5 out of 5 stars Great music from a great dizzie band.......2006-11-10

This cd, which contains two different LPs (Washington Square/More Sounds of Washington Square) from the Village Stompers is just great. The unique sound of the banjo and the dizzie rythm (even transforming the classic Dylans Blowin' in the wind) makes it a must for classic jazz and dizzie lovers. Of course it contains his first big hit Washington Square and Midnight In Moscow, along with classics as The saints and Melodie d'amour. Great sound, great stuff.

1 out of 5 stars Major Disappointment.......2006-10-18

I can't find anywhere in the description that this is an instrumental-only presentation. NO VOCALS. I wanted to hear the words!. If it had said anywhere "instrumental" I wouldn't have purchased it.

5 out of 5 stars WashingtonSqare/More sounds of Washington Square.......2005-08-03

What a treat after all these years. I had purchased the album of Washington Square almost 40 years ago. It was my favorite and I decided to see if I could find it again on CD. I am so thrilled to have it. It is the best sound and great music. I was not disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Stompin'..........2003-02-07

In the quiet before the storm of the British invasion, instrumentals were often a major part of the American pop charts. Nevertheless, though instrumentals were a commonplace occurance, for a banjo-infused Dixieland-style tune to climb the charts missing the top spot by a single notch was indeed a surprising event. This unlikely achievement came in the form of the Village Stompers, a group of Dixieland band veterans, performing a jaunty, swinging tune tagged "Washington Square". Their unique sound also garnered enough attention to send their "Washington Square" lp into the top five of the album charts as well. Although the uniqueness of their sound was somewhat expended and subsequent singles did not fare very well, the Stompers continued to record albums into the later 60's. While their 45's did not garner much chart success after the initial blast, the tunes included here are very listenable and can no way be considered album filler as may be found in so many other albums based on a single hit. This two-fer combo of the Stompers' first two albums from Collectables contains these complete albums plus two bonus tracks in the form of their two other charting singles. This piece has been competently constructed with respectable sound quality and a brief musical backround of the group in the liner notes. The music here sounds as refreshing now as it did in its heyday and it is a welcome pleasure to have this music available in clean digital quality after years of laying dormant in Epic's vaults.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated music, underrated band.......2002-02-09

It's a shame traditional jazz gets smirked at by some folks. The guys at work call this "pizza parlor music." Granted, some Dixieland bands are goofy. So are some rock bands, some country bands, etc., etc.

In my view, these kinds of musicians pour more energy into their performance than anybody. Not into artistic experimentation (at my expense), not into bounding around the stage, not into setting their instruments on fire, not into yelling but into the shear enjoyment of making music for someone to enjoy. And almost nobody has done it better than the Stompers. Their musicianship and their cover of non-traditional Dixieland numbers is a hot combination that never gets old.

Back in the '60's I had all their albums on vinyl --all gone now. Thanks to technology and Amazon and other on-line stores, I have been able to appreciate what I've missed the last 30 years.

I love these guys. If you love Dixieland and perhaps if you never did previously, you will probably love them too. And if you haven't done so already, give a listen to their 60's British comtemporaries, Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen. They are similar in many ways to the Stompers only it's as if they have had a WHOLE LOT of strong coffee to drink before their sessions!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Soundtrack !.......2007-06-08

One of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. To me it's in "Amadeus" territory. Sublime, ethereal. Few soundtracks or any 'album' have all great songs. This one does. From the lovely duet to the children's "The String Song" you will be thoroughly entertained. I'm so glad I saw the movie on Netflix. I could not wait to buy the music. Just great. Has there been any recogniton for this composer?

5 out of 5 stars The movie is good, the music is striking!.......2006-03-09

The MUSIC of "Washington Square" is exquisite...charming...stunning...beyond words! I thought the movie of "Washington Square" was well-done, although I must admit to having a preference for the 1949 version called "The Heiress"...I must say, though, that the music for "Washington Square" is what keeps me watching this film again & again, and especially listening to the soundtrack!

It is poignant, lingering, striking, dazzling: the piano & strings are amazing: the singing is incredibly well done! My favorite is "Tu Chiami Una Vita," the beginning version "Catherine & Morris - Tu Chiami Una Vita" and the absolutely exquisite ending version "Please Don't Come Here Again - Tu Chiami Una Vita"...the delightful "L'Absence" and "L'Absence Again" is pleasing as well, haunting and superb! The cute & child-like "The Tale of the String," the superb "Catherine's Nocturne" which is repeated in the final version of "Tu Chiami Una Vita"...amazing!

