This three-CD set collects many of Tom Lehrer's tunes, described by Time magazine as "brilliant and coruscating parodies," bringing back a bygone era when the "liberal consensus," as Lehrer calls them, knew who they were and could, therefore, laugh at both themselves and the well-defined enemy. Delivering clever, witty rhymes about topical subjects was Leher's strength. In "Wernher Von Braun" [the Nazi German scientist who later worked for NASA], Lerher sings: "I'll sing you a tale of Wernher Von Braun / A man whose allegiance is ruled by expedience / Once the rockets are up, who cares where they come down / 'That's not my department,' says Wernher Von Braun." Using a rollicking piano as accompaniment, Lehrer will remind some of Mark Russell, the current political satirist, but Lehrer's more pointed humor and grating, nasal voice make him a much tougher listen. His Jimmy Durante-like delivery, however, doesn't completely trump his truly quick mind and clever use of language. --Wally Shoup

5++ Stars.......2007-07-12
Now who doesn't love Tom Lehrer? I had all of his Reprise label vinyl albums, and knew the words to every song therein, when I was in high school. Of course I got beaten up a lot.
If you don't know who Tom Lehrer is, then you probably won't enjoy this record. Otherwise, unless you have pristine vinyl, and my records have been overplayed, this is a very good compendium.
Classic 60's social-political comedy.......2007-05-15
I listened to Tom Lehrer as a kid in the 60's, and memorized most of the songs, but to hear it again is very fun. Also, the songs still resonate - even though the names and issues have changed, the humor is still quite fresh - my wife, who's never heard this stuff, laughs out loud through the whole collection.
The piper's son to the first generation of cynics.......2007-05-02
Having been born in 1956 and raised in the early 60s, I was a bit too young to appreciate that other phenomenon of the age, Tom Lehrer. And given his unfortunate flash-in-the-pan career, by the time I was old enough to appreciate his brand of wit, he was long gone from the scene. But a beloved uncle (alas, a few critical years old than *moi*) often used Lehrer's lyrics in his cultural references. Learning I was a Catholic, he would real off the line, "Genuflect, genuflect, genuflect!" from "Vatican Rag." When my own interest in writing witty ditties came to the fore, he would refer to me as a "young Tom Lehrer," a puzzling reference that I assumed was a compliment. But like all obsessions of those around me, I was reluctant to explore his, lest I be disappointed.
But finally, I broke down and listened to this marvelous collection that spans the entirety of Lehrer's short career. And what a joy and revelation it was!
Musically, Lehrer is an accomplished pianist -- accomplished enough at any rate to give convincing renditions (off-kilter, as befits his genre) of tangos and Gilbert & Sullivan operettas. In terms of lyrics, he was quite, quite "clivver" as the Brits are wont to say. And his politics were quite to the left of center, thank you, rooted in a jaded view of humanity that must have seemed utterly bracing by late 50s standards. Assembled into a package, the pieces are explosively funny, topical and humane. When they aren't grotesque.
One or two of Lehrer's work still finds an audience. "The Elements" has been made into a flash movie that can be found on the internet. It is being shown by enthusiastic science teachers to spice up their classes. But most of Tom's pieces languish in silence, and on collections like these. Partly, this is due to a shift in musical tastes. Our generation's cultural touch points are hardly older than 50 years old and all rooted in rock and roll. To us, a reference to Muddy Waters or Elvis is a sign of cultural sophistication. G&S are as remote to those under 50 as the folk lutists of Upper Volta. That's a shame, because (among other things) it removes one facet of humor from Lehrer's music. "The Elements" (suing to the tune of "The Very Model of the Modern Major General") loses all cultural resonance to those unfamiliar with "The Pirates of Penzance." No longer a parody of a well-loved and well-worn old classic, it might well have been written by Lehrer himself, as far most people know.
Lehrer's politics, while focused on the concerns and personalities of 1960s (nuclear war, civil rights, Werner von Braun and Hubert Humphrey) are dusty but not completely dated. "Send in the Marines ("When someone makes a move of which we don't approve... send the Marines!") certainly resonate in the era of pre-emptive warfare. His send up of the Dixie of his day ("I wanna talk with Southern gentlemen, And put that white sheet on again") may indicate issues of a bygone era, but are still wickedly pointed. Yet Vietnam, hippies and contraception are still over Lehrer's horizon.
In spite of it all, Lehrer's music and cockeyed view of the world are quite refreshing and worth listening to 50 years on. His lampoons of college fight songs still bring a smile. His grotesqueries still manage to turn the stomach: "I Hold Your Hand in Mine" is worthy of Poe. But anyone who can write a song titled, "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park" -- in which are found the immortals lines, "When they see us coming, the birdies all try an' hide, But they still go for peanuts when coated with cyanide." - is worth at least one spin in the CD player.
