Amazon.com essential recording
Paul Simon's third solo album unifies the varied threads running through its predecessors--confessional ballads, wily story songs, agnostic spirituals and snapshots of modern life, circa 1975, are extensions of the models on his self-titled debut and--There Goes Rhymin' Simon. Here, Simon and producer Phil Ramone establish a more cohesive, explicitly urban setting that burnishes the artist's acoustic folk accents to spotlight his sophistication as an inventive composer and, as always, deft wordsmith. Included is his last great collaboration with Art Garfunkel, the bittersweet "My Little Town," a pop gospel romp with Phoebe Snow on "Gone at Last," and the sly adulterer's solution of "Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover" (arguably the antithesis of Willie Dixon's classic "29 Ways"), along with the tender "I Do It for Your Love" and the woozy, dissolute "Have a Good Time." Best of all, of course, is the brilliant title song, shifting from anecdotal verse to soaring bridge and colored by keening strings and Phil Woods's knowing tenor-sax solo. Simon was crazy, like a fox. --Sam Sutherland

correction to the editorial review.......2007-06-22
Track 1 (the title track) of this album has perhaps one of the greatest jazz/fusion tenor sax solos ever recorded by the late virtuoso Michael Brecker (RIP). As a s sax player, I cant sit here idily and read this aggregious error. Phil Woods is a great contemporary saxophonist, but he did not record this solo.
Slippery slopes.......2007-05-31
One of the neat things about living today is you can turn back to yesterday and plan tomorrow by accessing anything you want now in music in seconds....if you have money...so I thought of Slip Sliding Away (actually just a line with Delores in it-listen-) and down loaded the album to hear tonight as quick as you can hit the button on your bank account.
Of course being a day away from payday and slightly over drawn this buying of song will earn me a fee and another massive reminder of "who is the real boss around here." Slip sliding away. So go to Finland, leave your wife to go it alone and expect to be immortalized on return. I may order two more tonight. I kind of want that Aja download..and a Taj Mahal. And what about Graceland? Slip and slide right away...
This was a favorite album, listening I'm back in 1975-76 and I know exactly what I felt. Music is amazing this way. Feeling. Transported to a long streak of bad luck tune...pray it's gone at last. Man. I had long streak..pray it's gone at last....love the trip listening to memories to try to lift out of pain today.
This remix has a terrific couple songs at the end too (demo version whatever that is). Rhythm is great. Not the Ramones but I saw them too, and Simon in New York I think it was 1977 or maybe 80?, it was in the height of this, saw a Saturday Night Live...live.
In that time this album was so much fun to listen to, wistful, urban, interior, about love failed, changing. Of course I was young, 18. My daughters age now. What did I know then? Wow, we seem so very different. She's so very smart, choosing, charting. At that time I wasn't going to get married or involved, ever. Oh we are kind of alike in those words.
Hop on the bus Gus, drop off the key, slip out the back Jack, you don't need to discuss much, get yourself free. Running days....days I got around to sing and live. And here I am listening to these tunes some for the first time in 15 years. I'd forgotten My Little Town, hanging shirts in the dirty breeze...such a great tune about growing up in nowhere in the times I became me. My little town, just hanging your life on the line ...black rainbows. God what writing. The lack of imagination in a small town has never changed. I sang this to move away and beyond the dead and dying dreams I had...
I Do It For Your Love was a tune I love to hear others cover, but listening today I remember it was sweet to listen to Simon. Too much... we were married on a rainy day. The sky was yellow, grass was gray. I do it for your love....you can love that writing too. I recall all those early married years living in a migrant town in a shanty where I saw the dirt through the floorboards. And lost all my jewelry in a plastic bag to a break in.Worth only the memories. By the time I was married nine years and owned a mattress and a table, and three kids. Made the love fade, life so hard getting all the degrees after working all day and trying to do it all....on a shoe string I suppose. The orange bled the blue. Sting of reason, splash of tears. I do it for your love. Beautiful tune. Like listening to Bill Evans lay it out.
