Product Description
The depth of Toshi Reagon's songwriting skills is matched only by the range and versatility of her voice, which is the lead vocal, the back-up, and often the rhythm section. With an acoustic guitar and occasional percussion accompaniment, Reagon's voice soars, and her sound is at once intimate and electrifying. This music is rhythm-infused: as much gospel and blues as hip-hop. It is the sound of Reagon's roots--gospel, folk, and blues--merged with her brand of urban acoustic. Kindness is an intimate encounter with Reagon's heritage . Kindness is...dominated by Reagon's fiery commitment to life and justice. -Out

1 out of 5 stars A beautiful voice - wasted.......2007-07-10

I was introduced to Mary Fahl via October Project. I had never heard anything like them before or since and Fahl's voice is nearly beyond compare with anyone else, though as an earlier reviewer said, Annie Lennox and Carly Simon come close. I just don't think they have Fahl's range.
So, you can imagine after October Project's demise, I was looking forward to hearing more of Fahl. After-all, a voice like that just can't be silenced.
Too bad it wasn't - at least for the garbage on this album. Redemption is probably the only song that shows what she can do with her voice. The rest is just a waste of her talents. God, I certainly hope she does not go down the same road that Karen Carpenter did and make everything she sings sound like a funneral dirge. She's trying very hard with the muck written for this album to do just that. The writing credits alone should have been enough to give it away right there. HOW many people does it take to write ONE song? Apparently as many as want to have a say in it for this disaster. Listen, if you start getting more than two people tossing in their two cents worth on any one song, you had better consider not writing it, much less trying to sing it. It is going to sound like a collage of miss-matched ideas and influences. Gee - just like most of the music (if you can call it that) on this album! I certainly hope that Mary Fahl will be able to find another record label willing to take her on when her current one dumps her for this waste of money and resources - with the priviso of course that all she does is sing the songs a talented songwriter creates for her.

2 out of 5 stars only 3 good song.......2007-01-11

still, october proyect is the best and her voice is the best, but this cd is not the greates but think about if you like her and then buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Perfect.......2007-01-09

The more I listen to this cd the more I am entranced with it. I have enjoyed Mary Fahl's voice since October Project. I am eagerly awaiting some more new material. She has a very powerful and touching voice. I gain something new each time I listen to her voice, music and lyrics. Thank you Mary!

4 out of 5 stars Emotional Voice.......2006-06-09

Since when the founder October Project came to an end, Mary's voice was already one one of the highlights of the band. And this is proved here. A very good debut album!

3 out of 5 stars Style departure.......2005-08-14

Like previous reviewers, I too was sceptical about this CD."The
Great Unknown" seems to be an October Project track right off, billowing, inspiring and lush, you would never know the difference. It is my favorite. The rest of the songs really take a departure in style from what I am used to hearing from Mary. Though enjoyable, she seems to be searching for an audience. I hope she continues to put out sounds which can inspire and provoke thought in their writing without getting too sentimental. Pretty girl, great voice, don't let them change your style.

Amazon.com essential recording

Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Richard Thompson and then-wife Linda had achieved a cruel victory with their final album together, Shoot Out the Lights, a riveting classic drawing much of its power from frank allusions to their disintegrating marriage. That preoccupation with the Thompsons' personal history may explain why at the time fans scrutinized the first Thompson solo album after the breakup, 1983's Hand of Darkness, for fresh wounds ("A Poisoned Heart and a Twisted Memory") and new evidence ("Tear Stained Letter"). Fans thus missed a more fundamental issue--the de facto reunion of Thompson's first band, Fairport Convention, with Fairport's original producer Joe Boyd at the controls. Only violinist Dave Swarbrick is missing, with Simon Nicol, Dave Peggs, and Dave Mattacks all present and accounted for, augmented by twin saxes, John Kirkpatrick's always-evocative accordion, and Clive Gregson's, John Hiatt's, and Bobby King's vocals. Hardly surprising, then, that this set should hold up so well, or that its nine solid Thompson originals should be so fully realized. --Sam Sutherland

This disc has "Hand of Kindness" ... it is as good of a song as ANY that Thompson has done ... it has to be heard. I'm not crazy about all the songs on this disc, ... but "Hand of Kindness" is brilliant. "The Wrong Heartbeat" and "How I Wanted To" are excellent, too. When someone hasn't heard of Thompson before, and there are far too many who haven't, play them "Hand of Kindness" ... it's deeply tense with outrageous guitar ... Richard at his best. This is also the only place you'll find it.

