On Celtic Roots, the early-music revivalists Hesperus perform a selection of English, Irish, and Scottish tunes drawn from the earliest printed sources, some of which date back to the 17th century. Hesperus eschew modern instruments to play this ancient music, favoring instead period instruments like lutes, recorders, theorbos, and violas da gamba as well as the now standard harps and violins. Their performances are historically informed but there is nothing stuffy or academic about the way they play. They attack the dance tunes with a vigor that would pass muster in the rowdiest pub session and play the slow airs with deep emotion. A lot of the music will be familiar to fans of Celtic music even if the instruments used to play it are not. Hesperus have performed a valuable service in reminding us that tunes like "Soldier's Joy," "Haste to the Wedding," and "Cary Owen" are a vital link to the past. --Michael Simmons

Natalie MacMaster has been extending her scope far beyond traditional music, and reaching a wider audience, but this release takes her right back home. It's nothing more or less than a glorious ceilidh album, dance tunes played on acoustic instruments, and it's obvious from her playing that she revels in being able to do this again. These most definitely are her roots, the Scots tunes filtered through her Cape Breton home, and it's quite possible there's no one of her generation who can do this stuff better--just listen to "A Glencoe Dance Set," which was recorded live, and you'll understand that you don't need to be plugged in to generate electricity. Even the slower tunes have a bright perkiness. MacMaster's fiddle playing is completely in the Cape Breton tradition, and she never forgets this is music meant for dancing--just try sitting still while it's on. Let's hope she does it again soon. --Chris Nickson

3 out of 5 stars Just So-So!.......2007-07-21

I am a huge fan of Natalie MacMaster, but this is my least favorite of her CDs. The music is not bad--it's just sort of forgettable. There aren't any cuts that stand out such as some of the ones on Yours Truly or Blueprint. I would still recommend getting this CD if you are a fan, but I doubt that it will ever be your favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Natalie's talent and roots indeed show in these 13 beautiful traditional tunes! .......2006-11-30

It's official. "My Roots are Showing" is my favorite Natalie Macmaster CD. EVERY single song on this CD is a gem--you'll never have to touch the skip button. Just put this CD in your player and be prepared to have your breath taken away! Don't forget to keep those tissues near by, because the quality of music on this CD may bring tears to your eyes. Her duo with her uncle, Buddy Macmaster, on the last track (13) is so powerful and well performed that I will now have to buy their duet CD (Natalie and Buddy Macmaster).

The CD includes notes and source information for each song and serves to make the listening experience even more enjoyable. My favorite song--all of them! If you buy no other CD but this one of Natalie's, you will have bought one of the best CDs of Cape Breton Island fiddling ever produced! I hope she can continue to present even more traditional tunes and make a part II to this wonderful collection.

5 out of 5 stars The Art of Fiddling.......2006-11-15

The world of the amateur violinists is populated with the aspiring fiddlers. They have lust for fiddling, but are lacking the je-ne-sais-quoi that makes the fiddling sound right. They over-fiddle, under-fiddle, they are too rhythmic, they are not rhythmic enough. They sound too folksy, or too artsy. They are plain boring.
Move over, the Salieris of the fiddling, here comes Natalie MacMaster, the Mozart of the fiddling!
She has produced a terrific record, "My Roots Are Showing", on the traditional fiddle music of Cape Breton Island. This record can be used as a teaching tool for the Salieris of the fiddling (this reviewer being one of them). Natalie MacMaster takes a steady tempo, not faster than what is suitable for dancing. She builds a momentum, and does not let you go. Her playing is energetic and spirited. She keeps the melody clear and simple, and uses her bow to accentuate, by throwing it on the string to produce the most attractive biting sound. She controls her emotions superbly, but will have you lose control over yours. You will find yourself clapping hands, tapping your feet, and dancing in your seat, all of this in your living room.
This record is an absolute must for your music library.
I dedicate this review to Dr. Andrew B. Dempster, who showed me his native Scotland, country of such beautiful music, and helped me bond with it.

