As Basil Bunting wrote about Ezra Pound's Cantos, "There are the Alps... you will have to go a long way round/if you want to avoid them." Led Zeppelin's work is the central fact of 1970s rock & roll; in its loving homage to and shameless piracy from the blues, its glorious and wretched excess, its transformation of hippie and folk-rock graces into a foundation-shaking kaboom, and its offhanded myth-making, the band turned everything caught in its wake into a reaction to it--or against it. The three non-album tracks the box includes are grace notes rather than lost jewels, but the point of the set is to be a Rosetta stone of album rock, the stairway to a gaudy paradise that they constructed. --Douglas Wolk
Customer Reviews:
Your one-stop Zep shop!.......2007-05-01
I got this because after all the years of playing just made my vinyl too noisy to convert to CD, and at around average cost of $9 a CD (it's a 9 album 10 CD set), it would have cost me at least $8-9 per CD plus shipping. The way the CD's are in a sleeve (like the albums were) was kind of neat, and the storage case keeps all the CD packaging in one spot with the booklet. Also that 2 CD's are in each "album" is an innovative packaging idea and it has everything that each LP had as far as artwork goes. I would suggest to any Zep fan that doesn't have a lot of their CD's go this route as it will save you money in the long run. And the re-masters sound great. A few of the bonus tracks on the "CODA" CD are pretty decent, but the fact you can get all their studio stuff new for under $100 I think is awesome!
Glorious that just doesn't cut it, Speechless is more like it........2007-03-07
These guys are the masters, the reigning kings of Hard Rock. Every gem is in this box set. Granduer, awesomeness and epic could be a couple of words to describe this box set, all I've got to say is buy it for your self, it will change your life. There was a time when I lost my job and I had to sell most of my record collection to make ends meet. Out of my whole collection I wouldn't give this up. This set got me through that peroid and also got me through other tough peroids in my life.
This box set chronciles the bands starting, up to its monarch like ascent and then to its fall when Bonzo died. All the albums are here in a 10 Box Set. Dazed and Confused, Ramble On, Misty Mountain Hop, Black Dog, Rock n'Roll, Stairway To Heavan, Achille's Last Stand, Candy Shop Rock, Kashmir, and Ozone Baby all those juicy bits are here a song for each mood. Led Zep's influences are easily seen here, garage rock, psychedelia, progressive, Rockabilly, country and of course the greatest influence the Blues. I often wonder if there is in any truth in the myth the band sold their souls to the Dark One because such mind numbing talent is almost beyond the pale of reality. I'm telling you get this set no music lover will be disapponited. Absolutely Awesome. Has 4 bonus tracks never released "Baby Come On Home", "Travelling Riverside Blues", "White Summer/Black Mountain Side", and "Hey Hey What Can I Do?" all songs in the blues vein and take their place besides the other greats. There is also a book of liner notes written by Cameron Crowe that have bits of interviews with the band and info on some of the songs. All in all this is a must have for any Zep head or person who apperciates good music.
Can't Get Any Better Than This.......2007-01-20
This is the best boxed set in music history by the greatest rock band in music history. Too bad they did not include The Song Remains the Same and How the West Was Won to it.
My only problem with this set is that my red aussie cattle dog ate the slipcase for Led Zeppelin III and IV and I cannot replace it. So I have a nice set with nice double slipcases and one eaten by my dog. At least she has taste huh? P.S. The cds are still good.
LED ZEPPELIN Collection.......2007-01-10
Simply wonderful. Exactly what I was waiting and hoping for. Excelent package and sound quality.
Worst packaging job ever........2007-01-07
The music in this set is brilliant and is 5 stars all around.
Unfortunately, the packaging for this set is absolutely atrocious. The box itself is pretty cool and even has a little door that slides away into the box (like an old garage door). Inside the box are 6 slots for the photo book/new liner notes and the 5 CD cases. Each CD case is a little hardback book that holds 2 CDs and the recreated liner notes from the original LPs. For example, Led Zeppelin I and Led Zeppelin II are housed in the same hardback book with original liner notes. Unfortunately, if you want to read the liner notes for II, you have to flip the booklet over and start from the back. This is just stupid and the idea should have been shot down at the very beginning as soon as someone realized it would require Presence to come before Physical Graffiti if you wanted to have both discs of PG in the same booklet. The next packaging problem is that the CDs are housed in paper slots inside the booklets. CDs are not meant to be housed in construction paper. It scratches them every time the CDs are removed or replaced. Another stupid thing about this package is that the original cover art is shrunk down to little more than a 2 inch square.