Do you like harmonica lilting through your head, listen to Night Game....I recall on this album Sanborn, Brecker, Bob James, Ralph Mc Donald, Grady Tate, Steve Gadd, Phoebe Snow...but you know poor memory... I mostly enjoy listening which I'm going to do now. Was this really the reason, "I like to sleep with the window open and you keep the window closed", so goodbye? Yeah, it's as good as any reason. Sad. I recall this is an 'after a marriage ends release', is that right...it fades in my memory. Goodbye was it?
This beautiful bed of stones holding Jerusalem...I'd forgotten it's here too. I was playing this one night years ago, over the December break...alone in my tiny apartment, no food...a friend stopped over just as I was singing this out (giving them a scary show I suppose) they'd brought me a food care package. That I was singing this ballad at the time struck me as something very like proving you have connections to universe...call of this song in the dark ...we tumble and fall through no fault of our own....never catching our stars......but times seem to leave me wondering listening tonight....his is a tune I can almost not take, bone felt, still. Very beautiful.
So now I'm slip sliding away. Again. Good thing we can sing. It's about all you've got in the dark. A day tomorrow, I lie in bed and think of things that might have been....have A Good Time those that can. Will.
Good memories. In a year with great music this got a lot of awarding. And I still enjoy it 'cause awards are a sure killer.
A MUST HAVE!!!.......2007-04-02
For serious Paul Simon fans only!!! This cd showcases the first glimpse of his musical genius!!! Still a relevant cd 30 yrs after it was first released!!!
Paul Simon in a different direction.......2006-10-29
The best way to describe this album would be "melodically pleasing and mellow". In fact, the mellow atmosphere combined with the excellent songwriting will show you that Paul Simon really is a great singer and songwriter. He can do it all, folks. Buy this collection for a completely consistent album.
Not crazy about it but worth it for the already converted.......2006-07-14
This album had a few too many low-key cuts that wafted by without a lot of impact. I love Simon's stuff (and not just the "hits", for instance "St. Judy's Comet" is one of my favorite songs of his..) but sometimes he veers a bit into pretension. He's at his best when he's doing stuff that COULD be hits..if they weren't a little "too smart" for the room.
HIGHLIGHTS:
The title cut picks up a nice smoky jazz ambience thanks to jazzers like Michael Brecker adding a tasty sax solo and the string and woodwind arrangement by Bob James heightening the drama of the tune while not plunging it into melodrama. Perhaps the last great pairing with Art Garfunkel, "My Little Town" is another high point as Simon recalls his childhood in a one horse town ("And after it rains/There's a rainbow/And all of the colors are black/It's not that the colors aren't there/It's just imagination they lack"). The duo share production chores on the song with Phil Ramone (Billy Joel's producer). Crisp military snare drumming from Steve Gadd guides cheater how-to "50 Ways to Leave your Lover" which became a #1 for Simon. Simon hooks up with Phoebe Snow on the gospel-esque barnburner "Gone at Last" with gospel's Jessy Dixon Singers along for the ride. The lazy musical backing for "Have a Good Time" perfectly enhances the 'take it as it comes' hedonism. ("I've been loving and loving and loving/I'm exhausted from loving so well/I should go to bed/But a voice in my head/Says 'Ah, what the h**l')
LOWS:
"Night Game" is a finely etched word painting but it just never grabs me musically. I can't decide if Simon is genuinely desiring Jerusalem in "Silent Eyes" or if it's an ironic lament. It's just another one that 'lays there' for me.
BOTTOM LINE:
If you're already a fan you'll probably like it but if you've heard NEGOTIATIONS AND LOVE SONGS (Simon's greatest hits) and you want to go on from there, I'd try THERE GOES RHYMIN' SIMON next or GRACELAND and RHYTHM OF THE SAINTS for his world music excursions.

S. T. .......2006-06-01
SUICIDAL!!!!!! This was my favorite band in the mid to late 80's. They were so different from the "hair" metal bands of the time. Their music is original and great. I still listen to them quite often. They are in my top 20.