5 out of 5 stars Experience a most welcome departure from the ordinary........2006-01-13

A couple of years ago my wife and I had the great good fortune to travel to Cape Bretton Island at the eastern end of Nova Scotia. Often compared to the Scottish Highlands, Cape Bretton Island is a breathtakingly beautiful place. Part of what makes this place so unique is the traditional fiddle music of the island. You hear it just about everywhere you go. When we returned from our trip we discovered the music of Natalie MacMaster on our local public radio station. And while this is not the type of stuff I generally listen to "My Roots Are Showing" is a delightful CD.
It seems that Natalie MacMaster is on a mission. She is determined to attract more people to traditional Cape Breton music. And what's not to like? "My Roots Are Showing" features a wide variety of styles from jigs to reels and Strathspeys. Mind you I am just learning about this form of music so I cannot speak about it with any authority. What I do know however is that this disc is a joy to listen to. The musicianship is first rate all around. In addition, I found the eight page booklet very helpful as I attempt to educate myself about traditional Cape Bretton fiddle music. "My Roots Are Showing" is a nice addition to our music library. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars My Second Favorite Natalie cd.......2004-02-17

I have all of Natalie's cd's, and can heartily recommend all of them. "My Roots Are Showing" is probably my second favorite of her CDs. The traditional side of Cape Breton and Scottish music is most appealing to me, and this CD (with "Fit As A Fiddle" -- my favorite) is a fantastic example of the genre and Natalie's virtuoso playing. If you are looking for experiments with country, jazz and pop, "Blueprint", "In My Hands" or "No Boundaries" are better bets. Although the "tunes" (if you have heard Natalie pronounce that word with her wonderful Cape Breton accent, you will understand why I put that in quotes) on My Roots are Showing are traditional through and through, the jigs and reels really rock! I can't help but try to sing along whenever I listen to this music, which is no mean feat as all of the tunes are instrumental.

3 out of 5 stars Very good but could have been a monster.......2003-07-22

First off, I have to agree with everyone that this band is best heard live. They have never produced a studio album that can compare with their live show. If you ever get the chance, go see them! That being said, this cd left me feeling somewhat confused. There is so much on here that could have put them over the top but for some reason it just didn't quite cut it. Listen to the ballad "Sweet Orphan". That song could have been a major hit but the vocals just don't fit the song. Then there is #7, N.O.T. (I Want My People Back). This song seems to be a rather poor attempt at a pop hit song and it fails miserably. The rest of the cd is very good and some of it borders on greatness! Calvin Crozier, Twelve, and Mother Mary are fantastic songs that belong in anyones Celtic library. One of these days this band will put out their magnum opus but this one, while somewhat close, is not it.

5 out of 5 stars they keep up with the times without losing there heritage!!.......2001-10-10

I personaly thought that this CD rocks. The whole band rocks. They keep up with the times with the rock but they also have the old celtic in there music as well. Its GREAT!!!!!! I would highly recomemnd it to anyone wo likes music.
ME

5 out of 5 stars First CD I bought after seeing them Live........2001-08-20

I first saw this band in the summer of 2000 at Irish Fest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin... twice. They blew me away. This is the CD I bought there at the Summerfest grounds, because it had the most songs that I remembered from the performance. They even autographed the inside of the cover for me! I've nearly worn this CD out, and even my parents (hard-core Celtic music fans), like it. I especially enjoy, the Factory Song, the Ballad of Calvin Crozier and Twelve, but everything grows on you. I love their sound. I saw them again at Irish Fest this year, and their live shows never disappoint. Hail to the Milwaukee Irish Fest "Arse-kickers" in the downpour!