So what we have here is shrunken cover art on booklets that present Led Zeppelin's CDs out-of-order with upside down liner notes and construction paper sleeves that scratch the CDs. This is not exactly the packaging that music of this quality deserves.
The packaging designers for this project should be ashamed of themselves. It might sound silly to harp on about this, but when the boxed set costs as much as this one does, it should be presented in a manner that is attractive, logical, and pays proper tribute to the original LP packaging. And, of course, it should be presented in a way that doesn't scratch up the CDs!

The one thing you can say about Frank Wildhorn is that he doesn't give up. Like The Scarlet Pimpernel, Jekyll & Hyde , based on R. L. Stevenson's classic depiction of a split personality run amok, went through several rewrites and casts--each show is a work-in-neverending-progress for Wildhorn. This recording immortalizes the show's classic Broadway cast: Robert Cuccioli as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Linda Eder as Lucy, and Christiane Noll as Emma. Appropriately for the show, Wildhorn's score is both tempestuously romantic and unabashedly ominous. While Cuccioli handles both parts with elan, Wildhorn saved his best songs for Lucy and Emma, confirming that he really is the contemporary master of the power ballad. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
really good music.......2007-03-22
I used this CD to preview/rehearse for the J&H show I'm in. Music didn't always line up/match what the libretto has, but it was a good introduction to the show and helped me with the basics.
Solid album.......2007-02-07
A good recording for any fan of the show or theater music.
No complaints- original artists in full showing.
Original Broadway Casts are the way to go.
Exceeded My Expectations.......2006-12-16
I first heard the song 'This is the Moment' on an internet radio station and immediately fell in love with it. Seeking out the CD with this song, I discovered 'Jekyll & Hyde; the Musical', and purchased it without delay. I was a bit skeptical about it after reading some of the reviews I had found for it, but as soon as I gave it a listen, I was hooked. I can not recall a CD capturing my attention as much as this one, and have to say that it exceeded my expectations. It still possesses the same granduer for me as it did the first time I heard it, and may well do so for years to come. I feel it was very well written, Brucisse's lyrics are very witty, and Wildhorn's music suits the moods and almost invites one into the lives of the characters. I own a few other 'Jekyll & Hyde' Cd's, but, in my opinion, this one is the best so far. If you are a fan of such musicals as 'Phantom of the Opera' or 'Tanz Der Vampire' I would recommend you give this one a chance. You will not be disappointed.
As a side note, the DVD of this musical with David Hasslehoff is grand as well if you wish to see the story unfold before your eyes. David's vocals are not as good as Robert Cuccioli's, but I did enjoy getting to see it come to life.
94's Studio Cast Album is much better.......2006-11-24
I first heard this soundtrack and fell in love with it, but after reading the reviews regarding the 94 studio cast decided to give that one a try and I have not been disappointed. It contains more songs and my current favourite from it is "The Girls of the Night" a very haunting song between Nellie and Lucy (both prostitutes). I do not regret purchasing this CD, but if you have to choose only one get the 94 studio cast.
Not as good as 1994 Concept Production.......2006-11-11
OK, I got this one just for the sake of the new songs in it.
The first piece is nice, but, oh well, everyone should understand the but.
It's not the vocalist problem, but more into the song editing issues.
I hate they change the name into Emma, I don't care what's the reason behind it, it is just "wrong".
I recommend the 1994 concept case production with full scores if you are interested in because even the live show can't make it that well.

Amazon.com essential recording
This Rhino re-release of Amazing Grace is at least as much a work of love as of marketing. The sound is beefier and clearer, but most importantly, the two-day church sessions are included. So, there's much more church (specifically, Reverend James Cleveland's marvelous orating) on the record, as well as contemporaryisms such as a cool organ rendition of George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord." Originally released as a double LP in 1972, Amazing Grace cracked the Billboard Top 10 on its release, making it one of the best selling gospel records of all time. Grace was recorded in a large Baptist church with an ultraenthusiastic audience in the pews, a full, funky band, and the Southern California Community Choir under the direction of Franklin's mentor, Cleveland. Her voice is melismatic and intensely emotional, yet pure and controlled, as if she is channeling the Holy Ghost. Franklin's father, the brilliant preacher Reverend C.L. Franklin, makes a brief, proud appearance, remarking, "She has never left the church!" Other highlights include the beautiful "Wholy Holy," an 11-minute, heart-stopping "Amazing Grace," and Inez Andrews's stirring "Mary, Don't You Weep." Way more than a return-to-the-roots record, this set is an inspired gospel-soul workout that arguably showcases Franklin's strongest singing ever. --Mike McGonigal
Customer Reviews:
THE LAST TRACK THAT IS ON THE 1ST TRACK.......2007-05-16
THE CD OVERALL IS OKAY, BUT I SHOULD HAVE RETURNED IT BUT MY DAUGHTER LOVE IT SO WELL, I AM NOT REALLY HAPPY WITH IT BUT I CAN LIVE WITH IT.
