Irish native Luka Bloom recorded his third U.S. release, Turf, in Dublin's Windmill Studio, a big, rock'n'roll room. Except for a harmony vocal on one song and an audience sing-along on another, all the sounds are created by Bloom's booming, deep tenor and driving acoustic guitar. Engineers and coproducers Paul Ashe-Browne and Brian Masterson have turned these simple ingredients into a big, lustrous sound that recalls Chris Isaak's moody, hermetic ballads. Unfortunately, the mesmerizing sound of the album is squandered on the narcissistic musings of an overly sensitive young man. Even when he sings about the plight of the Aborigines in Australia or the blacks in America, he seems to be talking to himself in a humorless, private meditation. --Geoffrey Himes

west coast vaccine indeed!.......2007-08-01
this cd is real tight. who ever don't have this one is slippin'. damn near every song on here is different and tight. he comes versitile, but street, a mixture of that old school flavor and that new school sound. to me chips ,shinnin, and x stands out as some classic songs. grab this cause the west coast vaccine is a must have.
SLUMPARIFFIC.......2007-06-06
Turf came with a slumper here. There is a good mix of old school and new school beats. It dont sound like all that other garbage out there. He is definately being slept on nationwide. To me this is a slapper that will ride all summer, his best one yet! Keep it up Turf.

Nothing but hits.......2001-01-31
As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

The third offering from Space Ghost and company, this disc closely follows the format of Cartoon Planet, the cult-favorite variety show that runs on the Cartoon Network. There are songs galore, though few of them are outright parodies; rather, most take their cues from popular styles and filter them through the goofily surreal sensibilities of Cartoon Planet. The loopy Brak sings about his Hawaiian vacation and raps about Zorak in "Fight the Power Bands" (in which Space Ghost cheerfully chimes in with "Tell it, mack daddy!"), while the lovably gruff Zorak offers a Nirvana homage on "Nasty" ("I call Space Ghost a big baboon / I oughta be spanked, and it oughta be soon"), and apes the Cops theme song on "Bad Bug" ("I'm an evil mantis who won't be kind / I'll shoot my laser at your big behind"). It's not as strong as Space Ghost's Musical Bar-B-Que--there's a little too much filler among this album's 36 tracks. --Randy Silver
Customer Reviews:
I got my copy autographed........2006-11-04
This was the second album of songs and nonsense from the Space Ghost Coast to Coast TV show. If you've ever seen the show, you'll know what to expect. Silly, short songs and skits. If you've never seen the show, you're reaction to this CD will probably be, "What the heck IS this?". But if you are a fan of the show, you'll get a big kick out of it.
Good times.......2005-10-10
Every time I listen to this I flash back to the late 90's when I first bought it and listened to it many mornings driving to my job in Petoskey Mich. It cracked me up many mornings and made the drive to my menial retail job much more bearable. I find Surf and Turf much better than the first album. I never watched Space Ghost but I sure have good memories of this tape. Good stuff. Especially "Metalhead" which is just pure genius!
Listening to this was an ordeal.......2004-09-30
I was subjected to this release on multiple occasions by a co-worker. I found it to be not amusing, clever or entertaining, I found it instead to be a painful annoyance, much like a shreiking baby, fingernails on a chalkboard or dental drills, any of which I would prefer to this.
This is the Muzak in my Hell.
Gotta Love It.......2003-08-28
If you like ridiculous songs about some of the strangest topics around then you NEED this CD. I can't get enough of the Space Ghost CDs. This CD is filled with pure nonsense and humorous ear candy.
Wish there was a DVD to match.......2003-06-25
I really enjoy Space Ghost Coast to Coast, and this CD is a bonus! My kids didn't know what to think about it at first, but now they love it as much as I do. If you are a Space Ghost fan, you MUST buy this CD. Let's just hope Space Ghost comes out officially on DVD! I'll be in line to buy one!

