Customer Reviews:
Great collection of Scott Joplin's piano rags.......2007-08-02
John Arpin delivers excellent performances of Joplin's rags. Not too much interpretation and not a flat presentation exhibited by piano rolls. Perfect for me. I believe Arpin has truly captured Joplin's essence.
The Complete Piano Music of Scott Joplin.......2007-06-08
John Arpin does a great job with these pieces. The songs carry a consistent sound and are played very close to as-written, which comes and goes with old ragtime pieces. The stamping on Stop-Time Rag doesn't have a consistent sound to it, can be a little distracting. Everything else is great, overall I think that it's a great buy, I'm very happy with it.
Another Performer Rewrites Joplin's Masterpieces.......2007-05-31
Once again, another performer feels the need to rewrite the music of the King of Ragtime. Scott Joplin spins in his grave each and every time this recording is played.
Again, to those who believe that concert music is meant to be rewritten by each and every performer I ask, is the same treatment also acceptable for Chopin's and Rachmaninoff's music? Would "Moonlight Sonata" sound better if played at twice the tempo and with a reprise of the first Adagio movement thrown in at the end? Obviously, the answer to these questions is a resounding NO!, so why does one of America's greatest composers get such disrespect?
Interpretation is an integral part of every performance. Adding one's own notes, phrases and chords where none should be is not. Randomly changing the structure of the piece is not. Playing a piece at twice the indicated tempo is not.
One the plus side, the depth of this collection is outstanding. Joplin's lesser known pieces like "Harmony Club Waltz" really shine. The recording is decent in quality, although a bit bassy in places.
While its been stated before, I feel its worth repeating: Buy Joshua Rifkin's performances of Joplin in order to hear how the Master intended his pieces to sound.
complete piano music of Scott Joplin on 4 CD's.......2007-02-14
Although all of the music is terrific it is rather a lot of a similar sound. I think I would have preferred 2 CD's of selected piano works of Scott Joplin. But I did get the music at a good price.
Ragtime Marvel.......2005-10-09
This collection of Scott Joplin's piano music is outstanding. As a lover of ragtime which was a prelude to jazz, I am thoroughly enjoying this collection. If you are not a lover of jazz, you may be a lover of ragtime. Jazz can sometimes be grating on the nerves, whereas ragtime lifts the spirit.

Amazon.com's Best of 2000
Talib Kweli is probably the only MC who could do justice to "For Women," Nina Simone's righteous, ragged battle cry, and he does so with his cover on Reflection Eternal. That cut illustrates this album's timeless quality, its personal poeticism, and its strength. Kweli's lyrical skills have only improved over time, approaching the stuff of legend. And producer Hi-Tek's supple grooves balance the wordcraft perfectly. --Lizz Mendez Berry
Amazon.com
Silencing any suggestions that he's any less capable than his more high-profile Black Star partner Mos Def, Talib Kweli, along with DJ Hi-Tek, crafts a masterful debut with Reflection Eternal. Like Mos, Kweli displays an impressive range of styles and sensibilities--whether popping party lyrics on "Move Something," reflecting on the mysteries of the heart for "Love," or musing on hip-hop's death and rebirth for "Good Mourning." In comparison to Mos Def's status as a new funk soul brother, Kweli's more of a b-boy bookworm--erudite and articulate, but he can also let fly with fire and spark on the mic anytime. DJ Hi-Tek finally gets to show off his full range of production ability with a blend of hot, aggressive tracks ("Blast") and relaxed groovers ("Memories"). As good a debut as you could ask for. --Oliver Wang

Talib Kweli and Hi Teck Makes You Want To "Move Somethin" (Rating: 10 out of 10- -5 stars).......2007-01-31
You can argue that Talib Kweli & DJ Hi Teck are the best emcee and DJ duo since Pete Rock & CL Smooth. When I first discovered them was when I was at home listening to the Music Choice Rap Channel, when the song "This Means You" popped on. That song alone wanted me to go and get that album, because of it's excellent wordplay by Kweli and Mos Def, with the production of Hi Teck.