5 out of 5 stars A magickal marriage.......2001-03-15

A magickal marriage of highland tradition and stomp-your-feet-while-thrashing-your-head-about (looking like Angus Young) rock

4 out of 5 stars Musicians who actually know how to play!.......2000-12-20

The first thing that must be remembered is that Seven Nations is a band that MUST be heard live to be fully appreciated. After seeing a live concert by them any recording is going to fall short. With this in mind The Factory is still a great CD. It is such a relief to find a band that can rock, yet knows how to play instuments and write music. In my oppinion The Factory is their best song ever. If that chorus doesn't get stuck in your head you aren't human. The same with Calvin Crozier. This Season, Twelve, and Sweet Orphan are great bittersweet tracks. And the instramental tracks like Soft Gator Girl really show how talented the band is. However tracks like Heros in Tennis Shoes... I think it may be a commentary on America, but who knows? That and Daze of Grace (which kinda grows on you) are the only things that keep this from a 5 star rating. So buy and enjoy.

Album Description

Recorded over a five day period in Pictou, Nova Scotia, this disc captures the talents of every member of this band. The live studio feel of the recording makes you feel as if you were there. "God" and "Scream" have been stripped down for the acoustic sound, but have lost none of their original textures. The singalong of "All You People," which was co-written by Aidan McGovern, is a hand-clapping, toe-tapping choral fusion. The beautiful piano solos of "Skyezinha / The Egret" bring all that energy a quiet place to rest just before launching into the pub song "A Rare Auld Time." This seventh independent recording by Seven Nations is dedicated to everyone who has supported the band from the beginning and shows the promise of the fine musicianship that blends together so well as a glimpse of what's to come.

5 out of 5 stars Scottish rock.......2006-08-02

I just loved this cd the very first time I heard it. I had heard a cut from a friend's mix called, God. It made me want to get the whole cd and it is certainly a winner! Every cut is just wonderful and exactly what I was looking for. If you like the scottish theme, bagpipes and rock and violin you won't be disappointed in this selection.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite CDs.......2006-07-02

Of all the Seven Nations albums, the Pictou Sessions has got to be the best. (I haven't heard Thanks for Waiting yet). This really shows the bands style in the fiddle-pipe collaborations in the lively jigs, blended well with Kirk McLeod's vocals and piano in some of the mellower tunes. Pick this CD up, and see them live, they are awesome!

5 out of 5 stars Very good band!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-10-22

Everything happened when I listened to them for the first time two months ago, through internet. They are very original. Besides the album "Palace Theatre" has really contributed to a new concept of rock and roll. I hope one day they come to Brazil in order to make a show, I'm sure they will have a lot of fans who will love seeing them singing alive.

5 out of 5 stars You need to hear these guys..........2004-07-15

I saw 7N live for the first time last September at the Irish Fest in Albany, NY. They absolutley blew me away. I was mainly there for the beer, and to catch Hair of the Dog later that night, but I got a tip from a friend who told me to check these guys out. The bagpipes gave me chills, and the energy was unbelievable. This CD is on repeat in my car, but like everyone says, you need to see them live. It's truly an unbelievable experience. I'm flying out to Cleveland this summer to catch them again.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for 7 Nations.......2006-02-09

I was extremly happy with this product. It arrived only 3 days after I ordered it which was a great surprise for me seeing as I live so far away. The cd case was broke, but as far as I am concerned it's what was inside that mattered. The cd is in prefect condition and I am very pleased with the music on the cd. For not hearing most of the songs before ordering it, I was very happy with it and would order from them again in a heartbeat.

5 out of 5 stars 7N Rocks.......2005-03-25

I first saw these guys in a tiny Irish pub in St.Pete, Florida. I've been listening to them ever since. This album has a few remakes of earlier songs, made even better by the encorporation of the fiddle. Even if you don't favor bagpipes, this Celtic rock definately grows on you.

