About the Artist
E Komo Mai (Welcome) to our slack key ohana (family). Mahalo (thank you) for your support of the rare and beautiful Hawaiian tradition of slack key guitar. When you are visiting Kauai, come share a sunset or enjoy one of our concerts. When you are away from Kauai, you can always stay in touch through our website and free email newsletters. This nahenahe (soft and sweet) music will help you stay connected to the peace and tranquility of old Hawaii. Simple beginnings are at the root of many traditions. The sunset serenade by Doug & Sandy McMaster by Hanalei Bay tradition began by just watching the sun set and playing slack key guitar. First they were joined by Betty, the dog from next door. Betty loved to go to the beach. Then Betty introduced Doug & Sandy to Edith, another neighbor, and Edith began joining them. After they made their way to the park, Edith would sit on the bench, swinging her legs with her arm wrapped snuggly around Betty as Doug & Sandy serenaded the sun to bed. The magic of community kept them coming back night after night and simple joys became celebration ritual. Visitors and locals began to discover their little sunset ohana and the community expanded reaching hearts and souls from all walks of life and all corners of the world. The magic of these experiences are documented in many a guest book. Many have tried to put it into words. One man said, "This is as close to heaven as you can get and still be alive." It's true, the vista is always magnificent and sometimes indescribably beautiful. Soft, magical, and sweet, ki ho'alu (slack key) guitar, was created by the people of Hawaii in the early 1800's. In ki ho'alu music, the hands enter into a beautiful and intricate dance through which the essences of the mystical islands of Hawaii are expressed. Slack key music is filled with mana ("spiritual force") and aloha ("divine breath, presence"). It expresses innermost feelings and honors the aina (land), creatures, events, and ancestors. As you listen, you can feel it touch you and open your heart to help you feel the essence of Hawaii. Doug McMaster has been playing slack key since a young child. Given this gift, he has the kuleana (responsibility) to ho'omau (continue the tradition) through sharing the music and stories, creating new songs in the old style, and recording. Sandy McMaster is a musician, writer, artist, and computer expert. She fell in love with the man and his music over twenty years ago. Together they are dedicated to sharing the beauty of ki ho'alu and the islands creating Aloha Plenty experiences for all. They have released 4 instrumental slack key CDs (Hanalei Sunset, Kauai Homecoming, In A Land Called Hanalei, and Island of Peace), an audio music documentary (Slack Key Story), and a Hanalei Sunsets Screensaver. By touching the hearts of visitors to the islands, they help spread the aloha spirit throughout the world.
Product Description
200 years ago in Hawaii... there were no plantations, no ranches, no missionaries, no visitor industry, no hotels, no radio, no multitracking, no singing (only chanting), no overdubbing, no lyrics to engage the talking head, no record company formulas... no entertainment industry...
There were a few Hawaiian men and women who were the original recipients of a "new" instrument called a guitar. Sitting in the peaceful splendor of their environment, they created a unique art form called ki ho'alu -- Hawaiian slack key guitar. They were inspired by simple, natural wonders... the little crabs skittering to and fro on the beach, the moon shimmering off the deep seas, the mist swirling around the mountains, the honu (sea turtles) riding the giant rolling waves, the soft whispering tradewinds, the ua lani pili (rains from the near heavens), ...
Island of Peace, the newest release by Doug & Sandy McMaster, is ki ho'alu in this real old style. Nothing more, nothing less. Enhanced to include a FREE video, screensaver, photo gallery, and more when you put the CD in your computer. The video is a little taste of the magical sunsets by Hanalei Bay on the mystical island of Kauai.
One of our favorite tracks is the title song, Island of Peace, which was a gift from a baby humpback whale that was born in the middle of Hanalei Bay on February 18, 2002 as we and our sunset slack key 'ohana watched on and serenaded the sun to bed. The name Island of Peace was the gift of a visiting monk.
Island of Peace,Doug & Sandy McMaster,Aloha Plenty,Soft, sweet, soothing instrumental slack key guitar in the real old style with the live sound of Hanalei Bay, Kauai. In your computer, you can also watch a sunset 'ohana video, sunset photo gallery, and download a screensaver.

