Warner Bros. did with the CD release of the 1970 vinyl LP 10 Years Together: Best of Peter, Paul & Mary what every label should do with CD reissues of vinyl compilations. They took into account the longer length of CDs and added tracks. The original release of 10 smash hits has been fleshed out here with three additional tracks, including a melodic take on Dylan's Basement Tapes rarity "Too Much of Nothing." Otherwise, it's hits and nothing but hits, ranging from definitive folk interpretations ("If I Had a Hammer") to pop ("I Dig Rock 'n' Roll Music") to Dylan and Gordon Lightfoot covers that compete with the originals and first brought such material to the mainstream. Only "Cruel War" is missing. --Bill Holdship

I'm sure that all of us who remember PP&M welcome a CD reissue if only because we won't have to listen to the scratches and the skips that a well-loved record album is burdened by. But I'm surprised at the Amazon review posted ahead of all the "amateurs" because there are NO NEW TRACKS on the CD. The record has 13 tracks, not 10, as the review so prominently claims. I agree with the other amateur reviewers who would like to hear some of the other PP&M songs added, such as "This Land is Your Land" and "Where Have all the Flowers Gone." And it's understandable that all the recording company wanted to do was reissue the original. But please, Amazon, don't advertise a product as something it's not.
A Classic of American Folk Music.......2006-10-08
I still have this on vinyl, but just never bother with the stereo anymore. I pounced on the CD and popped it into my player, so once again I can relive the sound that meant so much to me in my college days. It's still a mellow blending of voices and a great selection of songs.
You get your classic folk tunes (Blowin' in the Wind and If I Had a Hammer), plus 60s songs like Too Much of Nothing and I Dig Rock and Roll Music. I love their version of Lemon Tree and you just have to have Puff the Magic Dragon.
A marvelous album!
38 minutes of Greatest Hits.......2006-01-18
First released on LP in 1970, this greatest hits album contains several of the big hits by Peter, Paul, and Mary, the folk trio from the '60's whose classic works include "Puff the Magic Dragon" and their covers of Pete Seeger's "If I Had a Hammer," John Denver's "Leaving on a Jet Plane," and Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind." The group's sound consisted of simple, feel-good, peace-loving, almost naive, harmonies with spare instrumentation (usually just guitars and acoustic bass) and without much of a hint of an edge (realizing that some of their music was "protest music" in spirit and assuming for the moment that "Puff!" wasn't about lighting up a doobie). This formula garnered them a loyal following in the '60's and no doubt has today's greying listeners harkening back to those good old days. Anyone who was a fan and hasn't heard them for years will find this a warm reminder of the classic tunes and times.
It's always a bit difficult to review a Greatest Hits album -- people always quibbling about what songs in their opinion were unjustly left out and which they could have done without. I always think that's pointless, but I can't resist jumping on the bandwagon this time... True, this CD release improves on the earlier LP version by adding 3 tracks, but the total playing time still only comes to less than 38 minutes. That just doesn't cut it for me in the age of the CD format. So, what would I add? Well, how about "This Land is Your Land," "Where Have All The Flowers Gone," or "Kumbaya," "Michael Row the Boat Ashore," "Down By The Riverside," or even "Because All Men Are Brothers." Ah, fair enough... if I'd wanted those tracks, I should have purchased either the 2CD collection, "Around the Campfire" or the newly released and remastered "The Very Best of Peter, Paul, and Mary." Don't get me wrong, "Ten Years Together" is a decent album with some classic hits from PPM, but if you want something more complete and a better value for your $, check out either of those two albums first -- I wish I had (and I wish I'd read a review that made this clear). Then again, with "The Very Best..." available now, you should be able to pick up "Ten Years Together" for a dollar or two.
Crisp American folk music.......2005-10-16
A music collection that contains classical numbers from the classics of American folk music.
A collection that also makes me cruise to the 60's, both with its melodies and lyrics. The themes are socially and politically oriented making them even more universal.