A Revelation.......2006-12-10
Amazing Grace is widely acknowledged to be Aretha Franklin's magnum opus. With her 1972 return to gospel roots, she evolved from "Queen of Soul" to "The Queen." As her father, Reverend Franklin, notes to a rapt audience during one of the two night performances: "she can sing anything." This isn't filial boasting; it's an understatement. Recorded in a large Baptist church with the Southern California Community Choir, Aretha belts her way through traditional hymns, standards and pop tunes alike--and in the process redefines them. Her overall performance is a revelation. Period.
If praising Amazing Grace is needlessly redundant, the Rhino reissue itself is worth discussing. For those accustomed to the orginal record, be prepared for some changes. In the spirit of preserving the integrity of the event, the producers have reproduced both night's performance in their near entirety. Vocal overdubs peppered judiciously throughout the original release have been removed in favor of celebrating the imperfect but more immediate live setting. Thus, "Old Landmark" and "How I Got Over" sound noticeably rougher, though more authentic, than their studio-enhanced counterparts.
A must have.......2006-11-09
This cd is timeless- If you love Aretha you must own this cd
A treat.......2006-09-19
This is a remastered version of Aretha Franklin's breakthrough 1972 gospel album AMAZING GRACE. This was recorded in front of a live audience in 1972, culled from two live performances with the Southern California Community Choir, Ken Lupper, and the Rev. James Cleveland at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles. This two disc set features the original 14 tracks, and a bonus 15, making it 29 tracks in total. It is great to hear the music unedited! This is a must have for Aretha's big fans!
I Love Aretha!.......2006-03-18
This is one of the best gospel compliations I have heard. I love the combination of Aretha Franklin and the choir and Rev. James Cleveland.

As good as Pomus and Gordy were, they can't compare with the premier rock & roll songwriters of the pre-Beatles era: Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller, Chuck Berry, and Percy Mayfield. The team of Leiber (the lyricist) and Stoller (the composer) created such enduring standards as "Kansas City," "Hound Dog," "Stand By Me," "Spanish Harlem," "Jailhouse Rock," and many more. Those songs and 33 more were assembled into a bookless Broadway musical called Smokey Joe's Cafe, which was nominated for eight Tony Awards. If this soundtrack album is any indication, the show was an abomination, an act of self-betrayal by Leiber and Stoller, who not only participated in putting the show together but also co-produced the album with Arif Mardin. Instead of remaining true to the songs' rock & roll roots, the soundtrack producers have allowed the obscure stage performers to commit Broadway's worst sins: excessive earnestness, undernourished rhythms, and bombastic over-singing. Everyone in the cast has a good singing voice, but no one has a distinctive musical personality. Michael Park's Presley parody on "Jailhouse Rock," B.J. Crosby's confusion of vocal power for vocal attitude on "Hound Dog," and Victor Trent Cook's syrupy version of "I (Who Have Nothing)" prove Broadway chorus dancers are no substitute for real rock & roll singers. --Geoffrey Himes

Amazon.com essential recording
Queen of Soul trumps all other collections of Aretha's recordings for Atlantic by adding dozens of album tracks to a selection of epochal singles ranging from "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)" and "Respect" to "Spanish Harlem" and "Rock Steady." Over three CDs and change--the fourth runs out of steam, as did her creative energy during the mid-to-late-'70s period it chronicles--we hear many emotional shifts: impassioned, triumphant, wistful, and always truthful about her condition and our own. --Rickey Wright

"Simply,THE TRUTH!".......2005-06-11
I've had this box set for a while. At times I've listened to each disc on it's own and enjoyed it. Recently, I had to drive a lot over the Memorial Day weekend (to my daughters travel basketball games) and decided that I'd listen to the whole box set, starting at disc one through disc four. The experience was a revelation. Aretha is one of the greatest vocalist ever to record. And when she sings, she simply "tells the truth." When she says she, "Never Loved a Man," "the way that I love you," that's what she means. When she wants a "Do Right Man," because she'll be a "do right woman," that's what she means. You hear it in her voice when she talks about being a "Natural Woman," telling her man to "Think," and saying she wants "R-E-S-P-E-C-T;" you know what she's talking about. And it's not just the classic, old jams she vocalizes the truth on. It could be lesser known gems, such as "Try Matty's," "The House that Jack Built," or "Don't Play that Song." When she says "Rock Steady," I'm up and grooving, rockin' steady. When she says she'll be that "Bridge Over Troubled Water," it's spiritual. And when she sings "Call Me," or "Until You Come Back to Me," the urgency in her voice sends chills through me. My Dad loved Aretha and I grew up listening, but not appreciating Aretha. Once you get to be my age though, all you're looking for is truth and honesty and if you purchase this box set, you will definitely get it! I love this four disc CD set. I recommend it for anybody needing an intro to Aretha's greatness or anybody who needs to hear it TOLD LIKE IT IS!
