On The Blue Idol, Irish music superstars Altan have come up with an elegant solution to the problem of how to play music that satisfies both the traditional purist and the fan who wants a contemporary edge in his or her music. When the band members play instrumental sets of dance tunes, they never stray far from their Donegal roots, and when they sing songs they stretch the boundaries by performing with guest artists like Paul Brady and Dolly Parton while adding unexpected instruments like didgeridoo and saxophone. On songs such as "Daily Growing" and "Uncle Rat"--which feature the exquisite voice of Mairéd Ní Mhaonaigh--the band creates a mood of jazzy medievalism that reveals hints of Pentangle's early recordings. And when they hunker down for a set of jigs or reels, they play with the sort of passionate abandon you only hear at the finest sessions. The contemporary and traditional strains of music on The Blue Idol are like two streams that join together to form a river that flows further and with more power than either could alone. --Michael Simmons

The least you can say about Taylor Hicks is that he's not like prior American Idol champs: he already had almost a decade of gigging in bars when he won the fifth season in 2006, complete with songwriting experience, an ability to play harmonica and guitar, and a pair of self-released albums. On his major-label debut, the Silver Fox settles in a plush, comfortable sound framed by vintage-sounding soul and R&B, as well as classic rock--it's comfort food for the ears. The one thing that's not here is Hicks's first single, "Do I Make You Proud." Other than that, the songs are a well-balanced mix of oldies (Marvin Gaye's "Wherever I Lay My Hat"), newbies that sound like oldies (Rob Thomas's "Dream Myself Awake," Bryan Adams's "The Right Place"), the obligatory Diane Warren ballad ("Places I've Been"), and some party-fun anthems ("The Runaround," "Heaven Knows"). This last track actually is one of two paying tribute to Hicks's patron saint, Ray Charles--it references the piano riff from "What'd I Say," while "The Right Place" was originally written for Charles. Clearly, there are worse people to look up to. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars Taylor Hicks is the REAL deal!.......2007-07-30

Taylor Hicks is the real deal. There are no compromises on this CD. Every track is straight-forward. "Wherever I Lay My Hat", "Places I've Been", "The Right Place" and "Soul Thing" are my favorites. I find myself humming Taylor's tunes throughout the day. This CD not only has soul it rolls!

1 out of 5 stars This Is Not Soul Music.......2007-07-16

After listening to every song on this CD, I can understand why Taylor Hicks has not found success in the music industry. The songs all sound very outdated, and should be labeled as 70's pop, not soul, as others are claiming in their reviews. If you thought this CD would have the type of music that Taylor performed on AI or on his previous two CD's, then expect to be disapointed. If you didn't think that, then still expect to be disapointed because this CD just isn't good at all.

5 out of 5 stars IT'S A SOUL THING.......2007-07-16

I love this albums different dementions but all have that Soul Thing running thru them. His original song "Soul Thing" should have been the title to this CD. Love the man and his music.

5 out of 5 stars Channeling Van the Man.......2007-07-12

Taylor has his own style and originality. I was intrigued by him the minute I saw his first audition on AI. He's a star! I hope his career endures as I feel he has true passion and soul for his music. This album does NOT disappoint. I know I am drawn to him because I have become such a big Van Morrison fan and his music reminds me of Van's and I love the harmonica...go figure!

4 out of 5 stars Taylor Hicks CD.......2007-07-11

Pretty Good CD. Taylor Hicks is a good singer -- definitely a different style, but I still like his music and his personality.

Among producers, his name remains the simile of choice. If some hotshot studio whiz emerges in, say, hip-hop, he's inevitably labeled "the Phil Spector of rap." That's quite a statement given that decades have passed since this boy from the Bronx remodeled rock & roll to suit his own visions of grandeur. The story of the girl-group auteur is a fascinating one. Spector composed a No. 1 hit at 17 (the Teddy Bears' "To Know Him Is to Love Him," its title inspired by the inscription on his father's tombstone). By 19 he was head of A&R for Atlantic Records. By the time he was 22, he'd founded his own label (Philles) and was churning out Wall of Sound hits at an unprecedented clip, beginning with the Crystals' "He's a Rebel." The four-disc Back to Mono befits its singular subject in both presentation (the richly annotated booklet includes a piece by Tom Wolfe) and content (60 songs cut between 1958 and 1969, plus the entire classic Yuletide LP A Christmas Gift for You). --Steven Stolder