Rounder compiled this superb 50-song set to serve as an introduction to bluegrass in general and to their own catalog in particular. Obvious marketing motives aside, the collection has few weaknesses and offers a broad look at the ever-morphing genre. Perhaps more than any other label, Rounder gave exposure to the renegade progressive and "newgrass" musicians who worshipped the style despite the fact that they weren't from the mountains. Folks like David Grisman, Bill Keith, Tony Trischka, and Bela Fleck push the music in new directions while others such as Del McCoury, Don Stover, James King, Jim & Jesse, and Vern Williams represent more-traditional concerns. Still others--Tony Rice, David Grier, J.D. Crowe, Nashville Bluegrass Band among them--adeptly fuse elements of tradition and innovation. This collection also highlights the important contributions of female artists including Hazel and Alice, Laurie Lewis, Claire Lynch, and Alison Krauss. --Marc Greilsamer

If you're a died-in-the-tie-dye fan, you've probably already heard a tape of this show and will be pleased to know that here it sounds amazing; the entire three hour performance is included, mixed and mastered off of original 16-track live master recordings. If you're not already a Deadhead, Live at the Cow Palace: New Years Eve 1976 is an excellent encapsulation of mid '70s Dead. Recorded in-between 1975's invigorating Blues for Allah and 1977's dreadfully myopic Terrapin Station, it's eminently preferable to the live album Steal Yr Face, and goes a long way towards showing that the critically-maligned Godchaux era had a lot going for it. A few of the songs lumber a bit, but there's a real funkiness and versatility to this segment of the band's career that they never really had at any other time. Several stages of the band's career converge, such that the elastically funky version of the late '70s Dead, the almost jazz-fusion Dead of the early '70s, and the soft cowboy folk sound of 1970 of are all here. Beautiful ending for 1976.......2007-05-29
First 2007 release of the Grateful Dead (I hope there's more to come). "Live at the Cow Palace" features the complete show The Dead gave on New Year's Eve 1976. Nicely "digipaked", this set also includes a nice booklet with interesting liner notes which focus on (of course) the band, but also on the history of the Cow Palace. These notes point out the bad acoustics of this big hall, but forget about that for this set is beautifuly recorded and the sound quality is simply superb. All the instruments are clearly heard and the sound is certainly warm and tremendously enjoyable.
As for the performance, The Dead were surely inspired that evening. Let's take a brief look at the contents of this 3-cd set.
The first set, as it has happened with The Dead before, proves to be the less interesting. It starts off with "Promised Land", which is nice but doesn't say much. "Bertha" is played more slowly than the classic "Skull and Roses" version. "Mama Tried", in contrast, is played in a more hurried pace than on the aforementioned record. Anyway, there are both nice to hear. "They Love Each Other" proves to be a real treat. It includes a very strong piano solo by Keith Godchaux, and the band sounds very tight. Unfortunately, the results are not the same with "Looks Like Rain", where the group make a couple of easily detectable mistakes, apart from sounding uncomfortable with the song. A nice "Deal" brings the things back together and set the mood for a magnificent "Playing In The Band" which includes, as you can imagine, an extended, pure-beauty jam where everybody flies freely.
1977 started in Winterland with "Sugar Magnolia", and the second CD kicks off. A faster-than-usual and splendid-as-always "Eyes of the World" continues and segues into one of the most wonderful "Wharf Rat" versions I ever heard (a song that is naturally beautiful made even more beautiful. Can you picture that?). After this sonic Eden, we are taken back to reality with some interesting yet more earthy "Good Lovin'" and "Samson and Delilah". "Scarlet Begonias" closes the second CD in its usual relaxed, lovely and cheerful manner.
The last CD takes off with "Around And Around", which usually sounds (to these ears) just plain fair. This version is not the case, embellished with a effective rhythm change in the middle and a fantastic segue into a outstanding "Help On The Way/Slipknot!". Jerry Garcia expands his talent all over, and the band enters into an ethereal landscape where he can speak freely with them in a classic telephatic-empathic-Grateful-Dead-type manner. All this beauty derives in a very short "Drums" and the time comes for a pleasant "Not Fade Away" to distract the listener's mind before a sublime and touching "Morning Dew". "One More Saturday Night" follows and the show finds its proper ending with "Uncle John's Band" (including some usual lyrics confusion) and a simply wonderful "We Bid You Goodnight".
Well, top-notch Dead, warts and all.
A great night of a tremendously talented ensemble.