I must say that the music of "Washington Square" is sincerely what won me over: the storyline is fine, it is difficult to watch (with Catherine so inept), but the music just absolutely made the movie for me: even if you don't for the movie at all, this music stands alone: decidedly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2004-10-14

I recently saw the Washington Square movie on Starz and although I thought that the movie was just ok ( I prefer the version with Olivia DeHavilland "The Heiress") the music blew me away. You can feel the emotion in the melody, the strings and the piano. Simply beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars tu chiami una vita.......2003-02-27

I also am a piano student and tried without success to obtain a copy of the sheet music to learn this piece - which is the loveliest piece of music I have ever heard. Anyone out there know where I can get ahold of the music??

5 out of 5 stars Tu chiami una vita.......2002-03-27

Absolutely beautiful. When I saw the film I was enchanted with the music especially 'tu chiami una vita' I searched for the music thinking there must be a collection by Salvatore Quasimodo, but have not been able to find any recordings except on the movie's soundtrack. Now I hear it was done especially for the movie. I am happy ot add this soundtrack to my collection of classical music

3 out of 5 stars Ethel Deserved Better Than This.......2001-06-22

There may indeed be no business like show business. RCA was a major backer of this musical, and fully expected to record the original cast album. Decca, Merman's recording label, wouldn't allow her to appear. The solution the two compnaies decided on was an original cast album on RCA featuring Dinah Shore doing Merman's numbers, and this mediocre studio album.

Decca was never a winner when it came to modern recording techniques. Merman's voice has no echo or reverb to enhance her performance. The arrangements are by Gordon Jenkins, which fit Ethel's style like it was a dress bought in a bargain basement. It is a shame that in the later years of her life, Ethel didn't choose to revisit this score and re-record it, as she did with Annie Get Your Gun twice.

The selections from Panama Hattie are a nice rarity, but they are taken from scratchy shellac originals. There are several compilations that include these numbers with no annoying extraneous noise.

5 out of 5 stars Superb sound, a great legacy of 2 fine singers.......2006-05-16

"Rose of Washington Square" was a large scale production in 1939 by 20th Century Fox, starring its 2 biggest box office stars, Alice Faye and Tyrone Power. The film was a thinly disguised tale of the life of Fanny Brice and Brice sued the studio for plagiarism. The story appeared as "Funny Girl" with Streisand in the sixties.

The film underwent severe editing and at least 4 songs were cut from the released print. This CD contains the complete score for the film with alternate takes, deleted songs and the numbers which appear in the film but without disruptive dialogue. It is interesting that so much fine music did not appear in the released film.

The recordings are crystal clear and both Faye and Al Jolson sound fantastic. The CD is an unexpected treasure and maybe the best legacy of the talents of Faye and Jolson.

You don't need to know the film to appreciate the music.

5 out of 5 stars Jolson at his best; Faye also great.......2001-04-29

The CD is simply great. Jolson, in 1939, was in the best voice of his career. His "Rock-a-Bye," "California," and "April Showers" are among his best ever renditions. Alice Faye did not have a great voice, but had a sweet tone and a distinctive style. Her rendition of "My Man," "I Never Knew Heaven Could Speak," and title song- great. And it's a treat to have the outtakes, with alternate versions of some of the songs.

      5 out of 5 stars A great soundtrack.......2000-08-14

This CD features Alice Faye and Al Jolson at their best and most memorable. Jolson sounds great singing his signature songs. Faye is equally good, especially during "My Man," "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows," and "I'm Just Wild About Harry". Sadly, Faye ceased recording in 1937 due to contractual restrictions, so listening to her in this soundtrack is particularly pleasant. Hopefully Varese Sarabande will also release the soundtracks of other Alice Faye films, especially "Alexander's Ragtime Band" and "Hello, Frisco, Hello" (which includes her signature song "You'll Never Know") in the nearby future.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Surprise! Wonderful performances by Faye & Jolson!.......1999-11-14

This new soundtrack release is taken directly from the original ROSE OF WASHINGTON SQ soundtrack source materials located at the Fox Studios. Its amazing how fresh these recordings sound after 60 years! Most of the songs were standards when the movie was in production. Only one new song was written for the film, I NEVER KNEW HEAVEN COULD SPEAK, sung by Alice Faye. I have not heard Al Jolson sound better singing some of his standards like CALIFORNIA HERE I COME and ROCK A BYE YOUR BABY WITH A DIXIE MELODY. Alice Faye sounds wonderful singing MY MAN, I'M ALWAYS CHASING RAINBOWS and the title tune. To round out the collection several outakes and alternates versions of the songs are included. Apparently the recording standards on Hollywood sound stages were much higher than those of record studios at the time sime the sound is remarkabe. Lets hope Varese/Fox can come up with more classic winners like this. Perhaps a Betty Grable series or more Alice Faye?