4 out of 5 stars good box set, great bargain........2007-08-03

This box set has been around for while and is a great bargain at $18.98, marked down from $75. Four discs of Spector-produced tracks, when he was at his peak, including the famous Christmas album. The Ronettes, The Crystals, Righteous Bros.and others in the Wall Of Sound which changed pop music forever. It comes in an LP-sized box with a large, nicely-done book of the lyrics. A must-have for any student of rock history or the nostalgia-seeker. The Christmas album alone is worth the price. This box set takes us back to a more innocent time when he was a teen millionaire and many would say, a musical genius.

4 out of 5 stars A great collection missing many cuts that Rhino should have put out. .......2007-07-21

All the hits are here played back on a vintage Ampex 351 tube tape recorder by Larry Levine and Phil himself in NYC.
If you put the treble all the way up on your set, this set can sound OK.
Why the Christmas Album was put in here I'll never know.
I wish Rhino would have put this box together instead of ABKCO.
Mine cost 69.00 US
Some things go up.
Remember Lana Clarkson. She cant defend herself.

4 out of 5 stars Greatest bargain.......2007-05-16

A few months ago I ordered this set for only about $20 & it is the best CD bargain I've ever had. This set originally sold for about $75 back in the 90's (glad I waited to buy it!)& I keep wondering why it's so cheap now. (Is Spector not allowed to make money on his music anymore?) It is a BIG set in an LP size box (I store it with my old LPs on my shelf),comes with a great big book printed on high quality paper, comes with the Christmas album & even a button. Only thing not big about this set is the sound quality, it's typical 80s & early 90s thin-sounding CD quality, not exactly what I'd call a wall of sound. Also the book has the lyrics to all the songs except the ones on the Christmas album. So if you can get past the fact that Spector may have killed someone 40 years after these recordings (if he did,how could he? He produced John Lennon's "Imagine" for goodness sake!)this is still some of the 60s greatest music.

5 out of 5 stars Cruisin' Music Extraordinaire.......2007-05-15

When I saw the "Back to Mono" box for 20 bucks, I first thought of the barrage of criticism that greeted this set when first released more than 15 years ago and, in particular, the near universal condemnation of the absolutely horrendous digital remastering that marred what should have been an unbeatable compilation. Then I thought, "So what? I LOVED this music 45 years - AUGH! - ago! This is the background music of my life! And a great collection! And I don't have much of it, vinyl or otherwise." So I bought it.

And yes, the remastering is indeed horrible, particularly when listened to through earphones. But if you can pump this music through a tinny 5-inch speaker, perhaps boosted from a '57 Chevy, it all sounds pretty damn fine. So: don't play it on your audiophile equipment: my vintage boom box does the music all the honor it requires.

And what music. A lot of this stuff didn't chart in the New York metropolitan area, so I'd never heard several tracks, but it's all vintage, no filler, hits and non-hits, lots of Ronnie Spector and the Ronnettes, the Crystals, and fewer, but important, sides from Curtis Lee), Ben E. King, Bob B. Soxx, the Righteous Brothers, the majestic Tina Turner and that sidekick of hers, and, of course, the patented Spector Wall of Sound, complete with timpani, maracas, glockenspiels, strings, horns, full brass section, yackety sax, everything INCLUDING the kitchen sink. On the tree of rock, Phil Spector is a taproot (and Bruce Springsteen the most celebrated emulator/branch).

But let's be serious: these are very basic sentiments, harking back to a very different, much simpler time, before Vietnam, Watergate, and universal irony really invaded our consciousness (the first 29 tracks before the Kennedy assassination). The Spector chronology tracks along through LBJ's "Great Society" and civil rights legislation, Nixon, and the onset of cynicism, skepticism, and the beginning of a much more complicated social and political fabric. Through all this, we underestimate the role this and other top-forty music played in shaping our imaginations: it played, constantly, to GROUPS of people in packed cars, at parties and dances, not to one solitary listener through iPod earphones, shaped romantic vocabularies, taught kids how to say "I love you" and how to rebel against parents who screamed "that guy's no good!" My wife's parents.