3 out of 5 stars not the best but you can't go wrong with any 7N.......2003-02-18

The self titled album is definitely not the best of seven nations albums. I own every last one of them and the album i listen to the least is this one because it's not really a good representation of the band. It's somewhat contrived and it tries to be sort of a greatest hits for new listeners. my recommendation would be to purchase every other 7N album you can find and then make a judgement.

The close mindedness of some people over the change in the band's sound is upsetting. While they are undoubtedly not as folky or traditional as they once were, their sound has matured and continues to become better and better. What should be focused on instead is the spirit and energy behind the band. Seven nations is a band that anyone who knows anything about celtic music should include in their library. you won't go wrong.

1 out of 5 stars To Au Contraire..........2003-01-22

Although I don't see how it is possible to be a fan before Clan Na Gael (check your spelling), I would beg to differ with your statements.

What the band used to be versus what they have become are two almost completely different bands. They used to be magical, a musical force that could haunt, mesmerize, entrance, and obliterate all in one song. Believe it or not, I have listened to each album after "Big Dog" and they have not grown as you claim. Because today, they are like any other Dave Matthews-cloned band out there only with a bagpipe and fiddle. Their uniqueness is gone. I would have had much more respect for them if they had stayed true to their original sound and made it versus selling out. It truly is sad to see what they have become.

And the worst thing of all is the butchering of such classics as "Scream", "God", and "Milky Way". I kind of like the new version of "Big Dog" though. I know they are Kirk's songs (Milky Way excluded) and he can do whatever he wants with them, but if you listen to "Scream" from this album and then listen to the original version from "Old Ground", you will be able to see the point I am trying to make a little better.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS CD OR ANYTHING AFTER BIG DOG!!!.......2003-01-09

Having followed the band from their traditional days as Clan Na Gael, almost 10 years ago, I have watched this band sadly as they sell out and go mainstream. Their old albums, Rain and Thunder, Old Ground, and Big Dog, are such superior albums to the [junk] they spin out now. Do yourself a favor and don't bother with any of their new stuff unless they bring back Neil and Nick!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!![.].......2003-06-23

I had never heard of Seven Nations before last night when I saw them at Harbor Fest in Racine, Wisconsin. I happened to get to the festival as they were on stage. I was completely blown away. I immediately asked someone next to me who they were and where they were from. After watching their show, I went out today and found this disk at a small CD store and bought it. It is great. I am so glad I happened to find out about this band and I can't wait to see them again.

5 out of 5 stars Seven Nations Live - Still the best!.......2003-04-06

Seven Nations is an amazing live band. There's just no way to describe it. I can go on and on about how awesome and talented they are, but you won't believe it unless you go out and watch them in concert. They're always touring so look on their web site: www.sevennations.com. I'm sure they'll be in your area soon. Anyway, I love them. I have seen them live upwards of 15 times! Buy it and see them live!

5 out of 5 stars A great band in its best form!.......2003-02-17

Seven Nations is is a great band who deliver an ecletic sound of great lyrics, fiddles, and pipes. They are legendary for their live perfomances, myself seeing them many times. This CD captures their amazing and fun live sound. This CD engulfs the listener with a terrific mix of lyricaly impressive songs and an amazing traditional sound. The fiddle player Dan (who also does traditional step dancing) is in a league of his own. He is a true master of his instrument and will blow you away with his sound. This CD is for those who love traditional irish music at its best and those who are intrigued by an amazing melding of rock and irish fervour. A must have!

5 out of 5 stars Seven Nations at their best!.......2002-12-03

Anyone that has heard this album will tell you that it is difficult to hear without feeling the need to move. Tap your feet, clap, dance, whatever... just don't sit still! Seven Nations has produced some fine music in the past, but their live performances, from large venues right down to smaller clubs, never disappoint, and with "Palace Theater" you feel like you are right there with them.

This is a fine album, and will probably be remembered as their best.

