"A musician for all seasons. Rocker, poet, punk, popster or folkie, it all comes as one . . . Something unique."

Product Description
Expatriate British singer-songwriter John Wesley Harding considers the format of his first album, 1989's "It Happened One Night," to be a mistake. It was a live 17-song recording of an early solo, acoustic club show, and Harding was already moving on. "My first album should have been "It Never Happened At All" - a whole different album of I was making in 1988/89 with great musicians. . . To me, it is my alternative album from a parallel world where you can have two debut albums," he explains.

Critics and listeners were impressed by "It Happened," though: Creem called it "a remarkable live debut" and Harding "a very funny, very passionate man . . .His eloquence can be gut-wrenching." The All Music Guide wrote that the CD captured Harding's "folk roots and a wonderful sense of humor."

Now Appleseed Recordings offers a 2-CD package that should satisfy everyone: "It Happened One Night & It Never Happened At All" presents a remastered and expanded version of "It Happened One Night" (with two extra songs) plus "It Never Happened At All," a companion disc of 14 previously unreleased 1988/89 studio recordings that Wes wanted as his first release.

"It Happened One Night" presents Wes's acerbic, keenly observant, and emotionally open songs bursting with words, humor and intensity as high-energy modern folk, whereas "It Never Happened At All" dresses some of those same songs - such as his early signature tune, "The Devil in Me" and later favorites like "Scared of Guns" and "Who You Really Are"- in arrangements ranging from Bo-Diddley-meets-Buddy Holly to folk-rock, rockabilly, C&W, and blues, as well as solo acoustic, frequently with full-band accompaniment by members of Elvis Costello's Attractions, Lindisfarne, current solo artist Geraint Watkins and others.

Not to be missed: disc one's "July 13 1985," a hilariously piercing look at the historic Live Aid broadcast, and two different versions of "The Devil in Me," in which Harding sardonically accepts responsibility for the world's ill's: "It all just seems like human behavior to me."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

4 out of 5 stars Good solid tunes.......2006-05-30

I got the CD for "Que Sera Sera" and discovered I also liked "Train Song" and quite a bit of the rest of the songs. Holly Cole is an artist I have only recently discovered and very much want to hear more from.

    3 out of 5 stars Nice visuals.......2002-08-15

I often trade recommendations with acquaintances, which is how I came by this album, which combines an audio with a visual CD (4 tunes by Holly, including one--"Little Boy Blue"--not on the audio version). There's a great sense of theater and presentation here, even in the exclusively audio portion. Which is not to say these aren't highly polished, even ultra, uh, "smooth" musicians (bassist David Piltch is the stand-out).

As for the voice itself and the song selections, what I'm hearing on this album is certainly more the music of Cher than of Ella, Sarah, Billie, or even Doris Day (despite the inclusion of "Que Sera" in a 6/8 gospel-feel update). Holly's voice on this album covers a single octave--from G below middle C to G above--but contains tough fiber and muscle--in fact, less "vulnerability" than any other singer who comes to mind. The vulnerability and innocense belong to percussionist Dougie Bown, who on "Little Boy Blue" sits on the floor to play brushes on a drum head and his tennis sneakers! The most enduring performance on the album is also the least contrived--"Calling You," the haunting movie theme that Holly meets on its own terms.

In the VCD portion, Holly praises the extemporaneousness of live, concert recordings such as "It Happened One Night." Based on the evidence here, I'm not quite sure what she's talking about.

5 out of 5 stars This album will make you a fan.......2000-09-05

Recorded from live performances (the best way to appreciate Holly Cole, whose studio releases have sometimes been uneven), this enhanced CD is a fabulous look at a very talented song stylist. Cole's premier gift is restyling chestnuts you thought you knew backwards and forwards (and maybe never wanted to hear again). "Que Sera Sera," Doris Day's gift to insomnia, turns into an absolute gem when Holly sings it. She is as comfortable with Stephen Sondheim ("Losing My Mind" from FOLLIES) as she is with Tom Waits ("Train Song," "Tango 'Til They're Sore") and Bob Telson ("Calling You," a little known diamond from the soundtrack of the Percy Adlon film BAGDAD CAFE).