5 out of 5 stars Picks Up Where `Lights` Left Off, Adds A Little Zydeco.......2003-03-15

The sound of this album is very similar to`Shoot Out the Lights`, only now Thompson has added a brass band and other zydeco touches. The songs are generally top-notch, and while many deliver the gloom and/or vitriol we`ve come to expect from Thompson, there a couple of lighter moments, including `Two Left Feet`. Like on `Shoot out the Lights`, the electric guitar playing is mesmerising. This was his last great album with producer Joe Boyd- the next, Àcross a Crowded Room` has its moments, but it also has less enjoyable moments. And, for those who for whatever reason hate Michell Froom`s production work on later RT albums, the production style here will likely be more to their liking.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated Gem.......2002-09-24

Coming from any other artist, this would certainly be rated 5 by most listeners. It's my favorite RT solo album. I think it's the closest to a live sound of any of his studio recordings. RT's humor slips through the gloomy facade that he cloaks himself in. At least give the songs a listen. You might like it too.

5 out of 5 stars Both Ends Burning.......2002-06-03

In terms of his post SHOOT OUT THE LIGHTS output, HAND OF KINDNESS is one of his best, yet most underrated efforts. RUMOR & SIGH deserves all it's praise, & though not as flashy, this ranks as one of his most consistantly engaging efforts.

If SHOOT was the "divorce album", 1983's KINDNESS is the new fangled bachelor who's sense of freedom seems shackled by doubt and regret.

The toe-tapping exuberence of "Tear Stained Letter" & "Poisoned Heart" are deceptive. Jaunty as they are both have their fair share of acid wit with lines like, "when I die of shame, I won't know who to thank".

In terms of the ballads, "Devonside" is the major standout. One of his finest & yet oddly least well known. Elsewhere, Thompson lets his characteristic guard down for the regretful & haunting, "How I Wanted To".

With it's dark solos & snarling vocal, the title track would have easily been at home on SHOOT. A plea for the mercy of a kind hand, coming from a man with a rope around his neck. In the end, he leaves you dangling with, "you stretch out your hand and I'll stretch out mine".

Another stand out is, "Where the Wind Don't Whine". What starts off as a reckless joy ride with an underage hitchhiker turns out to be a good old fashioned ghost story.

Whether he's laying his throat bare to the dagger or driving it into another's back, Thompson is in fine form here. Aided and abetted by a tight backing band and guitar playing that is expressive but never induldgent, HAND OF KINDNESS is at the very least, one of the best, if not THE best record he put out in the '80's.

Album Description

Headlights deliver a pop masterpiece. This record is alive with a pulse that beats with shoegaze spirit. Through its veins runs the lifeblood of an indie pop band not afraid to incorporate a synth wall of sound and a mod organ in consecutive songs. There's a synthesis of keyboards and guitars, of vocals, of ethereal programming and huge drums; a solidification of lyrics centered on the ups and downs we all experience.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Sounds like..........2007-04-02

Others have written good reviews of this album already, so I'm keeping mine short and simple: Headlights sound like the band Stars (of "Set Yourself on Fire," "Heart" and "Nightsongs"). The melodies are similar, they do the male/female harmonizing vocals, etc. If you're a Stars fan, this band is definitely worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars - Excellent Indie-Pop.......2007-03-26

Polyvinyl has added another star to their roster, folks. Formed less than three years ago by Tristan Wraight, Erin Fein, and Brett Sanderson, they've had a short yet bright career--a trend that continued earlier this year for the Champaign, Illinois natives as they recently set out on a European tour. With their new release, Kill Them With Kindness, Headlights somehow melds melancholy atmosphere and up-beat rhythms with a rare ease that's hard to pin down.

The album's first four tracks set the tone for the rest of the album, and are possibly the strongest on the album. A prime example of the band's ability to meld melancholy and optimism would be the atypical opener, "Your Old Street," with its three minute string-quartet intro that leads into a mellow chorus in which vocalist Erin Fein sings of nostalgia and childhood amidst chimes and a rolling bass-line.

"TV," has to be the most easily likeable song on the album, with Wraight adding his vocals to Fein's while infectious guitars dominate the track. The atmospheric "Put Us Back Together Right," has an unpolished beauty to it, and "Pity City" sees Wright with the lead vocal for the first time, a track that ends with a well-done yet simple duet.