The Irish Tenors' fourth album sees the trio of Anthony Kearns, Ronan Tynan, and Finbar Wright paying a sentimental musical tribute to Ellis Island, the hallowed landmark that met the majority of immigrants entering the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. Needless to say, the Tenors' repertoire this time around is full of reflective ballads of love, loss, and homesickness, including the original "Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears" that opens this disc. Throughout this studio recording, the Irish Tenors are in fine form and backed by a soft-hued orchestra that never interferes with their soaring vocals. Traditional tunes include "My Wild Irish Rose," "How Are Things in Glocca Mora," and, of course, "Danny Boy" (the last sung by all three tenors, with refreshingly simple solo piano accompaniment). Thankfully, the threesome didn't forget that the immigrants had fun, too, as evidenced by some lighthearted fare; "The Courtin' Medley" features the Tenors at their most upbeat and comical. Ellis Island is a moving aural portrait of the struggles and triumphs of the Irish émigrés and a must-have for fans of the threesome. Newcomers may enjoy the Tenors' debut disc even more, as the earlier live album is a slightly more upbeat and spirited affair. --Jason Verlinde

Three Cheers for the Irish!!!.......2007-05-30
A glorious concert in a historic setting, with all involved in top notch form. Finbar finds a great old Johnny Cash number, Ronan sings a Glocka
Mora to end all, and Anthony Kearns sings murderously difficult versions
of Macushla and The Croppy Boy like an angel. And their Courtin' and Irish
Medleys, and their "Nation Once Again" trios are simply glorious glees.
With the benefit of a grand theme, this is perhaps the best, and best balanced, of all their programs.
Ellis Island song brings tears to my eyes.......2006-03-17
This magical album crosses oceans and centuries and puts me in touch with my Irish ancestry. The title song tells a story similar to my greatgrandmother's and even though I've heard it many times now, I still weep for her.
How Are Things In Glocca Morra?.......2004-04-16
Long a fan of Irish music, I have turned to a series of artists to satiate my appetite. Bing Crosby and John McCormick have been succeeded by the Irish Tenors.
This CD has a bit more of an Irish American theme as "Isle Of Hope, Isle Of Tears" and "God Bless America" illustrate. Interspersed among these tunes are traditional Irish tunes such as "Macushla" and "Croppy Boy", along with newer songs, such as "The Green Fields Of France" and "How are Things In Glocca Morra?"
The singing is excellent, the words understandable. I appreciate the inclusion the lyrics of the songs contained on the insert of the cover. These are songs you will want to learn, whose stories you will want to research. I have. Listen again and again!

The Best Historical CD Ever!.......2003-11-21
I think this is best CD since Live in Belfast! it also has 2 songs not included on the video! it's a unique album of how the immigration to Ellis Island and New York turned out. It also has songs of the war such as The Green Fields Of France (The Best One) or, the croppy boy. I would recommend this to anyone!

Customer Reviews:
A Great British collection.......2005-10-05
This CD features several particular composers who have written pieces of music that are quintessentially British: Jeremiah Clarke, George Frideric Handel, John Stanley, John Eccles, Henry Purcell, William Corbett, Edward Elgar, Arthur Sullivan, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst and Thomas Arne. The pieces here are triumphant, celebrating that particular period of Empire when the British ruled vastly such that the sun never set upon it - one of the key elements of such triumphant music-making, particularly for the time, was the use of brass and trumpet. Some of the later composers included here draw on inspirations from these earlier times.
One of the featured performers on this collection is John Wallace, who was principal trumpet of the Philharmonia Orchestra since the 1970s; he founded the brass ensemble, the Wallace Collection, ten years later in 1986. In 2002, he became principal of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, Scotland, and the Wallace Collection gave their last performance shortly thereafter. However, the Wallace Collection lives on in performances on CD such as this one, performed with William Boughton and the English String Orchestra. Other tracks are performed by Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by Alexander Faris and the English String Orchestra conducted by Stephen Darlington.
Pieces here are very familiar to anyone with an interested in British national composition -- pieces such as the Water Music by Handel are very famous, as are Holst's 'Planets' and Sullivan's (of Gilbert & Sullivan) 'Pinafore'; other pieces, such as Clarke's 'Trumpet Voluntary', are similarly famous even if their composers did not achieve the 'brand recognition' that Handel did. All of the composers here came from the period spanning the late 1600s to the late 1700s, when music was as often written for music halls and public performances as it was for royal events and commissions.
The performances here are uniformly upbeat and well played, with little by way of blemish save the occasional drop and surge in levels (as often becomes the case when recording music with sharp brass elements).
One can envision theatres full of people waving Union Jacks while this plays, and many of the pieces have a quality about them that speaks directly to the time and place of Britain.
If you like Baroque music, buy it; it is excellent.......2005-06-29
If you like Baroque music, buy this 2 CD's BOX SET; it is excellent. Clarke, Handel, Purcell, Corbet and so on are very well played. The orchestration is very good, the quality of recording is excellent. Remember that Baroque music uses mainly a single trumpet, few other brass instruments, some woodwinds and very few drums. It is very easy, elegant and pleasant to listen. When I got married in 2003, I have chosen only Baroque music for the ceremony and the banquet because Baroque music is so lovely, so delicate and so sweet. Even if you have never heard or you think that you have never heard Baroque music, buy this CD; I tell you, you will not regret your choice because it is really an excellent CD. You have my words.