Welcome new release from the Dead archive.......2007-05-20
There was a period in the late 90s up to a few years ago that the Dead released live albums from their rich back catalogue, including the seminole "Dick's Picks" releases. Things have been much quieter in the last 2-3 years. Among other things, the Dead have turned over further releases from their back catalogue to the well-respected Rhino label.
"Live At the Cow Palace, New Year's Eve, 1976" (3CDs, 22 tracks, 191 min.) brings the 12/31/76 show in its entirety, and the band is generally in great doings. Contrary to many other Dead fans, I've always enjoyed the Godchaux era, and this is as good as any from that era. Set one is somewhat slow in building up, but I love the 20+ min. blowout of Playing In the Band. CD2 brings a great Sugar Magnolia>Eyes of the World>Wharf Rat>Good Loving, but the real jewel on this set is CD3, with a great Slipknot!>Drums>Not Fade Away. Uncle John's Band in the encore is the cherry on top of the cake. Just an great evening of great music all around.
I have usually been impressed with the job Rhino has done with reissued and back catalogue issues, and they don't disappointed me here. Excellent packaging, great liner notes, pictures, it's all here. Bottom line: is this an "essential" live recording in the Dead's output? Probably not, but it certainly is a most enjoyable and welcome addition to the live catalogue of the Dead.

It can be a dangerous proposition when an artist decides to challenge himself. Ambition means precious little without the talent to back it up. Idaho's Josh Ritter needn't worry: he's willed himself to great heights on The Animal Years, his fourth full-length and first for a major label. By combining his mysterious, knotty lyrics with straightforward melodies, nuanced, sensitive arrangements, and an unassuming vocal style, he's hit upon a spellbinding formula that confidently stretches the boundaries of folk music. Perhaps his most inspired move was in hiring producer Brian Deck, who's helped artists as diverse as Modest Mouse and Iron & Wine take great artistic leaps. Deck gives Ritter a huge, immediate, but not overwhelming presence, and he adds just the right touches--a gentle mandolin, an ominous piano, a swirling organ, marching drums--at just the right times. The album's centerpiece is the fire-and-brimstone "Thin Blue Flame," a slowly building, nearly 10-minute epic with a simple two-chord motif and portentous, surreal lyrical flurries. It's unfortunate that this was intended to be Ritter's breakout album. The production is more slick but something is lost from the performance as a result. Or maybe the songs just aren't as good as those on "Hello Starling" -- those inspired me as a songwriter; these are just mildly pleasant... "Girl in the War" and "Good Man" are excellent, though.

Good Album.......2007-03-09
This is a good album that grows on you. "Girl in the War" should be an modern anthem. Don't know if it mainstream enough for that. I have heard this guy compared to Springsteen, though there is a Jackson Browne flavor also. I tend to like a more prominent lead guitar sound, so I can't quite say he is on par with Springsteen yet. Some of the more up-tempo songs have a driving drum beat, but they need a stronger lead guitar presence. But maybe he just wants to be a singer/songwriter without the heavier sound. The album is very evocative and worth buying.

Manuel Barrueco is one of the best guitarists I've ever heard. Listen to his own arrangement of Albeniz's Suite Española and you'll have trouble believing it's only two hands on one guitar. But Barrueco doesn't use his technique to show off. He's a solid musician, as expressive in Bach as in Villa- Lobos. He also makes transcriptions that respect the origins of the music. This is a wide-ranging guitar collection, but all the music is worth hearing, especially in performances like these. The disc is one of the best bargains among all guitar recordings, and Vox's recordings still sound like a guitar. --Leslie Gerber

Not much else really to say about this. It is a collection of brilliant interpretations and the guitar has the most amazing sound I've ever heard on a recording. You will find yourself almost spiritually bound to share this recording with any classical guitar playing friends and aficionados.

I was browsing Amazon, shopping for gifts, and when I listened to the snippets of this, I couldn't resist ordering it for myself. It's a 3CD set of beautiful, varied music played by a brilliantly skilled and sensitive master. Barrueco has an extraordinary touch that seems perfect for each piece, from Bach to Paganini to Villa-Lobos. Anyone who likes classical guitar would treasure this set.
The "cool school" of guitar playing.......2006-10-26
This three CD collection is a reissue of Cuban born virtuoso Manuel Barrueco's early Vox LPs, recorded in the late 1970s to early 1980s. Included in this set is his stunning performance of selections by Spanish composers Isaac Albéniz and Enrique Granados. This 1978 Albéniz/Granados recording is perhaps the greatest example of what I call the "cool school" of guitar playing, eschewing color and warmth in favor of restraint, taste, and note perfect execution. One complaint: in this reissue VoxBox inexplicably spread the Albéniz/Granados selections over three CDs.

