About the Artist
For more than a decade, Eric Lowenand Dan Navarro have written, recorded and toured for a growing national audience. Their six CDs, including their new "Live Radio" showcase self-penned songs of experience, colored by supple acoustic-based arrangements centered around their intertwined voices.

Songwriters of notable cachet, their works have been recorded by artists as diverse as Pat Benatar (the worldwide Top 5 hit "We Belong"), The Bangles, The Four Tops, Dave Edmunds, The Temptations and a host of others. Out of their success as songwriters came the impetus for forming Lowen & Navarro: They wanted to sing their songs themselves.

In 1988, they began a weekly residency at The Breakaway in Venice, CA and played what they pleased. They didn't actively promote the shows or invite their music business friends. Yet within a year, crowds were growing and a buzz started that coincided with an emerging "Nu-Folk" scene in LA. By the end of 1989 they were recording their first album. In 1990, their debut, "Walking On A Wire", was released by Chameleon Records to rave reviews. Produced by Jim Scott (BoDeans, Samples, Whiskeytown), the album built a radio base with the title track and "The Spell You're Under". They toured relentlessly and found responsive audiences nationwide, particularly in Washington DC, Baltimore, Chicago, Minneapolis and Denver, cities that remain L &N strongholds to this day. Three years later, Parachute-Mercury Records issued the lovely Broken Moon as the label's inaugural relase. The disc was a hit at Triple-A radio with "All Is Quiet", "Constant As The Night" and "Just To See You". Months of touring followed, some of it in the subzero cold snap of 1994. With their fan base growing, Mercury purchased "Walking On A Wire" in 1994 and reissued it with three bonus tracks, including "Rapt In You", another Triple-A hit.

They followed in 1995 with the enigmatic Pendulum, where their sound was honed to a fine edge by lean arrangements and a close vocal presence. It took to the airwaves featuring not only new songs from their own pens but showing off L&N's collaboration abilities. Eric & Dan wrote with such greats as Jules Shear, Billy Steinberg and Gretchen Peters. The latter, a writer with several Top 10 Country tunes and a Grammy to her credit helped pen "Cry", a tune Dan describes as "a sad love song with a happy tempo".

Signing with Intersound Records in 1997, they released Live Wire, a 1989 club performance that earned them their first press attention and two record deals. Their newest album, Scratch At The Door, was released in mid-1998. Self-produced, it addresses new subjects as their lives enter new phases. The first single, "When The Lights Go Down", is a wry ode to life in the middle lane and has received substancial national airplay. The driving "Do With Me What You Will" hit radio in March, 1999.

It is through their live shows that Lowen & Navarro have built their greatest reputation. Whether as a duo or with rhythm section backing, they always deliver dynamic, emotional, uplifting performances to fiercely loyal audiences.

Their trademark is a courageous "TFA" encore (totally f. . . acoustic), dispensing with stage, sound system and stage lighting, performed from the middle of the audience. It is a riveting experience that at first quiets and subsequently energizes an audience to a roaring ovation. Live Radio carries through this tradition into the hands of their fans.

Through the years, Lowen & Navarro continue to document humanity's dignity and frailty, to examine life's losses and lessons. Their songs are all conveyed with an urgency and immediacy that is the hallmark of their commitment to their music and their audience. Collected from four shows on Roz & Howard Larman's FolkScene radio program in Los Angeles, these warm and stirring performances are totally acoustic. The CD ncludes the previously unreleased "Waltzing the Shadows" and such

5 out of 5 stars These Guys Should Be Superstars.......2006-02-22

I have now purchased all of their albums, and I can't pick a favorite - each is excellent: thoughtful lyrics and wonderful harmonies. Dan Navarro's voice is so smoothe and Eric Lowen's high harmonies just fit perfectly. I've been lucky to see them in small venues three times in the last six months - and can not believe they don't command more of a following. They joke about being a non-profit organization (not by design). If you have a chance to see them live - don't miss it: the music is wonderful, they are both witty and intelligent and they have a real connection to the audience. If you can't make their show, this disc is the next best thing. Next, you will want to buy "All the Time In the World" and then "Walking On a Wire." Then, you will be like me, saying "Why the hell aren't these guys SUPERSTARS!!!"