Queen of Soul: The Atlantic Recordings ~ Aretha Franklin.......2005-03-26
This collection of her atlantic recordings is stupendous and amazing. Franklin is a tremendous artist with mega super hits such as think, respect, and many more. The book-let is very nice with high end photographs of Franklin and the covers of all her albums that she made for atlantic. There is so much to like about her and her amazing ability as a vocalist, muisician, lyricist and performer. The front cover photo is very nice with Franklin mayb e in her 30's or later, I have no idea, but it is a very nice photo and she looks great. Gotta love those tacky sunglasses on her 1975 release you. This is a very nice compilation that one should not miss.
Essential Cornerstone of any Soul collection.......2005-02-10
I know, I know, you narrow your eyes whenever you see the term "essential," in an amazon review. Well, hate to tell you but it doesn't get any more essential than this. This may be the gold standard of Box sets. Better than my Joy Division, my Miles, my Coltrane, and my Sonny Rollins sets. By heaps and piles!
As far as I'm concerned: It's Billie, Nina and Aretha. The Mother, The Daughter and The Holy Spirit of Soul. I love Etta (both Ettas). I love Mahalia, and I love Bessie. I swear by Ruth Brown. Mabel Mercer and Roberta Flack- Love 'em to death. But one gives credit where it's due: at her absolute prime, Aretha sounds, well- PRIMAL. Like her voice has become the avatar of Athena, Artemis and Aphrodite- all rolled into one. The woman's pipes are sooooo grand as to be almost inhuman- yet tempered with such human warmth, tenderness, humility... Her voice does things to me, and unless you're a robot in disguise or one of the walking dead- it will to you too... So. Forget the label, "soul," and all the baggage it carries- just take the word at face value: If you possess a soul- you will love this. This is the kind of music that unites generations- gives all cultures a common ground.
This collection is a couple steps short of being 'comprehensive,' but still pulls off being definitive. It's missing a few tracks that the hardcore fans will kick up a fuss over... Still: 4 CDs. 88 tracks. Excellent sound (most of the earliest songs are preserved in mono: a good thing), the remastering is phenomenal. Great packaging, the 80+ page booklet has interviews with everyone, it's a sweet read. Then there's the smalll fact that you're getting All her Atlantic hits and (probably) the cream of her entire Atlantic output: albums, singles, B-sides, all of it (and that's saying something). I defy you to bat an eye at this.
You'll want this over the Columbia Comp. Some go for the early 60's Aretha, but I feel I can say this without reservation: her individuality blossomed at Atlantic. It was with her move to Atlantic (back when the likes of Jerry Wexler, David Ritz, Dave Marsh and Tommy Dowd were workin it) that she began to earn the apropos moniker, "Queen of Soul." At Columbia, one always feels like she's straining against the pop arrangements. She's trapped, yearning to be set free. The Columbia producers cramped her innate tendency to do what gospel singers do best: let loose. That's just what she does over the course of these four fantastic CDs. Atlantic gave Aretha the license to use her wings. We all get to some along for the ride.
You really don't have a reason not to get this. If you feel that nigh-60 dollars is too much to drop... Well, the BMG people (yeah, the ones that mail out those annoying CD forms that you always forget to fill in and return on time and then you have some crap you never wanted in your maibox to ambush you) usually has a sweet half-off policy for all box-sets. They offer this for about 25 $'s, which is actually about 33$'s, once you add the shipping and tax. Just so's you know.
PS. Jimmy Smith died today. RIP
Near Perfect .......2004-11-10
Of course, I love Aretha Franklin & am very grateful to my buddy who gave me this boxed set as gift. Being the perfectionist I am, I do have some complaints, so please bear with me :
1) Where is "Lean On Me"? This was a non-album B side of "Spanish Harlem". This is not the Bill Withers song, but a Van McCoy compostion. Surely they could have included it. Fortunately I have a turntable & managed to salvage the single out of my collection. FYI - Melba Moore also does a great version of this song which is worth checking out.