Fein and Wraight compliment each other well--Fein with her breathy alto and Wright's hush-hush attitude, and they really shine on tracks like "Lullabies," and "Signs Point to Yes, (Outlook Not So Good)". But one could say that Fein has the better stand alone voice, adding her luscious keyboards to tracks like "Owl Eyes" and the make-you-move "Hi-Ya!" Headlights seem to be poised to become Indie legends with only an EP and a first-album that falters only rarely. With Kill Them With Kindness, Headlights succeeds where many bands stumble right out of the gate.

5 out of 5 stars musicforants.com review.......2006-09-03

I've been practically obsessive over this band (who our described as "shoegazey dream piano pop rock sound that's full of guy/girl harmonies and multi-layered synths" since I heard a couple songs of their's randomly on the internet this summer.

The amazing part of Headlights' Kill Me With Kindness is what a full listening experience the album gives you from start to finish. It's one of the few albums this year that I'd prefer to listen to as a whole instead of as individual tracks. For a young band, they really know how to piece an album together.

There's some obvious highlights on the CD, and two of them come early in the CD with "TV" and "Put Us Back Together", both of which have been floating around the internet for some time now. The momentem built with these two songs is tremendous and afterwards the band only let's down slightly. That is, until mid-album when they rip through "Lions", a song that's guitar riff would fit nicely on Cheap Trick's Heaven Tonight. The latter half of the album treats us to an interesting variety of songs like the bouncy "Lullabies" that is premised like many of Spoon's best songs and the Mates of State-ish "Hi-Ya". By the time you get to what is essentially the album's closer, "Signs Point to Yes", you're in shoegaze heaven and all you want to do is put the album in and listen again. Highest Recommendation!

4 out of 5 stars Stunning. One of 2006's Best!.......2006-09-02

You know that part in an album, any album, where about halfway through you begin to tire of the music you are listening to? I'm not saying that the music is necessarily bad, or even that you are bored with the album, but inevitably, every album has a moment in which the music seems to dwell quietly in the back of your mind. You lose focus. You momentarily tune it out, only to come back to it later. Essentially, you are not paying as much attention to the album as you were when you first listened to it. You know that part?

Forget about it!

That's pretty much what Headlights is saying with their debut album "Kill Them With Kindness." What begins as a nice, overwhelmingly lush, atmospheric, indie pop-rock album suddenly transforms itself into a sunny-pop album along the lines of Rooney or The Most Serene Republic. Though you might question whether or not the song "Lions" is the same band that's playing the song "Pity City," ultimately Headlights maintains a pretty solid sound throughout the album, satifying any doubts you may or may not have.

At first listen, I was a bit unconvinced. Headlights didn't sound as if it differentiated itself from the current overflow of indie rock out there, but I gave it another listen, which soon turned into listen after listen after listen. Quite simply, I can't stop. The songs on this album range from the beautiful ("Songy Darko") to the fun ("Hi-Ya!") and, more often than not, somewhere in between these two sentiments ("Owl Eyes"). In every aspect of the phrase, "Kill Them With Kindness" is a blast!

I recently read another review on this album from a pretty respected website that reviewed the album fairly poorly, based largely on the album's diversity and purported "lack of focus." I disagree entirely. Diverse, sure, but Headlights maintains its focus throughout the album, never sounding like they can't decide what kind of music they want to play. This isn't Fountains of Wayne's "Welcome Interstate Managers," arguably the most unfocused album of all time with country, punk, rock, and pop all on one album (which the aformentioned website gave a higher rating than "KTWK," by the way). No, Headlights has managed to craft a delicious little indie-rock gem. "Kill Them With Kindness" is one of the most refreshing albums to come out in 2006, and one of the freshest debuts of recent memory. Keep an eye out for these guys.

Recommended for fans of Rooney, The Most Serene Republic, Rogue Wave, Rilo Kiley, and anyone who is interested in hearing one of the best indie-rock albums of the year.

Dan Snaith's Manitoba project is back with a new name but his hypnotic music hasn't changed. Caribou, like Manitoba, is still heavy on electronic jam sessions, with peculiar swirls of sound and stoned instrumental wanderings leading you who-knows-where. The Milk of Human Kindness also has that faint whisp of `60s bubblegum pop (see "Bees") and Stereolab-like drone present on Manitoba records like Up In Flames. Such reference points provide welcome toeholds in the midst of all the laptop anarchy, preventing the whole thing from drifting off into the ether. Snaith puts a few other twists on Milk, with mixed success. On the plus side, the sharp opener "Yeti" is a quick burst of fun, while "Lord Leopard" knocks up the beat a notch toward hip-hop territory. The lamentable "A Final Warning," however, falls off the deep end into an almost comedic dead-end. Still, Snaith continues to show off boundless creativity, and when he conjures the right mix of chaos and cohesion like he does on "Brahminy Kite," the result is a glorious noise all his own. -Matthew Cooke

Album Description

The first record after changing the band's name from MANITOBA to CARIBOU, DAN SNAITH delivers a heavy set of his most developed music to date, touching on influences as distinct and impressive as Neu! and Soft Machine. Full of life and tasteful production/instrumentation, this art record's got antlers, though still progresses like a more delicate animal.