Whatever you do, don't ignore the multimedia! Pop this into a computer, Mac or PC, and check out the videos. The video for "I Can See Clearly Now" will give you chills. Once you hear this album, you will become a Holly Cole fan. But please see her live; that's where all the real magic happens.

5 out of 5 stars Wake up and play it on your computer!.......2000-06-15

All those other 5 star reviews have it right, a great CD. What they don't mention is the multimedia part of the CD. It includes quicktime video of four songs from the concert (Including 'Little Boy Blue', which is not on the audio CD portion.), two music videos and various Q&A with Holly, stuff about the Band, etc. Not like being at a live concert, but it does add a lot to the experience of the album. So that's why it looks a little short on music! Try it, PC or Mac, you'll like it.

5 out of 5 stars The best of all of them.......1999-10-03

I have all of her CDs, but this one takes the cake. It's fairly short selection of live performances, but they are outstanding, especially "Train Song" - I haven't heard anything as fascinating and beautiful as this in a long time. Plus, there's plenty of multimedia stuff to keep you occupied. Enjoy!!!

    4 out of 5 stars John Wesley's Bullseye.......2007-07-27

As with any collection of this type, there are gems, OK stuff, and less than stellar performances; the gems far outweigh the other here. Harding's deserved folk reputation shines through. If you like the imaginary compatriots on his dream song (Phil Ochs, Steve Goodman, Bob Dylan, David Blue) you will love this. If you don't you may very well love it anyway. There are some brilliant topical and love/love over songs. Like the gunfighter he almost shares his name with, there are many more hits than misses. And a bit of blood is shed.

Enjoy!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best singer-songwriter albums on the planet!.......2005-05-10

Every song on this album is a gem, what a great record! John Wesley Harding has so much talent, the imagery on these songs is very vivid. For example, in the song "Phil Ochs, Bob Dylan, Steve Goodman, David Blue & Me" you can totally picture them all sitting around swapping songs, with a young JWH taking it all in. "July 13 1985" is dated but still hilarious today, and the 'love' songs like "Save a Little Room for Me" and "Affairs of the Heart" are timeless.

I strongly recommend this album to anyone who can appreciate a smart, well-crafted song with a bite to it. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars All That Is Right in Music.......2003-09-27

JWH's debut album is a live, acoustic show recorded in 1990 (?). Not entirely sure.

It's wonderful, for anyone who likes melodic folk with great lyrics. "If you were my country, baby, you know that I'd enlist." Just a typical line from the many incredible tunes on this record.

Musically, it's a man with a guitar. That's it. No frills, no enhancements. JWH is a good guitarist and a sunny, clear, emotive vocalist. The song structures echo American folk more than British folk, so people expecting a Richard Thompson clone are in for a big and pleasant surprise.

What can I say about this record? He's brilliant, with incisive, literate lyrics and clear, compelling melodies and playing. Awesome. Buy it. Oh and, by the way, you can't beat his cover of Prince's "Kiss." Playful and stellar.

      Buy it and enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Live Modern Folk Music at its Best.......1998-06-06

Fans of Wes can't live without this live record. It is a must-have for all. Early versions of "The Devil in Me" and "Who You Really Are" as well as brilliant spur-of-the-moments songs like "July the 13th, 1985" and the 'acapulco number' "The Night He Took Her to the Fairground" are only to be found on this album. I enjoy it from beginning to end every time I listen to it.

4 out of 5 stars Good representation of the Harding live show.......2003-01-06

I disagree completely with the first review. I've seen Harding live many times and, if anything, I've always complained that his studio releases fall far short of his live shows. This CD gives you insight into Harding's on-stage humor as well as the energy of his live appearances. The songs may be a bit faster than on his studio albums, but they also have a lot more spontaneity and vitality. Very good CD. I'd recommend it over almost any of his studio releases.

5 out of 5 stars Raw and Live Wes.......2002-05-15

This was the second album of Wes' I bought back in college and I was more than pleasantly surprised. Because it's a live album, it captures the spontaneity and energy of his shows, as well as the intimacy of his music. I now own all of his albums and this is still one of my favorites.