2) Disc 4 is a little uneven. Even a great artist like Aretha Franklin put out some less than great music. Her "5 for the DeeJay" is a strange song which for some strange reason creeps me out whenever I hear it. It sounds almost like a parody of her classic style. Sorry, I'm probably overanalyzing things here. As long as they were putting her later stuff on the set, why not include at a couple of numbers from her last 2 albums "Almighty Fire" & "La Diva". I know that the material is supposed to be horrible, but it would have been good just for the shock value. At least, I would have been interested in hearing the Skip Scarborough material which considering the man's other work, couldn't have been that awful!
3) Some of the additions that I suggested could have taken the place of some of the inclusions. Her version of "Somewhere" is nice but not essential to me. Also, I know I'll get into hot water for this one. I know that the duet with Ray Charles must have been wonderous in concert, but for some reason doesn't come off that well on record. Of course, with the recent death of Mr. Charles its inclusion is fitting & proper.
4)I love Gospel music but the inclusion of the one Gospel song sounds somewhat out of place on this collection. It might have been a better idea to put together a Gospel collection, which I think there has been in the last few years. Possibly, her version of Marvin Gaye's "Wholly Holy" might have been a better choice. I know! I know! I'm being very picky!
Okay I better say some things I really enjoy about this collection:
1) The numbers from the Curtis Mayfield produced "Sparkle" are absolute gems & deserve more attention that they have gotten.
2) The beautiful "Without Love" co-written by sister Carolyn is a very moving number which almost brings me to tears.
3) Her "Young Gifted & Black/Spirit in the Dark" Period is very well covered here - including some awesome cover versions such as "Spanish Harlem", "Don't Play that Song", "You're All I Need to Get By" & a stunning version of Elton John's "Border Song" that totally blows away EJ's version. During this time, she was also writing more of her own songs which, again, are stunning - "Call Me", "Daydreaming", "All the King's Horses", etc. I can't remember if she wrote "One Way Ticket", but it is another lost gem!!!
4) Of course, her "Lady Soul" period (the 1st 4 Atlantic albums) is covered well. Some of the lesser heard tracks really stand out like ballads such as "Prove It" & "Baby Baby Baby". Of course, Carolyn Franklin's composition "Ain't No Way" still blows me away every time I hear it. By the way that is Cissy Houston (Whitney's mom) hitting those stratospheric high notes in the background. I have heard DJs incorrectly say that it was Carolyn doing the singing there.
5) The "Soul 69/This Girl's in Love..." period is interesting. Some critics seemed to savage the stuff from "Soul 69" which is actually quite nice. Again, why couldn't they have included her version of "This Girl's in Love..."? Oops! I'm complaining again. Sorry!
So, anyway, for anyone who is still reading this rambling review, I hope I'm forgiven for my criticisms. I do love Aretha! When an artist is as talented as she is, I tend to expect absolute perfection. Anyway, enjoy!
P.S. If you don't have the bucks to lay down for this collection & don't have nice friends who will give you a gift copy, you should check out some of her individual collections like "Aretha Arrives" "Lady Soul" or "Never Loved A Man". Also there are some budget priced collections which include her well-known & lesser known material, and they are the original recordings - not re-recordings!
Forever The Queen!!!.......2004-09-08
Hey Aretha fans
I would like to let everyone know that I LOVE Aretha!!
I have ever since I first borrowed a tape that had her "oldies" on it. It wasn't until I became older that I learned to appreciate her lyrics. This collection is by far the best I have ever had! I listen to it in every possible direction i can. But I love to hit shuffle and wonder what song is gonna be next. This collection has almost everything Aretha did in the 60's and i would love to hear the other songs that aren't on this collection. Which means buying all of her records but hey when u love Aretha as much as I do you don't really care. ha ha
So to all of you that have this collection Congrats! and to those of you THINKING of getting this GO HEAD!
Cause this is the proper way to hear the QUEEN OF SOUL!

The music becomes part of you..........2007-07-08
The Scarlet Pimpernel is so rich and lyrical, and the story is so compelling, it has become part of who I am. Delivered by a magnificent cast, the music is visceral. Take a ride on the "Carousel" and go "Into the Fire." Vive'!
A piece of greatness.......2007-07-02
Each of the three official Scarlet Pimpernel recordings have things to offer, but this is probably a good choice for starters. In my opinion, Rex Smith on this recording and Terrance Mann on the OBC both do a phenominal job on "Falcon In The Dive" and "Where's The Girl." The same goes with Rachel York and Christine Andreas's performances-- although I tend to prefer Rachel a bit more. Both of the re-recorded tracks by her are simply amazing. Although I can understand why this production never had much of a staged success, the score is simply gorgeous.
