Album Description
It all began on 90-Mile Beach where Jonathan and Heather developed a common vision, to form the greatest bubblegum pop'n'roll band ever and follow the summer till the end of time. The Brunettes consist of members Jonathan Bree (song writer, guitar, vocals), Heather Mansfield (vocals, keyboards, glockenspiel, clarinet, harmonica, whistle), Kari Hammond (drums, percussion), Mike Hall (Bass guitar and Double Bass, backing vocals), and this album 'Holding Hands, Feeding Ducks' is a sugary sweet pop masterpiece, just rough enough in the right places to seduce the indie-pop listener. EMI. 2005.

A Great Find.......2006-06-09
I saw The Brunettes open for The Shins last year. It turns out the Shins were rather disappointing live, but it was entirely worth going to have been introduced to this group. I fell in love with their music, and bought both of their albums and both of their EPs that night. Of their four releases, this is definitely the strongest. Musically, it's fascinating, doing bubblegum pop in bizarre and captivating new ways. And the lyrics are charming - they sing about love with a refreshingly naive honesty - they're saying the things that we all would like to say, if we weren't so self-conscious.
Happy Fun Fresh.......2005-06-17
I first saw this band live opening for Rilo Kiley recently and they matched well together. The best way to describe their music is that they have kind of a mid-sixties surf pop sound about them with nice harmonies and a good sense of humour. This particular album highlights that perfectly. The group tosses out a wide variety of sound meshing with simple peppy lyrics with the energy of the Ramones. You put this on at a party and people will be dancing all over your living room and kitchen and kind of humming along thinking it feels familiar.
To give you an idea of their own tastes one of the guitar player's (Jonathan) favorite songs is "Crimson and Clover". You immediately get what their influences are. You think of "Pet Sounds", maybe Phil Spector (pre Wall of Sound) and a bit of David Bowie.
Yet they make it all their own.
Definitely something to listen to on a bright sunny day.
Brunettes.......2005-06-13
A great album full of creativity, and orginality. The beautiful sounds of the album will amaze you. Highlights of the album include: Talk to Jesus, Summer Love, Holding Hands and Feeding Ducks, Dancefloor, and End of the Runway I got a chance to see them perform live, as openers for Rilo Kiley. They are even better live. This is a great album you should not pass up.

nice enough.......2007-08-02
relaxing stuff, averagely executed. listened to it twice, then off to a dusty shelf it went.
A Darkened homage.......2004-12-31
On first listening to this album, I was apprehensive. I am a fan of the Darkness, and believe them to be a ground breaking band. Back around the late 70's, music took a tangent. It went off into a strange land where fully grown adults wore clothes too big for them, and listened endlessly to pre-fabricated music. The Darkness are taking up from where the likes of Queen and AC/DC left off.
I was worried that the combination of the emotional strings could not quite leash the power and soul of The Darkness; that classic players could not translate thier power. On hearing the album, I realised something: Much alike permission to land, this too is ground breaking. It is the soft carresing hand of classical music reaching out to the arms of today. A bridge between the expert fingers of the voilin to the guitar. In more plainer terms, I was wrong.
The take on it is absolutely fantastic. Not only does it ensoul permission to land with the sensual sounds of the strings, but also manages to keep with the fun and excitement that The Darkness have brought to modern day music. An absolute must for any Darkness fan, or anyone wanting some real fun put back into thier ears. I myself can turn on any one of these pieces and float away into another level of adoration for music. This album truly shows the abilities music has to move you, it shows how music can be enjoyed and shows a true talent I have not seen for a very, very long time.

Dinah glows in spite of her obtuse record label.......2007-05-10
RCA never had the slighest clue what to do with Dinah Shore when it came to albums. It was when she moved on to Capitol that she recorded a brilliantly conceived series of theme albums working with the best musicians in the business (Red Norvo, Andre Previn for starters). "Holding Hands at Midnight" is typical RCA fare--bland concept, bland cover bland bland bland but Dinah's warmth, honesty and musicianship still come through. It's a lovely album because of her and perfect for rainy nights at home. You'll love it.