There is not much I can say that already hasn't been said, seeing the average rating is at it's max. As I mentioned before, Kweli's rhymes are superior to hear. Being as young as I was at the time this dropped (around 14 or 15), trust me, I've never heard someone rhyme like that before. A perfect example where Kweli runs free on the mic is the song "Some Kind Of Wonderful". Another track that stood out was "The Blast" where even Hi Teck spits a verse that is also dope (the video had Talib doing two verses, but that is not on here. I'm kinda mad, since this is reissued).
Guest appearances are dope as well. My favorite would be Xzibit and Rah Digga popping up for the song "Down For The Count". Another would be the De La Soul contributed verses in "Soul Rebels". Production is also excellent by Hi Teck. Some of the song here are kind of laid back to listen to, but you can easily catch a vibe towards them.
"Reflection Eternal" (or "Train Of Thought" to some people) is one album that I can enjoy on many levels again and again. I remember listening to this album back in high school, and only a hand full of people knew who these guys were. If you ever get a chance, pick this us. The production on here is soothing and can clear your mind. If you are not familiar with Kweli, you might want to check out "Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star". I just found out Hi Teck was in a group called Mood back in '97 and will listen to that as well. Arguably one of the best that came out of Rawkus. Word up.

Reflection Eternal/Train of Thought: Best CD you've never heard of.......2006-12-20
One of the best albums I've ever heard, I'd give it 6 stars if Amazon let me. With the exception of Gangstarr (though I think Kweli is lyrically superior to Guru), I have never heard an MC and producer mesh so effortlessly on a consistent basis like Kweli and Hi-Tek. This is a CD I put in and listen to without touching a button.
Both Talib and Hi-Tek display impressive versatility in their respective trades, starting the CD with a party track like "Move Something," then moving to songs like "Memories Live," and "Love Language". You see Hi-Tek's jazz influence in songs like "Love Speakeasy," and "Good Mourning,". I also love the Nina Simone samples. The bonus track "For/Four Women," is a song which chronicles the trials and tribulations of Black Women since they arrived to this country centuries ago. Finally, on a personal note, "The Blast" is my favorite song in the whole wide world. Not saying you should care, but that tells you how I feel about this CD. I will listen to this when I'm 50 years old and I have no doubt about that.
That being said, it absolutely KILLS me that Kweli later comes out with LPs like "Quality" and "Beautiful Struggle," and gets very few to no tracks from Hi-Tek. It boggles my mind. When you look at the results of Reflection Eternal/Train of Thought and Blackstar, it becomes clear that the duo makes great and refreshingly intelligent music. In today's rap climate, that is clearly not the norm. I don't have an afro and I don't wear Cowrie shells or dashikis, but yes, it is great to hear rap music of some substance, celebrating black music and black people. I still treasure my copies of Reasonable Doubt, Illmatic and Life After Death, but this one's also in my special CD case...
The CD is a blast.......2006-10-09
I love the concious rap, the nature of it is so real. I can go by these tracks because of what they represent; the essence. The top 5 songs of the album:
1 The Blast
2 move somthin
3 Down for the Count
4 Good Mourning
5 Eternalists
Very impressive........2006-09-01
I'm always up for intelligent hip-hop, and "Reflection Eternal/Train Of thought" is filled to the brim with creative rhymes, head-bobbing beats, and powerful messages. For example, "Too Late" is a song that mourns hip-hop's downfall. "Nowadays rap artists coming half-hearted/Commercial like pop or underground like black markets/Where were you the day hip-hop died?" It's so true it's almost eerie. Plus, the beat is amazing.
Another note-worthy song is "Name of the Game". An amazing piano sample plays in the backround, and Talib's crazy MC skills are practically jaw-dropping:
"'The name of the game is..'
Persistance, dedication
Consistant motivation
Resistance to stagnation of information
Distribute it free to the entire population
No hesitation
Makin it public
No privitazation from corporations"
Genius!! Seriously, no true hip-hop collection is complete without this gem. "RE/TOT" is sure to be remembered for years to come.