I particularly enjoyed Lehrer's live recordings. To hear a staid 1950s audience howl at his wry asides and classic lines makes them come alive in a way that the studio recordings cannot. I am less interested in Lehrer's later work for the children's' show "The Electric Company," but they are part of his published corpus, and belong on this collection.
Every generation needs its Lehrer. Ours had the Smothers Brothers, and our children have Weird Al Yankovich. But Lehrer outdoes all in his breadth, brilliance and barely suppressed outrage. The Smothers Brothers were political (kind of) but musically one-dimensional ; Yankovich is very talented and very silly (and carefully apolitical); only Lehrer ultimately has some thing to say that moves beyond his music into the world of politics, ideas and human behavior. Great collection!
Enjoyable, but not a compilation and very repetitive.......2006-01-18
Discs 1 and 2 are the same songs - except disc 1 has 2 of the newer songs and that's the only difference. Just different live performances. Disc 3 had minimal repeating of songs on the first two. So you basically get a book with lyrics and some other interesting information (book is decent) and 2 CDs. Plus, I happen to have heard enough of Mr. Lehrer's interesting songs to realize this isn't all of them. I expected to enjoy the CDs anyway, but the box set turned out to be a big let down.
A song suitably inappropriate for any occasion..........2006-01-09
I first became acquainted with Tom Lehrer's musical repertoire in high school, via a tape that was a copy of a tape that was made by running a cassette recorder in the same room where an ancient and worn record was playing. The lyrical genius was clear, despite the decrepit quality of my recording.
I was delighted to find this CD set. Tom Lehrer songs are a mainstay of my nonexistent social life, being pulled out whenever the situation demands, or despairs. (For example, my darling brother sang "She's My Girl" to my sister in law at their wedding rehearsal dinner...)

Classic all the way.......2007-05-29
This is a classic collection of clever humor, full of nuggets my family has loved for years. Brooks works fast, and Reiner is a classic straight man. The best parts are where they're obviously cracking each other up. You can tell that the recording had a lot of editing, but it works. Considering some of the subject matter, they really did a great job of keeping it clean. Great stuff.
The 2000 year old man.......2005-10-06
I thought it was great. I had just seen the musical 'The Producers' while in London so decided to get the full set plus two others. Hilarious. I do get funny looks from car drivers when while waiting for the lights to change I am laughing my head off. This is my sense of humour. Thanks for your great service.
Impovised comedy at it's best.......2005-09-02
Before Mel Brooks (Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein) and Carl Reiner (The Man With Two Brains, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid) had established themselves as successful comedy directors they were writers for The Sid Caesar show. "The 2000 Year Old Man" was created during breaks in writers meetings where the two would entertain the others by imrovising a questions and answers scenario. Brooks played a man who has been alive for the past 2000 years and Reiner his interviewer. We get to hear the real stories about Jesus Christ, Joan of Arc, Robin Hood as well as tips on how to live longer (who better to tell you than a 2000 year old man!) and snapshots of coffee house life, movie directors, artists and lots more. Brooks is truly gifted at thinking on his feet despite Reiner occasionally trying to trip him up when he contradicts himself or backs himself into a comedic corner. The playfulness between them as they try to make each other laugh is a joy to the ears and it's great to hear a comedy duo that has aged so very well alongside so many of their dated peers. This four CD box set contains almost all of the recorded material available of this outstanding example of comedy improvisation and an accompanying booklet provides ample background information and interviews.
Classic Comedy Gems (for the most part)........2005-02-18
THE COMPLETE 2000 YEAR OLD MAN is a collection of 4 different comedy albums featuring the improvised works of Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks. The albums included with the set are: "2000 Years With Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks", "2000 And One Years With Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks", "Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks At the Cannes Film Festival", and "Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks: 2000 And Thirteen".
"2000 Years With Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks" is one of the greatest comedy albums of all time. It was pure genius in its day and the comic spark heard on the album remains just as funny today as it probably did when it was firs released.
"2000 And One Years With Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks" is my favorite album out of the set. The 2000-Year-Old Man makes a return appearance on the album, but I find the "Two Hour Old Baby" sketch and "Psychiatric Society" to be more hilarious. "Watch the eyes."
"Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks At The Cannes Film Festival" is my least favorite album in the bunch. Maybe its because the album was taped in Europe, I don't know, but the sketches here are just not as funny as the ones on the other albums.