5 out of 5 stars Lowen and Navarro at their best.......2003-11-19

L&N combine terrific harmonies with an accoustical backdrop. The quality of the album demonstrates their strength as musicians and singers, capture the qualities of a live show with nearly the production values of a studio recording. Their music touches the heart and appeals to people young and old.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2002-09-30

I feel like I've been missing something for many years. Heard L&N on NPR this past summer and then ordered Live Radio on line. I can't get enough of this CD. Usually after a while the newness fades but with this gem there is something different to hear all the time. Their songwriting is superb, the playing totally clean, the harmonies powerful, and the production on this CD perhaps the best I've ever heard. Hard to imagine it wasn't done in a studio with numerous takes. These guys must be fabulous live and I'm looking for them to come anywhere near here. Can't recommend this CD enough. It's 6+ stars.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2002-08-30

I first heard about these two very talented songwriters/singers during an interview on NPR's Morning Edition. I thought I'd buy the CD after they played two of the tracks from it. I haven't been disappointed. In fact, I listen to it every day at work and plan to purchase the rest of their CD's. They are so good that it is hard to believe that these recordings are live performances. Great lyrics, amazing harmony, solid tunes.

5 out of 5 stars A Best Kept Secret.......2001-12-27

You don't know what you're missing if you pass up the opportunity to listen to L&N. I have been a listener and fan since 1990, and L&N continue to get better with age. Nevermind that these guys have written blockbuster songs for artists such as Pat Benatar, or that one has a famous, hard rocking ex-Red Hot Chili Pepper/Jane's Addiction, guitarist, brother. L&N can live and celebrate their own laurels. They could take a lot of the younger artists of today to songwriting school. Lovely lyrics. Excellent music. Catchy harmonies and melodies. Songsmithing has never been done so well.

3 out of 5 stars Cloyingly Sincere.......2001-07-27

Add two more stars to my rating if you are A) a true blue Lowen & Navarro fan or B) longing for 41 minutes of non-stop good intentions.

I bought a used copy on a lark of Lowen & Navarro's 1993 album "Broken Moon" a while ago and was quite surprised at how much I liked it. Great guitars, pleasant vocals, neat & varied backing instruments, and intelligent lyrics abounded. Later, I found a copy of 1990's "Walking On A Wire" and figured I'd give it a try. The first song "Somewhere Far Away" sounded well enough. The third, "Oh Mary" began to put me to wondering as they sung about the joys of winning over a sylph named, amazingly enough, Mary. Girls who just finished watching "Titanic" for the 36th time would likely love this whereas I was wondering if an uxorious milksop may actually be what's in the making. The fifth song "Seven Bridges" is a nice enough song about a boy (really all of us collectively) venturing out into the world seeking the greener grass somewhere else only to eventually realize that "Happiness Is Lubbock Texas In My Rearview Mirror". Then tragedy struck at the eighth song. Pat Benatar has almost always irritated me. She is forever either whining, preening, or strutting about giving everyone good reason to loathe Long Island. Little did I know that Lowen & Navarro are the one's who originally wrote "We Belong" that good ol' Pat crooned (croned?) a few years ago. I hated that song, mostly because of Patricia's unctuous bathos. Now how can I be objective about the original version?! Well, if I have to, I will admit that I usually skip over it or simply avoid the terror of random chance on shuffle play. The French also tend to infuriate me so, the ninth song "C'Est La Vie" was at an unfair disadvantage initially. The first listen to "Walking On A Wire" was ironically nearly salvaged however, by the last track "Hammerhead Shark". This simple but amusing song seems to have almost been added in at the last minute when they realized the album would be below 40 minutes without it. Seems they may have been either a little "lubricated" when they recorded it or, drank way too much Kool-Aid.

You may be fairly inclined now (particularly if you like this album) to howl that that was only one listen! I must play it again to get more objectivity. You are correct, and I did. I found it does get better with a few listens but, my socks stayed firmly on my feet through all of those listens. The remaining songs are actually all very acceptable. The title cut and "She Said No" are rather good and have probably seen a good amount of airplay on certain radio stations.

The bottom line: Now that I've used some of my best 50 cent words seemingly ripping apart this album, what do you think I will recommend? You might be surprised. "Walking On A Wire" I believe best reflects the old gender divide of "Men are from Mars and women are from Venus". Most average guys are not going to dig this well done album; it's as simple as that. There are some exceptions, and I commend those exceptions but, you will not see a gold record from this album on Lowen & Navarro's company wall. Women will be much more sympathetic overall to this album. The previously mentioned "Broken Moon" album of 1993 I believe is a better album overall than "Walking On A Wire" showing to excellent effect how much L&N have improved in those three years. Definitely give both a good, long listen before you buy.