Customer Reviews:
RICHARD'S BEST YET..........2005-09-16
...and that's saying a lot, because I happen to feel that everything Richard Berman has written and recorded is first-rate material. Now and then even a consistently fine songwriter releases an especially shining work...and that's what's happened here.
The songs contained on this release are from the heart and soul of the writer...and they are guaranteed to touch the heart and soul of the listener. Richard writes with what I would call a 'studied sentimentality', as opposed to the knee-jerk variety. The feelings that he so eloquently expresses in these 12 tunes are deep and real...they've been grown and developed over the course of a lifetime. In 'The wedding dance', he can sings from the point of view of a dad dancing with his grown daughter at her wedding, musing on the gift of being a parent and taking comfort in the gentle touch of his wife's hand in his, and in the process illuminate the precious and rare treasures of the experiences without getting maudlin in the least. In 'The gifts', he has crafted a song that sits so comfortably in the bardic tradition of Ireland that it could easily be mistaken as traditional, a classic passed down orally through the years. 'The wild west' speaks from the heart of a man living at the cusp of the old ways and the new, knowing that change is inevitable, but aching for what will soon be lost forever.
Several of the songs relate the joys and pain of long-term, deep relationships...and all of us know that they're filled with both. Richard knows that we have to accept both happiness and sorrow as gifts, as opportunities for learning, growth and appreciation...and his songs convey that wisdom gently but firmly. 'We're not strangers' has one of the most poignant choruses I've ever run across: 'Is there something I cannot give you? Is it something that we had before? No one's as perfect as a stranger, and we're not strangers anymore.' At the same time the song acknowledges the bumps in the road, it asks the questions that too often go unasked...the reaching out that is so vital.
There is humor here as well: 'If you practice hard enough' is spoken over a Bach prelude played on the piano, illustrating one aspect of the related tale; 'Three men died and went to heaven' takes a joke that's been passed around for decades in many forms and makes it funny one more time.
Social issues are represented also: 'My soul is rested' is a moving memory of the civil rights movement of the 1960s, a call for us to reach out and grasp the brotherhood that still, sadly, eludes us too often; 'the album's title track, 'People holding hands', decries the pain we inflict on others whose lifestyle choices don't align comfortably with our own.
The album ends with 'Lying in this bed', a love song of the depth that few others can write.
Richard's voice and guitar are in fine form, as ever...and the choice of accompanying musicians is as near perfect as it could be. The arrangements are full where they need to be, and simple where it's appropriate...never too heavy or crowded, and never, ever thin.
Pass this album up at your peril...and if Richard comes to your area to play, by all means get out and hear him in person. Both are experiences that will touch your mind, heart and soul.

Excellent.......2002-07-29
There isn't much to say that hasn't already been said, so I'll keep it brief. These guys had me at the very first listen. This first record is a little rough around the edges, but songs like "Better 3/4ths", "Oxygen", and "Random" simply rock out. Never mind the incredible songwriting techniques - the first and last tracks are mirror images of each other, the first being an introduction, and the final track where the lyrics finally come in. Their second CD ("World Renown for Romance") is polished and unbelievable. The latest release ("Then is the New Now") comes out August 20th and should be available in stores everywhere. I'm looking forward to it.
Greatest band to walk the face of the Earth..........2002-01-05
This is the most amazing album ever written. It's music that calms your heart, but at the same time gives you the power to take on the Earth and then journey into space. Fully melodic bell-tones layered over thrashing(but bearable) chords. Intricate musicianshipship with a touch of Orion's Nebula thrown in to give birth to a new emotion. When you hear more instruments than are actyually being played, you feel the touch of God. This band is truly gifted...
An innovative, exciting, and inspiring auditory experience.......2001-06-02
You can't define this album. Simple, thrashing power cords layered under spacey guitar noises give way to complex riffs and intricate melodies. This album moves dynamically, from soft to passionate, from somber to excited, and then back to where it started from.
The music is emo. It is also in space. Then there's some good old fashion rock. Or is it? This band doesn't fit very neatly into any great category, but plenty of smaller categories beg for this band's attention.
This is the most soothing, thrashing music you'll hear. It's a combination that mirrors the emotional experiences of our lives. Existing amidst the effect-covered guitars is a real appreciation for true love. It is apparent through every aspect of the music.
It makes you want to fall in love.
space porn.......2000-07-07
this album totally rocks. i picked it up and it is orgasmic. the live show is what i am waiting for. i have never seen them live but i am looking forward to it. the album is kindof moody but uplifting at the same time. there isnt much here that i dont like. great songs great lay out and the fact that they thanked no one on the record makes it even cooler. the production lacks in some areas but its a first album. looking forward to the next one. keep the emo. they sound alot like a band from orlando named dear ephesus that is the only other drawback
fan from florida.......2000-03-30
great cd! a little bit of shoegazer, a little bit of math rock, a little bit of space rock, and a whole lot of emo combine to make this cd one memorable listen. if you liked this cd, check out their live show! 20 times better. if you like emo, but hate the fact that their singers can't sing, only whine, then check out denison marrs. finally, there is an emo band that has mastered the full spectrum of not only the emo genre, but several others as well!
