Product Description
This new CD finds Suzzy & Maggie (2/3 of the legendary Roches) performing once again as a duo and can be the viewed (and heard) as the "more personal" follow-up to their critically-acclaimed and successful previous recording "Zero Church." Where that CD took a more universal spiritual tack, "Why the Long Face" provides the same rich resonance by looking inward. Stunningly produced by Stewart Lerman & Suzzy Roche, it continues The Roches tradition of dodging cliché and pushing every envelope in sight. As one would expect, the harmonies and lyrics are as exquisite as they are thought-provoking and make manifest why these women are some of the finest writers and singers working today.

5 out of 5 stars Forgive the cheesy title, but a star is re-born once again........2007-07-09

In 1954, Judy Garland gave the most acclaimed performance of her career as a musical movie star in George Cukor's musical remake of the 1937 straight-up drama A Star Is Born. After its premiere, the film was heavily edited and would not be seen in its near complete form again for nearly thirty years. Judy was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance, but lost to Grace Kelly, to the chagrin of many Garland fans to this day, as well as many celebrities of the day. (Groucho Mark famously called it the biggest robbery since Brinks.)

In all that mess, the soundtrack was released by Columbia on vinyl record in mono and has since never been out of print and was a best-seller for years. In 1988, Columbia took the musical numbers and the overture directly from the film's stereo soundtrack (As, sadly, stereo soundtrack masters no longer existed.) and released those onto CD. The sound quality was somewhat horrendous, but digital audio was still in its infancy and not much else could be done.

In 2004, for the film's 50th anniversary, Columbia, Legacy, and Sony Music Soundtrax released this incredible new expanded remastered CD reissue of the film's soundtrack. This is the most complete soundtrack you can find and it's definitely worth upgrading from your 1988 CD release.

This CD contains not only all of the songs, including an extended intro to The Man That Got Away which was shortened in the film as well as the complete intro to Gotta Have Me Go With You, but also contains a near complete release of the instrumental score, which includes whole tracks and parts of tracks that were not used in the film, as well as an alternate vocal take of It's A New World, the deleted When My Sugar Walks Down The Street segment from Born In A Trunk, and a static-y complete version of The Trinidad Coconut Oil Shampoo Commercial, which was taken from a worn acetate playback disc - the only complete recording in existence.

The soundtrack is taken from a mixing and matching of several elements, such as acetate playback discs, the original Columbia mono soundtrack album masters, and the film's 4-track stereo soundtrack, among others. This means that the soundtrack goes back and forth from being stereo and mono. However, this does not detract from my listening experience any, and frankly, I can't tell much of a difference. One interesting note is that Gotta Have Me Go With You uses both the film's soundtrack and the mono soundtrack album masters to create a faithful listening experience, from the mono instrumental intro to the song itself, which except for a short portion, is taken from the film's 4-channel soundtrack. (The mono portion of the vocal part was used to edit out some plot-related screams that were present in the 1988 release. This method of retaining the aural integrity of Gotta Have Me Go With You was also used when it was included on the Rhino Records compilation Judy Garland In Hollywood: Her Greatest Movie Hits.)

Despite the fact that this soundtrack is taken from several different surviving elements and sadly not from a single set of elements, as Warner Bros. didn't have the foresight to save everything like MGM and Disney did, this is an excellent presentation of this landmark soundtrack. The sound quality for the most part is excellent, and the liner notes are also wonderful. Garland historian John Fricke writes a small essay on the production of the film and an annotated guide to the soundtrack, which gives a synopsis of the plot and also indicates where the tracks from the CD appear in the film. Producer Didier C. Deutsch also writes a small essay on the creation of this CD release, giving notes on the elements and some specific tracks.

Amazon is offering this soundtrack at an excellent price, and I have to say, it's a bargain for a soundtrack of this caliber and sound quality. Any Garland fan or movie soundtrack fan should have this in their collection.

5 out of 5 stars A Star Is Born Soundtrack Review.......2007-01-10

A really excellent soundtrack to go with an excellent movie. This is some of Judy Garland's best material in both music and acting. The power of her voice on "The Man That Got Away" is amazing. "Born In A Trunk", "It's A New World", "Someone At Last" and "Lose That Long Face" are other recommended tracks. This is a MUST HAVE for all you Judy Garland fans.