It was distinctly ironic: at the very zenith of America's postwar space-age love affair with TV, 3-D, and rock & roll (and other disposable cultural ephemera), a grassroots movement set out to recapture the country's lost musical heritage. These curious minds not only found it in a wealth of seemingly forgotten protest songs, spiritual blues, and country laments, but also forged new songs in its image. That this crusade sprang from lower Manhattan's Washington Square and the doorstep of New York University made the paradox all the sweeter. Ted Myers, the producer of this triple-disc anthology, grew up just blocks from the epicenter of that folk-quake, and his generous sense of place and time permeates this rich collection. Generally misunderstood and historically pigeonholed, the era finally gets its due, chronicled here by 72 tracks that extend far beyond the roots-conscious work of Woody Guthrie, the Weavers, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, and Pete Seeger on one hand, and the more popular material by the Kingston Trio, Limeliters, Joan Baez, and Bob Dylan on the other. Culturally, the Folk movement was the alt-rock of its day--if eminently more conscious of history and politically committed. Musically, it encompassed an ethos that enthusiastically blurred the boundaries between blues, Appalachian ballads, jug music, pure country, honky-tonk, work songs, and even unbridled novelty; this set explores them all, often with a palpable sense of discovery. Historically, the movement championed preservation at the same time it gleefully tweaked old sensibilities in pursuit of new inspiration. Listen and you'll hear music that became touchstones for artists as diverse as the Byrds, Roberta Flack, Rod Stewart, and--wittingly or not--every passionate coffeehouse minstrel who's strode on stage with a guitar ever since. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars The BEST Folk Revival Collection PERIOD.......2005-01-12

I'm not one who is too fast to gush about a slick cd set but even after owning it for a couple years I can't say enough about this one.

First and foremost is the varied and intelligent song selection that blends, in chronological order, traditional, folk-blues, Cambridge jug band revival, early and later protest songs, and the birth of the singer-songwriter era. The selections seem to have been chosen for their musical integrity, not just to represent a certain sub-genre or for sentimental value. Out of 72 cuts, there's only about 5 that I don't like, often because they were performed with an earnestness seems silly today. Mericfully, there is no Kumbaya.

This set also mixes the best known icons of the era (Dylan, Baez, PP&M) with those who are well known to fans of the music but perhaps less so by the public (Ochs, Paxton, Odetta, Brand, von Ronk) and greater performers and writers who may be unknown to younger audiences because they've mostly been undeservedly out of print the last few decades (Hamilton Camp, Carolyn Hester, "Rick" (ha!) Von Schmidt, Hedy West, Judy Henske, Rounders).

Best of all, unlike pretty much all the other sets out there, this one has very few pop-folk songs mixed in. No doo-wop Wimoweh, Coca Cola commercials, or Gordon Jenkins string sections, not that those recordings can't be enjoyed on other terms. There is just so much more meat here than in the larger sets you may have seen on TV that it this set is worth the premium prices used copies are starting to sell for.

The booklet has intersting notes on the songs and performers, although some seem to be recylced and not original to this set. And there are sine pictures that melted my heart. A teenage Mary Travers with friends in WSP in 1955 (may she have a speedy recovery from her health challenges)!

Finally, the sound quality is mostly very good. I have several of the original pressings and generally the versions on this set sound better.

Oh yeah, The Motorcyle Song is the hard to find long talking verion!

5 out of 5 stars Best folk revival anthology ever!!.......2001-11-10

Since CDs started predominating the form in which music is available to the consumer, there have been many folk reissues. But this one is by far, the best collection of reissues I've seen or heard. It's only problem -- if it's even a problem -- is that after you've listened to all 72 tracks, you're left wanting more. The sound quality too is excellent. Go for it!