"Carl Reiner & Mel Brooks: 2000 And Thirteen" brings back the 2000-Year-Old Man after nearly a decade of absence. The entire sketch is one long interview between the Reporter (Reiner) and the 2000-Year-Old-Man. I kind of wish there were some other sketches here, but there's enough hilarity to keep one interested.
The set includes a booklet that explains how the 2000-Year-Old Man came to be and the transcript of and interview between Saul Kahan and Reiner and Brooks. What's so fascinating about this whole collection is that none of it was rehearsed (except for parts of 2000 & 13 because Brooks was so scared to do the character again). The 2000-Year-Old Man was born out of improv. Reiner and Brooks make a great comic duo and have gone on to become some of the most powerful people in show business. This set of albums is a wonderful tribute to the character that made their careers.
Peps you up inside, keeps you going till supper..........2004-07-15
Mel Brooks is one of those things that makes life worth living, and this is him at his best. And that Carl Reiner ain't half bad, neither. A bargain at any price.

One can't help but feel both elated and sad when listening to this colossal overview of Richard Pryor's recorded work. Multiple sclerosis has silenced the greatest humorist of his generation, and that's tragic for Pryor. But it's also a heartbreaking loss for comedy, for, as these discs amply illustrate, the man who exploded the parameters of stage comedy in the '70s could have taken it in wild new directions. As it was, Pryor fleshed out Lenny Bruce's commitment to brutal honesty--and with a keener acting ability. This nine-CD set includes the comic's seven Warner Bros. LPs, plus a disc of previously unissued material and a rare 25-minute interview from 1983. Listening to the likes of 1974's That Nigger's Crazy and 1978's Live in Concert, it's obvious that while the man shaped comedy for decades to come, very few of those who've followed in his footsteps have anything near the talent, fearlessness, wisdom, or insight that Pryor possessed. Or the pain, for that matter. But as Pryor observed looking back at his peak years, "I was a drug-addicted, paranoid, frightened, lonely, sad, and frustrated comedian who had gotten too big for his britches." All those qualities come through loud and clear on these discs, but what he's left out is that, at the very same time, he was also very possibly the funniest man on the planet. --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
Simply put, the MOTHERLODE!.......2006-11-08
Pryorites and fans of comedy, folklore, storytelling, whatever you want to call it, simply put, this CD set is worth it.
Aside from the material on EVOLUTION/REVOLUTION (containing much of the material recorded for Laff records and elsewhere), this is the complete above-ground recordings of Richard Franklin Lennox Thomas Pryor, and then some!
From the first Pryor Lp in 1968, we get the embyonic genius of PRISON PLAY (aka Black Ben The Blacksmith), and early classic on the theme of interracial sex during slavery in a play at a prison overseen by a racist warden-with Pryor voicing all the characters! TV PANEL SHOW is along similar lines, as our hero does all the voices of the said subject.
SUPERN(egro) aside, the other routines here are not so hot, but you get a good glimpse of what was to come.
On to THAT N(egro)'s CRAZY where our man does polished versions of the routines he had been doing for the past few years in LIVE & SMOKIN, WATTSTAX, and CRAPS AFTER HOURS regarding sex, the police, racism, etc. This is where he became a "ghetto superstar" on the verge of exploding into mainstream America.
IS IT SOMETHING I SAID (1975) is his best unified work (to me). Not only do we get the classic OUR TEXT FOR TODAY (his classic take on the ministry), we also get chapter 1 of the MUDBONE saga, Pryor's ingenius take on the old folklore-spouting tale-spinning wise black men once found on every street corner in America.
BICENTENNIAL N(egro) is largely forgotten today, but it shouldn't be. This is Pryor's magnum opus on being Black in America during the nation's 200th birthday. Like Brian Wilson's SMILE and Marvin Gaye's WHAT'S GOING ON, it should be heard in its entirety to be effective.
On to the live albums LIVE IN CONCERT, LIVE ON THE SUNSET STRIP, and HERE AND NOW. The first is considered a classic. Has its moments, but he's done things that I've liked better. In the second, he recounces the N-word which gets a standing-o from me and delivers part 2 of the MUDBONE saga. The latter is a lesser work, but he puts some racist hecklers in check, gets into a really cool improvised conversation with a fiddler crab that a fan puts onstage.
The previously unreleased bits are largely a treasure-BLACK MESSIAH and HISTORY LESSON are masterpieces that mix the profane and profound, with verbal nuclear bombs and breathtaking social observations that make you laugh and gasp at the same time. PATTY HEARST is a skewered but interesting take on the famous kidnapping (one of the few occasional bits that it would help to be a history buff or a 70s person to dig), but MS is a very sad piece, probably one of his last recordings, as he ruminates on the effects this disease has on him. It's not likely that you'll want to hear that one more than once.
