Altan hails from the same part of Ireland as Clannad. But while that other County Donegal band has turned to middle-of-the-road pop, Altan walks down a more traditional path of Irish music. It's one connected to the revival begun when the Bothy Band and Boys of the Lough rediscovered an Irish musical tradition deeper than "Danny Boy." Like those forbears, Altan is more raucous, less ethereal, and relies on simple acoustic instruments and live performance to get their heritage across. That doesn't mean they're a musty repertory band, dusting off Irish curios like antique-shop keepers. Altan infuses their songs with a new vitality, led by the breathy voice of Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, who sings in English and Gaelic. She and Ciarán Curran wrap twin fiddles around songs like "The High Fiddle Reel." On the many slow airs, including "Island Girl," Altan creates a rippling accompaniment of bouzoukis, guitars, flute, and accordion to Ní Mhaonaigh's voice. Altan is a welcome relief from the over-produced new Celtic music of recent years. --John Diliberto

I don't know about the previous review, but this is just great. A nice treat when looking for a new way to appreciate the music of Roger Waters and Pink Floyd

3 out of 5 stars It could have been so much more..........2006-07-25

Like their earlier 1989 Pink Floyd recording, this recording of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra playing Pink Floyd could have been so much better than it was. Essentially, it is a recording of a Pink Floyd tribute band backed by an orchestra. The use of electric guitar, electric bass, full trap set, vocalists and synthesizers detracts from the performance and leaves the listener longing for an actual symphonic version of these works. It would have been entirely different if it had been members of Pink Floyd contributing, however it was not. Therefore, it left something to be desired.

For a fully symphonic Pink Floyd experience, try "Us and Them" by the London Philharmonic.

1 out of 5 stars Could have been much better.......2005-04-10

The record begins with what looks like a very promising rendering of "Shine on..." until the vocals enter in the sixth minute, making you scramble for the "off" button - not to let your neigbours know you're listening to this unbelievably corny crap. And this is only the beginning.

"Money", "Time" and especially "In the Flesh" are pathetic, "Us and them" and "WYWH" sound like an interminable folk music evening on German TV, and "Another Brick..." is just plain bad.

On the other hand, "Hey you" would have been quite good minus the vocals. As for "The great gig in the sky", it is the only track I would call listenable throughout, the usual horrible vocals being replaced by a woman who can actually sing.

The problem with this album is not the inevitable alteration of the spirit of Pink floyd, but the absolutely APPALLING vocal performance and some painfully kitchy instrumentation at times. Well, most of the time, actually.

If you're a diehard PF fan - like myself - and think you can take anything with its name on it, well, think again. If you don't even like Pink floyd, you'll never be able to listen to this.

2 out of 5 stars Hardly symphonic........2005-03-29

This CD suffers from the number one ailment of most symphonic tribute albums; it is only symphonic in the loosest, most liberal sense of the definition. I think a lot of listeners would agree that symphonic tribute albums should not be performed by "orchestras" which include electric guitars, bass guitars, synthesizers, or drum kits. Listening to a symphony's re-creation of a rock song should enhance the experience and expand the breadth of its reaches, not merely change some of the instruments.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Barbara Cook is one of today's most accomplished song stylists, and if you don't believe us, just listen to this live album. It's a master class in the art of singing. It documents an evening at Carnegie Hall during which Cook proved that she can dissect and extract the substance out of the simplest of lyrics. One of the best surprises is "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" (from Company), which is taken at an amiable trot and allows the singer to display its humor. Cook is not a swinging singer and uptempo is not her pace; give her a ballad, though, and she'll wring the last drop of emotion out of it. Her version of "Losing My Mind" (here paired with "Not a Day Goes By") is simply astonishing. The singer also performs songs that Sondheim has said he wished he had written, an awful lot of them by Harold Arlen. No complaints here. Guest Malcolm Gets solos on a few songs and duets with Cook on others, including "Let's Face the Music and Dance." This is classic material done masterfully by a classic singer. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2004-02-20