Paul Simon's third solo album unifies the varied threads running through its predecessors--confessional ballads, wily story songs, agnostic spirituals and snapshots of modern life, circa 1975, are extensions of the models on his self-titled debut and--There Goes Rhymin' Simon. Track 1 (the title track) of this album has perhaps one of the greatest jazz/fusion tenor sax solos ever recorded by the late virtuoso Michael Brecker (RIP). As a s sax player, I cant sit here idily and read this aggregious error. Phil Woods is a great contemporary saxophonist, but he did not record this solo.
Slippery slopes.......2007-05-31
One of the neat things about living today is you can turn back to yesterday and plan tomorrow by accessing anything you want now in music in seconds....if you have money...so I thought of Slip Sliding Away (actually just a line with Delores in it-listen-) and down loaded the album to hear tonight as quick as you can hit the button on your bank account.
Of course being a day away from payday and slightly over drawn this buying of song will earn me a fee and another massive reminder of "who is the real boss around here." Slip sliding away. So go to Finland, leave your wife to go it alone and expect to be immortalized on return. I may order two more tonight. I kind of want that Aja download..and a Taj Mahal. And what about Graceland? Slip and slide right away...
This was a favorite album, listening I'm back in 1975-76 and I know exactly what I felt. Music is amazing this way. Feeling. Transported to a long streak of bad luck tune...pray it's gone at last. Man. I had long streak..pray it's gone at last....love the trip listening to memories to try to lift out of pain today.
This remix has a terrific couple songs at the end too (demo version whatever that is). Rhythm is great. Not the Ramones but I saw them too, and Simon in New York I think it was 1977 or maybe 80?, it was in the height of this, saw a Saturday Night Live...live.
In that time this album was so much fun to listen to, wistful, urban, interior, about love failed, changing. Of course I was young, 18. My daughters age now. What did I know then? Wow, we seem so very different. She's so very smart, choosing, charting. At that time I wasn't going to get married or involved, ever. Oh we are kind of alike in those words.
Hop on the bus Gus, drop off the key, slip out the back Jack, you don't need to discuss much, get yourself free. Running days....days I got around to sing and live. And here I am listening to these tunes some for the first time in 15 years. I'd forgotten My Little Town, hanging shirts in the dirty breeze...such a great tune about growing up in nowhere in the times I became me. My little town, just hanging your life on the line ...black rainbows. God what writing. The lack of imagination in a small town has never changed. I sang this to move away and beyond the dead and dying dreams I had...
I Do It For Your Love was a tune I love to hear others cover, but listening today I remember it was sweet to listen to Simon. Too much... we were married on a rainy day. The sky was yellow, grass was gray. I do it for your love....you can love that writing too. I recall all those early married years living in a migrant town in a shanty where I saw the dirt through the floorboards. And lost all my jewelry in a plastic bag to a break in.Worth only the memories. By the time I was married nine years and owned a mattress and a table, and three kids. Made the love fade, life so hard getting all the degrees after working all day and trying to do it all....on a shoe string I suppose. The orange bled the blue. Sting of reason, splash of tears. I do it for your love. Beautiful tune. Like listening to Bill Evans lay it out.
Do you like harmonica lilting through your head, listen to Night Game....I recall on this album Sanborn, Brecker, Bob James, Ralph Mc Donald, Grady Tate, Steve Gadd, Phoebe Snow...but you know poor memory... I mostly enjoy listening which I'm going to do now. Was this really the reason, "I like to sleep with the window open and you keep the window closed", so goodbye? Yeah, it's as good as any reason. Sad. I recall this is an 'after a marriage ends release', is that right...it fades in my memory. Goodbye was it?
This beautiful bed of stones holding Jerusalem...I'd forgotten it's here too. I was playing this one night years ago, over the December break...alone in my tiny apartment, no food...a friend stopped over just as I was singing this out (giving them a scary show I suppose) they'd brought me a food care package. That I was singing this ballad at the time struck me as something very like proving you have connections to universe...call of this song in the dark ...we tumble and fall through no fault of our own....never catching our stars......but times seem to leave me wondering listening tonight....his is a tune I can almost not take, bone felt, still. Very beautiful.
So now I'm slip sliding away. Again. Good thing we can sing. It's about all you've got in the dark. A day tomorrow, I lie in bed and think of things that might have been....have A Good Time those that can. Will.
Good memories. In a year with great music this got a lot of awarding. And I still enjoy it 'cause awards are a sure killer.