In short, this music and its peer recordings helped fill in pieces of our emotional identities. In this set we hear lots of 16 year olds pouring out their hearts into diaries via girl-group doo-wop. From the Righteous Brothers, a more mature, wistful kind of heartbreak with full choirs of strings. And from Ike and Tina, my god - River Deep, Mountain High has enough emotional energy to blow a bank of Marshalls, a clear high-point on a collection of high points.

The 96-page booklet is almost worth the price of the box. I didn't need the lyrics - many of them, goofy, saccharine, maudlin, trite as can be, are grafted into my brain, courtesy of that Chevy speaker - but the photos of those wonderful, innocent, vibrant faces, the essays (one by Tom Wolfe), and the discography are all splendid.

So: if you've ever loved this music - that's a significant qualifier: my kids (all in 20s and 30s) think it's virtually unadulterated corn (with the exception of River Deep, Loving Feeling, and a few other tracks) - forget about the atrocious remastering. (I'll bet Rhino will take care of that, sooner or later, and we'll hear these in gorgeous, layered monaural.) Just buy this now while you can get all four discs, the big booklet, and the huge box for 20 dollars or less. Then boogaloo or slow-dance your baby to these legendary tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Musical History.......2007-05-13

With his name in the news, it is easy to dismiss Phil Spector for current accusations, but you can never deny his place is Rock'N'Roll pantheon of musical touchstones.

This collection is an absolute must have for all those who love great rock and roll and the extras in this box are phenomenal. The booklet documenting these historic recordings is amazing, as are the collection musicians that sat in on these sessions (Sonny Bono, Brian Wilson, Leon Russell, etc.).

Just having the classic recordings of The Ronettes (Be My Baby, Walkin' In The Rain, Baby I Love You), The Crystals, Darlene Love -- along with Ike and Tina Turner's "River Deep, Mountain High" (referred to by George Harrison as the greatest single ever made) and the complete "Phil Spector's Christmas Album" -- makes this collection indispensable!!!

When this material originally resurfaced in an earlier Rhino-celebrates-the-'70s program, many rock scribes contorted themselves into revisionist pretzels: this isn't so bad, they argued--none too convincingly. There'll be none of that here: much of the music on this colossal box set is godawful. The world doesn't miss the likes of Sammy ("Chevy Van") Johns and Sammy ("Candy Man") Davis. Or at least it doesn't miss the records they cut during the decade of disaster flicks and Jonathan Livingston Seagull. That said, this elaborate box is something to behold. The lovingly compiled 92-page booklet provides background on the ridiculous (David Soul, C.W. McCall, Carl Douglas) and the sublime (Parliament, James Brown, the Staple Singers), and the music swings on the same pendulum, with Harry Chapin, Bill Withers, and Cat Stevens sitting amid Wayne Newton, The Captain & Tennille, and Meco's jittery electro-take on the Star Wars theme. Seven discs, 160 selections! To paraphrase a popular ad slogan of the era, you won't believe you listened to the whole thing. --Steven Stolder

2 out of 5 stars yuck.......2007-07-13

I should have read the description better regarding the sound bites between some songs. I found them to be annoying. The Time Life collection is so much better and it doesn't cost much more.

5 out of 5 stars Peace, man............2007-05-31

O.K. I'm 38. I was born in 1968 and I wasn't into a lot of the 70's music until the decade was on its way out. But my parents had so many great vinyl compilations by that time and I had my cool new little record player that I HAD to listen to all the songs.
And now, I find that I'm doing the same thing with this set of CD's! It's freakin' 1979 all over again!
How can you cram so much 70's goodness into this box set? And to get the ORIGINAL songs from the ORIGINAL stars is just groovy. Too many compilations now have the original stars doing remakes of their songs and it just seems pointless to me.
Brandy (You're A Fine Girl), unabashedly my favourite song of ALL TIME, (just ask those that have to endure it EVERY time I karaoke) finds a great spot here in its ORIGINAL glory.
If you're thinking of getting a 70's compilation, STOP THINKING!! BUY THIS ON IMPULSE AND ENJOY A HASTY DECISION FOR ONCE!!
There'll be no time to feel any guilt when you're singing along to all the classics you grew up with.
"Billy, Don't Be A Hero!" "You're No Good" if you don't "Rock The Boat" and "Let Your Love Flow"! "Me and Mrs. Jones" will be "Stuck In The Middle With You" just "Smokin' In The Boys Room" if you don't "Get Down Tonight"!!
But hey, if you think "I'm Not In Love" with this set and you don't buy it?
Well....."Everybody Plays The Fool" "You Sexy Thing"!!

