About the Artist
Aztec Two-Step is singer-songwriters Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman. Their 1972 self-titled debut album on Elektra Records became a staple of progressive fm and college radio.

Since then, they've made numerous recordings, toured extensively and been a "critics choice" in Billboard Magazine's year end review. They've received the New York Music Award for Best Folk Album, appeared on "The David Letterman Show," and are the subject of a documentary, "No Hit Wonder," which aired on selected PBS Stations.

Product Description
"Back in the days of horses, around one hundred years, before Corvettes or Porsches, Henry Ford shifted gears..." from the title track, Days of Horses

On Days of Horses, Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman peer under the hood of their American experience. They sing about going to a double feature and listening to top ten radio (Dad Came Home), contemplating the night sky on a warm summer night (Stargazers), and about having anti-depressants, tranquilizers and coffee for breakfast (Better These Days).

They imagine riding from Memphis to Shreveport with Scotty Moore, Bill Black and Elvis Presley, and on a wintry New York City day, they yearn for a mythic Lone Star State.

Novelist Cormac McCarthy's literary vision of the wild west is given wide-screen treatment by maverick director Billy Bob Thornton and a cast that includes Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz, and Bruce Dern. Professional country music journeyman Marty Stuart has performed with father-in-law Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, and Doc Watson, in addition to a successful solo career. In his soundtrack scoring debut, he provides short, meditative instrumental pieces that are subtly explosive--rife as they are with strains of old-school country and bluegrass. Cinematic strings and orchestral percussion add a welcome menacing edge, augmenting the rustic approach without crossing over into a compromised "countrypolitan" sound. If anything, it might be nice to hear these themes extended. As it stands, the 23 listed tracks are covered in a little under 50 minutes, with many of the cuts barely lasting more than a minute or two. They stand as a new genre of cinematic country minimalism. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars Great western soundtrack.......2004-02-28

This is a must buy for fans of western soundtracks. It mixes beautifully symphonic music with Guitar music and spices it up all together with a south of the border flavor. Haunting music that will make you want to never take it out of your cd changer. It also
Features two vocal pieces, the first a spanish song sung by the very talented Raul Malo of the country group the mavericks, the second song is a beautiful ballad sung by Marty Stuart. Though I never owned any cd's of Marty Stuart he earns my respect with composing this film score.(cowboy hats off to you Mr.Stuart)

5 out of 5 stars Truly Incredible.......2003-03-12

This album is a masterpiece. Within the first strums of the guitar, you feel as though you are among the southwestern hills. It has immediately become one of my favorites of all-time. The songs are filled with beautiful imagery, enchanting tunes, and haunting melodies. The shortness of the songs in unnoticable, as each song blends into the next, and the album itself serves as one epic journey. It is not meant to be listened to a song at a time, but as a whole. As I said, it is truly incredible. I would recommend it to absolutely anyone.

5 out of 5 stars I was dead wrong.......2005-01-10

Over the past decade it seemed as though Aztec Two Step had drifted into the abyss of many good acts: annual reunion concerts that trudged through the play list of best hits and fan favorites.

As an on/off follower of the group for nearly their entire 30-year partnership, I enjoyed these reunions but felt increasingly saddened when driving home after each concert. The duo - Rex Fowler and Neil Shulman - was living in the past and what limited new material they presented seemed to fall flat with me and the crowd. I resigned myself to acknowledging that Aztec Two Step was not much more than a nostalgia act - regardless of how highly proficient they played played guitar and sang. The only thing they seemed to have lost since their last collective album was the ability to rekindle the creative magic they once had.

Well, I was dead wrong.

Fowler and Shulman have delivered an extraordinary set of songs in Days of Horses. The theme throughout is cohesive (no, it's not about horses), the lyrics intelligent and alternatively witty and poignant, the instrumentals among the best they've ever performed, and the entire production by Paul Guzzone absolutely first-class.

Whether you're an old fan or you never heard of A2S before, this is a keeper for any listener who's drawn to folk-with-a-beat and lyrics that evoke personal reminiscing while you're listening to the tunes.

It's highly unusual for two talented performers to pick up after so many years of reunion tours and create something out of fresh cloth that's not only so fresh, solid and timely, but retains their original roots. Fowler's voice has never been clearer and distinctive; Shulman's guitar work retains its technical excellence; their harmonies can melt butter.

The title song, "Days of Horses," will get you humming the melody in the middle night when you go for a drink of water. Shulman's "Better These Days" gives us the intelligent wit that he typically displays in concerts between songs, but sadly is not displayed in his previous music. "Everybody Knows," written by Fowler, is my gem of the disc and you'll be hitting the REPLAY for this cut `till you finger wears out.

