Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Joan Armatrading: A Songwriter's Songwriter.......2002-06-16

I swear that most of the people I have heard rave about Joan Armatrading as a songwriter are usually themselves songwriters (Melissa Etheridge immediately springs to mind). All you have to do is listen to "The Weakness in Me" and you will understand why this is the case. This collection of songs from A&M covers her work from 1973 to 1985, which covers her first dozen albums. You will notice that Armatrading has worked in a wide variety of styles, which earned from one critic the comment that she was a musician capable of "brilliant unorthodoxy." I hate it when I read a line like that because no matter how much I write in this review I am not going to do better than that simple, concise, elegant two word description. Armatrading is an intensely personal artist, although her lyrics never become self-indulgent, as comfortable with ballads ("The Weakness in Me") and as she is with rockers ("Kind Words") and pop standards ("Love and Affection"). She arranges her own music and plays most of the guitar work you hear, having become as comfortable with electric guitars as she obviously has been from the start with acoustic guitars.