One of the best albums and bands.......2005-12-09
Well lets just say that it became kinda hard to listen to this cd because of Mike's new voice. It didnt really cut it for this one. He really screwed up songs like I Saw Your Mommy and others. I think they did this because they didnt have that much access to the first album. I would only buy it if you're a huge ST fan
Very good but..........2005-01-03
Most of these songs were too damn short I say like less than a minute or so but they were aweseoms too. I like this band mike muirs song of word lyrics were pretty funny in institutionalized that was one of the best songs from this album that was not too short. Like I said all these songs were awesome so I gave them all 3 stars and took 2 out because they were way too short and thats kind of a waste of $10 dollars don't you think?
5 Star Material,5 Star Execution,5 Stars for balls to do it.......2004-10-20
I bought Suicidal Tendencies self titled debut when it first came out and way blown away by the band's intensity and musicianship. When I first heard that Cyco Miko and the boys were planning on re-recording this classic, I was skeptical (to say the least). I'm what you would call a metal/punk purist. However, Still Cyco After all These Years upholds the mighty tradition of Suicidal Tendencies and even strengthens their legacy as punk metal pioneers. I applaude Mike Muir for having the foresight and the balls to re-record these classics...and I do mean CLASSICS. Just look at the track listings: Institutionalized, I Shot the Devil, Subliminal, Two-Sided Politics, I Saw Your Mommy...the list goes on and on. This album just takes a tighter, faster Suicidal unit and does these songs even faster and better. For production values alone, this version completely shines over their classic debut. Overall, Still Cyco is a strong buy for any metal/punk fan but an absolute must-own for ST fans. Highly Recommended.
kinda sad.......2003-07-23
i dunno...maybe Mike isn't/didn't get any cash off these songs the first time or something....wouldn't be surprised. whatever the reason/s, this album frankly doesn't work very well at all. the new versions [take] the life out of some of these songs, and even the ones that manage to survive the process sound like they're being played by a compentent but uninspired cover band....which is kinda what's happened, here. ST's first & best is what you need...remakes rarely improve on the originals.

For over three decades Eddy Arnold possessed greater staying power than any Nashville megastar, with a total of 67 top-ten singles and 28 number ones, several topping the charts for months. To their credit, RCA--Arnold's label for nearly his entire career--accord him a respect that few other major labels show to past country greats who once enhanced their profits. That's why the 87-year-old Arnold's return to the studio for album #100 is nothing less than courageous. His producer, legendary Nashville eccentric Cowboy Jack Clement, combines low-key acoustic accompaniment with vintage material, including a remake of Arnold's 1956 hit "You Don't Know Me" and Roger Miller's "King of the Road." While Arnold imparts class, dignity, and youthful spirit to every tune, even this vocal master isn't exempt from aging's inevitable toll on every human voice. Hearing him valiantly struggle to achieve what once seemed effortless is profoundly moving and occasionally painful. Nonetheless, his magnificent legacy, established decades ago, remains the gold standard for which he'll ultimately be remembered. --Rich Kienzle
Customer Reviews:
Sad to say but this is an album that never should have been released........2006-03-07
When I think of the great Eddy Arnold I fondly recall all of those great country ballads he recorded during his heydey in the 1950's and 1960's. Tunes like "You Don't Know Me", "Make The World Go Away", "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye" and "What's He Doin' In My World" are timeless classics that I still enjoy listening to today. I guess that is why I was so uncomfortable sampling Eddy's brand new 2005 release "After All These Years". I assumed that in spite of the fact that Eddy Arnold is 87 years old now he still had something left in the tank. Unfortunately for Eddy, RCA records and his loyal fans this is simply not the case. I sampled "After All These Years" because I was curious to see if the old master could pull it off. After all, I have heard any number of black artists who still sound terrific well into their 80's. But Eddy Arnold's voice is a shell of it's former self. He can no longer hold a note. There is really not one track on the entire album that I can get enthused about. To me this disc was a disaster.
