The title cut is a world fusion favorite, as well as a favorite of mine. Baka Beyond melds acoustic world rhythms and near-wordless vocals in an ingratiatingly upbeat manner, though it can become tedious at times.

While I HIGHLY recommend the wonderful "Heart of the Forest" CD, comprised of field recordings of authentic Baka music, this "Spirit of the Forest" should be titled "Spirit of Exploitation." The original music and sounds of the Baka people are mixed with Western instrumentation that destroys the spirit of the forest and turns it into a "Dance Remix" pile of studio mush. It's way, way Beyond Baka alright. Forego this commercial bastardization and get the real thing, Heart of the Forest!

after seeing baka beyond live in concert recently we were compelled to pick up this recorded work. though it does not reproduce the unique energy of the concert,it pleases on other levels. when martin craddick and wife su hart lived with the baka pygmies in africa in 1992, it was no doubt a life altering experience. much of that comes through in the music presented on
"spirit of the forest". craddick,who's resume includes OUTBACK, a similarly genre busting project,teams with hart(vocals),paddy le mercier(another veteran of OUTBACK on violin and flutes)and members of the baka people who play percussion and several african instruments, to create a mellow listening experience based on a fusion of musical ideas. i paticularly like using this as background music for various endeavors, but there is plenty here for those who wish to have a provacative listening session as well. the warm commraderie the participants shared really comes through. i don't see how any fan of acoustic based alternative music will be disappointed in this recording. as an added incentive to explore this work, it is stated in the liner notes that "all performance and compositional royalties due to the baka for this album will be collected for them to use to protect their forest and to develop in a sustainable way without losing their knowlege or their culture."

I just bought this CD and WOW, I can't get enough of it. I can listen to it over and over again and each time my toes are tapping and the fingers are drumming. This CD is so up-beat and happy. Guaranteed I'll be buying more CD's by Baka Beyond.

    Imagine if you will that Metallica had been asked to do the soundtrack to Braveheart. That is what much of this album sounds like. I don't speak Finnish but I do enjoy this quite a bit. Where else does metal guitar and accordian gel so well?

    I was a huge Fintroll fan before I discovered this band, and I have to say that Kopiklaani isn't -quite- the same, but it's very good in a few other ways. This is, for the most part, a great companion to Fintroll because it still has some of the folk sound, but is less hard. If you're having not-so-great a day, and aren't really feeling like you want some HARD stuff, this is the band for you. My only complaint with the band as a whole (and with every album) is that some of the tunes are a bit repetetive. This especially sticks out in their beautiful musical pieces without singing. It doesn't make it any less beautiful, but after you've listened to it a few times, it starts to get old. I really enjoy this album, but highly advise anyone looking at this album to check out their newest "Tales Along This Road" first, as it is a much better album with a newer, not so "fuzzy" sound. After you check that out, then come back and grab this one up if you like what you heard. A great band if you like Fintroll, or if you're simply looking for something a little different.

    Definitely a unique album. Wikipedia correctly classifies Korpiklaani as Finnish Folk Metal, but this album is multilayered with haunting celtic and Central European elements. There are even some wooden flutes that - darned if they don't sound like something done in a Mexican Mayan performance. More experimental than metal, but metalheads will be comfortable with this album.

    I heard the song Pellonpekko on WSOU - Seton Hall Pirate Radio - and was spellbound. Korpiklaani clearly didn't make this album in order sell it to the mainstream - which is why the "in your face" metal fans in New Jersey think they are worth listening to.

    If some viking bards got caught in a time warp and met up with some heavy metal musicians, this is what I would expect to hear. The grooves, themes, and instruments of the traditional music blend seamlessly with the modern instruments and unmistakable metal attitude and style. I could not believe it when I first heard it. It totally WORKS musically. You really have to hear it to believe it, but I have played this for metal heads and people who don't much care for metal, and everyone loves it.
    The musicianship is outstanding, and the grooves just won't let you sit still. This is one of my all-time favorite albums.

    5 stars! 10 stars! This is some of the most hands down astounding music I have ever heard. I got this CD because I like Finntroll - and as much as I like Finntroll, their sound is a bit harsh to listen to too often, for me. Korpiklaani, however, is perfect, pure genius. I can listen to their music over and over again. The instrumentals are brilliant. And I disagree with those who don't like the vocals. I generally prefer not to have too much death growls in my metal, and the vocals here are on the cleaner side.. the guy's vocals are great, sexy even (I am a female so I can say this! heheheh). They are not too growly and yet nowhere near that high-pitched dramatic sometimes annoying male singing heard in a number of other metal bands.

    I see in other reviews that some people are comparing this band to Flogging Molly... admittedly I am not that familiar with them, but from the bits I've heard, I would disagree actually, to me they are a little more like Skyclad or Cruachan (but not celtic of course).

    I could not tell much difference between Spirit Of The Rainforest and Spirits of the Rainforest. Different packaging, different song titles, different time lengths on the songs, but basically the same music on both. Both have Diane and David, but both are put out on different labels. I love Spirits, which is why I bought Spirit of the Rainforest. I thought it might be a little more different than it is. Either one is fine and the other is not necessary unless you are an avid fan and want to see the difference.

    The second helping from this Atlanta quartet follows a similar path charted by their debut: guitar-heavy garage punk, ala the revivalist sounds of The Salvation Army, Chesterfield Kings and early Pandoras. Vocalist Cole Alexander spits out lyrics like an early Mick Jagger, with a dash of the bluesy swagger Jim Sohns brought to the Shadows of Knight. Plenty of fuzz guitar, lo-fi drums and microphone distortion round out a compellingly adrenal sound. Enhanced CD includes a Quicktime video of "Fad."