5 out of 5 stars Honestly.......2002-04-20

I have to make this brief, because I haven't had a chance to listen to this CD yet. I just came back from my first Seven Nations concert, and I LOVED it!!!! I have never been to anything like it before. The music was so amazing, all the band members were so talented, and the banter between songs was hilarious. All I can say, if the CD can capture even a fraction of how good a live show is, buy it, buy it, buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Not as greaat as Riverdance and Lord of the Dance but music's still good........2005-07-30

Although the music's doesn't compete with Riverdance, let alone "Lord of the Dance" this is still filled with lovely songs once again great music. "Timedance" and "Chetvorno Horo" are my favorite songs, but I also like "Mystic Seacliffs" and "Bridge Attack" and of course, "Women of the Sidhe" from Riverdance. It's all pretty good music, and if you like Riverdance, then well, enjoy

5 out of 5 stars OK, anything related to RIVERDANCE gets 5 stars!.......2002-07-11

But, to be honest, this music is not quite as soul-hauntingly lovely as Riverdance. But what's great about this album is that it gives us RD fanatics, a chance to get a glimpse of how the phenonemom that is Riverdance developed!

Highly reccommended to all the other RD nuts out there. Of course, I can't imagine anyone who doesn't absolutely love Riverdance buying this album! Chuckles and grins... :)

5 out of 5 stars Roots of Riverdance/Bill Whelan........2001-06-18

Bill Whelan is a genius! From the very first time I listened to his music in Riverdance I automatically fell in love with this wonderful type of music. Here in Mexico the Celtic music is not quite popular, and it's difficult to find albums like this, but fortunately I have this one and I highly recommend it. The music is beautiful, and I keep wondering how gifted was this man to have the ability to write such nice compositions. Definitely, if you like Celtic music, you will enjoy this album indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible... Enchanting... A must buy for Whelan fans.......1998-09-01

I purchased this box set only knowing of Whelan's work with the Riverdance score. I was not disappointed... far from it! The Soundtrack to 'Some Mother's Son' has not left my CD player since I put it in there 5 days ago... The other discs that come in the set are just as fabulous... Riverdance, Roots of Riverdance, and the Seville Suite. If you're a fan of the Riverdance score... then by all means, treat yourself to some of his other fantastic works.

This collection takes the internationally known group back to their roots, drawing together the best of Clannad's early recordings. Though not as commercial or pop-oriented as their later work--the instrumentation is all acoustic and there's a definite Irish lilt to even the English lyrics--the smooth, deft touch that is a hallmark of Clannad's style is definitely there. An Díolaim showcases their folk roots, but such songs as "Siuil a Run," "Cumha Eoghain Rua Ui Neill," and "By Chance It Was" hint at the direction they would later take--The Chieftains this ain't. It is, however, a fine collection in its own right, showing very clearly the evolution of present-day Celtic-oriented music. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars *****ELEANOR PLUNKETT*****.......2006-04-20

I don't know who she is...sounds like she could really be a wallflower, but if she is half as beautiful as her song, I'd probably fall in love (nice instrumental, with Maire playing harp along with guitar and flute - simple but sweet...the best kind?). And what about her perhaps even more striking sisters on here: FAIRLY (#4 - another sharp instrumental lullaby...recital on harp, flute & guitars in the front parlor...she can cook, a keeper!); SIUIL (#5 - a love song so pretty, highlighting Maire's gorgeous voice, the guitar is very lush...mix of Gaelic and English, though lyrics and translations would have been a help...she carries YOU away); and especially the transcendantly fine CHUAIGH (#13 - in Gaelic again, my favorite on here, I would love to know the storyline, but her beauty speaks for itself...language and instrumentation in heavenly unity...is that Enya providing the harmony? I'd like to make an offer!). Even CUMHA compares favorably (#11, a nice little instrumental that is more common sounding, but still a very lilting, pleasant charmer...she is still presentable at the ball, maybe someday she could be dressed up a little more to attract attention). I would be remiss for not honoring the last pretty thing, COMLEACH (#14, last but certainly not least in the melodic string of pretty ballads...this one jazzier with string bass, cool guitar AGAIN and Maire's sweet voice...WOW! Sophisticated & well-spoken). By Chance It Was deserves honorable mention in the ballad category, very spooky, melancholy and lush.