I was wrong about these guys; there's so much left in them and I hope they can figure out how to reach an audience that doesn't know they exist but would love their 30 years of collective talent.

It should give us all hope that we're never washed-up in something we once did well and loved.

4 out of 5 stars It Was Worth The Wait !.......2004-09-19

Most everyone my age (old) probably remembers the group Aztec Two Step. Their albums have been highly prized in the Folk and Folk/Rock collections of music fans throughout the country. Featuring well-written songs, strong harmonies, and excellent guitar work, many of their "hits" are easily recognizable anytime we are lucky enough to hear one on today's restrictive radio station playlists. Rex Fowler and partner Neal Shulman have released a new Aztec Two Step CD, "Days Of Horses," on Red Engine Records (RER003). Their first studio release since 1993's outstanding "Of Age," "Days Of Horses" is a fine collection of well crafted songs that will leave new and old fans alike hoping that it doesn't take another eleven years for the next album! The title song, along with "Stargazers" & "Scotty Moore, Bill Black and Elvis" rival anything Rex has written down through the years, and Neal contributes a couple of instant A2S classics in "Better These Days" and "I Don't Believe In Jesus (but I sure do like his songs)". Do yourself a favor and add this to your Aztec Two Step collection. Or, introduce yourself to a duo that has entertained fans for 31 years - and counting!

4 out of 5 stars Days Like Horses, Nights Like Broadway.......2005-05-15

I read the professional reviewer who slammed this album as not being unified and having a lot of wasted potential. I suppose one can always debate whether the glass is half full or half empty, but with no expectations other than Patrice Webb's excellent review, I found this sheer delight. The horses on the cover would lead one to believe that this is western/country music, but this disc is far from Ian Tyson territory.

Pete Nelson's "novel" in 15 chapters is filled with jazz-flavored folk tunes that hint at Broadway. The most unusual track is "The Ballad of Eddie Gay" about a cross-dressing man in his 70s that no one could quite understand. "I Love You So [What]" is a beatnik throwback to the 50s with bass & fingersnaps punctuating this catchy lighthearted tune. "It Still Makes Me Smile" is a tear-in-your-beer lounge tune that begs for the stage. Ben Demerath whose "Jack of Fools" CD and the song "Wings On Your Shoulders" is so good joins Pete for the bluesy "House of Cards" with Tom McClung's crying piano & Dan Klimoski's sobbing sax. Peter Mulvey joins Pete on the toe tapper "I Drove By Your House," "I can drive away memories. I can drive away fast. But no matter where I go, I can't escape from my past." "Good Sushi On Jupiter" is a humorous tune where our hero contemplates the afterlife where people of different faiths are sent to different planets after they die, "Buddha with your shiny head keep smiling on me 'cause I know when I'm dead, that's where I want to be. Not with those Muslims on Venus or the Jews on Mars." Susan Werner joins Pete on "You Should Fall In Love," a upbeat slow piano torch song. "After the Party's Over" concludes this set as an epilogue, a slow Crosby crooner. "Days Like Horses" is a breakup album with the songs unified by this end-of-romance theme. Pete Nelson's written some great songs and has an expressive high-pitched voice that makes this a set I keep coming back to again & again. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A modern Poet's tale of love lost or............2000-12-20

The story of a man lost then redeemed....

In what is perhaps one of the most unusual CD releases of the year, Peter Nelson sings a tale of a modern love lost. In what he calls a novel in 15 songs, Nelson's musical story is told against the backdrop of an urban skyline and tells a tale of what happens when love is lost and of the "getting to the point" where you can finally accept that it is gone and live to celebrate its remembrance.

Using touches of Reggae, Jazz, Balladry, and whimsical Folk, Nelson tells a tale of denial, anger, obsession, negotiation, forgiveness, and ultimately acceptance, by allowing the listener to step in to the songs as if this musical play belongs to the listener and is the listener's story alone.

What has emerged with this eclectic collection of songs, is one of the better surprises of the year and if at first the seemingly loopy idea of writing a novel in 15 songs seems strange, the fact that all 15 songs stand up on their own (many sounding like old standards)comes as a better surprise still.

I don't know if this is Peter Nelson's own tale of love lost, but for anyone who has ever been in love, lost at love, then spent several months obsessing over it, finally finding redemption at the other side, this CD will make you smile (and cry) and remember.

For those of you in the midst of this story this musical tale is a reminder that it does get better so...buy a bottle of expensive wine, turn down the lights, turn on the CD player and remember...it does get better.