Customer Reviews:
"I just don't believe in this world full of sorrow....".......2003-10-10
It takes a brave soul to stand in a studio with a guitar and a microphone to record an album's worth of songs, but Luka Bloom made that bravery into magic. While listening to "Turf," it's hard to imagine that this multi-layered sound is coming from just one man and his instrument. Such is the beauty of this CD. There is the joy of discovery ("Sunny Sailor Boy") to the crush of heartbreak ("Sanctuary," written about the death of his mother). Luka has the amazing range as a singer that brings to mind the likes of Van Morrison or Richard Thompson, and his guitar skills are also reminiscent of Thompson's.
I was fortunate enough to catch him performing behind this album. He's even more powerful live, and personable from the stage. As dreamy and eloquent as "Turf" is on disc, it takes on even greater life during a concert performance. Consider this an endorsement to see him should he ever come to your part of the world.
"Turf" is also, compositionally, the best of Bloom's many albums. I would never tell anyone to just stop here, but it's a great place to start. Get "Turf" for the terrific "Right Here Right Now," the politically feisty "Background Noise" and the elegiac "Sanctuary." Then get "Riverside," "The Acoustic Motorbike," "Keeper Of The Flame" and the recently released live "Amsterdam."
Four and a half stars, and a shame he isn't better known.
emotional turf.......2003-09-27
From the claustrophobic gorgeousness of "true blue" to the choking refrain of "Sanctuary" this album is exemplary of a gifted musician's catalog.
Brilliant.......2003-02-26
I had the pleasure of being introduced to Luka Bloom's music by my Irish boyfriend about a year ago when we were in Dublin. Purchasing this CD was part of my quest to get my hands on everything he's done. I loved every note of it.
Enchanting...an album with staying power........2001-12-09
I first heard Luka Bloom's Acoustic Motorbike and happened upon this album by chance. Having liked what I had heard, I picked it up on impulse. It's turned out to be one of the best CD purchase decisions I have ever made.
The songs are all enchanting, filled not only with deep lyrics but with skilled guitar tunes that will keep you hooked. Even the most uptempo tunes on the album seem to put me in a very serene mood. I found myself moved by more than a few of the tunes. Diamond Mountain and Black is the Colour are two of the best written songs, sung soulfully, that I have ever heard.
If you are a fan of acoustic guitar, pure music, lyrical mastery, I can't recommend this album enough. You may also find yourself digging through the store for every shred of Luka Bloom you can buy -- but you'll always return to this incredible collection.
A must have for your cd collection.......2001-09-26
I first heard this in Canada about 5 years ago. It immediately captured me and drew me in. On our drive home from Alberta to Utah, we listened to it probably 5 or 6 times and each time I heard something new. Over the years, I've listened to it probably 50 or 60 times. I started singing the songs and learning them, even on my guitar although not even close to what LB does. Obsessed? No. But this is one of those cd's that only comes along every year or so for me that really moves me. Seals 2nd cd was another one for example. I highly recommend it. You just may be one of those who views this as a found treasure too.

Nice effort by the Sugaworf Pimp.......2005-07-07
"Turf Matics" is Dubee's 4th album. It was released on Mac Dre's label Thizz Records. The album is different than the first 2 (that were both on Black Brotha Records, and produced by the one and only Khayree) and the 3rd one as well (which was released on Coolio Da Undadog's label, and featured a lot of his artists and tight beats). Dubee works with a whole new group of producers, most of them unknown. However, you get one beat by Khayree and it's a good one, and a few by Sean T (and he doesn't dissapoint on that one at all). The other producers come out with tight beats at times, and weaker ones at others... And that's the biggest problem on this album - the beats. Some of them aren't good enough or just don't fit Dubee's unique style. Maybe the album was too long, it could've been much better with some of the songs off... Dubee's flow is one of the best in the industry, no doubt about that. He usually flows real fast, and without really slowing down throughout his verses, the boy's got suprior breath control. Lyrically Dubee's imroved quite a bit from his previous albums, although the topics never really change. But it's all good - Dubee is all about game, pimpin', and representing the Crestside. He rarely touches the Gangsta topics. You also get some great appearences by The Cutthroat Commettee (Mac Dre and PSD), Reek Daddy (featured on the best song on the album and one of Dubee's greatest ever!), J Diggs, Richie Rich (however the song with him is one of the worst...) and a few other. Overall, I would recommend it to Dubee fans, people familiar with his previous work. I see Dubee as one of the Vallejo's most talented rappers, and altough the album has it's weak spots (a few wack songs and totally useless skits) it's still a good effort, and Dubee's talent is obvious.
i need my E jus to fu#$.......2005-06-02
this is the latest album from dubee and its off the hook. The beats seem a little different from his older work but they are tight. sean t on the tracks came out tight. i saw dubee at the arden mall in macramento. wish i had one of his cds on me so he could have signed. its all good cuz i got to meet him out of the cuts at champs.