4 out of 5 stars Something To Dunk Your Cookies Into.......2007-04-03

People hear the word "electronica" and who-knows-what materializes in their minds. The genre (just like it's name) is so indefinable as to make naming it an exercise in anonymous redundancy. It's about as effective as labels like "guitar music" or "mystery novel" or "independent film." Unfortunately, many musicians and labels take advantage of that ambiguity to pump out and pre-package albums that have as much going for them as a bowl of warm rocks. The "genre" isn't something to hide behind -- it is a limitless resource of musical wealth.

Caribou, once Manitoba, have done with "electronica" what Zepplin did with "guitar music," what Christie did with "mystery novels," what Aronofsky did with "independent film." If electricity is the medium, then Caribou has sculpted everything from splintery lightning bolts ("A Final Warning") to the hum of static cling ("Drumheller"). "The Milk of Human Kindness" is truly poetic, an artistic realization made of ones and zeroes.

The only consistent thread of the songs is their all-encompassing ingenuity. Each track is a neural brainstorm, an unpredictable crackle of musical static, but none of them sound the same. "Pelican Narrows" is an eerily patient organ-and-bells number. "Bees" is a clean-n-muddy retro-pop ditty. "Hello Hammerheads," "Yeti," and "Barnowl" play with finger cymbals, off-key humming, and restless commercial noise to make songs that are playfully aggressive, aural acrobatics that are amazing but not showy, just great music.

It's too bad the album is so short because, as the saying goes, time flies when you're having fun. The record is barely forty minutes long, but you'll swear it's ten; that's how good it is. Maybe next time Caribou can give us an entire gallon of that "milk," instead of just one tantalizing pint.

5 out of 5 stars Milk of Human Amazement.......2007-01-14

Dan Snaith is someone who is far ahead of his lo-fi/experimental/synth rock genre, and he does it so well. For someone that far into the game like Dan, his album, "The Milk of Human Kindness", triumphantly cooks; as this newly treasured genre really picks up. For those just new into the genre, I would not suggest starting here, as you may become overwhelmed, and unsure of your new found love of the genre. I suggest early Manitoba albums, or perhaps Sufjan Stevens, or Russian Futurists, or even The Decemberists.

I loved the album from start to finish, and cannot skip a track.
"Yeti" is the perfect start to the album with the yawning voice and snappy beats. While I enjoy the hip-hop flavor in the track "Lord Leopard", it's perhaps the keen piano style loop that does it for me and keeps me enthused 3 tracks in. From "Bees" to "Brahminy Kite" I am kept contented and feeling well fed of the musical smorgasbord he has delivered thus far.
Then he gives us "Drumheller"...and having lived in Edmonton for 4 years, and have been to Drumheller...ooh half a dozen times, the beats and style he gives you on the c.d. are almost that of the sound of that place, itself. Sad sounding, depressing, but alive, and self preserving, it hits home. He ends off on "Barnowl" and he keeps us full with his dessert ending, playfully reserved, closer.

In all, Dan Snaith is a musical genius and I think that music has found it's new modern day Mozart of Lo-Fi music, and I have a feeling he could go down in the books like Mr. Mozart himself.

I love this album it has two different vibes 1st is more rock driven acid jazz the second is hip hop with some orchestral classical but the whole album is steaming hot i knew to buy it because i burnt my fingers when i picked it up i have not heard any other albums by him but this was redomended by a friend now im returning the favor by this ***** ten stars *****

5 out of 5 stars A total mind blow.......2006-01-16

This music has no boundries or categories. It's almost Debussy like in it's expansiveness and seeming lack of traditional structure. You just have to check it out and get pulled in like a vortex.
I saw Caribou as an opening band recently and the live show is nothing short of jaw droppingly amazing. They totally blew the headliner off the stage and into the next state (and the headliner is one of my all time favorite bands). Don't miss Dan's Caribou when they come to your town, unreal.