5 out of 5 stars The great, the good, the bad and the plain awful, in one delightful package.......2007-04-15

So the decade of the '70's corresponds to my junior high, high school and college years. During that time AM and later FM radio supplied the leitmotifs for that era of my life. This CD collection captures completely what we listened to as fed by the top 40 charts of the time. Much of this material is outstanding, some of it was silly and some of it was awful (Morris Albert's Feelings, Terry Jacks Seasons in the Sun! So bad it is fun to listen to). This magnificent compilation captures it completely in all its '70's era glory. And in typical Rhino fashion, it is elegantly packaged with an outstanding booklet and boxed set. True I'm biased in that I even liked the sound bites.

It is a bit expensive, and some have criticized the inclusion of the Top 40 single versions over the definitive album versions, but hey guys/gals, this is what they played on the radio at the time. Also missing are some of the superstars, but as the booklet says, you probably have lots of those already (e.g., Paul McCartney, Elton John, mid-period Stones, Billy Joel, etc.)

I was hesitant about the cost, but after one full listen through, I'm extremely pleased. Thank you Rhino (and thanks to Amazon, too who listed the delivery time as several weeks but it came within one week).

4 out of 5 stars GREAT MUSIC, DODGY PACKAGE.......2007-03-12

This is as comprehensive as a Seventies collection can get. The MIAs are obvious (no Eagles, Neil Diamond, Fleetwood Mac, Carpenters, Pink Floyd) but what's surprising is the number of major artists that DID get on here. The sound quality of 'Superstar' isn't great, the soundbites ARE fabulous, but the packaging is hopeless. While the write-ups are excellent, and the content generally flawless, the booklet itself fell apart after I read through it three times. I know for a fact mine isn't the only one this happened to. Is this a ruse to pretend it's more than 25 years old?

5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2007-01-13

If you like all the old 70's songs then you have to get this nice box set, well worth every single penny.

5 out of 5 stars Still hooked on the Deb-ster.......2007-01-03

I have been "shaking my love" to Debbie Gibson since the 80s. This album is solid - it is the pop standard.

Debbie writes great sing-along hits that don't involve sexual (or criminal) lyrics. This album proves that you don't need sex to write/promote a solid pop album.

This is a CD the whole family can enjoy. A+++

5 out of 5 stars The teen queen of 80s pop (sorry, Tiffany).......2006-10-23

Four huge hits (Shake Your Love, Foolish Beat, Out Of The Blue, and Only In My Dreams) and the inclusion of one of the other songs (Red Hot) on a movie soundtrack from the same year cement this as one of the great 80s pop classics. A talented and precocious musician who wrote all of her own material and sang it with energy and passion.

5 out of 5 stars A good debut from one of a trio of 1987 female singers.......2006-01-14

There is one thing that the cable channel VH1 does very effectively. It allows one to relive moments from your childhood through its "I Love the [insert decade here]" series of shows. Born in the early 1970s, but with music tastes more in tune with the 1980s (when I really started to notice girls) I was sitting down to watch the episode covering 1987 when a familiar music video played across my television screen.
Rewind almost 20 years and I was a 15-year old high school student in the United Kingdom. While all my friends were into heavy metal and speed metal bands I had a secret - I enjoyed and listened to pop songs and released that year were a trio of female singers, two of which would have a major impact on my life. First, was the incredibly beautiful French singer and actress Vanessa Paradis whose debut single "Joe Le Taxi" rocketed up the charts and to this day I collect any DVD or music that is released by her (which isn't much since she became the life partner to Johnny Depp). Second came Debbie Gibson (who now prefers to be known as Deborah). I immediately developed a teenage crush on the blonde singer/songwriter and joined DGIF (Debbie Gibson International Fanclub) before they had even settled on a name. To this day the only fan clubs I have ever joined was DGIF and Vanessa Paradis'.
Debbie's first CD single "Only In My Dreams" was actually released in December 1986. But she did not appear on the British music scene until mid-1987 with the song "Shake Your Love," and it was this song that introduced me to the talented young performer (and the video of which made me sit up and take notice on VH1 recently). The songs on her debut album were all light hearted and good-natured (including my favorite "Red Hot") with a heavy reliance on rhythm and drum programming (this was after all the decade that saw a heavy use of synthesized tracks).
Debbie's main competitor stateside was Tiffany who had risen up through performances at U.S. shopping malls. But whereas Tiffany was a product of cookie-cutter marketing and was fond of doing covers of others songs, Debbie wrote all her own material and represented a warm personality and a wholesome image that I appreciated.
Debbie wholesome image took a hit in 2005 when, after almost two decades of refusing requests from Hugh Hefner, she agreed to pose topless for the men's magazine `Playboy.' But a quick google of her name and one comes to realize that Debbie may have vanished from the mainstream music scene but she still has legions of loyal fans and DGIF is still going strong.
And it all started with this great selection of pop music.

