Greg Brown sounds like he has dirt beneath his fingernails, gravel in his throat, and stars in his eyes. Milk of the Moon, the 19th album of Brown's career, reasserts his dual status as both the bard of the heartland and the Barry White of folk-blues. It's the first Brown disc in a good while not to feature the smoky slide guitar of Bo Ramsey (who was busy recording and touring with Lucinda Williams), and the result is the simpler, spare sound of the tender, nostalgic ballad "Telling Stories" and the spine-tingling opener "Lull It Bye." There are some new touches, too: an organ on "Steady Love," a vocal distortion effect on "Let Me Be Your Gigolo" and "The Moon Is Nearly Full," and here and there the harmonies of Karen Savoca (who succeeds the likes of Prudence Johnson and Kate MacKenzie as Brown's female vocal foil). It may not match classics like Further In, The Poet Game, and In the Dark with You, but Milk of the Moon is a worthy addition to Brown's rich catalog. --Anders Smith Lindall

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Greg Brown.......2003-11-15

Once again Greg Brown covers the full spectrum of emotions with fine lyrics and beautiful music ranging from a solo banjo to some sweet blues guitar. I recommend this album for the long time Greg Brown listener as well as for a first time Greg Brown purchase. I've been a fan of Greg Brown since the 80's when I heard him on PHC and purchased 44&66 on vinyl. Milk of the Moon is fine album.

5 out of 5 stars mellifluous and memorable.......2003-01-18

I got this album today and can't stop listening to it. "Telling Stories" and "Oh You" are two of the best songs I've heard in a long long time. Greg Brown's baritone, unlike some who have ended up that way after years of vocal abuse, seems natural and unforced. This album just flows, and is one of the best folk albums of the year.

5 out of 5 stars Greg does it again!!!!! A future Country/Folk masterpiece.......2002-09-29

I had expected to just hear a typical Greg Brown album. ALWAYS PROFILIC. I was jamming to this new CD with a passion. This album could go down to be very well be one of the first new Folk "masterpiece" of the new century. Greg once again is true to his roots, as he does perform in a personal and warm premise. One of my favorite tracks would be "A Little Excited" (I hope when he performs in concert at McCabe's Guitar Shop in L.A. next time, he will perform that track) Heck, with an album of exceptional quality as this, who wouldn't be a "little excited" over ??? Peace - JG "The Bear"

5 out of 5 stars Back to Form.......2002-04-16

Greg Brown is probably the only musician of whom I would say I am a fan. Generally, I feel affinity for albums rather than musicians. But I look forward to each release of Greg's because his music connects with me so frequently. Not every album does that, but more than is true of most musicians. For example, I thought his last album, "Covenant," was not up to his usual standards of songwriting and it didn't really connect with me.

"Milk of the Moon," on the other hand, is a step back toward "Poet Game" and "Further In" and "Slant 6 Mind," which are the albums I regard as his strongest and some of the best albums ever recorded by anyone. This one has a different sound and feel, which is not surprising since he is working with different musicians, a different producer, and in a different studio. But there is no mistaking it is still a Greg Brown record, and, for my money, it is an excellent one.

5 out of 5 stars Greg Does the Milky Way.......2002-04-12

Veteran folkbard Greg Brown knows the dark and muddy places of the heart. On his latest Redhouse Recording, he sings of love found, lost, and better left alone. With ethereal vocal backup from Karen Savoca, and the sometimes structured, sometimes writhing backup from axe-ter Pete Heitzman, Greg's smoky voice alternately comforts, confronts, and condemns.
The recording visits dark blues ("The Moon is Nearly Full"), primitive country (a lilting "Lull it Bye", featuring just Greg and his banjo), even 60's Hammond Organ funk ("Steady Love"). In "Smell of Coffee", Greg paints a vivid minimalist picture, with just a few sharply defined strokes. In "Telling Stories", Greg does what Greg does best: conjures up a time, place and feel so real we can all drop by for a rest. For that, we thank him.

    Album Description

Eerie stuttering fostpolk / folktronica with a taste for sunshine and Temesta, by Nick Grey & minimalist guitarist Nihiruneko. An oneiric, surreal & psychedelic trip to the World Mountain, somewhere between Current 93, Black Heart Procession and Cocorosie. Nick grey 's current work involves collaborations with Kris Force (from Amber Asylum), Richard Moult (Current 93) & 48 Cameras (an international cult group featuring Gerard Malanga, Michael Gira / ex-Swans, David Coulter ex-Pogues.) He currently lives in Montreal, and his solo work features a recent full-length album, available on Hand/eye. Nihiruneko is an imaginative experimental (as in "insane") guitarist from Japan, now living in France (does that say it all?). °catlandgrey° is his first musical project - aside from hunting down the Pascals in Tokyo with a tape recorder. 5 out of 5 stars so nice.......2006-06-26

Imagine the sweeping epic grandeur of Godspeed You Black Emperor, the glistening frosted filigree of Sigur Ros and the dark folk gravity of Steve Von Till of Neurosis' solo work all combined within one album. Sound good to you? It sure does to me! Such is the case with Catlandgrey's self-titled album. Utter sprawling gorgeousness. Simple spare drumming spread out over swoonsome dreaminess and moody melancholia, horns moan, bells chime, guitars shimmer and drift, vocals whisper and croon, everything wrapped in a glistening mist of reverb, flecked with tiny glimmers of electronica glitchery. So nice.