About 6 years ago, I bought Rhino's "Troubadours of the Folk Era" CD's. They introduced me to many folk singers whom I now know intimately. Taking that one better, Rhino now has this 3 CD set with pictures, liner notes and personal essays. Buyer beware, if you do have the Troubadours CD's, you may be disappointed to learn that many of the same recordings do pop up here. The good news is that there is a wealth of other material here to select from. Joni Mitchell is explained as not appearing due to licensing restrictions in this collection, yet oddly, she appeared on the Troubadour series. Conversely, Dylan appears here although he was not on Troubadours. The times are a'changin' I guess. I do have some minor quibbles with the material selected... "There but for Fortune" is not, in my opinion, the best Joan Baez choice for this collection, as it was released later in the 60's and doesn't have as much of that Washington Square flavor as say, "We Shall Overcome" or any of her broadside ballads do. Also, why do they select "Codine" from Buffy Sainte Marie, which is one of the hardest songs of hers to appreciate at first listening? Also, with lesser known artists such as Judy henske whose older material is NOT available on CD, why do we have "High Flying Bird" yet again, as on Troubadours? It's an amazing song, but for those of us starved for Henske, another selection would have been adequate.

That said, this is still worth having, for its historical impact and musical pleasure. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Boomer nostalgia trip.......2001-07-07

I can't write about this CD in the third person as the other reviewers have because many of the songs bring up vivid memories of the singers and other events happening at the time that were related to those songs. I'm listening to this CD at work, and I would have gotten through all three CDs if I didn't keep repeating some of the songs endlessly. As one who owned about half of these songs on LP, if I were to create a CD with representative songs of the era, many of the same songs would be on it.

Some of my all time favoritesongs are included like "Pack up your sorrows," "Thirsty boots," and "I can't help but wonder where I'm bound." These are on CDs I've already bought, but it is still great to have them all in one place. Other's enter my CD collection for the first time. Finally "Reason to believe," "Suzanne," "Hard Traveling," "Euphoria," "Sing and turn Jubilee" and "The motorcycle song" can be played in the car.

If you are new to this music or this era, this is just a sampling. Some of these artists you will probably want in more depth. When they play "Cod'ine," I want to run home to also hear Buffy Sainte-Marie sing "Pineywood hills" and "Until it's time for me to go." But start here, it's a great introduction. It's hard for me to listen to "Four strong winds" without also hearing "Early morning rain," but if you've never heard Ian & Sylvia, this is one of the two best songs to start with.

If you grew up/old with this music too, how can you resist?

4 out of 5 stars Was it that long ago?.......2001-06-28

It is encouraging that this set may have been prompted by success of "The Best of Braodside" out on Folkways last year. In this case you get a pretty panoramic look at folk based music in the early 60s and people are certain to disagree on what is good or bad, should be in or should be out. The bottom line is that no matter what your point of view there is a lot of high quality music here and a good look at how folk music planted seeds for a lot of what is still happening in contemporary music. It was a great time, it was (and is) great music and one thing that can be agreed upon is that having Judy Henske's "High Flying Bird" back in print is a real important plus.

The music is as good today as it was in the 80's. In Seattle, I first heard them on KBCS and immediately purchased their first album and soon after, this album. "Neal Cassady" is especially poignant. Bruce Paskow moved to Seattle in the early 90's and I was lucky to not only meet him, but also played music with him. What a treat. When he died, it was too sudden and too early for such a gentle and brilliant man. Buy this album and buy it now. You will not be sorry.

He is just as great and beautiful a person as he is a great and beautiful musician. - George Harrison It is my great pleasure to speak about the distinguished musician, Vasant Rai. I have known him since he was a child studying with my father, the late Padmabhusan Allauddin Khan. His personal attributes and conscientious habits are a complement to his gifts as a musician. He has made a name for himself as a music educator, spreading the deep and rich classical musical traditions to all who come to him. I believe him to be an artist of extraordinary merit. - Ali Akbar Khan Vasant Rai is one of India's best sarodists. His abilities as a performer, teacher and composer enable him to make a unique contribution to Indian music. I have been associated with Vasantji for many years and have a great regard for his artistry. - Ravi Shankar Baba Allauddin Khan loved him like his son and taught him in a special way - that is why his approach is unique. He is very special in the manner he treats alap, in a meditative and peaceful flow, gradually unfolding the raga. - Shanta Prasad Vasant Rai has earned a world wide reputation of being one of the leading sarod players of India. In addition, he is a composer and a distinguished teacher of Indian classical mucsic. Being a disciple of the late Allauddin Khan, he brings to this country a highly respected tradition of Indian music. I have a great regard for his artistic abilities. - Zubin Mehta

For many years I have been learning Indian music. Of and on I have been lucky to learn at the Ali Akbar Khab school in the Bay area. I never got to hear Vasant Rai live, but after hearing several of his recordings, he's not only my favorite sarod player but my favorite musician. I always felt something lacking in Indian music performances until I heard Vasant.
The Darbari is amazing. I think there's a missprint with the second track which is Zilla Kafi which I belive is mishra Kafi