Brought a tear to my eye!.......2006-05-31
This is an absolutely amazing album created by the reflection eternal. Another release that focuses on making classic songs that mean something positive to people. Songs that you can play twenty years from now and they are still dope and relevent to your life. Support emcees that have talent, not materialistic artists that make songs that will help you into a jail cell.

Product Description
Everything we see is a reflection of something: photons flying through the air as certain wavelenghs bounce off, while others are absorbed into every bit of material around us. Everything we say is a reflection of something: our background, our experiences, our thoughts, our feelings. Everything we do is a reflection of something: the sum total of our likes and dislikes, the culmination of our interests and pursuits, the manifestation of actions both conscious and hidden. Throughout his two-year journey into the artist's life brought on by his debut album "Grace Like Rain", Todd Agnew has taken ample opportunity to analyze the reasons and the motivations behind the things he sees, says, and does, and has channeled them into the dozen songs chronicling the Christian existence for his Advent Records sophomore release. Everything you'll hear is a Reflection of Something. Experiencing Reflection of Something compels you to move. Moving you to sing praises, weep in worship, or fall at the feet of Jesus. Todd applies his signature gritty and passionate vocal delivery to penetrating, emotional songs, leading the listener to a place of thoughtful introspection.
Customer Reviews:
"Reflection of Something" Review.......2007-05-13
I find Todd to be somewhat 'different.' However the more I listen to favorite songs the more I like his deep and 'gravelly' voice. I find his messages are more intense than many as well as meaningful.
Powerful Lyrics, Good Sound.......2007-03-11
Todd Agnew combines powerful, Scriptural, thought provoking lyrics with a bluesy sound and his unique voice. The combination is a very good album.
The only song on here that I have heard much on the radio is, 'My Jesus'. Although it is very good, it is not the only one. Some other tracks that are very powerful include the following: Mercy In Me, Where Were You, and In The Middle of Me.
Lyrically, this album is rarely matched. The sound is also very good. It is worth checking out.
Great Listen!.......2007-01-25
I'm a big Todd Agnew fan already. This CD is incredible! My favorite is "Where Were You?", a great answer to the humanistic rumblings of the world regarding poverty, death, war, destruction, etc. Todd has great insight, and such a soulful voice. No one else could do these songs justice. I was bragging about his first CD to my minister, but that was before I heard this one.
Lyrics that are honest and though-provoking........2006-06-07
Reflections of Something is just that...songs that take a look at many aspects of life...struggles with self-worth and finding a place in this world, trying to comprehend mercy and grace, realization that God is always there, even when we turn away.
Two songs on this CD really hit home with me. "Unchanging One" which talks about God's faithfulness even when we stumble and fall, sometimes in major ways.
The second song is "My Jesus". This song portrays who Jesus really is, not the one frequently passed off as the original in today's Christian culture. Hard-hitting in a gentle way, it's a wakeup call to those who claim to be followers of the Jesus Way.
But even though "My Jesus" is listed as the final song on the CD, don't turn it off just yet. There's a surprise at the very end, one that isn't listed in the song list. A remake of the old hymn "It Is Well" is a gem in hiding. This isn't the slow as molasses hymn I grew up with. It's much, much better. Same words, same message, but in a more modern, richer package.
Listen to this fan.......2006-04-08
and you will not be disappointed. Both of Todd Agnew's CDs are full of really good stuff, to put it bluntly. I expect to wear both of my CDs out in the near future!

Album Description
"...In an agitated stream, it is difficult to see a reflection. In a calm lake, that reflection is clear...."
