Editorial Reviews
From the Label
Tradition label founder and ethnomusicologist Diane Hamilton made a field recording trip to Virginia and North Carolina in the summer of 1956, and her findings are gathered here. Featured musicians include Etta Baker (one of Taj Mahal's earliest musical mentors), Richard Chase, Hobart Smith, and Boone Reid. An album of truly great music, it inspired the Library of Congress to make subsequent recordings of many of these artists.

5 out of 5 stars Love this lady........2007-01-21

I am so sad that this great lady and guitarist has passed. What a wonderful story and an amazing selfless life she led. Her fingerpicking is amazing. I can listen to her all day long. It just gets better with familiarity. She had so much talent and her music reflects her personality and even humor. She inspired me to take up the guitar. I'll never be equal to her, but I'll try. Thanks Etta. You will be missed.

    4 out of 5 stars Where's Erik?.......2000-07-15

If you are a dyed-in-the-wool Erik Darling fan, you won't find much of him on this CD. The last 10 songs on the CD [from "Hard and it's Hard" to "What Will We Do With The Baby-O"] come from a much earlier record entitled "Banjo Music of the Southern Appalachians" on which the songs are sung by "the Kissoy Sisters and Robin Roberts" with Erik Darling accompanying them on the banjo. None of them is remarkable. It's a nice collection of Appalachian music, but if you are looking for Erik ,try elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Best compendium of souther Appalachian music I've heard........1998-08-22

Excellent, but don't buy it for Eric Darling material...if it's there, it can't readily be identified.
