About the Artist
Having grown up in Lubbock, Texas, Beth is classically trained in piano, violin, harp and voice. After spending two years studying voice at Brevard College in North Carolina, Beth moved on to The University of Texas, where she picked up a degree in Literature and her first guitar. Teaching herself guitar, she joined a band and became part of the Austin music scene. After a few years of playing around Austin in her band, and then in a duo, Beth returned to the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina, and there became a stand-out in the Asheville songwriters' community. Now an established singer/songwriter, she occasionally resides in Arlington, Texas, while continuously touring to support her four independent releases, WOODWORK (1996), NEW BLOOD (1998), LATE NIGHT RADIO (1999), and the newly released GHOSTWRITER (2001).

Beth is the complete package: a thoughtful creative songwriter, a talented multi-instrument musician, a gifted and well-trained voice, a work ethic learned early in life, and an unassuming charm and humility that defines charisma. Beth has been embraced by both pop and folk critics and fans. Her writing has a diverse range of influences, but her lyrical and melodic hooks give her songs a real pop element.

She has performed at numerous festivals: Music Midtown, Bele Chere Festival, SXSW, Kerrville Folk Festival, Nectarfest, Mandarin Folk Festival, Cottonwood Arts Festival, Dogwood Festival, Grapefest and Riverbend Festival.

While touring throughout the country, Beth has played with such artists as Steve Winwood, David Crosby, John Gorka, Shawn Colvin, Sara Hickman, Pierce Pettis, Jennifer Kimball Jonatha Brooke, Amy Ray, Ellis Paul, Freedy Johnston, Chris Whitley, David LaMotte, Chris Rosser and many other great artists.

Roaming a psychedelic no-man's land where Tom Waits and Jack Kerouac might converge, Stan Ridgway is an inimitable singer and precision essayist whose song characters wear life's grit under their fingernails. It's doubtful Ridgway ever broke the legs of a no-goodnik named Bing, but gosh darn if you're not thoroughly convinced of it by the end of "Bing Can't Walk," one of a handful of creaky, ramshackle gems gathered together on the odds-and-sods Holiday in Dirt. He may scribble outside the lines musically, but Ridgway's harp-goosed, art-rock vignettes are enormously detailed--witness the bloopy, futuristic "After the Storm," the eerily straight-faced midtempo rocker "Whatever Happened to You?" or the unlisted cover of Charlie Rich's "Behind Closed Doors," cheekily delivered in a character that might have been crafted by Bill Murray circa Caddyshack. Admittedly an acquired taste, Ridgway repays diligence with cartwheeling, consistently unexpected, possibly true parables sucked straight out of the twilight zone that is contemporary America. If Jackson Pollack paintings had sound, they'd probably sound a lot like this. --Kim Hughes

For people who must have everything Stan Ridgway recorded, this is another item for their collections. I only want the good stuff. Apart from Beloved Movie Star, this is material that never goes anywhere. Reviewer Lon Jones was objective about this album -- it is a mish-mash of inconsequential and incomplete work. I won't discourage people from buying the CD, however, this should be the last Stan Ridgway album on your list to purchase. First get Partyball, Anatomy, Mosquitos, then The Big Heat, Black Diamond, and Snakebite. If you're still hungry for more, then Holiday in Dirt is just the ticket for you.

He's My Beloved Movie Star.......2004-12-18

Stan Ridgway is not for everybody, agreed. However, I have never ever grown tired of listening to any of his songs. When I heard that he had a CD of unreleased songs, I might have been a tad suspect. However, I remembered that I liked every one of his songs he ever made. So I bought this CD and I love it. Moreover, with "My Beloved Movie Star", Stan delivers one of his greatest songs to date. This guy is the Patron Saint of LA Honkey Tonk on a Casio. I can't get enough.

Let's Cut the Holiday short.......2004-02-19

I like Stan, but this one is just a mish-mash of leftovers that didn't make it onto previous albums, usually with good reason. I was very disappointed with this CD and recommend that you give it a miss.

Not Bad, for a B-sides album.......2003-11-17

I don't mind B-sides albums, and R.E.M.'s Dead Letter Office is one of the best I've enjoyed, but parts of Holiday in Dirt seem a little underdone. Stan's goof on Bing Crosby's drunken fall into an orchestra pit, breaking both his legs, is my favorite on the album. I like Stan's sense of humor, and my favorite tracks are always the Garage Band '69's. I could do without My Beloved Movie Star though. It's an interesting montage of Stan's career, the leftovers that never made it on to the final album. All in all, a decent grab bag of Ridgway's music.

Vintange Stan!.......2002-09-27

"Holidays in Dirt" is a remarkably cohesive album, considering that it's made up of rare and/or unreleased material. In fact, it holds up as well as any of Stan's better albums, and sounds more like an album than "Anatomy" (which to me felt more like it was cobbled together from bits and pieces).

HID has everything that has endured me to SR over the years. Losers and hard luck cases and guys named Pete whose lives didn't turn out quite the way they planned. Moments of joy and moments of desperation and moments of unbearable angst. Atmosphere pieces that make you check in the closets and under the bed.

Great for late night studying.......2004-05-28

I bought this album after seeing it displayed at Borders in 2000. The album has a great bluesy-jazzy-pop feeling, and a lot of the songs are perfect for singing along. Beth Wood has a great voice, and this album helped me get through the summer of 2000 while I was studying for the bar exam, and after 4 years, is still a favorite for listening to at work or in the car. I would recommend it to anyone who likes listening to quality singer-songwriters.

Beth Wood has always been a lot of fun to listen to, but this album is evidence that she's really developing into a singer/artist to be reckoned with. Truly outstanding.

i saw beth wood in concert and it was the first time i had hear any of her music, i thought she was an amazing performer, and about her cd, it is wonderful, it blends a strong guitar player with a young, charismatic sounding voice...i recommend checking this one out! her song writing is moving and playful but yet refined and mature, she is sure to be a big star in the future!

Album Description

Much of this music comes from a different time and place, when swing was king, smoky dance halls resonated with acousic jazz & swing, and bluegrass music was was evolving from the roots of the Appalachian Mountains and melding with the blues. Music that faded with the onslaught of rock, yet was such a great influence on it. A mix of vintage swing, bluegrass, western swing, folk; covers and originals. All tied together by great playing on acoustic instruments; resophonic guitar (Dobro-tm),upright bass, mandolin, guitar, & fiddle. Vocals range from high & lonesome three part harmony, to sultry solos. The songs come all over the place; Benny Goodman, Bill Monroe, Red Foley, Asleep at the Wheel, the movie "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou", and Red Knuckles & the Trailblazers. Diane's originals span swing and bluegrass, but don't confuse the two.