Packaged in a hand numbered black digipak with a tiny flying cat photo affixed to the front and a googly eye!

      Album Description

Suggested Tracks: SALVATION ROAD, EVERYTHING BUT ANSWERS, MILLION MILES FROM HOME Veteran singer-songwriter, producer and Native-American (Choctaw-Cherokee) activist Robert Richmond returns with a follow up to his acclaimed "Fortune Teller" CD with a full-length offering titled "SOUR MILK MOON" (TGR77004). The album, which features twelve songs and showcases his stellar band, takes us a little deeper into his world of Native-Americana with poignant looks at reservation life ("Rusty Old Ford"), death row ("Nowhere Left To Hide"), modern day questions of ethics ("Salvation Road", "Everything But Answers" and "Chicken Shit Blues") and the curse of addiction and life on the road ("Million Miles From Home" and "Beyond The Dark.") The album also includes new, electrified versions of "Angel In Chains" and the airplay heavy "Fortune Teller," both of which were featured in semi-acoustic versions of his first release. SOUR MILK MOON is a unique roots oriented glimpse at the issues of living in two worlds, the common thread of all Native-Americans in todays society. The album also gives us a "naked-soul" view of the inner workings of a man who has seen and lived through difficult times while still maintaining a sense of hope and a passion for living. Richmond's soulful, one-of-a-kind vocal styling and lyrical fluidness are a welcome relief from the superficial prefab slop that has sadly become the norm in todays' hit parade. The band, which includes Hawaiian Native Dennis Bellinger (Grand Funk Railroad) on bass, and session whips Pat Beeney and Jory Petiprin on drums and lead guitar, is complimented by guest appearances from Native-American music award winning flutist Tommy Wildcat along with keyboard whiz Dan Warren (MCA), fellow Native-American activist Lawrence Sampson and Two Good Reason's own Marianne Murphy who plays piano and sings on "Salvation Road." Sour Milk Moon was recorded by multi-platinum engineer Al Hurschman (Ted Nugent, Bob! Seger, The Rockets, Parliament, Winans) at Alliance Recording and was produced by Robert Richmond. Neither traditional Native music nor strickly Americana roots; Richmond's songs, like the man himself, are a blend of everything he has been through. Roots, blues, country- all these influences can be heard yet with the experience and wisdom to make it somehow all his own. Robert will tour the U.S throughout the summer of 2004 in support of the album and is available for interviews, in-stores and Thai food at your request.

3 out of 5 stars Disc 2 Held Accountable For Brief Love Affair With Trance Genre!.......2007-07-19

Bought this album the week it was released in 2000. This was still during the days when I had no idea what the difference between electronica's multiple genres were. I liked electronic music and my usual pattern in buying electronica albums was to hear a track at a club or on the radio, find out the name and buy a two disc compilation album just for the sole reason that that one recognizable track name was listed on the back. Come on...most of us started like this right?!

Well this album was my first "I don't recognize any of the listed tracks" / "What the hell is trance anyway?" impulsive electronica purchases. A two disc album featuring two different trance DJ's that was suppose to represent America's unique style and sound of trance during that time period.

Disc 1 is mixed by Taylor. Not much to get excited about with this set. Mixing is not overly impressive either.

Disc 2 is mixed by Jimmy Van M and created much more of a buzz for me. Even when I listen to it today, I'm still incredible impressed with the sound and feel than Jimmy Van M conjured up for the first 2/3rds of this set. As the title states, I was sold on the idea that trance was going to be my preferred genre after listening to this disc. "Way of Love" by Jericho was my favorite track for nearly a year. It's not all good though. That fantastic sounding trance groove established over the first seven tracks disappears to a more generic trance sound by track 8 till the end of the set. Very dissapointing.

Although my tastes in electronica have changed, I sometimes wonder if I would have stayed a trance fan longer if more commerical trance albums included sets like this one. I still go back and listen to a lot of older trance albums that get these rave reviews (e.g. Tranceport by Paul Oakenfold) but I'm never as impressed as I was initially with disc 2 of Trance Nation America.

            Disc 1 gets 2.5/stars and Disc 2, 3.5/5 stars.