Overall, this is an amazing collection well worth the price that works in both ways as laugh material you can bring your buddies over for beer and pizza for (as I did with a number of these albums during my college years)and something you can really meditate and think over. This set is the ultimate legacy that Richard Pryor left to the world. RIP.
HILARIOUS.......2006-11-06
Complete works of Richard Pryor.....what more needs to be said. The man was a genius. I had been casually searching for a definitive compilation, and when I saw this I had to get it. I was not disappointed.
Sets the Standard for Modern Stand-Up Comedy.......2006-11-02
Any fan of stand-up comedy should be ashamed if they don't already own this amazing box set by Richard Pryor. This wonderful box set is crammed with features--CDs that trace his stand-up career from his early days straight through his mega-stardom at his peak, and then to his struggles with MS (which if you think is maudlin, wait until you hear how he savages it in only the way that Richard Pryor could). A descriptive book loaded with pictures and historical info on Richard that gives you an even deeper appreciation for the man and his works!
Summing up--Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Bernie Mac, etc. all are great comedians--but once you hear Pryor, you know that he set the standard for all to come!
Greatness but now for the iPod issues with it.......2006-04-18
iTunes won't recognize the track #'s. Every album is broken down in alphabetical order. Kinda sucks to listen to a live show in some crazy broken order. It's cool though if you just pop them on at home but if you are getting them for your iPod, be prepared.
Worth Its Weight in Gold..........2005-10-22
This boxed set contains every album released by Richard Pryor on the Warner Brothers record label. Only one of these is currently in print, "Is It Something I Said?", which is a shame. However, the fact that all his work is finally available in one place is a blessing. Richard Pryor was more than just a stand up comic. I don't doubt that he was (and is) the greatest stand up comedian of all time and the funniest man on the planet, but there was so much more to him than that. The first time I heard the track "God" off the rarities disc in this collection, I was blown away. In it, Richard describes God returning to Earth and one by one asking to see Martin Luther King Jr., Bobby Kennedy, Emmett Till, and finally his Son, only to find out that each one had been killed. The message he delivers at the end was needed then as much as now: LOVE IS ALL WE'VE GOT. The delivery was so amazing that it left the crowd hushed and obviously taken aback...this STILL isn't standard fare at any comedy club I've ever been to. And then as only Richard could, he apologizes for getting serious on everybody and offers to tell a dirty joke. This collection is full of the humanity, wit, and wisdom of Richard Pryor, and nothing has ever made me laugh so hard. Thank you Richard, for rubbing some sunshine on my face!

Students and teachers of history, enthusiasts of speechmaking, and folks needing something different to spice up those mix tapes with will enjoy this inspired four-disc tour of a century. It's a bit heavy on events a baby boomer is most likely to be interested in, but there's nothing wrong with knowing one's audience. For the most part, these recordings make 20th-century history appear to be happening right now. It might sound clichéd, but it really is a thrill to hear history in the making: Woodrow Wilson lying to the American Indians, Gloria Steinem addressing the National Organization for Women, the launch of sputnik, Dr. King delivering the "I Have a Dream" speech with intense clarity and emotion, Kennedy delivering his infamous address to the nation after being sworn in, the very first recording ever made on an Edison phonograph, Nixon resigning in shame, Hitler hatefully ranting about Germanic expansionism, Malcolm X powerfully speaking on black power, Babe Ruth saying good-bye to baseball, and Neil Armstrong uttering those famous words as he first steps onto the moon. --Mike McGonigal
Customer Reviews:
great speeches.......2007-03-25
It was what I needed for my high school public speaking class. The students are able to listen to great speeches. This way they had a reference to what makes an excellent speech.
A good collection of snippets........2005-06-21
I have to admit I bought this CD set mainly for Winston Churchills "Darkest Hour" speech, then thought "Hey I could get all sorts of great speeches at once. All the speeches are pretty impressive and some of them are a little creepy to hear. I mean to "HEAR" a President talk about the "Indians" when they were still living on the plains and in the mountains of America is just strange.
Some of the speeches are complete, however Churchills "Darkest Hour" was not one of them. Over all it was a great collection, but I wish that some of the speeches had not been trunkated. You might look for a CD that more accurately targets what you're looking for than trying to get a one stop shop with this set.
