If Jim Carroll, Barry Gifford, and David Lynch all decided to put on a show called Lost Highway: The Musical, or if Lou Reed and Neil Young were to score Sling Blade II, they might come up with something that sounds like No Such Place. The sophomore album from twisted Florida crooner Jim White stylishly evokes the dark delights of both alt-country and good old junkie rock. "I'm handcuffed to a fence in Mississippi / Where things is always better than they seem," sings White on the album opener, serving notice that his gallows humor is as arch as ever. But there's also a poignancy in songs such as "Corvair" (with it's rusted-out car metaphor and aching Harvest-era vocal) that demonstrates White's continuing growth as an artist. With trip-hop producers Morcheeba and Q-Burns Abstract Message giving the proceedings a modern gloss (along with assists from Sade keyboardist Andrew Hale and Yellow Magic Orchestra's Sohichiro Suzuki), these tales of gas station attendants, serial killers, and other troubled souls should help keep the Southern gothic tradition alive until White's next album. --Bill Forman

5 out of 5 stars best cd of 06 that came out in 01.......2007-01-11

where o where has jim white been or where o where have i been that it took me five years to find this masterpiece....must be all the great radio stations we have in this country...i'll admit that this isn't music for everyone but if you have open ears and are looking for great eclectic music this is your cup of tea...how could you not love a song that starts off a cd with the title handcuffed to a fence in mississippi..songs that will have you saying to yourself what he say........... songs of running into old lovers in bus terminals on christmas day and forgiving god because he was drunk ....a great remake of king of the road...this cd should be a underground legendary classic..buy it and then see how long it takes to get it out the player

5 out of 5 stars one of the more interesting country mixes.......2007-01-04

Jim White touches on the inexplicable and the mundane in an detailed and disturbing fashion. Great sounds and engineering. I like it.

5 out of 5 stars psychedelic existentialism..........2006-04-08

I bought this album about 4 years ago.
I STILL listen to it on a regular basis.
It quickly became one of my favorite CDs.
Now Jim White's documentary, SEARCHING FOR THE WRONG EYED JESUS, has become one of my favorite movies.

It is difficult to catagorize the "type" of music this cd offers, but I think the first sentence in Amazon's editorial review does a good job of summing it all up:
"If Jim Carroll, Barry Gifford, and David Lynch all decided to put on a show called Lost Highway: The Musical, or if Lou Reed and Neil Young were to score Sling Blade II, they might come up with something that sounds like No Such Place."
If you like trippy music with profound lyrics that make you think, this cd is for you.
High quality production values set in the studio make this superb ear candy for the stoners out there looking for comraderie in a lonely world of self centered angst and bleary eyed, intellectual ennui.
And check out the movie, too.

5 out of 5 stars Jim's a Gem.......2006-01-28

I bought this CD when it first came out in 2001 and sat back and waited for the accolades. They never came. It is one probably one of the most underated CD's in history. The music is quirky and strange, and immediately strking and impressive. But the greatness of this CD are the lyric driven themes of Jim White. I can't imagine anyone not being blown away by this fine work

5 out of 5 stars I'm sorry, but how has this not been discovered yet?.......2005-10-25

Think Dylan slide guitar with a steady slow blues style and a spectacular vocal harmony keeping the groove. When I search for new music, I preview the 7th song, and I was blown away by Bound to Forget.

Listening to the rest of the album, I'd call it melodic harmonic southern blues drive mix rock, were that a genre.

I can't believe this hasn't been reviewed yet. Great music.

5 out of 5 stars a dark and beautiful dream.......2003-01-08

Two albums that I've been listening to through the past six months that have had particular lasting value include Califone's "Roomsound" and this one, Jim White's "No Such Place." Both seem to touch a deep chord with the myth of the vast open American country, the roads and the mountains and the cornfields, and the unique people that popular the nooks and crannies of this nation. These are people that wear an archetypal mask, and one might say they are joined with their story so well one can't tell if what you see is a mask, or their true face.

