the service was promoted through small display ads in popular magazines, comic books, tabloids, men's adventure journals and similar publications with a headline reading (essentially) Send in Your Poems - Songwriters Make Thousands of Dollars - Free Evaluation. The term lyrics was avoided because it was assumed potential customers would not understand what the term meant. People who sent their poetry usually received notice by mail that their work was worthy of recording by professional musicians, along with a proposal to do so in exchange for a fee. The melodies were either improvised or recycled and musicians often recorded dozens of songs per recording session using minimal resources, often in one take. The recordings were then duplicated on 45 RPM vinyl singles or compilation LPs with dozens of other songs by amateur lyric writers. Copies were sent to the customer. Promises that they would also be sent to radio stations or music industry executives were rarely if ever kept -- partly because the recordings would not have been taken seriously by professionals. The practice played off the intense desire of unsophisticated people to realize their ambitions of making money from writing popular songs. In the 1990s, some record collectors "rediscovered" these recordings. The main attraction of them is how kooky some of them are. Some these songs have really bizarre lyrics and off-kilter performances. If you enjoy hearing oddball music, you'll probably get a kick out of this CD.

    Album Description

    Dorris Henderson was an anomalous part of the mid-1960s British folk scene--a young Black American woman, singing traditional songs with accompaniment from one of the best young British folk guitarists, John Renbourn. With Renbourn, Henderson recorded a couple of rare albums, There You Go (1965) and Watch the Stars (1966), and also did a 1965 single of Paul Simon's "Leaves That Are Green." Henderson had a strong, unflappable vocal presence somewhat reminiscent of a more youthful Odetta. Her repertoire encompassed all kinds of traditional folk, with a particular affinity for Appalachian songs, although some narrow-minded English critics expected her to be concentrating more on blues and spirituals. Born in Florida and raised in Los Angeles, Henderson performed at LA folk clubs such as the Ash Grove and the Troubadour before moving to England in 1965, partly on the recommendation of a brother in the US airforce who was stationed there. Soon after arriving she got a musical residency on a BBC children's TV show, Gadzooks! Her first album was the first available recording to prominently feature Renbourn (although he had recorded, but not yet released, his solo debut slightly earlier). The collaboration lasted for only one more LP, Renbourn soon joining the star folk group Pentangle. Henderson joined the cult folk group Eclection (with future Fotheringay/Fairport Convention guitarist Trevor Lucas) for a year, although she only made one single with them. After the 1960s she worked with some jazz musicians and sang same ad jingles, and reunited with Renbourn for occasional performances in the 1990's. Flegdling. 2005.

For this Carefullly Remastered Edition Fledg'ling have Restored all the Elements of the Original Artwork and Added Several Previously Unpublished Photographs