5 out of 5 stars Judy at her peak!.......2006-05-30

Judy Garland's finest film work was "A Star Is Born." Because she and her husband, Sid Luft, were also the producers, it was the most intensely involving production she had ever undertaken. The laser focus of her brilliant talent was never before realized on film to this degree. Also, she had gained tremendous personal confidence due to the unprecedented audience response to the concerts she had done between her MGM films and ASIB. The love with which the live audience embraced her, brought new heights to her acting as well.
The production values of the film were top of the line and it shows on this fine CD. It's a chance to experience Judy's talent on a more intimate basis without the visuals.
A must-have for every serious Garland collector.

5 out of 5 stars a "Star" shines like never before..........2005-04-27

This reissued remaster of A STAR IS BORN is a must-own for fans of the movie, and in particular those who were somewhat dissatified by the previous CD edition (CK 44389). That edition was great for offering us most of the main numbers in stereo/mono mix but was marred by poor analogue distortion and other remastering problems (though this was the best that could have been done at the time). This new edition (CK 65965) presents the entire score, including background and incidental sections as well as the cut material, in a sparkling new package.

The big bonus for getting this latest edition is for Garland's complete rendition of "The Trinidad Coconut Oil Shampoo Commercial" (without the dialogue of James Mason). This has been taken from a rare acetate master, so while the sound quality is not the best, having the number complete without interrupting dialogue is a more than ample compensation. You will notice too that "Lose That Long Face" has been newly mastered from a better stereo source (cutting out the thunder-crashes that were heard on the first CD master, and Garland's singing no longer has those violent analogue fluctuations during the introduction). "Gotta Have Me Go with You" is now presented without the screams and noises, in a new master from the mono soundtrack.

"When My Baby Walks Down the Street", a section cut from the "Born in a Trunk" sequence, has been added as a bonus track. This sparkling-new STAR IS BORN reissue is a great tribute to what is most definitely Judy Garland's greatest hour on film.

5 out of 5 stars Musical perfection of the highest magnitude!!!.......2005-02-25

Was there ever a more perfect voice than the one possessed by Judy Garland? Powerful yet gentle. Dynamic yet restrained. Bone-chilling yet soothing. She had the pipes!

And her instrument was showcased at its best in the music from her triumphant "A Star is Born".

This expanded version is a bona-fide treasure with the highlight being Garland's earth-shattering "The Man That Got Away," presented with vocals and several instrumental versions. Along with "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," and "The Trolley Song", "The Man That Got Away" is an essential for Garland fans, as well as those that know a good song when they hear it.

The fifteen-minute medley that was featured in the film as the "introduction" of "Vicki" to the public is another outstanding track, featuring "Born in a Trunk", "Suwanee," and "My Melancholy Baby," all exquisitely performed by the legendary talent.

Clocking in at just under eighty minutes, the soundtrack to the classic film is, indeed, in a class by itself, and deserving of repeated listening, maintaining its "freshness" after more than five decades.

4 out of 5 stars I Miss Terre.......2007-05-12

I do so enjoy this, but miss Terre and her voice, guitar and overall feeling of the three together. Actually, this recording stands on it's own quite well and has some amazing standout tracks, it's just that as a longtime Roches fan, i miss the three together. You will not regret owning this recording and it will be played on a regular basis---it's wonderful---BUT do yourself a favor and buy it along with The Roches latest recording, "Moonswept." There ya go---now you have a great combo deal and something for comparison. Aw heck, you'll love them both---go for it!

3 out of 5 stars something's missing.......2005-08-05

Ever since 1989's "Speak", the best word to describe the Roche sisters' music has been 'subdued'. It is telling that the finest track on "Why the Long Face" is a remake of "The Broken Places", which dates from the "Speak" album.

So, after bottoming out with "Can We Go Home Now?", the Roches are back in a place where they make pleasant and well-produced music that can be likened to a foot bath. It's soothing, it tickles you a bit, but it doesn't make you want to jump up and do somersaults. In fact, it's kind of enervating.

"Why The Long Face" features the usual fretful songs about the world's terrible state and one's own 'bad self' from Suzzy. Other songs include efforts to set other people's poems to music, of which only "The Warwick Flog" is successful.

As for the rest--- there aren't any really bad songs here, but only "I Don't Have You", which someone else wrote, is up to the level of their first and best albums.

The packaging is wonderful.

Come back, Terre. Your fire is needed, here.