The best way to describe this album would be "melodically pleasing and mellow". In fact, the mellow atmosphere combined with the excellent songwriting will show you that Paul Simon really is a great singer and songwriter. He can do it all, folks. Buy this collection for a completely consistent album.
Not crazy about it but worth it for the already converted.......2006-07-14
This album had a few too many low-key cuts that wafted by without a lot of impact. I love Simon's stuff (and not just the "hits", for instance "St. Judy's Comet" is one of my favorite songs of his..) but sometimes he veers a bit into pretension. He's at his best when he's doing stuff that COULD be hits..if they weren't a little "too smart" for the room.
HIGHLIGHTS:
The title cut picks up a nice smoky jazz ambience thanks to jazzers like Michael Brecker adding a tasty sax solo and the string and woodwind arrangement by Bob James heightening the drama of the tune while not plunging it into melodrama. Perhaps the last great pairing with Art Garfunkel, "My Little Town" is another high point as Simon recalls his childhood in a one horse town ("And after it rains/There's a rainbow/And all of the colors are black/It's not that the colors aren't there/It's just imagination they lack"). The duo share production chores on the song with Phil Ramone (Billy Joel's producer). Crisp military snare drumming from Steve Gadd guides cheater how-to "50 Ways to Leave your Lover" which became a #1 for Simon. Simon hooks up with Phoebe Snow on the gospel-esque barnburner "Gone at Last" with gospel's Jessy Dixon Singers along for the ride. The lazy musical backing for "Have a Good Time" perfectly enhances the 'take it as it comes' hedonism. ("I've been loving and loving and loving/I'm exhausted from loving so well/I should go to bed/But a voice in my head/Says 'Ah, what the h**l')
LOWS:
"Night Game" is a finely etched word painting but it just never grabs me musically. I can't decide if Simon is genuinely desiring Jerusalem in "Silent Eyes" or if it's an ironic lament. It's just another one that 'lays there' for me.
BOTTOM LINE:
If you're already a fan you'll probably like it but if you've heard NEGOTIATIONS AND LOVE SONGS (Simon's greatest hits) and you want to go on from there, I'd try THERE GOES RHYMIN' SIMON next or GRACELAND and RHYTHM OF THE SAINTS for his world music excursions.

She had the public persona of a saint, and a face and voice that captured all the idealism, innocence, and optimism of the '60s folk revival. She wasn't the movement's greatest talent, but her work helped shape all women balladeers who followed. Baez's best youthful work is here, including a host of Dylan songs: "Don't Think Twice," "Gates of Eden," "Farewell Angelina," and "Love Is Just a Four-Letter Word," one of the best songs Dylan wrote but never recorded. Essential.......2007-03-02
This item gets five stars... just as sure as spring follows winter. The task is to explain why. I have read and appreciated the other reviews (and learned a lot!) so I will try a less factual approach. If you are new to Joan Baez and/or want to know where to start, this CD is IT.
I had the vinyl version of this album a hundred years ago and somehow lost track of it as is the case with many by-gone valuables. So with vague fondness, I went looking for a CD containing a song called "Sweet Sir Gallahad" because I remembered how it captivated me.
I put the CD on... and it was as though I'd always had it, had never gone a week without listening and knowing every word. Have you gotten reacquainted with a dear friend and noticed the value of your friendship melts years and miles away in an instant? Have you ever met a new friend and known instinctively that person would always be a dear friend? Look forward to savoring this CD as one of those dear friends.
Maybe you've picked up that Joan Baez has a hauntingly beautiful voice. It's true. The POWER and PURITY with which she delivers the stories on this CD are deliciously intoxicating. She could be singing Mary had a little lamb and it would be wonderful, but Joan Baez does not sing anything but deeply moving ballads...They are "meaty:" they kind of stick with you. And they grow on you. And after a while you just know they aren't going away anytime soon... so they are yours.
This is the greatness of Joan Baez. You think that listening to this rich, beautiful voice - music on its own - is the gift... and when the CD is over, the next day comes and goes, you realize that not only is the song stuck in your head, but all the richness that Joan Baez put into the song is stuck there too. Most of these songs are timeless, as if they had written themselves... so many are stories collected from here and there and cherished because they have strong messages, passionate plots. Joan Baez found the stories that became her songs. She found them, she loved them, she sang them, she shared them, gave them to us - and now they are ours.
This could be the reason there are so many high ratings... One does't take lightly the value of pricelss gifts and we diehard fans think this CD qualifies.
Bottom Line: (knowing what I know) I would buy this CD if it cost twice as much and came in a paper bag... and now you know what I know... so go ahead and pay whatever it costs... and you may find it a bargain.
Great music but very poor packaging.......2007-02-20
I doubt if anyone is going to not buy this because of the packaging, but it's worth noting anyway. There are no liner notes whatsoever. Also, no recording dates. Very cheaply produced and not remastered, though the sound is good.