SCARLET PIMPERNEL .......2007-06-15
I have a cassette version (yep, a cassette!) of this musical, as I collect
musicals for professional reasons.....I like Frank Wildhorn's music, but the first and foremost reason I bought THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL is because
my favorite actor Terrence Mann originated the role of CHAUVELIN. His cover of WHERE'S THE GIRL sends little shivers up my spine....wooo! That song is worth the price the CD! Teri
Brilliant Musical.......2007-05-24
The music has everything - romance, wit, lush melodies, slapstick comedy. Quite the best music in a musical show for some years. I can't wait for the show to be produced in the U.K.
Quite Fantastic.......2007-05-13
This was the first time I had ever heard the Scarlet Pimpernel's music. I first stumbled onto the fact that there was a Scarlet Pimpernel musical when I was surfing YouTube and came across a music video which consisted of a recording of 'Falcon in the Dive'.
I was spell-bound. After hearing snippets of some of the other songs, i ordered this CD. I was a little surprised when I got it to find some pieces that I didn't remember seeing in the libretto. However, I have since discovered that there are quite a number of different recordings with some variety in the pieces that are included.
It is a truly charming and impressive sountrack. Douglas Sills impressed me deeply with his wide range of talent. He transposes himself from a heart-wrenching sincerity (The Prayer) to a glriously hilarious foppishness (The Creation of Men, The Scarlet Pimpernel). For someone with such a wonderful voice, he does do an exquisitely inane laugh.
Christine Andreas was very sweet as Marguerite, though I felt she over-did the tremulo slightly.
I was blown away by Terrence Mann. His Chauvelin was magnificent. Powerful, passionate, soothing, and vengeful. In the musical, I felt, Chauvelin regained some humanity.
The pieces are clever and vibrant, covering an impressive range of emotions. The lyrics can be full of pathos, or extraordinarily witty, and I enjoyed the CD very much indeed.
The only regret I have is that I am unlikely ever to see the stage performance. I can heartily reccomend this soundtrack to anyone who enjoys the Scarlet Pimpernel, or indeed anyone who appreciates fine singing.

Heard selections on AOL Radio and had to get it!.......2007-07-16
I first heard the selections on AOL Radio by Carl Anderson ("Sarah") and Betty Buckley ("Five Boys") and tried to find the CD for two years. First I had to find the ACTUAL title of the CD and once I did, Amazon had it.
I have still not heard all the selections, but I am thoroughly happy with Carl Anderson, Betty Buckley, Linda Eder and James Garner as Abraham Lincoln. The list of contemporary artists is so inclusive and compiled of so much talent. Even though I am not a fan of all the music types, after reading the liner notes by Frank Wildhorn, I had a greater appreciation for the project concept. Do I like the CD? Unequivocably YES. I was very excited and happy to get my copy. Any Civil War history buff should enjoy this. And the music stands on its own merit. I like this CD. I am glad to have my own copy. You can get (almost) everything from Amazon!
History in Lyrics.......2007-01-10
I greatly enjoyed this score. The songs gave a broad perspective of human feeling in that awful time and some of the lyrics break your heart. I wish I could have seen the play and, when I told a friend (who is somewhat of a history buff) about it, she wanted to know if there was a video! Unfortunately, there is not. Thanks for a great experience.
Great show Great songs.......2006-08-09
Saw the show under the new name of for the glory in gettysburg..some of the stars that did the cd was in the gettysburg show....It was a great show...and the songs were great
OMG AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME.......2006-07-20
I saw this amazing show while in Gettysburg where it is now called FOR THE GLORY and believe me they need to put this back on broadway! The music is so moving yet its so modern it really catches the younger crowd. Getting this cd just brings me back to the theatre where I experienced this awesome musical!
VERY powerful.......2006-06-23
I saw this in NYC. I have this on CD and on my iPod. This is the most powerful album I ever heard. This album really communicates the pain everyone felt during the Civil War. Hootie and the Blowfish's song, "Freedom's Child", sounds like a rallying cry for all black people living in that difficult time. Linda Eder is her usual exemplary self and Amy Grant, Trisha Yearwood, Carl Anderson and other artists add to the experience. This is an excellent compliation which balances country, pop and even narration and a bit of rock, with Shiloh's track, "Judgement Day." In total, this is an extremely highly recommendable album, featuring 39 tracks of good, solid music.

