Aoife is the daughter of and niece of members of the Clancy Brothers, the U.S.-based Irish stars of the '60s folk craze. Although she has clearly inherited the family preference for acoustic music, her approach owes more to the current crop of female singer-songwriters than to her Aran-sweatered forebears. Even when singing traditional material, she's an everywoman who could be from anywhere; her style doesn't owe a great debt to any single nationality. Her flowing alto is framed by tranquil, well-crafted acoustic arrangements; the sequences with a solo piano are especially effective. She has chosen an eclectic set list, which includes Australian poet Henry Lawson, the Weavers, and Ron Kavana. The closing duet with her dad is a charmer, but the most unforgettable track is "Across the Blue Mountains," an Appalachian ballad on which she displays an atypically gritty edge. --Christina Roden

Kindler, Gentler Music.......2007-04-17
This combination of musical scores from two of Doris Day's earlier movies is an album one can listen to again and again, each time savoring the gentle flavor of the time the songs were scored. We miss these simple love ballads today, and must revert to "oldies" to rekindle the spirit. These "oldies" are among the best there are.
Not what I expected.......2005-10-08
I'm a huge Doris Day Fan. I was very excited to find this CD. However, it's my own fault for not reading the description closely enough. If you are a fan of the On Moonlight Bay/By the Light of the Silvery Moon movies, you will be disappointed to learn that the male portions of the songs are NOT performed by Gordon MacRae. Lyrics are different than in the movies - it was just not very enjoyable. Doris' performances, as always, a pleasure - but vocals by Gordon MacRae would have made this a top-notch "must have".
The soundtracks to two of her best musical on one CD!!.......2003-12-08
You I'm just 16 years old and I'm smart enough to know that Doris Day is the worlds most underrated singer. This cd is her best, you get two soundtracks to her best two musical on one CD!!! You get all the Songs from Moonlight Bay, and Silver Moon. This is fun music the whole family will enjoy. It's great make out mood music too baby!!!
Great Day At The Movies.......2001-10-26
The music on this cd is culled from two of Doris Day's best musicals. The songs range from upbeat and happy to sweetly sentimental. They lift your spirits and help you focus on the positive and beautiful sides of life. No wonder Doris was the number one box office attraction for more than ten years! We sure could use her today!
not her best work.......2001-02-20
This CD is from two films with Doris Day; Moonlight Bay and By the Light of the Slivery Moon, both appropriately with "moon in the title because they are indeed moony. Basically, the only reason you will enjoy this CD is either because you like the films a lot or because you LOVE Doris Day. While Doris Day sings lesser material better than most others sing good songs, you probably should stick with her hits.

Customer Reviews:
Soulful Celtic.......2007-05-03
I first heard the title piece "Silvery Moon" on AOL Radio's Celtic station. As you know, many times one song that you love from an album doesn't always apply to the rest of the songs on the album. This is one very pleasant exception; I love every piece on "Silvery Moon."
I highly suggest it if you appreciate today's Celtic works.
Quietly Beautiful.......2002-10-21
I picked up a copy of this CD at the Dublin (Ohio) Irish Festival after hearing Aoife perform the wistful "Across the Blue Mountains." I had to hear more, and I'm not at all disappointed.
Aoife (former soloist with Cherish The Ladies) explores the classic and contemporary folk music of the British Isles and Appalachia on this third solo recording. The arrangements are appropriately soft and acoustic, as they naturally complement Aoife's voice. Several songs have a bluegrass sound - think of Alison Krauss & Union Station.
Highlights are without a doubt "Across the Blue Mountains" with the sweet harmony vocals of Julee Glaub and Aoife O'Donovan, and "Kisses Sweeter than Wine," a duet with her father, Bobby Clancy. "The Nightbird" and "Are You Sleepin', Maggie" also stand out as lightly Irish-tinged soft folk gems.
I gave a rating of 4 out of 5 stars because it would be nice to hear some more upbeat songs here, and I know Aoife could do an amazing job with those. This is quiet night music, which is fine, but it leaves you wanting a bit more.

