Album Description

The Naxos Book of Carols is a collection of both the very old and very new. It is a selection of best-loved and newfound carols, drawing on centuries of tradition.The carols unfold in four narrative sequences each focusing on a different part of the Christmas Story - from The Hope of Advent to the announcements of The Message, the joy of the birth of The Baby and the celebration of the coming of The King of Kings. There are 24 carols, one for each day of advent.

This CD contains some wonderful variations of traditional Christmas carols. O Little Town of Bethlehem is hauntingly beautiful. The Holly and the Ivy is delightful. One of my favorite holiday songs, Personent Hodie, is particularly interesting and well done. And all of this at a true value price!

Pitts's new tune for O Little Town of Bethlehem is very appealing, and the alternate tune for The Holly and the Ivy in some verses is beautiful. The arangements for O Come and Of the Father's Love Begotten are very striking.
The singers are good, whether as soloists or in chorus and their pronunciation is very clear. However, the organ is sometimes allowed to drown them out! And, at least for my taste, the organ ornamentation is very often far too discordant. Fortunately this does not happen in every song, and when it does occur, it is usually for one verse only.
Most of these arangements and settings I would love to hear again without the organ. Then I'd give it more stars!

    Now officially in his mid-twenties, Skott Freedman has matured musically while clearly benefitting from his early start in a career of musical individualism, personal honesty and community activism. He has a very distinct style of vocal - just as he is prodigious with keyboards (both acoustic and electric).

    All of the songs selected for "Judge A Book" possess a great "hook" and Skott uses just the right bait to earn the listener's attention and praise - including impressive multi-instrumental arrangements.

    Many of these songs were previously unknown to me, but as someone who owns all of his original material, they all sounded likely to be his own compositions. More popular classics such as The Cranberries' "Zombie" and Green Day's "Basket Case" are superb, and ear-opening surprises include "Sorry For Myself" (by Jann Arden) and "Good Morning Baby" (by Bic Runga).

    Skott is a proud bisexual activist in his spare time - and in duet with gay country icon Mark Weigle he ensures an appropriate and strring rendition of "Papa Was A Rodeo" (by Magnetic Fields).

    This is a superb collection of great songs (by fine writers) which will inspire you to seek out more of the same. It's certainly a valuable addition to your Skott Freedman collection.

        Ms. Chambers is so tight.....she has that speed rapping style that sounds good over the beats that's on this album......Its a very slept on album for no good reason.....There not many Minnesota rap albums that are easy to find like this album so pick up if you want to hear some tight midwest music........Smoke UP..........
