Originally released in 1997 on the defunct Guardian label, Catie Curtis's second album marked her arrival as one of the most tuneful and perceptive songwriters of the Lilith generation. Matched with producer Roy Bittan of Bruce Springsteen's E-Street Band, Curtis's songs of emotional and spiritual recovery drew on her background as a social worker and, of all things, a drummer. The beat-savvy layers may be handled by session pro Kenny Aronoff and drum programmer George Black--Curtis does supply pizza box percussion on "I Don't Cry Anymore"--but they blend sympathetically with Curtis's percussive guitar work and Bittan's spacious piano- and mandolin-rich production. Along with Triple-A radio hit "Soulfully" (featured in Dawson's Creek), songs like "River Winding" and "Memphis" suggest a witty and wistful narrative ambition that separates her from her acoustic-aimed peers. --Roy Kasten

Singer-songwriter Catie Curtis's albums always arrive as elegant, but unassuming, presents. Like those of her friend, Mary Chapin Carpenter, who guests here with gorgeous alto harmonies on "Water and Stone," Curtis's songs are beautifully and deceptively well crafted, her production tastefully understated, and her singing so heartbreakingly pure, pained, and devoid of artifice as to suggest she knows not only your secrets, but your soul. The theme that runs through these 12 disarming songs is one of reconnection, both with a lover and with the world, but in a way that makes things better--that makes a difference. "People Look Around," a song about the aftermath of Katrina that Curtis co-wrote with Mark Erelli, won the 2006 International Songwriting Competition grand prize, beating out 15,000 entries from 82 countries. But there are other songs here that might have done the same. Curtis is at her emotional best when she is full of longing that won't be resolved, when she gives voice to feelings that refuse to stay hidden, and when she acts on desires that won't be dismissed. "Find You Now," with its imagery of seeing a potential lover's headlights crawl across her bedroom wall, is a perfect example. But it's the chorus--"Did you drop your flowers / Underneath the bridge / They're floating on a river / Blowing like a kiss"--that destroys you. Despite her 15 years of playing and criss-crossing the country, Curtis has yet to achieve the notoriety and status she deserves. But perhaps deliverance is only on the other side of this Long Night Moon. --Alanna Nash

Album Description

With a dedicated fan base across the U.S. and Europe and with help from Mary Chapin Carpenter and an impressive roster of seasoned players, Catie Curtis' latest release, Long Night Moon, is one of the most highly-anticipated releases of 2006 for devotés of the singer-songwriter tradition. With ten years of recordings under her belt, the songs on Long Night Moon speak deftly in the voice of a woman who understands fully the joys and frustrations of adulthood without compromising the wit and gentle spirit that have always characterized her work. Backed by a stellar band including John Jennings (Mary Chapin Carpenter), John Sands (Aimee Mann), Mark Rivard (Morphine, Shawn Colvin), Kevin Barry (Paula Cole, Jonatha Brooke). The CD was produced by Lorne Entress.

Featuring: Mary Chapin Carpenter, Kris Delmhorst, Mark Erelli, Erin McKeown and Chris Trapper (The Push Stars).

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music.......2007-03-08

I purchased this after reading a review in Adoptive Families. I have enjoyed listening to every track...but Goodnight Moon is still my favorite. Catie Curtis is so talented...I just wish I would have found her earlier!
Well worth the money...I highly recommend the CD.

5 out of 5 stars Hey Massachusetts.......2007-03-05

I've owned (and not frequently listened to) two earlier albums by Catie Curtis. By chance, I've given this one enough listens to get to know it. And I like what I hear. I'm going to go back and get to know the earlier ones in my collection.

This album reflects both a social conscience of trying to make the world a better place when you leave it than it was when you entered it (Passing Through). It also has considerable sass ("Hey California"), a very musical and whimsical comparison of life in Beantown and life in California (more specifically LA).

The album is well produced, with Ms. Curtis' voice the first instrument, but also has a full "background section" of guitar, bass, drums, etc., limited to times when it is appropriate.

I'm not quite sure whether I'd call this a great "singer/songwriter" album or a great "contemporary folk" album. Either way, it's great.

3 out of 5 stars Long Night Moon.......2007-01-10

I wasn't wrapped in this album. Catie Curtis has a great voice and the production is excellent, but the lyrics and the subject matter were a bit twee. She's obviously rejoicing in life with her kids and all and giving out messages about how great this planet is and how we need to care for it and each other, but listening to this album was a bit like going to a meeting of happy clappers. It didn't work for this Aussie.

5 out of 5 stars Catie lives up to her usual............2007-01-10

Catie Curtis lives up to her usual singer songwriter talents in her latest endeavor, Long Night Moon. However, the quality of this album surpasses her other CD's which I would rate at least 4 out of a high 5. Her writing is more mature and insightful and the music more varied. I look forward to the next one and the one following. Catie is a rare gem!