Customer Reviews:
Gene Clark - Under the silvery moon.......2005-02-28
The record is still great, but where is the 2CD set with 29 tracks that was announced and that I've bought in a regular record shop ?
COULD HAVE BEEN GREAT.......2004-03-28
It is rumored that these songs are a selection of 80 - 90 songs that were recorded by a band that included Rick Danko and Nicky Hopkins in the period 1985-87. My complaint with this album is that, for reasons unknown to me, that they left off some of the best Gene Clark penned tunes, such as "Lionna," "Washington Square," and "The Panther," in preference of lesser songs. If they (the producers, the compilers, whoever) had chosen to put the BEST of these sessions on to one disc, it would, in my opinion, be one of Gene's best albums. They did not. However, I still give it five stars, because, if I had done the choosing, maybe seven or eight of these songs would have made it on the album, and Gene's incredible song-writing and singing ability, even on some of his lesser songs, makes it better than 99% of the stuff that's out there. Gene was one of the 20th century's greatest song writers and singers, certainly ranking with Richard Thompson, Shane MacGowan, Van Morrison, and a few others, and sooner or later, he will be granted his rightful place. Until then, we can only wait for the release of his many so far un-released recordings, and enjoy the music.
Under The Silvery Moon - Gene Clark & others.......2004-01-08
For the most part, I agree with Randall Adams' review. At first listen I was disappointed with "Under The Silvery Moon" because it wasn't what I expected. It doesn't have the sound you expect from a Gene Clark CD. But after a few more listen's, I did learn to like it - like Randall, I give 3 & half stars. The CD includes a large booklet full of information and pictures. If you are a big Gene Clark fan, buy it.
If you are a Gene Clark fan, his live "Silhouetted In Light" with Carla Olson is a must - a great CD that I listen to over and over again. Also not bad is his studio album with Carla Olson, "So Rebellious A Lover". Both deliver what you expect from Gene Clark, and Carla Olson's vocals match up well with Gene's.
"Under A Silvery Moon" is a good, but not great Gene Clark CD.
Interesting sidetrack.......2003-11-24
According to the liner notes, the material on this disc dates from the mid 1980s. The songwriting credits are shared by a person named Pat Robinson whose project studio was used for many of the recordings. Apparently Mr. Robinson and Gene collaborated on some film music and it is possible that a few of the tracks on here were made with that intention.
For Gene Clark completists, this set is essential. "Mary Sue," "Sleep Will Return" and "Dangerous Games" in particular add to the classic Gene Clark ouvre. Two tracks, John York's enjoyable "You Just Love Cocaine" and the less distinctive "Can't Say No" are sung respectively by York and Pat Robinson, possibly with Gene in the background. There are two covers: a tedious (and for me unlistenable) "Don't You Know" on which Gene is doing a bit of an Elvis Presley impression and "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" with an unfortunately out-of-pitch guitar prominently placed in the mix. There is another (I believe earlier) version of "Fair and Tender Ladies."
Stylistically, this is actually a very pop-oriented collection. The arrangements, which often rely heavily on synthesizer, occasionally remind me of the ornate backing to "Only Colombe." This is not a bad thing, but just be aware that this collection does not exhibit the country side of Gene. The one obvious country song "Rest of Your Life" is denied a country instrumental backing. It might be fair to regard this collection as a more primitive "Firebyrd." The playing credits include Nicky Hopkins, who is probably the keyboardist responsible for the more ornate keyboard work that pops up from time to time on here. I am guessing that John York is the same person who played bass in the Byrds in 1968 and 1969.
I rate this disc at about three and one-half stars. The project studio recordings obviously cannot match the sound of fully-produced commercial recordings, but they are not at all bad considering that this material pre-dates the era of easy digital recording. There are a few tracks from a regular studio including the aforementioned "Mary Sue."
I am very much in favor of the late issuance of Gene's various aborted projects and am therefore very grateful for this collection. My comments here are not intended to discourage the Gene Clark fan from purchasing this disc, but just to make it clear that this is not a collection of major-label financed recordings that sat in the can. It is not "Roadmaster" by any means. It is more like "Gypsy Angel" with other people involved.