A Good Anthology of Forgotten Talent---.......2005-01-29
Particularly in this day of manufactured charisma on television, great public speaking has become a lost art--look at what we are using for President right now! This set will serve as a reminder of what we used to enjoy, particularly on the political scene. Certainly, a Franklin Roosevelt or a John Kennedy only comes once in a great moon and this is an opportunity to remember what we have had, and lost. I have had this set for several years and my only regret is that it isn't longer; I suppose for practicality's sake the entire texts of the speeches couldn't be included. Sound quality is remarkable, particularly for the old pre-electric recordings. It will probably be a surprise to many to actually hear the pre-FDR Presidents speak; again, they were not homogenized in the manner popular now.
This is a great 'starter' set for those who enjoy the spoken word for its own sake.
Great classroom resource.......2004-05-15
This is a must for any US History teacher. It's one thing to read a landmark speech, quite another to hear it as you read along. Studying history is much more interesting when students can "touch" "hear" "see" it. To have the actual voice putting inflection and feeling to the words makes it more memorable. Students today are so visual that merely listening to the speech is ineffective. (trust me, they will fall asleep.) Hand out a printed copy of the speech for them to read along with and highlight key points. It's also helpful when students are taking the AP US History exam to be able to quote speeches in their DBQs.
Important Set--Good for school use.......2003-01-27
As a teacher this set is invaluable. The recordings are well-chosen and nicely mastered. It's a good survey of 20th century audio recordings.

As a reader and performer of his own words, Kerouac wasn't as potent as his beat-generation pals. He lacked the greasy charisma of Allen Ginsberg or the razor squawk of William Burroughs. But what Kerouac did have was real joy, a certain innocence (despite his wild experiences), and an Everyman's charm. This last quality infects these historic recordings, making Kerouac's freethinking, beautiful words and images jump out of the past with as much potency as when he laid them down in the late 1950s. The Collection gathers Kerouac's three albums (which feature the author riffing alongside jazzmen Steve Allen, Zoot Sims, and Al Cohn) and a brace of bonus tracks. The performances are coupled with expansive liner notes, photos, and commentary. This set is required beat listening. --Michael Ruby

Had the Universe in his Hand........2007-07-01
I can't express enough how spell binding this experience was for me. I am a poet and listening to this was pure ecstasy. He speaks the language of the street with the rhythm of nature. He had his hands on the pulse of America and his ears were open to the invisible words of the ancients. Its not enough to explain it. You have to listen to it yourself. It is purely timeless and not a relic at all. It is still relevant for these times. You will waft on magic winds going deep into the heart of the cities and looking right into the souls of the people you meet along the way.
That being said this set is beautifully packaged. At first when it came in the mail I thought it was a vinyl and the seller had made a mistake. It was just a big package and as big as a vinyl. Inside there is a big book that gives lots of interesting information on Jack and the recordings inside. All recorded in 1959, they were controversial for the time. As you will hear there is sex and drug references in the poetry. "Poetry for the Beat Generation" has Jack spitting out his poetry like words of a God and Steve Allen adding piano to the background. The piano is a beautiful touch and adds a magical and melodic ripple to the poetry. Yes it is that Steve Allen who had his own TV show. The president of Dot records the label it was originally on, deemed it obscene and wanted only family oriented stuff. Rob Thiele one of the producers of the album got pissed and quit Dot because of that. Steve and Rob got the masters back and started their own company Hanover/signature and released it independently. Next they did "Blues and Haikus" which is different for the fact that Jack has sax backing his words this time. Al Cohn and Zoot Sims performing the honors, providing a jazzy backdrop to Jack's rapid fire Haikus and poems. "On the Beat Generation" is just Jack and his voice, this proves he doesn't need instruments for his poetry to have power. His voice is a instrument in it's self and it has a calming rhythm all its own. It has in it the working man's dreams, a god's conversation and a mind's wanderings. This was great and this set does perfect justice to the man and to the legend who inspired so many.
A Superb Voice Searches for and Finds Itself.......2006-12-19
A friend gave me this great CD collection and photo book for Christmas 2000 a month after we met. I listened to it sparingly then, but lately when I have trouble sleeping, I put one of its three great CDs on to soothe me to sleep and encounter my own personal Book of Dreams. There is Kerouac with Steve Allen riffing "October in the Railroad Earth" from "Lonesome Traveler", scatting Charlie Parker and Dave Brubeck, and most spectacular of all, a bonus track with Jack reading from "On the Road" and "Visions of Cody." I never have heard anything quite as haunting and poignant as Jack reading the final passage from "On The Road" ... "Dean Moriarty the father we never found," followed by applause. Having read almost all of Kerouac in the ten years of my foolish youth beginning at age 15, I grew disenchanted with him as the years dragged on. These audios are a new inspiration to us burn-outs; it will be quite a while before I listen to that final passage again, delivered with sober humbleness, and thought for new appraisal of the blazing artistry behind the man. The second CD is the Verve recording of "The Beat Generation" with finely honed rapid=fire haikus and other bebop poetry as well as "Visions of Neal" and bonus track "Is There A Beat Generation" at Brandeis in November 1959. The third CD has haikus, and very notably some of the very late posthumously released gargantuan "Some of (the) Dharma" and also "Conclusion of the Railroad Earth". There subsequently have been several other Kerouac CDs worth searching out; all prove his true genius and that he was not just another drunken bum. Hearing his voice, sober, clear, racing, and spooky, gives a whole new light to his written art, indelibly making clear that he was in fact a great true scat and jazz artist. Nobody should miss this one. It raised my opinion of him as an editor-sanitized pretender to one of the most important voices and writers of American literature ever.