This original cast album is delightful! I felt the passion from beginning to end!
soulful re-working of "The Wizard of Oz".......2007-04-18
THE WIZ is an endlessly-delightful soul/R&B musical reworking of "The Wizard of Oz", with both music and lyrics written by Charlie Smalls. Never has it been more perfectly performed than on the original 1975 Broadway cast album.
Stephanie Mills adds lots of lush, glossy vocals to her role of Dorothy; especially in the moving finale "Home" (which became Mills' theme song during the ensuing years). Mills also scores with "Soon As I Get Home", and "Be a Lion".
Playing Dorothy's misfit band of friends down the Yellow Brick Road are the superbly talented Hinton Battle as the Scarecrow, Ted Ross as the Cowardly Lion, and Tiger Haynes as the Tin Man.
Dee Dee Bridgewater plays the good witch Glinda, and her "If You Believe" is truly inspirational. Mabel King plays Evillene, the wicked witch, and she brings a soulful and sassy edge to her big number "Don't Nobody Bring Me No Bad News". Andre de Shields plays The Wiz himself.
This crisp recording is a great reminder of this truly classic Broadway production, which won seven Tony Awards (including Best Musical), and went on to run for over 700 performances.
You'll find yourself hitting the 'repeat' button for Stephanie Mills' "Home", and it will definitely stay on high-rotation in your CD player! A must for all Broadway fans.

Great recording of a great show!.......2006-06-05
Much like "Dreamgirls" after it, this album's concept was to play as a pop record to appeal to a broader audience, which is why there is a prologue instead of the show's full overture and some tracks fade out rather than end on a musical button. That aside, you have the great Stephanie Mills who originated the role of Dorothy, along with the sassy Andre de Shields in the title role and the awesome Mabel King as Evillene, the Wicked Witch, who later reprised her role in the 1978 film. As another reviewer mentioned earlier, missing are a few of the show's other gems: instrumentals, "Lion's Dream", "Emerald City Ballet", "Funky Monkeys", and vocal selections, "Who Do You Think You Are?", The Wiz's rendition of "If You Believe", and Glinda's beautiful anthem, "A Rested Body is a Rested Mind." Otherwise, a cast album worthy of any Broadway theater collection.
The orignal Broadway cast!.......2005-09-16
I saw this live performance and tried to tell my sweetheart about it. The movie didn't do the stage version justice! Now I own it. "Be a lion!"
Soulful Oz !.......2005-07-12
Arriving in the spring of 1975, "The Wiz" ( a "soulful" take on "The Wizard Of Oz") was not an immediate hit. After an strong marketing campaign and a Tony for Best Musical, "The Wiz" enjoyed a long stay on Broadway.
Stephanie Mills (who lated scored a pop hit w/ "Never Knew Love Like This Before") shines as Dorothy. Hinton Battle and Ted Ross are also terrific as the Scarecrow and Lion, respectively.
Best Tracks include:
Tornado (a disco-flavored instrumental)
I Was Born On The Day Before Yesterday
Ease On Down The Road (the show's primary hit)
I'm A Mean Ole Lion

Hedwig (John Cameron Mitchell) is a Berlin singer whose sex-change operation left her with an "angry inch" and a taste for eyeliner. Closer to the New York Dolls than to New York's post-Sondheimian composers, Mitchell and composer-lyricist Stephen Trask rehabilitate the decadent bombast of early-'70s glam rock in a succession of catchy numbers. Hedwig makes a great transition from stage to record because the book is wafer-thin and lets the band focus on individual songs instead of trying to integrate a narrative: this is indeed the most radio-friendly cast album in a long time. So what if Trask has never met a power chord he didn't like? It may not revolutionize the musical theater, but the grand finale, "Midnight Radio," will have you reaching for a lighter. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

SHEER ROCK MUSICAL PERFECTION. JOHN CAMERON MITCHELL AND STEPHEN TRASK ARE AMAZING. FUNNY TO ROCK OUT TO A SHOW SOUNDTRACK... THAT WAS A FIRST. BUT YOU CAN'T HELP YOURSELF. I PREFER THIS TO THE FILM SOUNDTRACK FOR NO OTHER REASON THAN IT HAS A RAW EDGE TO IT UNLIKE THE SLICK STUDIO TRACKS OF THE OTHER.

Great songs.......2005-10-18
This whole album is filled with so much emotion it makes you weep. Both the stage version and the film soundtrack are great albums if you are a fan of the show or not. No matter what anyone's personal views are or what they feel about the subject matter, you can't help but feel for this character and go with him/her on the journey.
The songs are angry, beautiful and full of raw emotion. Who doesn't understand "Wicked Little Town" sometimes?