5 out of 5 stars The best vocal performance ever?.......2007-06-20

I have listened to over 10,000 songs in my lifetime and I will go ahead and say it. This is the best vocal performance in the history of recorded sound. I'm a little creeped out by the look he's giving me on the cover, but when I hear these songs, I climb to the tallest hill in Nebraska and sing songs from my favorite musicals like Chippy. I am numbed by the sheer perfection of this. Go Taylor, woo hoo!!

5 out of 5 stars Big Billboard Collection!!!.......2006-03-05

I Have this box set of the Billboard Top Rock'n'Roll Hits 1962-1966. I'm doing a Billboard Top Rock'n' Roll Hits collection from 1957-1972. Good for a little shortcut of your Billboard collection. So many good songs that I've never had before.

3 out of 5 stars It's okay .......2005-07-08

I'm really disappointed with Billboard's music collections. You'd think that one of the most respected music publications out there would put together compilations better than the ones they're offering.

I wasn't born until the mid-70's but I deeply appreciate the music of the 60's, which defined culture then and still does to this day. I recognize the vast majority of the hits in their collections but some selections just scream, "Filler!"

If you want good compliations, Entertainment Weekly offers excellent ones. There are more songs and they include hits that were lower on the charts but that people, nonetheless, still love.

BTW: On the back of the disc to the 1964 collection there is a note saying that because of licensing restrictions, The Beatles songs were not included. Otherwise, that year would have been entirely them (or at least a good 7 of the 10 songs).

2 out of 5 stars Overpriced and incomplete.......2004-05-04

Overall a good collection, but like the other reviewer said, 2 hours of music for a whopping $50?!?

And what happened to the Beatles' "I Want to Hold your Hand?" How could that *not* be a Top-10 hit?

2 out of 5 stars Not enough time.......2003-12-22

I would guess that you get about 2hrs of music for fifty bucks.
Nice box set for thirty, not fifty.

3 out of 5 stars OMIT THE "NAME GAME" AND THIS WOULD BE A GOOD COLLECTION.......2000-09-18

"The Name Game" is the most idiotic, annoying and atrocious hunk of junk in creation. It has nothing to recommend it and is pure madness. I wouldn't wish "The Name Game" on anyone and have detested it since I was a very little child.

"Bread and Butter" would be ok, except the words are pretty stupid.

This collection has some good songs, like "Sugar Shack," "Louie, Louie" and the Neil Diamond penned hit for the Monkees, "I'm a Believer." The 60s was the best musical decade. As I said, omit "The Name Game" and you have a good collection. It is like the frog in the punch bowl. The table looks nice, the punch is good, but the frog makes the punch not drinkable. "The Name Game" is not hearing friendly and has cost this collection one star.