Customer Reviews:
Golden memories of a good saxaphone sound.......2007-02-15
Billy Vaughn was the recording orchestra for Dot Records back in the 50-70s. This box set is a compilation of a good portion of his recordings during this time. This product comes out of Germany and sounds at times as though it was copied from some of the original vinyl recordings as there is an occasional 'pop'. Over all the recordings are excellent and bring back many memories if you were in to the music of that time. For the purchase price being asked it is a very good value compared to prices of purchasing individual or album recordings from other venues. I would definitely buy this box set again.
spitfire from North Dakota.......2005-10-27
If you like Billy you'll love this box set, everything is there
Billy Vaughn's Golden Instrumentals.......2004-08-09
In 1963 my Dad purchased a new stereo system and several LP's;
among them was the stereo version of "Golden instrumentals" by
Billy Vaughn, Dot 25016. I was only thirteen then, but that record became, and still is, one of my all time favorites. I have been looking for a reissue of it on CD, and the only way to
get it was to buy this Bear Family box set. Since I like the Billy Vaughn sound, I went ahead and bought it. I was surprised to find out that Billy Vaughn recorded this album in monaural in
1956, and that is the version included in this set. In 1958 he recorded these same tunes in stereo, none of which are included.
After listening carefully, I have decided that I like both versions of these "Golden Instrumentals" recordings equally well, and that all of the rest is icing on a very tasty cake. Mr. Vaughn had the ability to cover a tune and make it his own. After forty years, most of these have stood the test of time. I thoroughly enjoy most of the music on this set. I will purchase the next box set when Bear Family releases it.
If you like Billy Vaughn, buy this set! "Blue Tango", "Petite
Fleur", and the mono versions of "Golden Instrumentals" are highlights.
Good start but.........2004-02-09
I echo the review done by the first person. I think this was a good start by Bear Records but they missed the mark. Yes, these are all good recordings by Billy Vaughn but what he was famous for is not truly represented here.
I wish Bear Records will release all of his Twin-saxophone recordings as a set. I and a lot of my friends have been wanting to buy his twin-saxophone recordings.
good bear billy.......2001-11-02
as usual this is a fine Bear product of a fine Billy Vaughn product the music is up to Billy's early quality. Most of this I believe was done before he really developed his twin saxophone trademark sound, which I believe really makes him unique to listen to.
Hopefully the Bear family will do a volume 2 box set and continue into his later songs which be a delight to all their fans as well as to Billy's

Customer Reviews:
It talks to your soul!.......2005-02-08
I first had the experience of hearing Kate's "Some Names and Hearts" back in 1987 --- and I was thrilled to see her first CD release. This is a must buy for anyone looking for music that simply touches the soul. Her music is full of emotion and life --a style that reflects many famous female artists but maintains something very unique and inspiring. I just love it! Hopefully more CDs will be forthcoming ---!!!
A treasure.......2005-01-29
I've had the pleasure of learning Irish from Kate as well as hearing her make music and tell stories. She is a gifted composer and instrumentalist, and she has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard, with a personality to match. This CD is sure to delight.
Wonderful and Haunting Musical Voice.......2005-01-25
I have been a fan of Kate's music for many years, so I was very pleased when she released a full album of music. This cd contains many of her older songs known from open mic sessions as well has several new songs that I had not heard before. The Coldest Room has certainly surpassed Medusa's Hands as my favorite song that Kate sings; additionally, it has become one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time.
Kate's music style and voice are hard to pin down. She has many interests and many influences, but I would recommend her to anyone who likes Tori Amos or Sarah McLachlan.