In this music, the context is the story of America, its dark and beautiful dream.

4 out of 5 stars Beautifully Warped.......2002-12-07

Jim White, no relation, is as an eccentric, innovative, and refreshing new artist as we've heard in a while. He, along with a small contigent of talented producers, appears to have invented a new musical hybrid-- a combination of 'country' and so-called 'trip-hop' (itself a hybrid), which we shall hereby dub 'countryp-hop'(unless someone has beaten us to it or found a better name). White writes songs that bear a melodic resemblance to country music. Then he bends them lyrically and sonically into beautifully warped gems. To get what we mean, you need only to listen to his one cover. It is a version of "King of the Road", a road where Roger Miller collides with Tom Waits. Although this no longer makes it Top Ten material, it is every bit as catchy and much more provocative than Miller's original. The instruments employed on the album-- kalimba, melodium, celeste, toy flute, sitar, etc--are not the usual array for country music. And when the 'usual' are used--dobro, banjo, mandolin, etc--it is in a totally new and imaginative way. Now some of this is just a tad too strange for these ears to 'get', but we may just keep hitting "repeat" until we do.

5 out of 5 stars No such place in corporate musicdom.......2002-11-03

I have been a fan since I first heard him live as a warm up act for the headliner he blew away. If you like his music, you must see him live and be prepared that the song performances may be vastly altered from the recorded versions. Unlike others, Jim is willing to experiment with his compositions rather than mimic them. If this type of attitude appeals to you and you are open to non-commercialized music with a dark underlying humor, buy this cd and you will enjoy it for a long time.

5 out of 5 stars "...love is a tale, told by idiots...".......2002-11-01

Jim White is a genius. I know a buncha smart people, but when I finally saw him live it occured to me that this guy is just on another level. No Such Place is reflective of that intelligence, sure, but it works emotionally and psychically as well. White is a silver voiced storyteller, taking his listener on a guided tour of jilted loves (powerful women) and lost cars (emasculated men). Songs such as "Wound That Never Heals" are so evocative of the south, it's like musical transcription of a Faulkner story, or maybe Cormac McCarthy. There are some incredibly strong moments, like "Wrong Kind of Love", "Ghost Town of My Brain" and the incredible "Corvair". There are also some weaker moments, like "God Was Drunk When He Made Me". Overall, the slick production and the subtlety and lyrical gold mine make this just a fantastic, robust, textured album.

5 out of 5 stars Lyrical Bliss.......2002-10-02

This CD starts out with the cheeky number "Handcuffed to a fence in Mississippi" which instantly grabs you. Not only for the catchy mixture of an almost alternative rockabilly sound but by the lyrical minglings that are far too captivating to be overcome even by great music.

It is quickly followed by a beautifully haunting number called "The wound that never heals" and "Corvair" which probably has more interpretations than I could list. I loved the old muted steel wound string guitar he uses in that number.

By the second listen I was inescapably hooked on almost every track on this CD. Very highly recommended.

PS: Thanks to J. Graham for introducing me to the far too unknown lyrical genius, Jim White.

This is the only cd of his that I have but it rocks. Hopefully his other cds are like this or better.

5 out of 5 stars First Review? I cant believe it........2004-02-05

This album is one of the most wonderful cd's i've ever heard. Jim White is a genius. He is a surrealist with music as his medium. His lyrics are striking from the first listen, and soul-provoking from there on out. I highly recommend buying this cd. His music is a mix of country, pop, trip hop, and minimalism. If you dont like country, this will bring you around. The incessantly catchy tune "Handcuffed" and the other gems "bound to forget" and "wrong kind of love" will have you stunned. This album was mixed by the Godfrey brothers of Morcheeba, as well as guest producers Q-Burns Abstract Message an Suchiro Suzuki. I give it 5 "rockin' surrealist singing country weirdness" stars.
