Connecticut-based Green Linnet Records has diligently tended the flame of neo-traditional Celtic music for more than two decades, by far preceding the broad sweep of public acceptance that step-dancing musicals and Enya videos helped generate in the 1990s. While not as vast in scope as the label's 20th Anniversary Collection, Green Linnet's Joyful Noise double-CD package offers a splendid sampler of the cheerier side of the Celtic musical spectrum. Heavy on spirited reels and charming romantic odes, Joyful Noise presents 26 smartly paced tracks from 24 acts (including two each from Altan and Relativity) that nicely showcase the heart-lifting, toe-twitching allure of traditional Irish and Scottish instrumentation and vocals framed in contemporary settings. Tracks of special merit include Patrick Street's percolating, pulsating instrumental for guitar and accordion, "Music for a Found Harmonium," the Celtic bluegrass of Jerry O'Sullivan's "The Chorus Reel/Asmolean House," and the clever wordplay of Andy Stewart's Manus Lunny's "Take Her in Your Arms." A winning compilation, ideal for Green Linnet newcomers. --Terry Wood

5 out of 5 stars The Title Says it All.......2007-05-08

A real musical treat and one of my all time favorites. Great Celtic classics sung with modern sensibilities. Whether you are looking for an introduction to this great musical tradition or are adding to your collection, this one is not to be missed.

4 out of 5 stars A fine compilation of Celtic music.......2000-03-14

This is a delightful collection, a "who's who" in the world of modern Celtic music, and a great place to get started if you're curious about this kind of music. Green Linnet has made sure that the liner notes contain everything you will need to know if you choose to follow up on the music you hear and want to get the titles these pieces came from. I heard Joanie Madden's "Hyne's March" medley on Netradio and it sold me right there: it is truly "joyful noise." My only regret is they don't contain lyrics! Hey, get with it, Green Linnet!

5 out of 5 stars Makes You Wish Every Day Was St. Patrick's Day.......2000-03-06

It wasn't until after I got out of college that I paid much attention to musical genres outside rock 'n' roll. However, during the past twenty five years (as my finances permitted) I began a musical journey which lead me to discover blues, jazz, classical, country, and during the late seventies and early eighties I became fascinated by Celtic music. My favorite artists were the Bothy Band, the Tannahill Weavers, the Battlefield Band, Planxty and Silly Wizard. My collection quickly grew to nearly a hundred titles--all on vinyl.

The CD age has forced me to siwtch formats, but budget restraints prohibit my replacing all of my vinyl LPs with CDs. That's what is so great about this collection. For $13, I get nearly two hours of terrific music by a broad spectrum of the Green Linnet roster. You get the whole gamut of the Celtic experience: ballads, airs, jigs and reels.

This is guaranteed to liven any St. Patrick's Day celebration (and every other day of the year), and if this collection leaves you wanting more, for another $13 you can also get Green Linnet Records "The Twentieth Anniversary Collection." Four hours of Celtic music bliss for under $30--you can't afford not to get these. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Warning, This CD is contagious!!!.......1999-02-21

I have enjoyed the music of the Chieftians for years and I wanted to branch out to other Celtic groups. There are so many groups out there and most record store employee don't know the first thing about Celtic music. I didn't want to risk buying a CD and not like it. So, I picked this Double CD up and I haven't been able put it down in weeks. It is a Best Of...(if you will) from Green Linnet Records. Check out Patrick Street, Seamus Egan, Jerry O'Sullican, Kevin Burke, Andy M. Stewart and Altan. All great songs, all great musicians. This is a must for anyone who loves music in general.