4 out of 5 stars Hit men doing it for themselves.......2001-07-07

Songwriting duo Eric Lowen and Dan Navarro have probably annoyed some of their more illustrious peers with this album.

The pair, who wrote Pat Benatar's "We Belong" and the Bangles' "I'll Set You Free" among others, said enough is enough and released their own record.

Normally the names behind the hits, this duo have come out and proven to be somewhat of a surprise. Most of the tracks here were sought by other performers with the title track for example, requested to be used as an Eddie Money single.

It is easy to see some big names turning such tracks as "What I Make Myself Believe" and "Someone Like You" into hits but this pair has done just fine without their help.

They seem right at home fusing pop and folk with good, but not overdone, harmonies, refreshing acoustic guitars and even a cello.

These professional hit men have produced well-rounded songs with both instant appeal and lasting value. Why didn't they do it sooner?

5 out of 5 stars finally found it!.......2000-02-29

wow! i haven't heard this album since 92! i had it on a tape which i've since lost and i didn't think these guys were still around. their harmonies are so great and their lyrics just make me wonder why there isn't more music like this on the radio.

5 out of 5 stars Their best!.......2000-02-08

I bought this when it first came out. I only heard one song in the record store (The Spell You're Under) and bought instantly. I've never done that with an album before. Every song on this album is excellent! Buy it!

    Product Description

Long known for their incisive songwriting and tight two part vocals, their tenth disc is their first recording of "covers" -- songs by other writers -- "songs we wish we'd written." The duo mines their full spectrum of their roots with well-known songs by their influences, chestnuts from their desert island disc collections and even a couple of songs by lesser-known buddies who deserve greater exposure. Tracks include Van Morrison's "Into The Mystic", The Left Banke's classic "Walk Away Renee", Rockpile's "Teacher Teacher", a smokey take on Gordon Lightfoot's "The Way I Feel", Hal Ketchum's "Small Town Saturday Night", The Bee Gees' soulful "To Love Somebody", the Ramones' "Blitzkrieg Bop" done folk-bluegrass style, "Good Things" by duo-buds The BoDeans, the Dobie Gray perrennial "Drift Away", little-known Tom Petty gem "It'll All Work Out", Sam & Dave's stirring "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby","Playing on the Runway" by acoustic guitar ace Jack Williams and "Fall" by eastmountainsouth co-writer Joshua Meltzer. The whole album was cut in just a few days with a Dream Team of players -- the legendary Jim Keltner on drums, Hutch Hutchinson on bass (Bonnie Raitt, The Neville Brothers), Phil Parlapiano on keys (Grant Lee Buffalo, John Prine), production, engineering and keys by John Whynot (Bruce Cockburn, Kathleen Edwards), and Richard Dodd on cello (Smashing Pumpkins, Christina Aguilera) in addition to Eric Lowen and Dan Navarro in their familiar guitar-vocal roles. A deeply satisfying erlease from start to finish. CD is enhanced with twelve minutes of video, viewable on your computer.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing songs & harmonies.......2005-07-05

This is one of those to put on for the long drive up the coast or while hiking in the desert. It's the feeling of a gorgeous day or the breeze blowing in the sunshine. Songs and lyrics that are poetic, and harmonies so sweet you'll cry. Saw these guys last month in concert, and as good as the cd is, it doesn't do them justice. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Like fine wine, L&N get better with age........2004-12-31

I have been a fan of L&N since their first album. Each time they come out with an album they are able to come out with an album even better than the last, and this album is no exception. I saw a commercial for this Album on TV, and my wife knows how much I like L&N and this was my surprise Christmas present that she told me I would never guess in a million years she would think about getting for me.

I have just had this CD for three days now and cant get enough of it. Each L&N Album, there is at least one song that is so addictive that I just listen to it over and over again. This album there are many great songs, but the song that I think signifies the guitar and vocal mastery that L&N are known for is "The Opposite of Everything"

I highly recommend this album to every L&N fan. Please support L&N and also support the ALS foundation. Eric Lowen was diagnosed with early ALS.