Okay, sorry for the awkward analysis but I do FEEL this music and its beauty like a, well you know... This family touches me musically, emotionally, spiritually and I admire their great talents. Friends who know my usual music listening (acid rock, psychedelic, fusion jazz, etc. - I've been a guitar player for almost 30 years) may be surprised that I have such a love for this fine old folk music. It isn't as much of a stretch as you would think, listen to #6, Oheanainn Sugradh, a taste of psychedelic Clannad (kickin' up the drums and Tullish guitar and flute leads, they can rock!). Or An Gaohar Ban (#12), another rollicking Celtic jam. My Scottish/Irish heritage wife and I rediscovered Clannad when our second darling son was born 10 years ago, so this reminds us of that (he listened to them nursing often so I'm SURE it anchors special feelings somewhere, the female/song analogy will seem very on target), and we listen to this as we go off to sleep all the time ...who knows how it has permeated our dreams). I need to mention that my wife really favors the funny/upbeat songs on here like Two Sisters, Dulaman, the Galtee Hunt and Rince...(#9). There is a nice balance of styles and moods for all personality types. The Maire vocal solo of the very traditional Gaoth...(#10) is the circle on the Celtic cross, the reminder that, at heart, Clannad is a very respectful purveyor of the essence of Irish culture and music (the unifying purpose). Thank you Brennan family for this transcendant musical collection and for sharing your love with all! And Maire, your heavenly singing has brought me calming peace so many times, I don't know how to express my thanks.

5 out of 5 stars very original and hearty Clannad.......2004-02-04

the first time I listen to this CD is dl mp3 (the whole disc)
the Clannad then is completely different! sound is more like Folk than New Age
the whole disc sound is so beautiful, only Anam and Banba can compare
though the early-age recording, Maire sounds incredible, her sound is as good as Karen Carpenter (may be better)
then I decide to get the CD
after listening the whole CD, I admit
An Diolaim, Anam, and Banba are my favorite album of Clannad
no matter you're a die-hard Clannad fans or not, this one is A MUST collection

5 out of 5 stars Essential Early Clannad.......2002-05-31

With 'An Diolaim' a compilation of the Clannad records of the mid-seventies: 'Clannad 2' and 'Dulaman', has been made available to the admirers of this group. Showcased here are their purest folk roots. I made the acquaintance of Clannad by means of their music for the 'Robin of Sherwood' television series, but I dearly love them in all of their musical incarnations.

This group originally comprised of Maire Brennan, her brothers Ciaran and Pol plus their uncles Noel and Padraig Duggan have won themselves a lasting place in Celtic Music. The 'An Diolaim' album provides the listener with performances of mainly traditional pieces sung for the most part in Gaelic. The interpretation by Clannad of these songs and instrumental pieces is intelligent, sparkling, wistful and simply beautiful. They're always able to hold my attention completely. Maire's breathtakingly beautful vocals take center stage, but I also really enjoyed the interplay between the various instruments. Some favourites are: 'Dulaman', 'Eleanor Plunkett' with exquisite harpplaying by Maire, the lilting 'Two Sisters', the haunting 'Siuil A Run', the wistful 'By chance it was' or the lovely 'Rince Philio a Cheoil'.

My only caveat with this disc is that no lyrics were included, but there's a handy mini essay by John Crosby on Clannad's history. Anyway the listener gets an excellent album of essential early Clannad music and songs.