4 out of 5 stars Jimmy Cash.......2007-01-05

You know, I purchased this c-d upon hearing the track "WATER & STONE".When I played the entire disc the first time, I really wasn't that impressed. But,as I heard other tracks played on the radio, I realized how good this recording is. Catie is an excellent singer-songwriter,worthy of attention. Pick up this c-d, you will not be disappointed, J.C.

A Crash Course in Roses finds Boston-based singer-songwriter Catie Curtis streamlining the sound that made her 1997 self-titled release a critical breakthrough. Eschewing lush string and horn arrangements, she allows her songwriting and singing to take center stage on this 13-song set of midtempo, acoustic-flavored folk-pop. An excellent group of musicians (including Morphine drummer Billy Conway) create an intimate backdrop for Curtis's warm, enticing voice. The spare, no-frills arrangements complement the simple honesty of love songs such as "Gave Me Love" and "Magnolia Street." While Curtis clearly works the same musical and emotional terrain as Shawn Colvin and Mary Chapin Carpenter (who sings backup vocals here), she lacks their lyrical and musical bite. These are pretty songs and, taken together, they make for a pretty--though not exceptional--collection. --Percy Keegan

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2004-07-03

I heard the song 'Troubled Mind' from Truth From Lies and was amazed, so I immediately went out to look for the CD ... they didn't have it, in fact, they didn't have anything by Catie Curtis in the record store. I was disappointed but decided I'd wait until I had more money to get it off the internet. I still don't have it - but, I stumbled upon this CD at a used music store and decided to buy it since I liked 2 of her other songs.
This is such a mellow CD, a perfect listen for those lonely or moping around days. I am so glad I bought this gem. Some songs speak better than others, my favourites being 100 Miles, Fall Away, Wise To The Ways, Burn Your Own House Down and Magnolia Street. Even though some songs seem lacking such as Gave Me Love which seems to repeat too much and Start Again which sometimes seems a bit boring, this CD is a great listen and a good buy, I recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Let me play just one more song.......2003-10-15

Even if the world "don't owe her nothing," Catie Curtis is still willing to lay her troubles down and play one more song. Many songs seems to be dealing with the confusion we often feel in relationships when our world if falling apart. Whether it is a relationship where you have been completely honest or one where you have secrets.

Catie Curtis delves into the world of pain, love, loss and even hope. You can hear the longing for unconditional love in her lyrics. She seems to be singing about a woman who has a deep need for understanding and is exploring life in a thoughtful way. The lyrics also express the desires of a heart that is ready to fall and fall hard, but only for someone willing to help her understand the complexities of relationships.

"Gave Me Love" - Seems to be speaking about a friend who loves unconditionally. Maybe the type of friendship we all secretly desire and sometimes try to give. "Don't give up on me now."

"World Don't Owe Me" - If you have ever realized how much we are not owed and how blessed we are by gifts from friends we never thought we'd ever meet or gifts we receive as surprises. This is about resolution, about just sitting back and saying that even though we are not "owed anything" there are things that could make our lives easier and happier and more beautiful.

"100 Miles" - One of my favorite songs. If you've ever wondered where you are in a relationship this will make so much sense to you. It seems to deal with insecurity and a fear of ending a relationship that already seems to be ending on its own. I love the lyrics:

"It's gonna rain, it's gonna pour
Through sickness and worse can I love you more
You carried me when I fell
Can I carry you, can I love that well."

"Far Away" - A wistful song about taking a lover for granted and asking for a deeper commitment. "Are we building trust, or just taking chances?"

"Wise to the Ways" - She doesn't know what makes her cry anymore. Does this mean she is crying over everything? A world-weary song. If she said what she should say, she would be screaming. A stark picture of reality.

"What's the Matter" - The moon dances on the waves in a town where there are no city lights. She questions why people fear other people because of their choices or backgrounds, religion or nationality.

"I'll Cover You" - Mysterious and caring all at once and strikes me as being quite beautiful in meaning. If you were ever worried about life, this is the song you'd want to hear a friend sing. Emotionally satisfying.

"Burn Your Own House Down" - Seems to be speaking about a friend who is giving up on a relationship and wants to destroy their world. Maybe it is about staying in a relationship and trying to find love where you first found it. How often does anyone believe in you and tell you that they see hope in a failed relationship? She seems to be saying that her friend should look at the relationship from a new perspective.

"Roses" - An entire landscape of emotions.

"Look at You Now" - Tribute to a friend who made it through the tough times.

"Stay Up All Night" - Sassy seduction. If she could just stay up all night with the person of her dreams.

"Magnolia Street" - This song really gets to me. It is about destiny and knowing you love someone when you first meet them. "A dream, but it's true, I am not the same since I met you."