Having read the other reviews there is little more for me to add. I have been a Barbara Cook fan for a longtime and for me, this is one of her best concerts ever. I do, however, prefer the DVD. As with some other reviewers, I do not want to hear Malcolm Gets (as much as I like him) when I want to listen to Barbara. Her flawless interpretation of music is a hard act to follow for any singer! I managed to see this concert 4 times over a year and a half. Each time I saw her the voice was stronger and more assured (I would not have thought that possible). I can't help but think we will have the pleasure of hearing Ms Cook for many years to come. For those people who enjoyed his CD I strongly recommend purchasing the DVD. Barabara's rendition of So Many People is breathtaking (literally, I don't think I breathed once during the entire song). If you ever have opportunity to see her live - go! She has an ability to make you feel as if every song she sings and every word she speaks is directed to you alone. She can take a large venue and make it feel as intimate as your own living room. Having had the pleasure of meeting her I can say she is as youthful and pleasurable in person as she is in her performance.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone Should Whistle.......2003-10-11

After being privileged to attend this concert, I had to own the CD. Once a lyric coloratura and the original Cunegonde in Bernstein's Candide, Ms. Cook has become (in her 70s) a true diva, blessed with a velvety, warm sound. Every note has meaning. Her high B-flat on "Ice Cream" is still the envy of any soprano today. Everyone should whistle after hearing the superb performances on this CD. Even better, though, is the experience of having been in the concert hall for the live performance. Brava, Ms. Cook!

5 out of 5 stars An amazing intro to the body of work of a true master.......2003-06-16

When I first bought tickets for the 'Mostly Sondheim' show on tour (in San Francisco) I figured it couldn't be too bad. Besides, I had only been exposed to a few of his songs (Anyone Can Whistle, Losing My Mind...) and had only seen "A Little Night Music". On the way out of the theater I immediately picked up this recording of the program. It is truly amazing. I immediately began listening to it and have barely put it down in the last few months. Furthermore, my Sondheim CD collection increased in size from an unflattering zero to five (and it's still growing)! This is an amazing introduction to the works of Stephen Sondheim, who is now my favorite modern musical composer). Buy this now if you don't already have it!

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful, moving concert.......2003-04-13

This is a wonderful CD set with a great selection of songs. I do want to express a slight reservation, however. Barbara Cook has been one of my favorite singers for a number of years and the way her voice defies time is extraordinary -- for her to be singing with such bright, beautiful tone in her mid-70s with no wobble or beat in the voice is an amazing achievment.

I do have to say that by 2001, when this concert was recorded, Cook seemed to have a lost a little bit of power and intensity in her singing. This is only natural for someone of her age. Her voice is still lovely, but you can sense her keeping it in reserve a bit. She's as expressive as ever, but compare the rendition of "I got lost in his arms" on this album to the one on her previous album recorded in 1999, "The Champion Season", and there's less urgency and vocal depth in her singing here. That said, the high B at the end of "Ice Cream" is sensational.

So, despite that caveat, this is, again, a wonderful album, a must for Cook fans, especially for the gorgeous renditions of songs I'd never thought I'd get to hear her perform: "Not a Day Goes By", "Happiness/Loving You", "San Francisco", etc. Buy it!

1 out of 5 stars ... and I love Barbara Cook.......2003-02-11

This recording is a disappointment for me. It is not her best work, and Malcolm Gets is uninspired. My biggest complaint however is the engineering of the recording. Throughout the speaking was to soft, the singing volumes uneven, and the applause deafening. I will be passing this CD on to friends, and will later donate it to my local library.

This orchestral pink floyd is very classic even more classic than pink floyds The Wall.

2 out of 5 stars Weak and Unimaginative.......2004-04-22

Pink Floyds music is very indepth, strong, and moving. I never thought someone could butcher such solid music and take away everything that makes it great. But somehow this awful "tribute" seems to do just that. The arrangements are poorly constructed, the music loses its emotion, and the titles with vocals are sung so emotionlessly that it kills the even takes the meaning away from what was once beautiful poetry. There are very, very few tributes that I would recommend. One is "Us and Them: Pink Floyd Symphonic." It keeps the integrity of the songs while introducing a whole new way to look at the bands work. I'm a Pink Floyd completionist and while their work varies, this is the only Pink Floyd related disc that I regret purchasing.