Jack the Great.......2006-08-31
Jack Kerouac is not my favorite "Beat" writer...that goes to Lawrence Ferlinghetti...but Jack has a style that many have tried and have successfully failed to imitate. He's an original. He's one-of-a-kind. He's totally his own. I mean, we all are, but his originality goes deeper than his footprints...his is right at the core and whenever you come from the core of beingness, you stamp everything you touch with a kind of sacred beauty.
Mind you, it does not make everything flawless. But that's the beauty of life, there is perfection in imperfection. Perfection is not stingy. It is not greedy. Perfection flows through everything even though it may be channeled through some pretty imperfect channels.
"Jack Kerouac. Bum saint. Priest of the down 'n out. Reluctant messiah of the spoken/broken word that cries everytime someone crucifies it with form and arrangement and rules...what fools who do this for they miss the elegance, the beauty, the dance that comes from a mind fixed on trance being...seeing only ironic catholic statues weeping at the lost and the sleeping...."
There's my tribute to a man that I deeply cherish.
This collection is quite good. It really paints a great picture of the artist and gives you almost a voyeuristic view of a guy who really didn't want to be the "leader" of the "Beat Generation".
He's gone now and the literary world has somehow never been quite the same. Somehow writers nowadays think that all their writing has to be of a high gloss sheen...that it has to be perfect...that it has to be over-edited...get raw...seek awe...and you will glorify the "I" of the soul.
This is the greatest treat of the beatnik era........2005-09-09
From the first sound of the piano on "October in the Railroad Earth", you will know then that your money was well spent on this set. The book inside with all of the pictures and quotes from fellow beats such as Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs and many others along with 3 discs of Jack reading his poetry and prose, what could be better?
The first disc is Jack reading accompanied by Steve Allen on piano. His best pieces are found here, such as "October", "Charlie Parker", "I had a slouch hat too one time", and the famous reading of "On the Road" from The Steve Allen Show.
The second disc is when Jack is in the studio with Zoot Sims and Al Cohn, two brilliant sax players, and it has a loose feel with the restarts and the talking in the background before a take. The jewel on here is the readings from the then unpublished Book of Blues.
The last disc is simply Jack reading with no music, but the rhythm of his speech is easily heard and it is a joy to listen to.
this is the essential set for fans of Kerouac or anyone interested in the beat era. A must buy!
joy & sorrow.......2004-02-12
The first album in this box set, which contains 15 tracks of Kerouac reciting prose while Steve Allen plays beautiful jazz piano, is dazzling. There is something magical and heartbreaking about the record.. Listening to it makes you feel as if you're sitting next to Jack himself at a bar, drinking, as he tells you these stories and talks to you. For any fan of Kerouac's writing, this album is a must. Once you've heard this, you will read his books knowing the sweet voice that is talking emphatically.