Perfect Companion Piece.......2005-09-14
Even though I saw the show many years ago (with JCM), it took the film to get me to purchase the original soundtrack. I never felt a need to purchase the cast CD. However, I finally decided to take a chance and am very happy that I did. If you love the soundtrack, the cast CD adds another layer to the trauma of Hedwig. I enjoy listening to both of them equally.
Truly Great Album.......2005-06-26
I love this Album. Thats all. Anyway I can not stop listening to this CD. I listened to this only CD for four straight hours on a roadtrip. I still am not tired of this CD. Theres still little lyrics I have missed. If someone reading this does not buy the CD, there is seriously something wrong with you. Because its the best CD ever.

Though this is not the most recent Ray Charles box set collection, it may be the best. That's because it focuses on Ray's great growth in the 1950s, particularly his days with Atlantic Records. The set opens with Ray still in a Charles Brown, smooth-voice, mellow-piano mode, but in short order, he discovers his own identity. From the good time of "It Should Have Been Me" on disc one, though the orgiastic "What'd I Say, Parts 1 & 2" on disc three, the man they call "The Genius" rocks, rolls, raises the rafters, and sinks way down low with the blues. This box also features an excellent essay by the late music historian, Robert Palmer. --Robert Gordon
Customer Reviews:
A Beautiful Set.......2007-05-29
This boxed set is superbly packaged, CD 1 covers 1952 to 1954, CD 2 1954 to 1957 and CD 3 1957 to 1959. Theres a nice accompanying booklet which gives full credit to all the known musicians and there is a substantial written history of Ray Charles time at Atlantic records which must runs into thousand of words.
Jerry Wexler is quoted in these notes saying "In terms of purity and musical value, he cut his best sides for us. It was righteous roots music. It was intrinsically great music". So its no surprise that the music IS some of the best stuff Ray Charles ever did. A mixture of Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, Gospel and Blues that quite rightly is called the birth of soul.
Soul Starts Here!.......2006-06-08
Normally box sets are the audio equivalent of a Whitman's Sampler; there's a lot to choose from and you may not like everything in it, but that ain't this box set baby! Covering Brother Ray's tenure at Atlantic Records from 1952 to 1959 this box set encompasses most everything he recorded there and is pretty much the creation of soul music as we know it today. Here is Ray fusing R&B, gospel, swing, jazz, and pretty much anything else he put his fertile mind to. Listen to these recordings and it won't take long for you to figure out why Ray was called "the Genius." The tracks crackle with life and energy and thanks to the re-mastering they received they also don't crackle and pop like some of the older re-issues and re-releases. There's no guile and plenty of style here; there's also more recent re-releases of this material, but this packs in a whole lot more and is the superior collection if you ask me. If your foot isn't tapping and your fingers snapping then you don't have a pulse brother.
We Need a Sixth Star for Mr. Charles.......2005-12-31
Ray Charles was a musician free of genre or style. He could play Rock, R&B, Country, and Soul with equal talent and virtuosity. The fact that he was able to do this, coupled with his invention of Soul, is simply a miracle of modern popular music.
These recordings, marking the birth of Soul from the mind of the greatest musician in popular music, are to be cherished for the history the present. Every one of these recordings are evidence of the genius tht was Ray Charles. Some are quite simple in their arrangement, some vastly more intricate, yet every one expresses the powerful emotions that exude from the music and the man.
This collection is seminal in it's importance in recording the birth of a genre that founded the careers of some of our most important popular musicians. Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gay, The Pointer Sisters, Barry White, etc. The list could go on for pages, but I think the point is made.
This is the best box set ever made!.......2005-03-10
I have owned this box set for over 10 years now. I listen to all the time. I still get goosebumps everytime I hear the R&B that Ray defined. It covers the Atlantic time period where Ray finds his own and sets the goal for anyone and everyone to follow. You will never regret buying this set. I am buying another box set because I just know that I will burn the bits right off these. Can't live with out it!
Who Was Listening?.......2005-01-14
I was. I was just a kid, but there was a radio station, black-owned and black-operated, that played these songs. It was exciting and a little scary for me but not to be ignored. The mainstream stations played Sammy Kaye, Guy Lombardo, some Sinatra. The country stations, well, they played country music, some good and memorable, a lot not good. Times have changed several times over since then, but I can recall most of the songs on this great package. I can recite all of the best ones, but I invite you to buy it for yourself and listen. This is the essence of Ray Charles before he went exploring virtually every corner of the world of music which started in earnest after, well, "What'd I Say?". How great it must have been sitting in some fried chicken shack and listening to these tunes. It was a whole different time. But, darn, I was just a kid.