3 out of 5 stars Just buy Floyd.......2002-10-03

There's nothing special about this tribute other than it being for Pink Floyd. For a new twist on Floyd favorites, Us & Them: Symphonic Pink Floyd is amazing.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Floyd-Tribute So Far.......2002-09-08

There have been a number of Pink Floyd tribute albums in the past ten years, few of them any good, from electronic tributes to bluegrass sendups. But "Orchestral Maneuvers: The Music Of Pink Floyd" places the band's work in a form that fits them better. It's a shame this tribute was ripped off and overshadowed by "Us And Them: The Symphonic Pink Floyd" a few years later; David Palmer's brilliant arrangements and conducting of the skilled Royal Philharmonic Orchestra shine bright in variations on 'Run Like Hell' and especially the 'Brick In the Wall' series. One wouldn't expect 'Hey You' to appear here, but it works anyway, just like the subtle choir on 'Goodbye Blue Sky' and the curiosity-provoking take on 'Wish You Were Here.' The highlight is no doubt a variation on 'When the Tigers Broke Free,' which fares far better than its original version (from "The Wall" movie in 1982). "Orchestral Maneuvers" is classical variations at its finest, fitting and just short of essential for any Floyd fan's collection.

1 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2002-06-10

Unfortunately I was EXTREMELY unhappy after listening to the album. Unlike many other Altan fans, I view Maireads singing as the weakest part of the groups appeal despite their having chosen some excellent songs over the course of their recording career. The problem is that on this album they emphasize her singing to the almost total exclusion of their instrumentals which was what attracted me to the group in the first place. And the few instrumentals they do play are played with no spirit almost like "well I guess we have to put a few instrumentals on" kind of effort. I'm sorry, but she has a thin voice and is frequently shrill and off-key on many of their songs. She is however an excellent fiddler and that with the superb abilities of the other members and inspired arrangements made them for me the top Irish folk group. Alas they have decided to stress her poor-to-mediocre vocals instead of their great abilities in playing reels, jigs, etc. I miss Frankie Kennedy's flute too. Goodbye Altan, your best day's are over unless you revert to the format of the old days.

5 out of 5 stars more than worth the wait.......2002-01-03

The first time I heard Altan was on NPR. I was blown away by their stunning version of "Green Grow the Rushes." As soon as I returned home that day I looked up the album and stuck it on my wish list. It sat there for a great while. Happily, I received the disc as a Christmas present from a good friend of mine--a friend with wonderful taste in music. "Another Sky" is one of the best CD's I've heard in some time...and I'm not just saying that because it was a present. These folks can make music!

"Green Grow the Rushes" is haunting indeed. The first time I heard Altan perform it, the song was stuck in my head for days. I find this to be true of most of the songs that Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh sings on the disc. She has a beautiful voice. Although they are all great, I think my favorite song with lyrics on "Another Sky" is "Island Girl" (which is also the song that the disc takes its name from).

Two other songs that deserve special mention are "The Dispute at the Crossroads" and "Gusty's Frolicks." They are both great jigs. One can never get enough of those. The fiddle playing on this disc is excellent.

I am so glad that I received "Another Sky" for Christmas. It was well worth the wait. I give it my highest recommendation and urge you to get a copy--you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Voice.......2000-10-06

I took this cd, along with about 20 others, on a trip to Ireland last March. The travel group I was with included two cars full of Irish Americans most of whom were visiting the Emerald Isle for the first time. As a surprise for those riding in the "other car" I slipped this new Altan cd in the trunk located cd holder. Later those riding in that auto remarked on how much they enjoyed the one cd in particular with the woman who has the "beautiful voice." I was not surpised because this is one of my favorite cds, and though some additional songs in irish would be nice, it is nonetheless an excellent and thoroughly enjoyable listening experience. This is a fine recording by one of the best traditional Irish music groups today. Try it, you will like it.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT CD!.......2000-07-15

This, to me, is Altan's finest CD. The vocals are excellent, as always. The song arrangement makes it flow very well. Island Girl is a highlight, along with Green Grow the Rushes. But I especially like Mairead's beautiful singing on Eoghainin O' Ragadain. What a wonderful voice! If you like Altan, you will definitely love this CD!