Without a doubt, the most phenomenal collection of piano music I have ever heard. Not in the same minimalist vein as other Riley work, can only classify this music in one way; Riley music. Beautiful, haunting, robust. The first time I heard it, I cried.

As cliche as rock gets.......2000-01-30
What was O.C.S. thinking? Obviously they weren't.. The title track's lyrics will make any poet wince. As much as I respect the musicianship of this fine U.K. band, they have a marketing team as bad as any in rock & roll [including Ben Harper's friends at Virgin}. For as good as this band is [The Circle, Hundred Mile High City, Hello Monday, etc] they can't seem to choose the right singles to release in the U.S. market, so they've just given up. Genius. It's called market research.. Take a page from Barry Gordy at Motown.. But pass on this single if you have any sort of intellect whatsoever..

Album Description
2007 CD single by the highly praised UK singer/songwriter, taken from his album The Forever House. Features 'Peace By Myself' and 'Crazy'. Island.
Album Details
Equally Influenced by Hercule Poirot (Moustache, Pre War Fascination) as Freddy Mercury (Moustache, Consummate Showman) and with a Bowie-esque Performance on the Hazily Rich Single "Peace by Yourself", Toms Really is Quite Unlike Any Other Singer/Songwriter in the UK. He Tells the Kind of Tales that Whisk You Into Another World, Fulfilling the Classic and Oft Forgotten Secret of the Best Pop Music - Escapism. His Ability to Blend Sublime Balladry with Sunshine Melodies and Some Heavily Experimental Sonic Curveballs is Borne Out of his Love for Decades of Music that Takes in his Gran's Collection of Pre-war Jazz Through to the Likes of Supertramp, Sir Elton and his Dad's 70's Prog Pomp.

Customer Reviews:
Very beautiful voice.......2005-04-29
I have listened to many good baritones but Gabriel Suovanen is overwhelmingly the best of them. His voice is somehow so beautiful. He has lived whole his life in Sweden but yet he sings all the Finnish songs correctly, with a lot of emotion. I am not sure if he considers himself Swedish or Finnish but that doesn't matter; no other male singer has sung these songs so beautifully. "Oi muistatko vielä sen virren" is my favourite song; I listen it again and again and never get tired. I also enjoy the other Merikanto-songs. Yet most of the Sibelius songs are less enjoyable because of the Swedish language; I don't like it. "Demanten på marssnön" with simply piano backing is somehow even better than Jussi Björlings too massive orchestra-backed version. The Finnish folk songs that I have never heard before, are also very nice!
I recommend this cd to anyone who wants to familiarize himself with Finnish art songs. If you already know these songs and don't like them, I still recommend it. I also used to dislike Finnish songs but after listening to Suovanen, I totally changed my mind.
sounds like a younger Fischer-Dieskau.......2001-05-06
This album of Finnish folk songs is amazing. I had not heard of Gabriel Suovanen before I listened to this cd, but at only twenty-six years old, he has a lot of potential. His voice sounds very much like a younger Fischer-Dieskau. Some of the repertoire is not my favorite, but extremely enjoyable to listen to because of Suovanen's beautiful voice. The Sibelius songs are definitely the highlight of the album.