Liquid Mind VII: Reflection, the seventh in Liquid Mind 's unique ultra-slow relaxation albums, ebbs and flows with a peaceful and introspective elegance. Science has proven that our minds and bodies harmonize with the tempo of our surroundings, and that slow music may cause a general relaxation of muscle tension. This beautiful album is "musical healthcare" at its best: ideal for sleeping, meditation, anxiety and anger management, as a background to Reiki, Yoga, massage, and to enhance all healing activities. Parents and teachers find it useful to quiet hyperactive kids, veterinarians use the music to help animals recovering from surgery, mothers give birth to it, students study to it, artists paint and writers write to the musical backdrop of Liquid Mind. This subtle music has a way of opening our hearts and minds to our true selves.

Meditative Masterpiece!.......2007-06-09
Looking for great meditation music? Listen to Liquid Mind's assortment of musical meditation arrangements! I purchased Liquid Mind III years ago it's music became almost sacred to myself and other family members and friends. So, I purchased the entire series! Need I say more?!!!!
The music has a great "trademark" sound but each CD has it's own uniqueness. I found it was great anytime you need "background" music. I loved each and every CD by Liquid Mind and will treasure the music always. Thanks to Chuck Wild and all involved in the production of Liquid Mind!
ok massage music.......2007-03-31
It's a little slow and boring for my taste, but it provides for constant airy sound. Typical spa music.
JUST MELT.......2007-02-06
When the day is through and nothing is left but the thoughts of the day that you wish would go away put on this music. Close your eyes, your mind, and melt away on the soft liquid sounds of this calming energy. IT is so soothing I can forget my noise filled mind and find a cloud to stretch out onto and just be......nothing
Exactly what I was looking for.......2007-01-17
I always tried to relax by listening to classical music. Some classical is relaxing, but it can change tempo and volume often which I find distracting. This is much more calming then anything I've ever found. We have two of these cd's -- Reflection and Unity. I use it in the kitchen, or while I'm reading at bedtime. My 10-year-old listens to one at bedtime to help him calm down. I really love these cd's.
A perfect CD for Massage.......2006-04-14
As a massage therapist, it is really tough to find appropriate music for a session. This CD hits the mark. No singing, chanting, or other distracting bird calls. Just pure melodious tunes that flow from one song to the other. My clients love this CD and you will too.

Quintessential..........2007-04-04
If you haven't gotten this album or if you're unsure if you'll like it, don't be! Kweli is a quintessential part of hip hop and if you're a hip hop head and you don't get this now you'll be paying double for it later. Madlib's beats and kweli's impeccable delivery and punchlines are a force to be recognized. Madlib is a producer I think people have been overlooking for a while, but he made a serious statement on this cd. He's the best kind of producer, the one that has a unique style and can tailor that style to his artist. So if you buy this you should definately purchase his other cds. Add to that the fact that Kweli is one of those great rappers that only gets better with time and buying this cd becomes an investment. As Kweli said, "the era of the bullsh^t is over."
4.5, only because of the length, 5 for overall rating.......2007-03-31
This colab with madlib was a great to listen too. I was lucky enough to get it at the cheaper price. I feel that Ta and Lib are an interesting match and I think they should do future projects. The production on this album is unique and innovative, the lyrics powerful. My only problem with this is that it is meant to be a treat to their fans and was made very short in length. To me the songs are not "rushed"... (it is an "EP" release, with only 9 tracks.)
Also I wish Lib would have done alittle MC'ing with Ta. I know some say this is not his strong area, but I disagree, Lib mc'ing would have added alittle flair to this colab, Ta could have been maybe Quas's little cousin???!!!. This will be a rare one so get it.
Not Bad...for a FREE release.......2007-03-12
This album was released on New Years Eve of 2007, available only as an internet-only download to visitors of the Stone's Throw record label website. It contains 9 tracks:
1. The Show
2. Funny Money
3. Time Is Right
4. Engine Runnin' (featuring Consequence)
5. Over the Counter
6. The Function (featuring Strong Arm Steady)
7. Happy Home (featuring Candice Anderson)
8. Soul Music (featuring Res)
9. What Can I Do
I would say about half of these tracks hit their mark, while the other half feels a bit rushed or, and I hate to say this, under-produced.