5 out of 5 stars exquisite.......2006-01-14

Somehow, an album this great can be surpassed in the live show. This album illustrates a skilled use of harmony and counterpoint ... each tone carefully interweaves with another. The album also has a great texture to it ... nothing cheezy here.

4 out of 5 stars Add Red Grammer to Your Collection!.......2006-02-06

We have been listening to Red Grammer for a while in my household and have fallen for each and every one of his CDs to date. "BeBop Your Best" is similar to "Teaching Peace" in that each song speaks of some aspect of behavior and character, whereas the other CDs are filled with old time family favorites with a few original pieces thrown in. I love how the 3-5 year old crowd immediately react to Red Grammer's songs about character-- better than a lecture from Mom or Dad any day! My 4 year old happily quotes from BeBop Your Best, reminding me, her friends, her imaginary playmates and even herself about the good choices we make every day. This CD is in heavy rotation at our house, both for the music and the message. I'm not certain I would want this particular CD any longer-- we all have out limit on how many behavior songs we can listen to!-- and am pleased with what is on it.

5 out of 5 stars Red ROCKS!.......2006-01-13

My five-year-old adores Red Grammer, and she LOVES this CD. We listen to it in the car almost daily. My husband said he finds himself singing the songs to himself at work, which he usually finds annoying with kids music, but the songs are so positive and such a great message that he finds himself uplifted by it. Adults and kids alike can benefit from "Bebop Your Best". My favorite is "Gratitude". Kind of a swanky tune with some cute lyrics. One day we were listening to "Caring and Compassion", and my daughter said, "This song would make me feel better if I was sick." Too funny. Red's awesome voice never gets old. This CD's worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars 5 stars for quality, dock one for brevity..........2005-12-30

This new release by the wonderful folky tenor (a former Limelighter) is only 35 minutes long, which makes it a pricey item perhaps. However, who else could write such clever and musically varied short songs with dull one-word titles such as "Truthfulness" and "Responsibility"? Every elementary teacher in the USA who has to incorporate a "Character Counts" type agenda into their school year should purchase this disc. The shortest song is only a minute, the longest just over three minutes. The vocabulary level varies, the tempos vary, the musical style varies. Some are cute, some are serious, and all are sensible. Red is in good vocal shape here, and this is a worthy addition to his other children's CD's.

Seven years after his first album, singer and songwriter Joe Henry finally hit his stride. His second album for Mammoth, released in 1993, appeared at an auspicious time for alternative country's "no depression" resurgence. The Bottle Rockets released their debut, Uncle Tupelo offered their swan song Anodyne, Blue Mountain formed, and growing interest in the Jayhawks' masterpiece Hollywood Town Hall helped build the genre's audience. Kindness of the World clearly belongs in this class. Henry's delivery suggests Dylan's country voice of the late '60s, a nasal but supple twang, and his songwriting--never keener than on the title cut (featuring airy harmony from Victoria Williams) or on the surging, fuzz-guitar driven "Dead to the World"--also pays a debt to that artist. The Jayhawks' Gary Louris and Marc Perlman back Henry, suffusing the whole with rock & roll body and country soul. --Roy Francis Kasten

5 out of 5 stars Intelligent lyrics, great hooks.......2004-09-12

A true diamond in the rough made during a time when indy labels were on the ascent. Every song is produced with a deft touch. The musicianship is superb. This album is one of the best, if not the best, alternative country albums ever made.

Joe Henry has moved on to more adventurous terrane since this album, but this one might have been able to garner a mainstream audience had it been on a major label and promoted properly. The eerie back up vocals of Victoria Williams fit Joe like a glove. The lyrics are smart and enigmatic. The hooks linger in your head for a long, long time. Put this one on your shelf under the label, "Obscure classics."

5 out of 5 stars Great Music to Wake to.......2004-09-04

Joe Henry starts out "Kindness of the World" with the words "One day when the weather is warm I'll wake up on a hill" and sets the tone of the whole album. There are some upbeat tunes on the album, and fantastic guitarwork and backing vocals by the Jayhawk's Gary Louris, but for the most part, Joe Henry lays out some decent mellow Minnesota-style alt country with great lyrics and swell music.

If you're into the whole Uncle Tupelo, Jayhawks, Gear Daddies alt-country type sounds, this is a good album for you. It goes well with the first Wilco and Son Volt CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2003-12-23

For me, this and Short Man's Room are his best - the lyrics and musicianship on each are stunning, and each time I listen to one of the two, I decide it's his best, until I listen to the other one again. But any of his later recordings - up to and including this year's Tiny Voices - are also stunning - more challenging musically and lyrically, but with sonic landscapes that are in a class of their own. And Joe's website - now www.joehenrylovesyoumadly.com - is articulate, moving, and well worth a visit. Thanks Joe. Any chance of a tour to New Zealand one day?