    This set tells you why Jussi Bjorling is a perennial entrant in the "Tenor of the Century" sweepstakes. Even as the voice darkens from the light lyric to the full, darker instrument of the later recordings, we hear a singer whose elegant style, lovely timbre and innate musicality touch the heart. Many of the selections are sung in Swedish, less of a liability than you might suppose. In whatever language, Bjorling's molten gold flows lavishly. He eschews the sobs and sentimentality that disfigure so much verismo repertory, making his points with stylish vocalism. He's been called a "cool" singer, but try his Puccini and Verdi arias on Disc One and you'll find more than enough vocal and emotional heat. The selections include many neglected Scandinavian songs, sung, like the arias, with a naturalness that disarms criticism. -- Dan Davis

    Swedish tenor Jussi Björling gets many votes for the distinction of greatest all-time tenor. Up to the end, the voice projected a boyish vulnerability, though he also had enough stentorian power to sing the heavy Puccini roles and was ready to take on Lohengrin when he died. He was so deeply musical he eschewed the usual tenor vulgarity without ever slighting the music's theatricality. Even these four well-filled discs of arias and songs can't fully encompass the vocal riches he left behind, but there's a lot here, much of it from his earliest years and (hope you don't mind) sung in a Swedish translation. --David Patrick Stearns

    This is an wonderful compilation of one of the most incredible voices on record. Whether you are a new or old Bjorling fan -- and who could hear that voice and not be enthralled by it -- this is a fine CD to have. The quality of the recording is excellent, and the range in years, from 1930 to 1959, gives a splendid overview of his dazzling talent. In addition to many of the arias one might expect, there are also lieder and songs in Swedish, as well as some charming duets with Jussi's wife, Anna-Lisa. I have quite a few other Bjorling CDs, and this is one of the best in terms of quality and scope. It is a most worthy addition to any Bjorling collection, regardless of its size.

    This is an excellent collection, the best available overview of a great tenor.

    This would get 4 stars but has been marked down for only supplying token texts and translations in the large booklet. It is understandable (sort of) that the Italian opera excerpts don't merit texts and translations as (apart from the Callas recitals series) EMI generally doesn't provide texts with historical issues. However the tempting inclusion of a dozen or so texts to the Italian and Swedish songs makes one all the more aware of the miserliness of not providing all the texts.

    When starting my Bjorling collection, I saw MANY CDs, with his early recordings. I was in a quandry as to what to buy, UNTIL I found this set. TRULY remarkable in many levels.FIRST and foremost, the voice. Captured in all levels, from the earliest to the latest. Truly wonderful, and the Swedish versions are a real treat to hear, don't worry, the Italian versions are here too!!Secondly, the remastering process. This set was remastered at Abbey Studios in London. For the first time I've heard, they actually pressed NEW 78s from the metal plates, and THEN remastered the new discs!!! Inspired, and the results--incredible.I find myself listening to Disc 3 the most. Very interesting, as it is the Swedish one. When the songs are terrific, along with the "standard" tenor arias, and it all comes together, it is PURE MAGIC!! I will admit that due to time limitations of recordings of this era, the opera house Bjorling is not fully conveyed. There are other CDs for that. Most notably "Romeo and Juliet", and for a REAL thrill, his ATLANTA concert, in STEREO, so much so, that the piano is even divided; left hand left, right hand right. Wait a minute, am I playing TWISTER??:-)) But if you want to skip all those unknown labels, you couldn't have a MORE complete set. ALL wit the great remastering I spoke of. Bjorling--His voice will NEVER die, at least in MY house!!!

    Jussi Bjoerling was one of the greatest singers of the century. His voice is pure, effortless and yet thrilling. Even better than the quality of the voice is his style. He never scoops up to a note nor does he ever whoop down from one, instead, he uses perfect legato and faultless intonation to deliver the cleanest sound you'll ever hear from a tenor.

    This collection, from the large set of EMI recordings, provides a wonderful survey of Bjoerling's career. He was a straight 'spinto' tenor, that is, between a lyrical tenor (like Pavarotti) and a dramatic tenor (like Domingo). Most of the Puccini roles demand a spinto and those are the roles that Bjoerling was unbeatable in (particularly Des Grieux in Manon Lescaut). However, I think I most prize this collection for the songs sung in English on the last disc. I had some of them on a cassette I wore out in the car and others on a vinyl disc I wore out at home. For shear beauty of voice, the Berceuse by Jocelyn is stunning. For perfect diction, intonation and style, Love but a Day is breathtaking. Buy this set and I guarantee you'll fall in love with what many think is the finest voice on record.

        I think it's a con!! This is not at all helpful for any serious meditator or anyone who just wants to be relaxed, because in this tape there is some ghostlike sound effect totally masking the background of forestish environment. This is not only too noisy but it sounds too stupid and repetitive, just spoiling everything. You really cannot hear birds or stream. The producer must have thought that the listeners of this kind of environmenal tapes are very naive. I am not particularly fussy. I even tried listening to this tape while I was having a bath only to find that it irritates me a lot. Frankly, I would go for the 3rd movement of Bruckner's symphony 8th, if you like spiritual yet quite repetitive sound.

        This album has an incredible effect on the listener.The continuous track goes deep in your unconscious and transforms and relaxes in a rejuvenating and refreshing way. I would highly recommend this CD to all who love meditaive and relaxing music.