Interested in visiting your favorite contestants from the second season of American Idol? Then this is the album for you, but be forewarned that something is lost in the translation from the small screen to the compact disc. Simon Cowell's scathing comments and Paula Abdul's head tossing add to the human drama; without those visual embellishments, the recorded version falls flat. Sure this is a talented bunch, but the material is mundane, with few of the finalists straying from the traditional arrangements. But when they do, it's sometimes worse. Ruben Stoddard's rendition of the Carpenters hit "Superstar" reeks of misplaced sincerity. The best cut on the disc is Kimberly Caldwell's throaty cover of Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly With His Song," which gives the song some well-needed grit. And while Julia Demato's voice is no match for Etta James's full-bodied version of "At Last," Demato gives the classic a fetching kittenish spin. --Jaan Uhelszki

3 out of 5 stars THE BEST TALENT!!! some bad song selects............2007-06-29

Season 2 of american idol (in my opinion) had the best talent. the biggest voices and broke all stereotypes. although some people had there choice to win the finale (i really wanted kimberley locke to win), i thought they ended by pickin the right person. the previous season had there 'best' performances but this season did the opposite and decided to do love songs... honestly they should have did a greatest hits LP because i could name quite a few BRILLIANT performances by at least 5 of the contestants.

hands down the best track on the album is 'superstar' by ruben studdard. he channeled luther vandross sooooo amazingly that luther would be proud. 'killing me softley' my kim caldwell was awesome as well. she defiinatly brought the blue eyed soul on this track.

clay aiken, trenyce, charles grigsby, and carmen did great jobs on there songs as well....

now the bad.... i love kimberley locke and she did an brilliant job on 'somewhere over the rainbow', BUT the cd is called LOVE SONGS and that is not a love song at all. rickey is a great voice but his version of 'back to one' sounded EXACTLY like brian mcknight. josh gracin (was not my favourite) did a HORRIBLE job on this song... they should have gave him a country song to sing.

the class of season 2 will still be my favourite voices but i just wish they picked better songs for this cd.

1 out of 5 stars All Time Classic Love Songs...Ruined.......2006-07-18

Seriously, this CD is BAD. The only song that I can say is any good is Ruben Studdard's rendition of Superstar. And if you like that song, go buy Ruben's album, because this is not worth your money. The only reason I can see anyone buying this album, is if you are just into collecting AI merch. Other than than, SKIP THIS ONE.

1 out of 5 stars this cd stinks!.......2005-09-25

This cd is obnoxious. The artists all seem to compete by seeing how many notes they can add into one syllable. I have never heard so many slides on the notes.

4 out of 5 stars Sounds good.......2005-09-09

I really enjoyed this CD.
They picked good songs to sing and the vocals were good.

God Bless The USA was really good at the end!

5 out of 5 stars I love what American Idol has done for singing!.......2005-08-10

As a professional singer and Voice Teacher, I am so thrilled to see how American Idol has given the art of singing such a jump start in these last few years.

These American Idol CDs and programs are filled with so much varying talents. From Hard rock to Country, America is becoming interested in identifying true talent. As an Opera Singer myself I can still enjoy the gifts of other genres and am sad to hear when others look down upon the show. Also, as a voice teacher of many styles I can't stress enough the need to my own students for them to develop themselves as a "Complete Unique Package". Finding their own true niche and style including: voice type, genre, best repertoire, to the the right audition outfit. American Idol teaches the same theories. Be true to yourself and your voice to get your best shot at this business of singing. I am an advocat for AI and all shows that encourage the high developement of arts in America. We come from a society that watched sports religiously on telievision (which is great) but there are so many talents to support including singing out there amongst us. American Idol gives artists and viewers a fantastic opportunity.

5 out of 5 stars David Cassidy's voice is better than ever!.......2007-02-04

This is one of my favorite CDs! David Cassidy's voice is better than ever. The song selections on this CD are relaxing and very bluesy! I listen to this CD after a hard day or whenever I need to unwind. Can't go wrong with this one!

5 out of 5 stars David's voice is amazing.......2007-01-10

The Touch of Blue CD is wonderful. David has such an amazing voice and this CD has a wide range of different songs that David normally doesn't sing or perform at his shows. My mother even enjoyed listening to it and was singing to some of the older songs she reconginezed. I was not at all disappointed that it had a jazzy beat to it.