5 out of 5 stars The Best of a Great Artist.......2002-02-09

Joe Henry is still an undiscovered gem. He is exceptional in that his lyrics are every bit as important as his music on all his recordings. Actually, his lyrical quality has been consistently excellent throughout his career even as he's toyed with different musical styles. This album is a great marriage of wonderful music and lyrics. I tend to think his songwriting talents have been a bit wasted in arrangements such as those on Scar and Fuse. Joe, man, you're comfortable in the alt-country scene, why insist on trying pseudo-metal and the other styles you're cycling through. Anyway, this is a solid 10 rating - a Desert Island Disc (Short Man's Room is just slightly behind this one). Enjoy. BTW, the "untitled" last song, "Ghost", is hauntingly memorable.

5 out of 5 stars Infectious Tunes.......2001-09-26

I heard a couple of tracks from this on the radio and wanted to hear more. So I bought this CD and it just grows and grows on me. This is Joe's finest effort in my opinion. So fine in fact that someone stole it from me. I hope they enjoy it as much as I have.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for people of any religious tradition.......2007-04-30

I am a meditation teacher and personal growth coach. I am educated in psychology and also world religions. As such, I think I am in a good position to judge the merits of this CD.

As a spiritual and psychologically oriented individual, I think the value of cultivating loving-kindness, compassion and forgiveness is grossly underestimated in our society. In fact, many of the health benefits of these types of practices are now coming to light. For example, the organization that puts out The HeartMath Solution: The Institute of HeartMath's Revolutionary Program for Engaging the Power of the Heart's Intelligence and Freeze-Framer ® v2.0 Interactive Learning System with Patented Heart Rhythm Monitor are getting good traction in the medical community.

Loving-Kindness meditaiton has been around long before these times, however. This practice originated with the Buddha and is expanded upon in detail in the Anapanasatti sutras dating back more than 2,000 years. This CD is westernized version of this practice that is effective and true to the spirit of the tradition that is was taken from. In other words, it has 2,000+ years of experiential validation as a method to develop loving-kindess. The forgiveness meditaiton is a bonus and the benfits of learning to forgive are well-researched, e.g. see Forgive for Good.

The timing of different segments, background information and length of these meditations is very well-suited to people without prior experience in meditation. The presentation is also detailed enough to be useful when one is accomplished at this practice as well.

In general, Carolyn McManus puts out good, high quality materials. I particularly like Relax into Restful Sleep. If you like this CD, you may want to try one of her other ones.

5 out of 5 stars Loving Kindness Helps Open Your Heart.......2006-12-04

In this 2006 CD, Carolyn McManus uses her experience and enchanting voice to create guided meditations on Loving Kindness and on Forgiveness.

These meditations have brought me heartfelt joy. When I am following Carolyn through her Loving Kindness phrases, I discover my heart creaking open to love in ways that I had not known existed. And listening to both meditations has moved me to try to bridge several long-standing estrangements.

I particularly enjoy Carolyn's version of Loving Kindness because she begins with phrases toward a loved one, moves next to the same phrases for ones own self, and then through several steps to all living beings. The beginning generates a strong feeling of loving energy which repetitive phrases carry through the following steps of the meditation. The ending connects us to everyone.

Listening to Carolyn's Mindful Body Scan on her "Mindfulness" CD has helped me to become better able to follow guided meditations such as on this "Loving Kindness" CD. I highly recommend both.

5 out of 5 stars Carolyn McManus's Loving Kindness CD.......2006-10-02

As a physical therapist who works with many pain patients, I have found that McManus's CD provides a very helpful way for my patients to continue their healing work after they have left my office. Carolyn's soothing voice, her comforting and calming words give welcome guidance to those who are dealing with emotional issues that serve as barriors to the healing process. This CD can help anyone trying to relate to and interact with others in this very stressful world. Anne Ingard PT

5 out of 5 stars Loving Kindness Meditation and Forgiveness Meditation.......2006-09-24

As a newcomer to meditation, I felt that it was somehow selfish since it seemed to be for my well being and only my well being. Carolyn McManus' Loving Kindness Meditation and Forgiveness Meditation not only offered me a way of including my loved ones in my meditation, it also guided me to find peace in forgiveness. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Genius in Simplicity.......2006-09-22

In this age of latest-greatest-trade marked branding frenzy, this CD stands out in its simplicity and poignancy. No fancy incantations, no deep intricate theories or complex formulations. McManus takes the listener straight into the practice without fluff or flourish...straight into their heart. In the cleanly recorded instruction with no heavenly/new-age chorus for accompaniment, McManus invites the listener into the only space where change can occur.