5 out of 5 stars Before Celtic was cool.......2002-03-06

These are songs from Clannad's earlier period, before they began to emulate ex-band member Enya's sound and cater to the rather bland tastes of the `world music' crowd. "An Diolaim" covers the band's recordings during an early period of their development (i.e. the early to mid 1970s), when they more consistently employed traditional sounds and instruments (although the influence of contemporary sounds can definitely be heard). There is a strong selection of songs with both Gaelic and English lyrics - and it is basically a collection of Celtic-inspired songs largely released before Celtic became trendy (at least outside of Clannad's native Ireland). Particularly strong tracks are the melancholy instrumental pieces "Eleanor Plunkett" and "Cumha Eoghain Rua Ui Neill" and the very folky "Two Sisters" and "The Gaelic Hunt." Also interesting is the not unpleasant blend of Celtic flutes, accoustic guitar and acidy electric-guitar riffs in "Dheanainn Sugradh." For the most part, this is a really great collection of contemporary Celtic.

5 out of 5 stars The Pre-Best of...........2001-09-21

This is a great CD in case if you still haven't managed to get the earliest albums by Clannad like Clannad 2 or Fuaim. Whenever you get the feeling that Clannad got too deep into pop, mainstream and commercialism, An Diolaim is surely the best way to flee to those olden times both of Irish music and Clannad. There is also the old recording of An Choinleach Glas an Fhomhair, later re-recorded and re-issued on Magical Rings. Quite haunting are harp-instrumentals like Fair Shot of Her and Eleanor Plunkett, but most of all I'd emphasize really beautiful Chuaigh me na Rossan, where the group, pace by pace - which is evident in adding the electric organ - treads toward what was later on to be one of the most interesting, most haunting and most inovative sounds in the history of contemporary music. Still, while listening to this CD, it is hard not to think: My... Who could have said...

5 out of 5 stars Bullock is a first class musician of breathtaking ability.......2004-06-29

I was familiar with Robin's work with the eclectic acoustic trio, Helicon, and I even had the great honor of his musical accompaniment at a local art fair gig once. Knowing about his mastery of many instruments, I've been wanting to get this album of his for quite some time. Robin plays nine different instruments on "Midnight Howl." Steve Bloom's percussion is right on, and we also hear some expert bodhran, wooden flute and Celtic harp from Myron Bretholz, Chris Norman and Sue Richards, respectively. No slouches there! The CD starts with a lively "John MacKenzie's Fancy" that imparts a rhythmic intensity that is very powerful. Throughout the journey, he follows his quick paced romps with leisurely musical strolls. Arrangements are well thought out, and it's a true pleasure to hear the genesis of 8-minute numbers like "Jaybird Suite" and "Ash Grove Suite." Robin Bullock is a first class musician of breathtaking ability. (Joe Ross, Roseburg, OR.)

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!.......2003-04-28

I have become a huge Robin Bullock fan, and this CD "Midnight Howl" is just the latest of his works that I have aquired. These tunes are a beautiful blending of a little Celtic, a little "Hillbilly", a little Bluegrass, and a lot of pride. This is such a beautiful work, I would have to place it close to one of my favorites. I believe, if you like string music with a down home flavor, you should give this work a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2000-02-02

I discovered Robin Bullock when he toured a couple years ago with Celtic accordian madman John Whelan. Bullock is an outstanding musician. I had to have the CD that included a song called "For Ireland I'd Not Tell Her Name." That turned out to be "Midnight Howl." A beautiful song, as is every piece on this CD. If you enjoy Celtic and traditional instrumental music suitable for relaxing and dreaming on a snowy or rainy day, don't miss this recording!

There covers wail and their original music is incredible. I highly recommend both of their CDs. If you have a chance to see Carbon Leaf live, it's definitely worth the trip. I'm waiting for the day when these guys hit it big.

Carbon Leaf's best offering to date, Ether is a great addition to the collection of anyone who likes the Pogues, Son Volt, Waterboys, Wilco, etc. Rootsy in an Appalachian way, but from a band that still has all of its teeth, Ether features music with twang and a certain smack. Favorite tracks are Home and Ordinary Eyes.