What you will get: a few nice new rhymes from Kweli, beats from Madlib
What you don't get: a true "collaboration" that feels like both artists are on the same page. I love both artists individually, but there's a little something off here.
The standouts are "The Show" "Time is Right" "Engine Running" and "What Can I Do?"
Are four tracks worth $20? Its up to you.

Titled Reflection, this CD program examines one of classical music's most fascinating triangles: the love between Robert Schumann and his wife, Clara, and their friend Johannes Brahms, who loved them both. There is music by all three composers here, and the almost 80-minute program is varied and fascinating. Robert's popular, stunning A minor Piano Concerto is played by Grimaud with romantic abandon but little sentiment; when it is showy, it comes from the music itself and is not an affectation. The first movement is filled with poetic vs. dramatic contrasts; there is a subtle but noble transition on piano and winds from the gently presented second movement to the springy, dramatically energetic third. Esa-Pekka Salonen is the remarkable conductor of the superb Staatskapelle Dresden. Grimaud then joins with mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter in three songs by Clara. Two, with texts by Rückert, are poems to connubial love and the third, "Am Strande," was composed as a gift for Robert's 40th birthday. Brahms's Sonata for Cello and Piano No. 1 in E minor is given a strong but lyrical and well-balanced reading by Grimaud and cellist Truls Mørk; both play with passion. Brahms's two Rhapsodies for piano complete the program; Grimaud gathers the darkness of the second and gives a fervent performance. What a beautiful CD! --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
A great Schumann, a very good Brahms, good value.......2007-05-30
If you are looking for a Schumann piano concerto that is not coupled with the Grieg, you've come to the right place. At first, this coupling may seem strange, but there is a compelling logic to it. Brahms was an intimate friend of the Schumanns (perhaps in more ways than one although there is no clear evidence to support this view). Clara Schumann was a fine composer in her own right, but has been overshadowed by her more famous husband (both she and Fanny Mendelssohn). Helene Grimaud proves herself to be up to the task here and she delivers a sparkling concerto performance as does the Dresden Staatskapelle orchestra (the same orchestra that premiered the work with Clara as the soloist). Five stars for her performance, five stars for the orchesta and five stars for the sound. Truls Mork recorded the Brahms E minor cello sonata previously, but coupled with the F major which is the usual coupling. The sonata was written in Brahms' youth and is full of energy, passion and stunningly beautiful melodies. Mork does not disappoint and Helene Grimaud is more than a competent partner. Her piano sings without overpowering the cello. A lovely performance, although I must confess that I am slightly more partial to Starker/Buchbinder. Very good recorded sound in the sonata. The two lieder are not familiar to me so I have no point of reference and can only say that Anne Sofie von Otter sings like an angel. (German and English texts are provided for the lieder.) The two piano rhapsodies are also unknown to me. They make a nice filler for this very fine disk but the piano gets a little clangy in the rhapsodies and I wish the engineering had been better. But no one will be buying this CD for the filler. Notes in English only. All in all, a very musical and well thought out and executed program.
Again, Some Interesting Programme from Ms. Grimaud.......2007-02-06
After the rather controversial latest release of Chopin and Rachmaninoff's Sonatas, Grimaud is back on the scene. This time with the music of the Schumanns and Brahms, the latter being the composer this pianist is often associated with. The result is an eclectic, engaging program - even though it may not be perfect. The programme is also designed to show listeners the different sides of Grimaud: as a soloist in a concerto, an accompanist, and a solo performer.