5 out of 5 stars 2 outta 3 ain't bad!.......2004-11-02

I have been a fan of this talented family for many years and this latest CD helps explain why. This grouping of songs is as comfortable and familiar as a soft quilt made from your favorite old clothes and as fresh and new as a 5:00 am morning glory. Long-time fans will recognize a couple of tunes which have been "gussied up" a bit. If you enjoy heart felt lyrics and refreshing harmonies you need to own this CD. It is simply beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Keep On Doing !!!!!!!!!!.......2004-10-28

Incredible! What a wonderful cd to take an escape to from all the heartless, ordinary songs you hear on the radio today. Suzzy and Maggie are like fine wines.........they just get better with age. A couple of tracks have been done before by them (Broken Places, La Vie C'est La Vie, and One Season), but I kinda like these new fresh versions. As far as the other songs go, great words, luscious harmonies, and beautiful instruments. I have to admit I do miss their sister Terre's vocals, but don't let that keep you from buying this cd, it will put a smile on your face and warm your soul. I also recommend seeing them live as they put on a wonderful show. They have tour dates posted on their website www.roches.com

5 out of 5 stars Full of Grace.......2004-10-05

I'm so happy the Roche sisters are still making music I can't see straight. Maggie's voice, in particular, is just getting better and better. Such graceful, lovely harmonies, there's nothing else out there quite like it...The way in which Suzzy and Maggie's voices blend and interweave, phenomenal.
Standouts for me include "The Warwick Flag," "Don't be Afraid," and "La Vie C'est La Vie." Having seen the Roche's in concert many times, I noticed that I didn't really miss the presence of Terri, her high voice becoming strained and thin of late. I found the sound of this cd to be peaceful, calming, and not a little poignant -- yet never melancholy. What a gift this family has! May they sing forever.

4 out of 5 stars Why the Long Face - Why haven't you heard it?.......2004-09-14

The fact that Big Country continued to make records long after the MTV fave 'In a Big Country' seems to surprise most listeners. I loved BC in the 80s, but even I let them drop off my radar around '89 or so. Anyone that listened to BC way back when and got caught up by the anthemic sounds of their early work should definitely invest in 'Why the Long Face.' The sound isn't quite as majestic as the first LPs, but it's harder, it's louder, and Stuart Adamson's lyrics are - dare I say it? - even better than the old stuff. Once I discovered the CD, it quickly became my favorite.

3 out of 5 stars Unbridled energy, catchy hooks permeate "Why The Long Face".......2003-06-20

...

Scottish quartet Big Country are another group pigeon- holed with the stigma of being an 80's band, with a single shining moment in time. Of course the year was 1983, the album "The Crossing" and the singles "In A Big Country" and "Fields Of Fire".
From that initial siccess the Glasgow act was given but a small strand of rope from which to cling on to and any opprtunity to build a legion of followers from album to album was a small strand for fans hold onto.
"Why The Long Face" their 1995 release, is proof that the group have never stopped working on projects, and this record, like past Big Country offerings, is action- packed. Though a few a few tracks on "Long Face" are somewhat predictable, the emphasis on song and story by lead singer Stuart Adamson are the building blocks of the album.
The band are at their high- energy best with strong off- note vocal riffs, and a slight blues guitar touch on "Message of Love",a fuller dose of the latter and smooth hi- hat led work by drummer Mark Brzezcki on "I'm Not Ashamed", and a well- desigend E- Bow solo on the little song "Sail Into Nothing" .
The old bagpipe sound and rolling funk bass line propel "You Dreamer" and "Thunder And Lightning",with the latter expoliting Adamson's Scottish brogue creeping into the lyrics and Brzezcki's military inspired beat providing backdrop
"Send You" is a locomotive that builds up steam with a flawless guitar solo with the only drawback being that the song is too short.
Brezezcki shines again making tempo breaks seem routine with Butler aiding and abeiting, plus bright guitar work on Bruce Watson's part on "One In A Million",and more of the same on the albums most explosive track,"God's Great Mistake, which has about four infectious hooks squeezed into the body of the song. Other distinctions to bear include the hi- hat attacks in mid- stride by Brezezcki, muddy and sinister sounding guitar tones from Watson, and Adamsons matching lyrics including the lines, "Guns are the last thing we need. The latest in monsters a word from our sponsors, I wait for the weather map guy. Who dosen't offer much here but he's got a matching tie".
Add to the hi- lites the bright and punchy bass line and bluesy guitar mood of "Take You To The Moon",and there are enough distinctive traits out of the 14 tracks that make "Why The Long Face" a solid if not a perfect piece of work.
The strength of this album's better cuts cover up the basic wounds sufficiently enough for one to be able to stand upright, making it a note-worthy three star album....