Like the prog-rock movement that spawned them, the band name Yes was only supposed to be temporary. But Yes have long outlived prog, spanning five decades, some 14 members, and, at one point, essentially two separate outfits on opposite sides of the Atlantic. This five-disc box set chronicles the musical high points of one of the most successful, if unlikely, careers in all of rock. While contemporaries like ELP and King Crimson often distilled their jazz, classical, or avant-garde influences into potent, often jagged sonic shards, Yes thrived by infusing influences as diverse as Stravinsky, Lennon and McCartney, traditional jazz, the Fifth Dimension, and Paul Simon with their own restless, endlessly ambitious musicianship, then letting them simmer into musical landscapes often as vast as they were lyrically impenetrable. All the band's early staples are here ("Yours Is No Disgrace," "Starship Trooper," "I've Seen All Good People," "Roundabout") along with intact swatches of the epics Close to the Edge, Tales from Topographic Oceans and Relayer. But the later chapters are equally rewarding: the improbable 1980 replacement of departed Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman by the Buggles' Trevor Horn and Geoff Downs on Drama; the return of Anderson (with Horn and and new guitarist Trevor Rabin sharing producer's duties) for the surprising, megaplatinum success of 90125 and its chart-topping "Owner of a Lonely Heart"; rewarding, diverse '90s outings like Talk and The Ladder. It's a compelling musical vision that's almost utopian, sprinkled with a half-dozen previously unreleased tracks and the epic 1972 reworking of Paul Simon's "America." Chris Welch and Bill Martin's comprehensive and insightful notes are introduced by film director and longtime Yes fan Cameron Crowe, who reminisces about his early days writing about the band. -Jerry McCulley
Album Description

YES THERE ARE SOME MISSING SONGS. "IN A WORD YES (1969-)" IS A NICE WELL ROUNDED YES HISTORY .......................2007-07-09
There were other Yes box sets, but I like this "In a Word: Yes (1969 - ) the best. This box set is not for a Yes fanatic, but this box set is a nice introduction piece to a beginneer Yes fan. Pristinely remastered these cds sound great. A few unreleased tracks thrown in are good additions but a few more familiar Yes tracks such as "The Fish", "And You And I", would have been better. "In a Word: Yes (1969 - )" is a nice well rounded 5 cd box set with a nice expansive literature book. If the missing tracks bother the more serious Yes fan, then by all means try to get all the Yes remastered cds. For the beginner Yes fan "In a Word: Yes (1969 - )" is a nice introduction. Serious Yes fans will get this box set set as only a completist would. I got "In a Word: Yes (1969 - )" at a nice price, so it was worth it, I did'nt have to break the bank to buy it. "In a Word: Yes (1969 - )" has its negatives but it is worthwhile listen, to a rock group that helped define progressive rock. This box set covers the career of Yes very well despite some omitted songs.
IN A WORD: YES. IN TWO WORDS: NEARLY PERFECT !.......2007-03-18
It's hard to find anything I don't like about "In a Word: Yes (1969- )", the 5-disc box set from prog-rock veterans, Yes. It's beautifully packaged in a long box digi-book (with Roger Dean artwork) that includes a spine-bound book with over 90 pages of photos, facts, and two essays (or is it Yessays?) on the band's 30+ year history. All the songs have been digitally remastered to sound crisp, tight, and better than ever. Disc one starts with the surprisingly good and Yes sounding early recordings, and ends with five songs from the hugely popular "The Yes Album". Discs 2 and 3 feature music from the "classic years". This is the Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Steve Howe, Rick Wakeman, Bill Bruford/Alan White era. I would have liked to have seen the majestic "And You and I" from "Close to the Edge" included, but that it wasn't is forgivable, because these two discs still deliver the goods from the classic years, including the other two-thirds of "Close to the Edge", the biggies from "Fragile", their fantastic eleven-minute version of Simon and Garfunkel's "America", "The Revealing Science of God" from "Topographic Oceans", and "The Gates of Delirium" from "Relayer". Disc 4 includes selections from "Drama"(the Yes album without Jon Anderson on vocals), and the commercially sucessful "90125". The songs are in order and they all sound great. Disc 5 includes their most recent 1990's and 21st century recordings, and surprisingly is the disc I listen to most. Being a fan of the classic years, I had never heard any of these songs before. This stuff is great! It's as good as anything they have ever done. This disc, and the set, ends perfectly with the uplifting "In the Presence Of" from 2001's "Magnification". WOW! What a song that is! You won't be disappointed at all with "In a Word: Yes (1969- )". In fact, you'll be pleasantly surprised, especially if you haven't heard from Yes since "90125".
A Stuunning Boxed Set. Ideal For The Beginning Yes Fan........2007-01-07
Along with Pink Floyd, Yes defined the prog rock era of the late 1960s' and early 1970s', and along with Led Zeppelin, The Who, Jethro Tull and a select few others, they were one of the reigning classic rock bands of the era.
Unlike those aforementioned counterparts, Yes never quite had the impact that they had, despite being just as good as them. It's a shame, because in their prime, Yes were brilliant. And even once they fell from their artistic as well as commercial crest, they still produced solid music.
For proof of this, look no further than the 5 cd boxed set "In A Word: Yes (1969). Complete with many Yes classics, lesser known album tracks and a rarity or two, this is the ideal Yes compilation, regardless of price. The sound quality on every song is astonishing (for those who can't stand hearing "Roundabout" for the millionth time, just give it one more spin just to hear it sound better than ever), and the liner notes, complete with excellent essays by Cameron Crowe (who used two classic Yes tunes in my favorite movie, "Almost Famous"), Chris Welch and Bill Martin, are a dream come true for Yes fans.
This boxed set is definitely bar none the finest Yes collection on the market, and should appeal to both die hards and new fans. Should you buy this set? In a word: YES!