Two of my favorite songs are on this CD, "There But For Fortune" and "With God on Our Side". The price of the CD is worth those songs alone as far as I'm concerned! Recommended!

Love is Just a Four-Letter Word.......2006-04-09
I first got this CD from the library I had never heard Joan Baez before and I wanted to try her music out. I ended up liking the CD so much that I bought it. Joan Baez has a beautiful voice and although she does not write many of her own songs she does a great job of interpreting others.
Here are some of the highlights of the CD:
Love is Just a Four Letter Word: An excellent song which suprisingly Bob Dylan never recorded. Although the lyrics are not fully formed that type of poetry fits well with the song about the falseness of love.
There but for Fortune: Joan Baez really captures the melancholy mood of the song. She sings it with lots of passion.
John Riley: Joan Baez does a great job of interpreting English Ballads.
Don't think Twice It's Allright: Although I prefer Bob Dylan's version of the song Joan Baez sings the song plainly and honestly.
Sweet Sir Galahad: A sweet, pretty, yet sad song which shows that Joan Baez is a talented poet as well as singer.
With God on Our Side: This song is supposed to be the one that inspired Joan to become a protest singer. The lyrics are so powerful that Joan Baez's voice is not the main centerpiece.
Farewell Angelina: An amusing somewhat surreal waltz written by Dylan shortly before his rock period.
A well recommended CD.......2006-03-18
Joan Baez is one of the most accomplished interpretive folk singer from the 60's.
Still going strong after 35 years; her First ten years were definitely her best.
All the essential songs from Baez's early years are included in this album. It is an excellent overview of her best recordings and her best songs. For any casual fan (like me), this album would probably be all what you will ever need; however if you are a novice in Joan Baez's Music, This album would be your best choice and excellent introduction to her music and songs. Recommended.

John Prine was a battle-scarred veteran of the '70s "new Dylan" club and a superb craftsman whose modest commercial success found him without a major label deal in the '80s. Prine's solution was to move to Nashville and roll his own, setting up the tiny Oh Boy imprint and making records he wanted to hear, a survival game that paid off handsomely with this 1991 set, produced by Heartbreaker bassist Howie Epstein and boasting cameos from Phil Everly, Divinyls' Christina Amphlett, Tom Petty, old pal Bonnie Raitt, and another "new Dylan" alum, Bruce Springsteen. I am listening to John Prine's CD `The Missing Years' while waiting for my brown rice spinach pilaf to cook for lunch, Tuesday, March 6, 2007. The words of the songs are printed inside the CD case, but you won't get that from me. I have printed words and chords for entire John Prine albums from the internet, with three or four songs per page. There are plenty of words in a song like `It's A Big Old Goofy World,' but it has been years since I tried to memorize the words so I could sing a song the way it would be performed. Now I'm more impressed by words that jump out at me, like the lines in `The Sins of Memphisto':
Sally used to play with her hula hoops
Now she tells her problems to therapy groups
Grampa's on the front lawn staring at a rake
wondering if his marriage was a terrible mistake
I'm sitting on the front steps drinking Orange Crush
Wondering if it's possible for me to still blush
UH HUH OH YEAH.
I have plenty of favorite people playing on this CD: David Lindley, Howie Epstein, Benmont Tench, and Mike Campbell. Four of the names for the people singing background vocals are well known. `Jesus the Missing Years' is the song which shows the greatest imagination, but `Daddy's Little Pumpkin' has the most "fire burning, burning right behind your eyes" kind of sense. There is a great blues song on this CD, `Great Rain' written by John Prine and Mike Campbell, which is something I never expected from John Prine, which has enough greatness to easily picture:

This is one of my favorite Prine releases, the other being Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings. If you are a long time Prine fan, this is a very nice additon to your collection, if you are new to JP, it is a nice place to start. The best cuts in my opinion are:

The other cuts are ok, however I am not as taken with them as I am with the ones listed.
Sins of Memphisto has to be one of my favs, the lyrics are nonsensical and thats what makes the song what it is. Kind of like American Pie, you keep listening, trying to figure out something that can't be figured out.
You won't be dissapointed.

Ever get in a rut where you don't know what to listen to? I can always find my way back to my music roots listening to this CD. Every song is magical and makes you feel like you're sitting there next to John while he tells stories. Don't miss this one. It is a must have.

This is the only John Prine album I've ever really listened to, but it's a good testament to his abilities as a songwriter and musician, and a good advertisement to make a person want to hear his other work.
"The Sins of Memphisto" is a terrific, upbeat song about growing old and gaining regrets.
"Unlonely" and "You Got Gold" are happy, hopeful, beautiful love songs.
And "All the Best" is a slightly bitter well-wishing to an old flame, and may be the album's best track.

All of the songs tell stories (though some are cryptic), and almost all of them are good. Some I could take or leave. Overall though, this is a good collection of songs, and John Prine's voice and the songs and arrangements are all very worth listening to, and all worth getting to know.

Maria Muldaur's musical style defies definition. She's conquered jazz, blues, country, folk, gospel and rock, while shaking the tambourine with Jerry Garcia and blending vocals with Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Aaron Neville, Dr. John and Charles Brown. She spent time as a member of the Even Dozen Jug Band and the Jim Kweskin Jug Band before going solo. This collection spans the last 30 years, featuring audience and personal favorites, picked by Muldaur herself. She includes track-by-track commentary in the liner notes, offering special memories and anecdotes for each of the CD's 19 tracks. Forty years into her career, Maria Muldaur continues to tour and release new material.

I have appreciated this woman's voice for more than the thirty years she has been recording. It is regrettable that she hasn't received the attention she deserves for her body of work, but that is just the luck of being an artist who chooses the best work for herself truly. She is ecclectic in her choices, ranging from New Orleans, LA to Nashville/Memphis, TN to New York City, NY. The album 'Maria Muldaur's 'Midnight At The Oasis' was my introduction to her and was a pop hit in the mid-70s and it also had on it Dolly Parton's 'My Tennesee Mountain Home'. Two songs of such distinct style differences that gave my fifteen year old mind wonderful posibilities. On this retrospective, there are the contributions of Doctor John, the Neville Brothers, Peggy Lee, Brother Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, JJ Cale, Ry Cooper, Bonnie Riatt, Mavis Staples, The Chambers Brothers, Benny Carter, and too many more. Because of Ms Mudaur, I have since listened to and become a fan of many almost forgotten greats like Ma Rainey, Memphis Minnie, Fats Waller, Bessie Smith, and Hoagy Carmichael. I have seen people try to catagorize the music of this woman, but she is more than the Blues, or Gospel, or Pop, or whatever you try to file her under - other than Favorite.

I bought this as a gift for my husband. He is very pleased with the CD, good sound and good content. Most if not all of Maria's most famous songs are on the CD. The only criticism would be that the CD jewel case was quite cheap, and it was especially difficult to remove the CD. He just put the CD in one of my clear jewel cases and works fine now.

If all you know by Maria is Midnight at the Oasis or if all you have is an album or two, you're in for a treat. This collection collects the cream of her long career and puts it in one package. If you've ever seen her perform live, then you'll know many of these songs, because these are the ones that form the core of her stage act. If you're a fan of the blues, gospel, soul, and country--not to mention straight-up pop--you will love Maria Muldaur, and this CD is the perfect introduction. Get it while you can!

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.