Hope you enjoy this CD as much as I do.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the wait!!!!.......2004-10-10

If you love the sound of beautiful acoustic guitars, mesmerizing harmonies, and intelligent lyrics, then you will love this new L&N CD!!!! The guys have put out a long-awaited CD that is packed with pure talent...especially "deep" and thought-proviking are "All the Time in the World," "The Grace Notes," "If I Was the Rain," and "Old Riverside." Although, I must say that many others are equally noteworthy. Tap along to "How Mighty Is the Silence" and "The Devil's In the Details." My two favorite songs are the opener, "Compass Point" and "The Opposite of Everything." The latter is one that you either "get" or scratch your head on...personally, it makes perfect sense to me!!! Enjoy! It is worth MORE than "the price of admission!"

5 out of 5 stars Even better than I expected!.......2006-01-09

This is my first Lowen and Navarro cd - heard them on xm radio's The Loft and had to investigate further. I've had it three days and have already ordered my next two, and have researched opportunities to hear them live in concert. The voices and harmonies are breathtaking, the lyrics speak intelligently to the human condition, and somehow I get the feeling I would really "like" these guys. If you are reading this, you are considering a purchase. I urge you to buy it - you won't be sorry!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent listen.......2003-05-17

If you are unfamiliar with the work of L&N, this is as good a place as any to get acquainted. While they may never achieve "main stream" popularity, their work is well worth your time. Simply put, the best endorsement I can give this album is, "It doesn't get old." Its replay value is very high, and feels like a comfortable old shirt each time you put it on. I highly recommend this, its a great place to start an introduction to Lowen & Navarro.

    5 out of 5 stars I Bought Every Album I Could Find.......2001-03-01

Lowen & Navarro came out of the so-called Paisley Underground that also produced the like-minded Bangles. L&N make excellent folk rock, differentiated from the pack by their superb singing and harmonizing. L&N mix upbeat, lively music with sorrowful introspective lyrics. It's a devastating combination. They are similar to any number of sixties folkies; Crosby, Stills And Nash, Simon & Garfunkel, Peter Paul And Mary, but they remind of no one so much as Brewer & Shipley (of `One Toke Over The Line' fame). This is music you can listen to all day. Sample lyrics:`...I had a teacher and he led me through the jungle, but where was he when I crumbled into pieces of clay, when I tried to put my best face on you know the damn thing always fit me wrong, too bad you got nothing, nothing to say..'. This is a band that I would expect to be all over the adult alternative charts, but somehow, they aren't! What fools these radio people are! All the tracks are excellent, but especially notable are `Looks Like Sunshine', `Pendulum', `Cry' and 'Until The Well Runs Dry'. I also recommend their other excellent albums WALKING ON A WIRE and BROKEN MOON

Lowen & Navarro have always been somewhat of an enigma, bubbling under the surface with a fiercely loyal core following who know the words to every song. L&N, however, have somehow remained out of pace with the taste-making vagaries of the industry at large. Longtime fans will be satisfied with Scratch at the Door, especially the beguiling melodies of the lead-off "When the Light Go Down" and "Maybe Tomorrow It Will Rain," the kind of well-crafted songs that sum up the duo's career. On the downside, portions of this album will seem a little too close to the '70s group America to some. There is an earnest passion, however, to songs such as "Weight of the World" and "Blessing" that is gently affecting, pleasing to the ear, and soft on the sensibilities. Lowen & Navarro are probably never going to reach the bright lights, but the generosity of their songs and performances ensures them the attention of a diet conscious few who tire of daily pop corn. --John Sutton-Smith

I don't understand how stuff like this ends up in the cut-out rack. I think this may be their best album since "Walking on a Wire" (which is absolutely incredible by the way). I love all their stuff, but I haven't listened to them for about 7 years. I just happened to be in the CD store the other day and picked this up, because I remembered how good they are. Their harmonies kick serious ass. Their voices are incredible. Another reviewer described them as one of the industry's best kept secrets...and I'd have to agree. This is quality material, and the only thing I see these guys suffering from is lack of exposure. I saw them live once and met them too...very cool people - awesome music!

2 out of 5 stars Not their best.......2003-05-15

I can't believe this was the followup album to "Pendulum". "Pendulum" is an absolute classic that stayed in my CD changer for years. Great lyrics, musical, memerable and showed great promise of things to come from this duo. "Scratch at the Door is quite a let down. The first five songs are okay but the rest of the CD seems as though they were under preasure to complete a CD in 24 hours or lose out. Five of the tracks pretty much sound alike but " Happy Birthay to u" should never have been recorded....horrible. Lets see what they can do next!