From this heart space with crisp and gentle pacing, the listener "moves" through the ancient loving kindness practice with a clear, unfettered directness. Each movement gently and mindfully invites the heart's participation, but also allows permission for what ever distance may be necessary in the moment. No pressing forward or assumed need to demand the gentle heart space move beyond its safety at the moment.

This CD makes a marvelous clinical tool for therapists of many flavors to recommend to their clients who might benefit from the healing effects of spending time in their heart spaces. Especially relevant in our harried society is the Forgiveness meditation...it brings a powerful tool in a gentle manner into the homes of patients that might benefit from the healing powers of forgiveness in their lives. Books, clinical talk and theories fail to go as deeply as this well thought out and supportive practice can over time and repetition.

McManus demonstrates an awareness of the worlds she traverses...depth of mindfulness practice, realities of clinical needs for "everyday" patients and clients, and most importantly, the gift of awareness in the sacred heart space she obviously has spent time in herself, both with herself and as an honored guest of fortunate patients.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the EP.......2005-01-20

The songs on this album do not compare well with the original 5 song Jealous Sound EP. The songs sound like some other band trying to capture the Jealous Sound and failing at it. Rough and uneven, with unusual chords and sounds that aren't heard often for good reason.

I'm only giving it 3 stars because Anxious Arms alone makes any album a 5-star, but the rest ruin it.

5 out of 5 stars Can't get enough.......2004-10-19

Probably the best album of 2003. This band's first full length album breaks through. Blair Shehan's amazing vocals leave you wanting more and more. Naive, the second track, shifts into high gear, the bassline rocks. Above the waves, the last track, is one of my all time favorite songs, it starts on such a sappy note, but then breaks into depression and questions of being. I love this album, and you will too.

5 out of 5 stars best new sound since the smashing pumpkins.......2004-09-09

this is one of the best albums ever. it recalls my first hearing "my aim is true" or "off the wall," in terms of nonstop pop power. i love how these guys pay tribute to timeless rifts and sounds (U2, Smashing Pumpkins, Plimsouls, etc). they sing about real subjects with outstanding lyrics and pure, clean music. anyone who doesn't love this album probably has a twisted soul. the last track, "above the waves," is as good as anything elvis costello or michael jackson did, frankly the highest praise i can offer.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF MY FAVORITE RECORDS!.......2004-05-28

I just can't get this CD out of my CD player. It is an awesome record & truly a master piece! The 12 songs from A to Z are extremely catchy & memorable. I love all the knapsack records, but this record shows a much more mature sound & song writing style. Blair Shehan is one of the best singers & writers around these days. His new band ROCKS! Get this record it is worth every penny!

4 out of 5 stars The Jealous Sound, Kill Them with Kindness.......2004-02-16

Los Angeles indie vets, late of Knapsack and Shudder to Think, plow through the emo encyclopedia (deception, sleepless nights, lost hope), funneling disappointments and anxieties into a 12-song program that'll beat the tears out of you like a fistful of Zoloft. Constantly churning toward what sounds like unattainable resolution, they seldom whine and never hit a soaring chorus that doesn't sound like they've paid for it in blood.spin

I've got the original music (including v2 and v3), the books (the best is Heitland's The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Book; still in print);
the 22 VHS tapes issued in the early 1990's (a haphazard collection issued in no particular order of episodes that boasted famous guest stars). Can I please get the whole series on DVD? I have not seen Mother Fear toying with Illya (The Children's Day Affair) in over 40 years.

5 out of 5 stars At LAST the complete series ORIGINAL soundtrack, the wait is over!.......2005-07-12

Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.

Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.

And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.

Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.

This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.

Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.