A famous work of the standard repertoire, Robert Schumann's "Concerto in A minor for Piano and Orchestra" is performed with unassuming clarity, pleasant balance, and most notably impeccable articulation. Grimaud, known for her adherrence to the original score and 'composer's intention' again gives a very sensitive rendition of this work. Although personally I think she lacks contrasts, color, and warmth in timbre, this rendition is logical and structurally well-built. Salonen provides great accompaniment to Grimaud, very sensitive although the relationship between piano-orchestra may not be developed to the point of say, Argerich-Rostropovich. When compared to Argerich's playing, Grimaud falls heavily on the conservative side. Her tempi are definitely slower than Argerich's both in the first and third movt. The downfall is that she does not utilize this moderate tempi to allow more interpretations and variation of tone color which Argerich does despite her quick tempi. Hers is then probably closer to that of Katchen's or Zimerman's - elegant, well-articulated, but unfortunately somewhat lacking fire and fluidity. Most praiseworthy in this recording is Grimaud's clean touch and articulation. There is a sense of control and confidence in every passages of this concerto, probably facilitated by her moderate tempi. Thanks to the great piano sound and recording, it is not hard to listen to all the voices she is trying to emphasize, an evidence of perfect articulation. You can easily hear all the notes in her quintuplet in the first minute of the piece without sounding 'busy' or dirty.
Grimaud's collaboration with von Otter on Clara Schumann's lieder are also praiseworthy. While some says Grimaud often overpowers von Otter, I personally don't think she does. Although I am not familiar with these lieder, they really are great songs. The piano accompaniment is utilized to its greatest potential and the melody is haunting. Both soloist and accompanist provide a passionate rendition. It is obvious that Grimaud chose a great order for these lieder, as the three forms a sonata-like combination - the outer lieder (Er is gekommen and Am Strande) being fiery while 'Warum' is serene and beautiful. The fact that the next work is Brahms' cello sonata gives a psychological effect that the album actually has three sonatas. However, it is in the Brahms' cello sonatas that Grimaud actually overpowers Mork in a quite obtruding manner. Grimaud the soloist seems to step over Grimaud the accompanist.
The Rhapsodies serve as the 'encores' but are actually my favorite pieces in the album. In both these Rhapsodies, Grimaud not only provides convincing, confident, and unique interpretation but also fire and passion which makes up for the cool Schumann Concerto. Although she maintains the same sense of control and balance, the first Rhapsody has great contrasts and tone color despite rather quick tempo. The second Rhapsody is relatively heavy and took on slow tempo but accurately conveys the 'agitato'. Very well done.
The booklet is somewhat rather disappointing despite the great photography works. While in 'Credo' and the Chopin-Rachmaninoff sonata album she offers great written insights and ideas, in 'Reflection', there is only a foreword (which I think is written by her, but not written so I'm sure) and a historical background of the composer. Pretty dull, considering you can find those stories in any music history books or Wikipedia even! These weaknesses are somewhat, although not completely, compensated by the beautiful photographs of Grimaud, especially when she wears white and the one in which she is playing the piano. Gorgeous!
All in all, definitely give this album a try. Besides the fact that it has an awesome rendition of Brahms' Rhapsodies, Clara Schumann's lieder, and Robert Schumann's concerto, it is also very generous (80 min) and has awesome pictures of Grimaud inside the booklet. It may not be your favorite rendition of the works, but it still has an addictive quality.
Understanding the Intricacies of the Schumann/Brahms Love Triangle.......2006-12-26
Whispers, poems, and pages have been floating around for years about the strangely romantic triangle that bound the composers Robert Schumann, Clara Wieck Schumann and Johannes Brahms - secrets that will be forever the purview of intuitive writers and philosophers and historians. This very intelligent and tender CD REFLECTION is one way of examining the closeness of these three remarkable and very human artists. And it is a complete success, musically and thoughtfully.
Incorporating some the finest artists available today this CD is the brainchild of the remarkable Hélène Grimaud, a pianist who not only is a remarkably fine artist but who also looks for more in her musical thoughts than merely the notes on the score. She offers here a collaboration with Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting the Dresden Staatskapelle in an elegant and wistful performance of Robert Schumann's Piano Concerto in A minor, rich in subtleties and deeply felt melodic line.
Grimaud then partners with Anne Sofie von Otter in three songs by Clara Schumann: 'Er is gekommen in Sturm und Regen', 'Warum willst du and're fragen?', and 'Am Strande' - songs that give both artists the opportunity to remind us how gifted Clara was with song writing.