3 out of 5 stars A bit disappointed..........2000-06-21

I adore Altan. I'd go see them live ANYtime, as they play with passion, clarity, and originality. This CD, however, doesn't quite do it for me, meaning, I have to make myself listen to it, to keep up with what one of my fave Irish bands is doing. I love the opening cut, and would love to see Altan do more vocally playful stuff like this. I must agree with the Dublin reviewer, however, about the middle-of-the-road quality of the album overall. I miss the rich, driving arrangements typical of their studio work (the sets here sound a little thin to me), and think there are too many slow ballads. (Of these, I do find "Island Girl" very moving, as it does seem to allude to Frankie. But I'd only include one of these per album.) I've always bought Altan albums on principle, without previewing, knowing I was in for a great listen. I will probably sample first, here on out.

3 out of 5 stars A good album.......2004-07-13

Another Star in the Sky is David Arkenstone's sixth full-length album. It was released in 1994. There are ten compositions; three of these feature lead vocals from Arkenstone--"Far Far Away," "Voices of the Night," and "Taken by the Wind." The material is in a New Age musical direction. I like all of the tracks. Overall, the musicianship is gratifying and the sound quality is pleasing. My favorite pieces are "Far Far Away," "Voices of the Night," "Another Star in the Sky," and "Taken by the Wind." The serene, ethereal "Far Far Away" presents nice, ambient vocals from Arkenstone. The pretty "Voices of the Night" displays airy, charming singing and appealing fretless bass guitar playing from Arkenstone. "Another Star in the Sky" is an admirable composition that exhibits memorable piano work from Arkenstone. On the catchy "Taken by the Wind," a smooth and enjoyable job is done by Arkenstone with the vocals, the keyboard work, and the fretless bass guitar--there is also a notable, attractive refrain. Arkenstone is a talented composer, arranger, and musician; I like how he incorporates different instruments--orchestral and exotic, for example--into his work. His music has a lushness and earthiness that impresses me. The CD packaging includes an essay written by Arkenstone, the song lyrics, and several illustrations; also, there are some graphics behind the CD tray. The disc is just over 51 minutes. Another Star in the Sky is a recommendable album.

4 out of 5 stars A Slight Change of Mood.......2004-07-10

This recording stands out from David Arkenstone's previous works in two notable ways. First is the addition of lyrics. David has written words for and performs vocals on three of the tracks. While they're not epic poetry, they do compliment the music and provide nice imagery. Second, the tone of the album as a whole is shifted a little more into a "minor key". Earlier albums included some playful tracks such as "Hindu Holiday" from Island or "Dances of Jankayla" from In The Wake Of The Wind. But as this was inspired by the passing of his mother, the pieces David wrote for this one are more contemplative, almost nostalgic. That's not to say they're swamped in moroseness; far from it. In fact the final track "Ride into Midnight" has a sense of urgency that develops through the whole piece, propelling it forward into that starlit night and has become one of my favorite songs.

Overall, the wondeful blend of acoustic instruments, synthesized sounds and simple vocals makes this an excellent CD.

5 out of 5 stars Not Quite A Senior.......2001-11-29

Gotta give Dave a huge standing ovation. He was into heavy metal and all the perks that came living in that environment. When he found out his Mother was dying... got together with friends and wrote/recorded this album to dedicate to his Mom. It is awesome just listening via speakers but do yourself a favor and kickback and use headphones. He has come a long way and continues to entertain us with his unique new age music. Read the flyer and listen... have a box of kleenex. Hurray to Dave...I'm sure his Mother is the Star in the Sky protecting him.

4 out of 5 stars Nice computer work here.......2000-12-01

I have just listened to Ray Lynch and I am a big enya fan. I also love cusco. I saw a coment here about this guy playing 40 instruments. If Someone can say that thats really good because this stuffis mostly computer synthed in whats called a tracker. However trackers can sound real. I love modern techno and rave music as well, I would not recommend this as much as I would enya, but it is deffiantly worth it. Also, the cover art is neat.