So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

Though much of the uptempo interplay on the latest from veteran Bobby Osborne (once half of the venerable Osborne Brothers) reinforces the impression of bluegrass as good-time music, tales of hard times dominate the material. The album-opening "The Hard Times" describes a life of never making enough or having enough, with heaven the only hope for escape. From the lovelorn "It's Gonna Be Rainin' 'Til I Die" to the wayward son's lament of "The Fields Have Turned Brown" to a bluegrass recasting of Kris Kristofferson's hangover lament, "Sunday Morning Coming Down," the lyrical mood is as downcast as the music is buoyant. Other than the comparatively bright title track (a hit for Glen Campbell), the the most chipper song here prophesizes the end of the world in "We're Living in the Last Days Now." Osborne's keening tenor, nimble mandolin playing, and ace Rocky Top X-Press band are all in fine form, and the material covered extends from Josh Turner ("Long Black Train") to Paul Simon ("Father and Daughter"), but this album is far from the sunshine special of the year. --Don McLeese

Album Description

Bluegrass owes a lot to Bobby Osborne. As one half of the legendary Osborne Brothers, he pioneered a powerfully forward-thinking, harmony-driven style that introduced bluegrass to generation after generation through its inventiveness and enduring popular appeal. Today, at an age when many performers are considering retirement, Bobby Osborne continues to refine his music and share it with the world. Longtime Osborne followers will find 'Try a Little Kindness' to contain some of Bobby Osborne's finest singing and mandolin playing of the past three decades. Newcomers will be astonished to hear just how contemporary Osborne sounds - a testament to both his immense influence on modern bluegrass and his unwavering passion and ability.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fine singing & playing continue to build the reputation and legacy of Bobby Osborne as singer, mandolinist, teacher, entertainer.......2006-03-14

Playing Time - 39:05 -- Originally from Hyden, Ky., mandolinist Bobby Osborne's musical career began over fifty years ago (in 1949) with banjo player Larry Richardson, Charlie and Ray Cline in a group called The Lonesome Pine Fiddlers. He would've been about 18 years old. By 1953, Bobby and his banjo-playing brother, Sonny, were working with Jimmy Martin. With Red Allen singing lead, the Osborne Brothers formed their own band in 1955 and joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1964. Bobby's tenor and then his high lead vocals got folks to really sit up and take notice. So did his instrumental talent on the mandolin, a personalized style based largely on single-line melodies after he had learned to play electric guitar and fiddle at an early age. Bobby doesn't like to hear guys get completely away from the melody and just play a bunch of notes. Fast forward through about forty years of hits, awards, and even some controversy about electric instruments, we are now treated to Bobby Osborne & The Rocky Top X-Press' debut release on the Rounder label. Following surgery on his shoulder, Sonny no longer plays banjo or tours extensively.

The project's diverse material is drawn from an interesting variety of sources - Jake Landers, Carter Stanley, Hazel Dickens, Bill Monroe, Bailes Brothers, as well as Kris Kristofferson, Bobby Austin, Bill Anderson, and Paul Simon. The juxtaposition of the traditional and contemporary has always been a stamp of the Osborne sound. Eddie Stubbs' 11 pages of liner notes make reference to their trademark commercial, radio-friendly, strong material. This project balances new material with songs that have been around for decades. I especially enjoyed the Bobby Osborne/Pete Goble 1971 composition (until now unreleased) called "It's Gonna Be Raining `Til I Die." Bobby's "Rocky Top X-Press" demonstrates his fluency in the string language of mandolinese, and Glen Duncan's twin fiddles and Dana Cupp's banjo really supercharge the instrumental. The Bailes Brothers' "We're Living in the Last Days Now" is a beautiful and inspirational song with a message as relevant today as it was when written decades ago. Besides Duncan and Cupp, other instrumental support is rendered by Daryl Mosley (bass), Bobby Osborne Jr. (rhythm guitar), and Tim Graves (dobro). Harmony vocals are sung by Duncan and Mosley, although Josh Turner's "Long Black Train" features five voices in the full-bodied background vocals. Over the years, the Osborne sound and arrangements were built largely around the high lead being featured in contemporary country songs. While their complex trios used ideas borrowed from pedal steel or elaborate and flashy endings, you'll find them a little more conservative on "Try A Little Kindness." The trios in the more traditional "The Fields Have Turned Brown" and "Mansions for Me" are actually among my favorites here. Bobby once admitted that it is his singing that got him to where he's at. And while folks rave about Bobby's powerful vocalizing on this album, don't overlook his solid mandolin playing.

"Try a Little Kindness" shows that 74-year-old bluegrass pioneer Bobby Osborne has no immediate plans to retire, and he continues to cultivate his polished music. Bobby feels that he's singing better now than he has in ten years. With fine singing and playing, this album continues to build the reputation and legacy of Bobby Osborne as singer, mandolinist, teacher and entertainer. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)