The third member of this remembered and honored triad is Johannes Brahms and his 'Sonata for Cello and Piano No. 1 in E minor' is performed with passion and grand scale by Grimaud and the gifted cellist Truls Mørk. Grimaud then closes the recital with Brahms' 'Rhapsodies for Piano Nos. 1 (B minor) and 2 (G minor)', sublime works that not only serve as a fitting closure to this thoughtful program but that also leave us with the desire for more Brahms from Hélène Grimaud! This is a very special recording, well produced technically, and one with which we are left with the feeling that both the Schumanns and Brahms would have warmly applauded. Highly recommended as one of the important issues of the year. Grady Harp, December 06
Reflection.......2006-12-23
When reflection makes Clara alive I applaud Helene for her spirits to bring to us such a wonderful design. This CD is carefully crafted to engage the listener to the colors of the sonatas and what they express.
After listening to this CD I had a remarkable experience. I was approaching a friend at the hallway. The shadows from the overhead lights created a magical experience. I was seeing Helene just like she appears on the CD cover. As I was getting closer and closer I realized Helene was really my mentor.
This was so strange and also so remarkable I am making a note in my poetry log.
Heart and Head.......2006-11-15
Lovely and committed playing by Grimaud and all concerned combined with an inspired selection. I'm usually not a fan of "concept" albums but this recording makes its musical and intellectual point deftly and with great musicality. Highly recommended.

Available at retailers for about $18.......2006-12-21
Excellent collection - but there are re-sellers listed here that are selling this for as much $50 or $60. Yikes, most major retailers are selling this complete set for $18 - so beware.
A classic compilation.......2006-10-07
This collection is one of my most treasured possessions. (My father gave me the original 5-album set in the 70's when it was originally released on vinyl.)
This is the definitive collection of Scott Joplin's work. Richard Zimmerman provides wonderful performances that accurately reflect Joplin's intentions. (As evidence beyond my personal opinion, I submit the recent releases of digital recordings made from Joplin's piano rolls.)
A few points to consider regarding negative comments you may encounter in other reviews:
* This is a digital recording from an analog master. Lack of quality in the recording does not imply a lackluster performance.
* This is a complete collection. Some similarity is due to Joplin re-exploring melodic themes. But some is due to the fact that these are "rags". One might as well complain that all 50's doo-wop (or all 70's disco) sounds the same.
* Many pieces of the period exhibit formal musical structures, such as the marches of John Phillips Sousa. (Both Sousa and Joplin performed at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis.) Actually, Joplin is responsible for extending the formal boundaries of ragtime to concert waltzes (Bethena) and opera (A Guest of Honor, Treemonisha)
* This is probably one of the few collections which will include selections from "Treemonisha". It is my understanding that after the initial release, one of Joplin's descendants made a copyright claim that was upheld in court. (I presume the issue was that Joplin had to finance "Treemonisha" himself, and therefore the customary performance clearances did not cover those selections.)
For ragtime students and enthusiasts, this is a "must-have" collection at a very affordable price.
A dis-service to Joplin.......2006-02-01
Sadly, the only virtue this set possesses is completeness.
The pianist does not play Joplin's pieces "as written", the piano is of poor quality, and not properly in tune.
This is emphatically NOT the set to buy. A far better set, beautifully annotated and well played on a good concert grand piano, is the complete works played by Guido Nielsen on the Basta Label.
This set is a dis-service to Joplin and his music. He deserves better, and gets it elsewhere.
Unique .......2004-10-19
I have several cd sets of Joplin's music: Rifkin, Arpo, Nielsen, and Zimmerman. All have their excellent qualities. What sets Zimmerman's set apart is the inclusion of excerpts from Joplin's opera, Treemonisha---especially "A Real Slow Drag." Why the other sets do not include excerpts from Treemonisha, I don't know---because they are some of his most beautiful and joyful pieces of music. Of course, you can hear the orchestrated version of Treemonisha in the Houston Grand Opera recording, and it is spectacular. But Zimmerman's piano version, especially of "A Real Slow Drag," is not to be missed.