3 out of 5 stars scratch at the door.......2000-06-08

I heard them play on acoustic cafe 93.9. they played 3 songs, weight of the world, beyond the pale which were great! also Please Please Baby be on that train..... I thought it would be on this cd.... its not. I thought i could find it on another cd....baby be on that train. Did they include it on a cd?

5 out of 5 stars You don't know what you aremissing.......2000-01-06

If you haven't heard these guys, buy this CD. They are one of music's best kept secrets. This CD is full of songs that you can listen to over and over again. Great guitar work and tight vocals. Every CD these guys put out stays on my CD player!

4 out of 5 stars More great works from the country's best unknown duet.......1998-11-22

I have seen them in concert several times and always walk away wanting more. Their newest release is just like their others, great! They are a great kept secret and continue to produce great music, vocals/lyrics,sound, the works. Lowen and Navarro are a perfect duet. I am ready for more. This release is played at our house weekly. Keep it up guys!

5 out of 5 stars WHY are these guys not superstars?.......2006-01-15

I just recently discovered Lowen and Navarro - can't believe what I've been missing all these years! My first cd was Pendulum, which I am in love with. I immediately ordered this one, and can't get enough of it - the voices and harmonies are breathtakingly beautiful, and there's not a bad (or mediocre) song on the whole disc. I can't wait to get the rest of their collection. These guys are incredible - you can't go wrong with this cd.

      5 out of 5 stars Very Pleased.......2003-04-23

The cd was in excellent condition and I was very pleased.

      5 out of 5 stars Exquisite Harmonies, & Superb Songwriters & Musicians!!.......2001-12-02

Lowen & Navarro are wonderful songwriters & musicians & singers, with a charisma onstage that makes them much larger than life, and it's a mystery why they haven't had more success. Their voices blend in perfect harmony, and they open up their hearts and share their emotions in beautiful melodies with haunting lyrics. These guys have a simplicity and purity to their music that is exquisitely balanced by the complexity of their lyrics and the virtuosity of their guitars. There are only two of them, but they are perfectly complete just in and of themselves. The combination of these two unique and very talented people is many times the sum of its parts!

This CD is a collection of their usual fare of wonderful songs - it begins with superb and keeps them coming -- there isn't a substandard song on the entire album. The entire collection is SO GOOD, and the talent is SO STRONG, and the song writing SO WONDERFUL, and the harmony SO TOUCHING, and that combination makes this CD a MUST HAVE! The songs run the gamut of emotions that every listener can empathize with, like love, sorrow, dreams, and dashed hopes.

Not Like You is a personal favorite on this album, and it is an exquisitely lovely song that is especially touching among a collection that is no less than superlative. Just to See You is another memorable one, as is Maybe Later, but each song has a story to tell and each can individually stand on its own. Looking for a CD that doesn't disappoint, that will always offer its uplifting harmonies and timeless emotions, with wonderful musicianship? Get this one! Their Walking on a Wire CD is wonderful as well!

      5 out of 5 stars Broken Moon.......2001-11-10

As with another reviewer, this really covers ALL their material. Even though I live in Ohio, I've had the priviledge of meeting Eric and Dan in person. They write and sing from the heart. Their performances mirror a vervor and passion that comes through in this and all their recordings. The music flows and the words convey real thought, passion, and emotion.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful melodies and harmony.......2000-08-11

Fabulous collection of beautiful songs! Between the acoustic guitar and piano, the voices, and the lyrics - fantastic end results! I started with Walking on a Wire, and also have Pendulum. They just keep getting better!

      5 out of 5 stars I'd like to give it 10 stars!.......2006-07-17

My favorite Lowen and Navarro cd!!! It has the energy an spirit of a live performance, but the vocals and harmonies are flawless, the instrumentals are incredible - it truly is the best of both worlds. It's hard to believe this was just recorded as an "afterthought" by the house sound mixer. It's truly an inspiring cd, and one I never tire of listening to.

4 out of 5 stars Over-all.... They are never disapointing.......1999-07-06

This review is not just for the live wire album, it's for all of them. I have been listening to Lowen & Navarro for years and as a musician I have learned so much. These guys are under-rated and should recieve much air time so that everyone may enjoy! Thank You!!

I bought this cd to help me sleep at night-I was having some anxiety. I didn't even know what reflexology was. This cd has really helped me, I fall asleep to it every night. It has chimes, flutes, birds, just a bunch of wonderful nature sounds in it. The rhythms will become familiar to you and help you calm down better. I love the patterns the cd uses. I think this is a great cd for anyone who wants to relax at any time.