Just about all the Yes you could ever want ... and more!.......2006-02-14
DISCLAIMER: I DON'T OWN THE BOX SET BUT I OWN THE ALBUMS. I JUST LOOKED AT THE COLLECTION, and I gotta tell you, it's great. It has some of their excellent and forgotten gems like I've Seen All Good People and Starship Trooper, as well a lot of their songs from Fragile and BEYOND. I think they could've included all of the songs from Relayer, I think it was kind've silly that they didn't include all of the songs but whatever. It hass a good selection from Fragile like Roundabout(Predictable), South Side Of The Sky, Heart Of The Sunrise(My personal favorite from Fragile), and Long Distance Runaround. I kind of wish they included The Fish, which was an excellent instrumental from Fragile, let alone an excellent instrumental from Yes. It has Going For The One, Turn Of The Century, and Wonderous Stories to represent Going For The One, and that's also a great selection. It also has another great and underrated song on it that is one of my favorite Yes songs:Mind Drive. I love that song! All in all, this is an excellent way to get introduced to Yes. A terrible way to get introduced to Yes is buying thier "ultimate" collection. Stay clear of that, and get this if you want to hear Yes at their finest moments.
Yes Boxed Set "In A Word".......2005-08-04
What a wonderful compilation this is! Having been a Yes fan for nearly 35 years, it's nice to finally have a collection of songs that fairly chronicle their entire career. The rare and unreleased songs are a real treat for Yes fans. As usual, Rhino did an incredible remastering job on this. You've never heard your favorite Yes song sound this clear and dynamic. Also, the accompanying book is an incredible source of information about the band, much of it unknown to me, a rabid Yes fan. Highly recommended!

Customer Reviews:
A must have for lovers of French Orchestral music.......2006-04-29
Paul Paray is one of the best interpreters of French orchestral music whose stereo recordings are gathered together in this budget priced box, and offer terrific value to the consumer: great recordings/ performances AND sound, at a low price. First off, this item is highly recommended.
There may be some listeners who have favorite recordings of certain works in this set, such as the Saint Saens ORGAN Symphony, the Ravel TOMBEAU DE COUPERIN (Paray strikes me as rather too fast in the Forlane movement, and other parts), or CARMEN Suites. But it is great to have all this music in one set, and Paray is not inferior to anyone in this music. There are several rare works here, including Paray's own MASS. And there is Bizet's rarely heard LA PATRIE Overture, and Thomas Overtures to RAYMOND and MIGNON; Herold's ZAMPA; and Saint Saens' Bacchanale from SAMSON ET DALILA. The Detroit Symphony of the late 1950s/early 60s plays wonderfully, sounding as good as many more prestigious "big name" orchestras.
Of course other listeners have favorites and may not agree with my perception, but I enjoyed this set alot, and will continue to return to it in the future. That's saying alot for one who's a committed fan of Karl Bohm (1894-1981), Eugene Ormandy (1899-1985), Carl Schuricht (1880-1967) and Bruno Walter (1876-1962). The "French" sound and style Paray drew from the Detroit Symphony is much different from Bohm, Ormandy, Schuricht, or Walter, but is most enjoyable. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Paray's MLP French Gems Are Back!, .......2005-06-07
Those familiar with my reviews on Amazon know my great love for the Mercury Living Presence series. Equally great is my disgust that so many of these brilliant recordings have been deleted in the last few years! Thankfully, some of these legendary performances are resurfacing as SACD hybrids. However, they are unfortunately now being sold at full-price, despite a competing Living Stereo hybrid series on RCA/BMG being available at midline. In spite of the added expense, I hope this MLP reissue trend will continue, and maybe we'll even see a few items receiving their CD debut in this series.
These various performances of French Orchestral Music by the great Paul Paray have always been among my favorite MLP offerings. While three of these recordings continue to be available in their original CD incarnations -- the Ibert/Ravel, the Bizet Suites and Saint-Saens discs -- the remaining two discs of material have been out-of-print for some time. However, with this box set Paray's Lalo/Chausson and French Opera Highlights albums are now deservedly restored to the catalog. Even better is the fact that the four 5CD box sets being reissued have been reasonably priced, however they are not SACD Hybrids. This Paray set, and the ones of Dorati conducting Bartok and Tchaikovsky, and Hanson conducting a variety of American music, including his own compositions, have a total cost cheaper than the original single issue CDs! Once again, Mercury Living Presence lives!

Majestic hymns sung with British accents. A great combination! I haven't noticed any objectionable sounds on my copy.
hymns we sang in church.......2003-02-16
i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.