5 out of 5 stars David Cassidy's Vocals are Like A Fine Wine.......2005-03-16

This tasty import is just a repackaging of the Universal U.S. version with a bonus disk of songs taken from David's "Then & Now" pevious release. The bonus disks contain the remakes of "Could It Be Forever", "Cherish","How Can I Be Sure", Daydreamer", "Some Kind Of Summer","I Write The Songs","If I Didn't Care","Looking Throuh The Eyes Of Love", "It's One Of Those Nights (Yes Love)", and "I Think I Love You". If you have "Then And Now" just buy the US version. Now, having said that, this is another great David Cassidy CD inspired one would think by his stage performances in "EFX" and "At The Copa". It has a very mature, bluesy aspect to it that is like a fine, mellow wine. David's vocals are still beautiful after all these years and he still sounds good in his mid-fifties as he did in the late seventies! Awesome remakes abound here and David embraces them and makes them his own. A smokey vocal version of the popular 60s song "Spooky" starts the disk off then segues into a bluesy "New York City Life". Silky smooth vocals follow on Paul McCartney's "Blackbird" and the beautiful "Since I Fell For You" The fifth cut is the wildly popular 60s remake of "Walk Away Renee" smoothly executed and brings the tempo up a beat. Next is the slower version of his Partridge hit "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" which he has done often in concert as well as the following "Hollywood Nights" yes, the Bob Seger song which takes the pace up even more. I love the way he does this here as much as he does it in concert. He sings the song with soul and a breathy sexuality. A wonderful rendition. "A Song For you" brings him back into the dark stage witha single spotlight. These are the ballad tunes David does so well. He still has it. The mood quickly changes to a mellower slower version of "Mother and Child Reunion". Great version. The background vocalists are clear and the ooh-oohs are reminiscent of the Partridge years. Rounding out the set is a mellow version of Extremes megahit love song "Mor Than Words". Nice harmonies that are reminiscent of his later RCA years. A great blues CD that proves that David just keeps maturing and getting better! Worth a spin!! But get the US version and save the high import costs if you already have "Then & Now" and forego the wasted extra disk of repeated material.

this is a great album done by Mr. Cassidy . there are songs on this one that make me want to close my eyes to imagine him singing these songs. Cherish is so good it makes me want to cry.... Mr. Cassidy definitely took his time with this one. which is a great thing for his fans like me.

This is definitly a good album i love the first disc with all the new tracks. like that person said it would be nice if david would not keep re realesing partridge family tunes. they are ok but his solo stuff is way better. Very good cover tunes on this one plus new york city life is great. thanks

5 out of 5 stars Great Example of High-Spirited Celtic Tradional Music.......2003-08-12

I love this CD because of it's range of sounds and tracks - it goes from reels to jigs and to songs sung in Gaelic. Overall the band is very tight - Altan's best CD yet!

3 out of 5 stars Could have been so much better........2003-01-06

I'm really torn on this CD... it starts off with three of the most beautiful peices of music I've ever heard. And then what? Nothing... this CD is a perfect mix of the best and the most cliche and boring. Tracks 1,2,3, and 7 are beautiful and unique, while tracks 5,6,8 and 9 are makes of tunes that have been played by practically every Celtic band, whether Irish or Scottish, thats out there. And there is nothing about these later mentioned tracks that distinguishes them from the ordinary. So what this CD does is leave me skipping tracks. I do think though, that the good tracks alone are worth buying the whole CD, however boring the other tracks are. Altan is a respectable artist, but I can think of many other artists, better, and more complete in their goodness. If you don't mind the lack of vocals, Lunasa is one of the best Irish bands you can hear. Your money would be better spent on "Otherworld" by the aforementioned band.

5 out of 5 stars Another Stong Outing.......2002-11-17

A longtime fan of Altan, I am very pleased with new CD. The band seems only to grow stonger and more confident with each new outing. Their live shows become more intimate and spontaneous. I especially enjoyed "Daily Growing", "Pretty Young Girl" and all the reel and jig sets. This is an excellent CD for fans of Irish or Celtic music.

5 out of 5 stars This Album makes us feel at home.......2002-10-12

Thanks to all participating musicians for this superb album.
Listening to these tunes with closed eyes gives us the feeling as if we are sitting inside "Cul A Dun" in Teelin, Co.Donegal !
Especially Mairead's voice and her fiddleplay and Dermot's relaxed boxplaying is full of harmony. Nothing could be better!
    ( Except the next album...maybe ).

5 out of 5 stars celtic new age.......2002-04-15

a perfect cross-breed between melody-celtic-and-new age. Their best yet!