Great set.......2001-10-16
I guess this will be a rather one sided review. I have been a fan of Scott Joplin since I first learned to play a piano.
I was shocked to see that one reviewer thought it all sounded the same. How silly. All of Frank Sinatra's music sounds like Frank Sinatra. All of Led Zeppelin sounds like Led Zeppelin. So, if the songs were drastically different, I would question if the same author composed them. As it is, though, each song on this set is fantastic!!
I don't know that I have heard of Richard Zimmerman, and I was a little leary as to what I would be getting, I certainly was impressed. Without a doubt the best renditions of "Weeping Willow" and "Bethena" I have heard, and at least a dozen songs I didn't know Joplin wrote.
Without a doubt, this album is fantastic. A very good price, as well.

I loved the music on this cd. Thank you so much. My brother and I listen to it all the time.
Disney Always Rocks.......2005-09-29
Yeah looks like it's a great get, if you haven't already got every CD by disney. Didn't know the song You'll be In my Hear was a Tarzan track. Must be a spin off to You'll be in My Heart. Its all good.
Awesome collection!.......2003-10-19
I have to say, that with a 5 year old who is obsessed with the movies that these songs go with, it has made the perfect gift! She spends hours listening to this CD while doing more productive activities than sitting in front of a TV watching the movie. The songs are special to her because of the movies, and she actually does her schoolwork well with these fun songs playing. As a music lover and a Disney lover, we both agree at 5 and 30 that this is a hit.
For adult listeners, the Disney songs sung by "real" singers.......2003-07-22
Trivia Challenge: Included in the 16 tracks on "Disney's Superstar Hits" is the only song from a Disney film to hit #1 on the Billboard Pop Charts. See if you can remember which one it is before I give the answer away at the end. No peaking ahead.
The songs collected on "Disney's Superstar Hits" are mostly from the 1990s; there is "Once Upon a Time in New York City" from way back in 1988 from "Oliver and Company" and a few songs from the 21st century. But the only golden oldie is "Put It Together (Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo)," which comes from "Cinderella II" and not the original. The obvious frame of reference would be to see this collection as representing the Disney Renaissance ushered in by the Alan Menken/Howrad Ashman era, which makes it strange that nothing from "Little Mermaid" is included. But the common denominator to this collection is that the songs are not sung by the characters from these films, or, more properly, the people who did the voices for the characters. So instead of Angela Landsbury doing "Beauty and the Beast" it is Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson.
There are several songs from the less than stellar direct to video Disney sequels, such as "The Hunchback of Notre Dame II," "The Lion King II: Return to Pride Rock," "and "Cinderella II," which would be a minor complaint. But Tina Turner sings one of the songs, so it is hard to complain. In fact, the strength of this collection is indeed the superstar singers. Most of them are blasts from the past such as Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Phil Collins, Sting, Huey Lewis, and Randy Newsman, but there is also new blood such as Christina Aguilera, Sarah McLachlan, Vanessa Williams, and even Jennifer Love Hewitt. Peabo Bryson comes out ahead, with the aforementioned "Beauty and the Beast" and another duet, "A Whole New World" with Regina Belle.
This disc is perfect for grown ups, who like the "real" singers singing the best songs from the Disney movies their kids have been dragging them to for the past decade. Vanessa William's "Colors of the Wind" is my personal favorite, although it is hard not to recall the fantastic opening of "The Lion King" when you hear Elton John do "Circle of Life." On the fun side of the ledger I like Randy Newman and Lyle Lovett working their collective ways through "You've Got a Friend in Me" a bit more than Jimmy Cliff and Lebo M's "Hakuna Matata."
Trivia Answer: "A Whole New World" was #1 on the Billboard Pop Chart for one week starting on March 6, 1993. It is the song that replaced Whitney Houston's cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" after 14 weeks on top.
Good CD.......2002-12-29
This is a great CD, but I was kind of disappointed that there weren't more tracks on it. Other than that, you and your kids will be singing along in the car for sure.