U Ain't Made U Just Afraid!!!!.......2006-11-07
Str8 up this is a three and a half. T Kash does not sound like no one else and his rhyme style switches up. He's from the Bay area and down with Paris and Guerrilla Funk records. He's not preachy instead he talks raw real street knowledge. Similar to the way Cube did it back in the day.
The production is simple but effective and he rides the tracks with ease. They did a good job selecting beats that fit him in my opinion. I wish the media would pay as much attention to this as they do some of the other types of Hip-Hop that we hear 24-7. This brother deserves a applaud for coming out with a good record like this that many people will not here. He has all type of subject matter discussed throughout the album, but only one subject sum's them all up "AFRICAN PEOPLE WAKE UP"!!! Hotep!!!
T-KASH is Fierce!.......2006-04-01
Where do I begin? WOW! Yet again, Paris put it down on the Production tip. T-KASH's CD is off the chain! He has a fierce flow. His messages are so evenly balanced on this CD. He is the spokesperson of the forgotten cat on the streets. Yet, by bringing his brilliance to music, he is able to talk to the bourgeois intellectuals who feel that cats on the street don't matter. He says they DO matter and you better pay attention. He tells their stories brilliantly.
T-KASH is indeed a force to be reckoned with in the game. His weaponry through the mic is a message of hope, get-it-togetherness, and staying informed and prepared for the battle that we as a people endure everyday. He is a perfect fit for the Guerrilla Funk family and this CD will stand the test of time.
Well done to T-KASH and continue to do what you do. You not only talk about the streets, you live it everyday and thank you for the stories we don't hear.

Customer Reviews:
Encourage your brooders to set.......2003-03-08
This album falls gracelessly between two stools: art song and folk song. Listening to it was like being stuck in an endless after-dinner recital when all I really wanted to do was drape the concert notes over my eyes and snooze.
I wanted to be polite. After all, I really loved the albums Benjamin Luxon cut with Bill Crofut, where many of this album's songs also appear, only sung in a very tuneful and endearing manner. I highly recommend their "Dance to Your Daddy," "Two Gentlemen Folk," and "Simple Gifts."
For that matter, I'd recommend this baritone's classical CDs to anyone. He sings a mean Bach.
This album? Well, I'm glad Amazon's two-star rating means 'not for me' instead of 'this recording is so incredibly one-dimensional and boring that I'm going to pipe it into my hen house to encourage the brooders to set.'
I know some people will love listening to Benjamin Luxon sing twenty-six English folk songs in what my untrained ear seemed to think was exactly the same manner, tempo, and volume, accompanied by what sounded like the same tune on the piano for all twenty-six tracks (maybe the pianist got sick after the first track and the album's producers thought no one would notice if they recycled his accompaniment twenty-five times). After all, the previous reviewer gave this album five stars and a very respectful evaluation.
I'm saying if you want to hear Benjamin Luxon sing 'Down by the Salley Gardens,' you will be better off with "Dance to Your Daddy" rather than this CD.
Consummate Artistry!.......2002-02-22
In the mid 1990's, Benjamin Luxon was forced to give up
a major international presence singing opera/oratorio/songs because
of his growing deafness. This wonderful reissue gives us a taste
of what we lost yet is a reminder of his consummate artistry.
Luxon and his accompanist, David Willison, give loving
and sometimes spirited interpretations of a wide crossection
of British Isle traditional and folk songs. Thank you, Chandos,
for this reminder of the excellent gifts that Benjamin Luxon shared with us.