5 out of 5 stars Rick R........2000-11-30

If any artist can you give a feel of what the CD is like just by looking at the cover, David can. The icy blue cover gives you the impression that the CD has a celestial feel, and it does. Over very atmospheric soundscapes, David builds great string and synth arrangements to make this a dynamic CD. Even the vocal tracks are tasteful. moody, catchy, and more importantly, not overdone. For me, the whole CD is the highlight. Great for nocturnal listening, as well as day absorption. Take it from someone who has almost his entire catalogue, it's worth it! You'll save money on those meditation tapes if you did!

5 out of 5 stars The way country music should sound.......2006-08-02

This was the first album I heard of Royal Wade Kimes - it genuine, heart-wrenching, and just the way I think country music should sound. I have all his albums, and his book. What a rare talent!

5 out of 5 stars Two Steppin' Fun.......2004-03-25

We definitely recommend this Hot Country album. Great two steppin' tunes and sweet love songs that we can all relate to. This is a great album for any true country music fan.

5 out of 5 stars This is real music!.......1999-11-29

This album is awesome! I heard it at a friend's house, and knew I had to have it! What a unique sound this man has! If you like country music and you're tired of everyone sounding alike, you'll love this album!

5 out of 5 stars The most overlooked artist in Nashville.......1999-04-19

I had never heard or heard of Wade Kimes before I saw his CD in Wal Mart. I looked at the cover, read the song titles, and bought the CD. I listened to it in my truck on the way home and realized that this was going to be one of the best CD's in my collectin. This man has been blessed with a songwriting talent matched by few. His style of music is back to traditional with a bit of a kick to it. I hope you don't mind Mr. Kimes but my band played a couple of your songs during our gigs and the people all loved them. I urged these folks to go out and buy the CD so that they could hear some more of the finest country music to come out of Nashville since George Strait. Well done, Terry.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Moravian songs, via Janacek, Godar, Bittova and Skampa.......2006-05-09

This is a unique recording of Janacek's transcriptions of Moravian folk songs. Originally for piano and voice, they have been transcribed by Slovak composer Vladimir Godar for string quartet and (occasionally) three-voice male chorus. Here they are performed by renowned Czech singer and violinist Iva Bittova, accompanied by the Skampa Quartet and chorus. The effect is not so much of classical liede, but of authentic eastern European "popular" songs - the sonority of the string quartet adds to this in no small part. Janacek would be proud.

2 out of 5 stars Skampa Quartet is great - the singer... yikes.......2005-07-28

I honestly did not know what I was getting myself into when I bought this CD. I love Janacek, I love folk songs... how could I go wrong? Iva Bittova! I was concerned that she would have a 50yr old woobly voice, but instead what exists is a thin VERY nasal tone... perhaps she should be singing traditional Bulgarian music! The voice is expressive, just ugly.
The recording quality is not very good, either. On many of the tracks, Iva seems to be muffled and in the background of the recording.
Really - dont waste your time and money, unless you really would just like to have a recording of over 50 Janacek songs.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Haunting.......2006-06-25

This atmospheric album from 1990 is beautifully entrancing and mesmerizing. It opens with Please Remember Me where Michael Gira does the lead vocal. The next one: Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes, a poem by Ben Jonson (a contemporary of Shakespeare) is sung like a hymn by Jarboe and ends in a recitation of the Lord's Prayer over ominous shortwave noises.

The melancholy Everything For Maria seems to be about the death of Maria Callas and how her bodyguards/servants stripped her possessions when she died. Nick Drake's Black Eyed Dog evokes naked terror with the powerful vocals, the eerie breathing and a dog's electronic barking, and leaves a chilling impression even minutes after the last notes have faded.

Mystery Of Faith is another highlight and ends in a long German narration by a Hans J Blatter that appears to be about life, death and reincarnation. Except for the Nick Drake cover, this album shows the softer side of Swans, as indeed the World of Skin project was meant to do. Soft in music, that is, not in feeling, as emotions of sorrow and melancholy resignation predominate. But it's a beautiful listening experience and a truly awesome work. A definite must-have for all fans of Swans, Jarboe and Angels of Light.