According to the liner notes "After All These Years" was the 100th album that Eddy Arnold has recorded. That is certainly quite an achievement. Still, in my view it is really too bad that the decision was made to release this CD. I would avoid it at all costs. If you happen to be looking for a good collection of Eddy's hit recordings might I suggest BMG's 2003 release "Ultimate Eddy Arnold". That is a disc I am sure you will enjoy!
Don't expect Eddy to be Eddy.......2006-01-30
This could be worth a final chapter to your Eddy Arnold collection.
However, don't expect the Eddy Arnold of almost
90 to be the one we have memories of.
Maybe two cuts are good...the rest find Eddy unable to
hit the low...and some high notes.
The Best Of Eddy.......2005-12-04
I listen to this album over and over. His singing reminds me of times gone by. Eddy does a superb job on each song. It's not a young Eddy Arnold, but it's the best of Todays Eddy Arnold.
A Very Rewarding CD.......2005-10-27
At 87, it's not surprising that Eddy Arnold doesn't sing as good as he did when he was 47 doing "What's He Doing in My World?" and "Make Me World Go Away." What is surprising is how good he does sound! He actually sounds better on this CD than the previous two or three CDs done a few years ago. I'm so glad Eddy and RCA dedided to do this CD.
The songs are reflective, befitting a man at the end of his career. Eddy sings in a deeper voice now and the songs are tailored for a lower range and in fact, a couple of them are too low. The best song on the CD is the opening song, "Old Porch Swing", which poignantly describes several generations of a family. "I've Been Down Some Roads" is a strong cut and "After All These Years" and "To Life" are touching odes to a long life. "Don't She Look Good" is a fun song and "When I Dream" is a very nice male version of Crystal Gayle's hit, although the words "put on my makeup" should have been changed.
If you appreciate the quantity and quality of Eddy Arnold's work for 60 years (!), this is a must-own CD.
Last Recording from this Great Artist.......2005-10-14
I must say I listened to this last recording by Eddy Arnold with a tear in my eye. I have been a fan of this unique artist for the last 30 years. At 87 years old - he can still sing a song - not like he did 40 years ago - but what artist can sing at his age? How many of today's stars will be around and performing when they ar 87 - probably none. This is a last recording from a great and unique singer that we will not see the likes of again.I was moved by his abilty to communicate every word of a song and still make one feel he is singing just for you. This is a must have recording.

5 Stars Aren't Enough!.......2002-07-26
Like all Foster and Allen CDs, this is an outstanding listening
experience. Most of the songs are "love songs" and wonderful to
listen to. My personal favorite is "After the Ball."
After all These Years I Have Discovered Them!.......2001-08-21
Although this is not a new cd,it is new to me.Several of the tracks were being given a lot of playtime on a local radio station. On the basis of that I got the album and was not disappointed. It more than lived up to my expectations. The album is timeless and each track will leave you moved."I Don't Know Why I Love You, But I Do" and "After All These Years" make the entire album worthwhile, but, then, the other ten tracks are equally as good. These two artists from Ireland are just outstanding. This album will please just about anyone. I am delighted that at this late I discovered this talented duo.
Excellent.......2000-06-30
This is simply a masterpiece. No other words can possibly describe it. I urge you to buy it now.
This one's a keeper !.......2000-05-13
I found this CD by accident and ordered it for "After The Ball", my mother's favorite song. To my surprise and delight, I realized that I had never heard anything but the chorus, whereas this version tells a complete story. What a find! After listening to the entire CD, I know I will treasure it always. Track 1: "Somewhere My Love" is truly a delight. Track 2: "I Don't Know Why I Love You, But I Do" is excellent. Track 5: "When I Dream" is the best version I've heard. Track 11: "Still" is great. There's not a bad song in the bunch. Every track is wonderfully produced--a perfect blend of vocal harmony and music. I plan to buy other albums by these artists. My advise ... Don't miss this one !
one of the most touching and beautiful cds I have heard!.......1999-09-21
The music and words seem to be written for Foster and Allen. The quality is excellent.