4 out of 5 stars A super effort!.......2002-02-15

This 1995 cd from 80S group Big Country is just wonderful. While not quite as catchy as some of their other efforts, the straight up rock and roll value is much increased! Simply put, it rocks and why I did not hear this on the radio is confounding. Standout songs include "You Dreamer", "Take You to the Moon", and "Blue on a Green planet." There is even an acoustic version of "In a Big Country" and a remake of Lou Reed's "Vicious" which are both a lot of fun. As usual, Stuart's writing is superb and both hopeful and hopeless.

4 out of 5 stars A Return to Form for Big Country.......2002-02-12

Big Country released this impressive album in 1995. This was consistently their strongest effort since Steeltown and the Seer. "You Dreamer", "Blue On a Green Planet", "Charlotte" and "One in a Million" are wonderful tunes and further testament to the late Stuart Adamson's songwriting abilities. Why this album was ignored at the time of its release is beyond me. A great cd from a great band. The songwriting and production on this cd are top notch. Production-wise, this one of the band's finest efforts. Not as lavish or as polished as their 80's albums, it has an refreshing honesty and passion to it, and the sound is still edgy and crisp. Stuart's death was a tragedy and a loss, his talent and voice will be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Melodic, straight-forward guitar rock at it's best.......1999-02-11

Forget anything you may have read in NME or Rolling Stone. Unless you're interested in the slapping of unjustified lavish praise on the likes of The Prodigy or Beck, this disc definitely deserves a listen. From the opening riff of "You Dreamer" to the guitar acrobatics of "Message Of Love," "Wildland In My Heart," and "Far From Me To You," Big Country takes you on a sonic tour de force of unrelenting ryhthmic melodies certain to make any true rock fan forget the current musical flavor of the month. Stuart Adamson and the rest of the band have been at it since '83, but faded into obscurity on the stateside scene shortly thereafter. In that time, they have released a string of quality rock albums in the purest form. Combining earnest and insightful lyrics with solid musicianship and hooks aplenty, the band still stand as a testament to what real rock music has always been about - great songs on disc, or for anyone fortunate enough to catch them live (which plenty of Stones fans did during the european leg of The Voodoo Lounge tour). You can still find the import version if your lucky, and if further convincing is necessary, be sure to first que up the blistering axe-work demonstrated by Adamson on the most excellent "Blue On A Green Planet."

1 out of 5 stars Why spend the money?.......2002-05-03

Big Country had a great sound back in the day, but that day's gone now. Try listening to Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot instead--it's simply the greatest cd ever released in our lifetime.

4 out of 5 stars Why the Long Face - Why Haven't You Heard It?.......2001-01-12

The fact that Big Country continued to make records long after the MTV fave 'In a Big Country' seems to surprise most listeners. I absolutely loved BC in the 80s, but even I let them drop off my radar around '89 or so.

5 out of 5 stars WTLF Reissue Worth Reconsidering.......2000-05-27

I've heard this reissue of the 1995 studio album from Big Country has a different mix. It certainly has the same tracks, but it does have a different cover. I preferred the original cover's visual pun. This must be one of my favorite BC studio albums, else why would it get played so much in my office. I still say to those 1980s fans of the band: get Buffalo Skinners, Why the Long Face, and the new Driving to Damascus and you will not be disappointed. I love this group and I love their 1990s studio stuff as much as the 1980s. When the US rediscovers this band Stuart Adamson will be recognized as a songwriter and instrumentalist on par with Pete Townsend or Paul Weller--none too soon.

Perhaps radio will catch on to them and give Buffalo Skinners, this lp, and Driving to Damascus some airplay?

4 out of 5 stars Should have been a hit.......2001-02-20

I agree with Grant, the Aussie, in most respects. I did not notice the country influences as much as I did the even harder rock than many BC releases. True, "Far From Me To You" is a standout track and one of my favorite BC tracks, but it is one of the few here to have an overt country influence. "Ships" from the even better release, The Buffalo Skinners, has a stronger country flavor. The superlative, "Driving To Damascus", has a couple of country tinged tracks, as well. By the way, you gotta get this one just for the unplugged version of "In a Big Country". This cd has 16 tracks and is a good value for the money. Not the place to start your BC collection, but you'll have to have it.

5 out of 5 stars This is a must buy - a real classic BC album.......2000-09-12

Big Country has brought out a classic and in my opinion one of their best. A real upbeat, and slightly country feeling album (And I don't like Country Music). This album is nothing like "The Crossing" or "The Seer". "Far From Me To You", will have you boping around playing the air guitar in the lounge room, "You Dreamer", will have you tapping away as will the rest of the album. If you like great music this is a must get album to add to the CD collection.