"Start Again" - Cute lyrics about a second chance.

Hidden Track - Keep listening after Start Again. A song appears! ;)

I love Catie Curtis' voice and how it mingles in an ethereal beauty within an intimate circle of warmth created by the added energy of improvisation. Each song is filled with deep feelings and lots of introspection.

Thanks to you. ;) Another find from a friend who knows where my heart lives.

Her best. Her most beautiful. Gentle lyrics. The hidden track is amazing. 'Magnolia Street' is one of the best songs ever written. A must own cd!

5 out of 5 stars Stunningly good.......2000-06-17

When you are absolutely floored by an album from a genre that is nowhere near your favorite, you know it's great. I bought this CD after hearing the beautiful "100 Miles" on public radio, and was delighted I took the chance. This is the best album of 1999. No question. Curtis gives her singer/songwriter folk songs an occasional rhythmic kick in the pants that does wonders for them. "World Don't Owe Me", "Wise to the Ways", "What's the Matter", "Fall Away": all magnificent. The second half of the CD is less astonishing, but overall this is highly, highly recommended. That voice! Beautiful and ordinary, like your dear friend who sings. Clever, understated lyrics that cling to you like benign leeches. This is the kind of CD that makes you wish you knew her. Buy this.

Now a veteran of the New England singer-songwriter scene, Catie Curtis offers her most musically seductive album in 2001, but that's not necessarily good news. Backed by longtime friends Jimmy Ryan (formerly of the Blood Oranges and one of the most tasteful, compelling players in folk rock), bassist Andrew Mazzone, and young guitar-slinger Duke Levine, Curtis pushes further towards the danceable folk-pop of Shawn Colvin and Sheryl Crow, and pulls back from the close-to-the-bone songwriting that was once her signature. With the exception of the Southern working-class portrait "Sugar Cane" (co-written with Mary Gauthier) and closer "The Big Reprise" (a prickly meditation on divine injustice), Curtis mostly slips into the girl-meets-girl sentimentality of the title track, the adult contemporary clichés of opener "Run," or the haphazard coffeehouse diary of "Patience." The latter is a virtue these songs reveal too rarely. --Roy Kasten

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Pleasant arrangements.......2005-02-20

I had not heard this artist before, but I bought this after listening to some samples. What strikes me about Catie is that her voice sounds almost identical to that of Edie Brickell. Many of the arrangements on "My Shirt Looks Good On You" are similar to "Ghost of a Dog" by Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians. The material is not quite on the same level as "Ghost", however. A few songs are quite nice (including the opening piece "Run"). Most of the rest of the first half are somewhat sophomoric and banal (especially the title track "My Shirt Looks Good On You", which is almost embarrassing) but pleasant enough. The album picks up steam again, though, about track 9, "Elizabeth", and finishes strong.

Recommended, with reservations

5 out of 5 stars This one grows on you . . ........2003-01-22

This CD was obviously a victim of bad timing (it was released in September 2001) because it has not gotten the play it deserves. The first spin through this CD left me wondering whether I would completely "connect" with the songs and then I left it in my CD changer for about a week on random play and I found myself enjoying every song more and more, the more times I heard it. You will not be disappointed by this CD. Rumor has it that she also has an all-accoustic CD available only on her website.

4 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise.......2003-01-02

I was sampling CDs when I gave this one a try. I bought it and have been thrilled with my purchase. I am really surprised there are some extremely negative reviews here. She is fresh and original which is hard to come by.

4 out of 5 stars A great CD.......2002-08-10

I had never heard of Catie Curtis before reading a magazine article about her, and I admit buying this partly because I think she's so cute. But she has a great voice too--lightly romantic but not saccharine.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2002-02-28

Curtis's fifth album is her most musically engaging and her most lyrically risky; despite the sunny, acoustic backdrops, these songs are fairly dark, frequently skeptical portraits of private and public doubt. She pits the deep resilience of humans against life's equally deep violence, stares down love's deceptions, and questions the easy answers of faith, as well as the powers of her own imagination. The angels of "Deliver Me" are broken and covered in mud; the girl in "Red Light" watches a carnival town, as well as her innocence, burn. "I lost my one way ticket home, I'm at a busted telephone," Curtis sings on "Hold On," her finest breakup song, "And I got no way to show you you're not alone." In the end, Curtis's honesty and steadily maturing voice are the consolations that last. --Roy Kasten

who me? yup, big fan of Catie.

Once I was hooked, had to buy all her CDs. This one is the same great stuff as the others. Sexy, smooth.. makes me want to cry.. something about Catie's songs get to me. The sound, the lyrics, I sure don't know what it is that gets under my skin and makes me FEEL so much. Hurts so good!

Saint Lucy, catchy tune, gets me humming. Then, the rest are all luscious.. great for make out music, or to fall asleep to. Will send you to a nice, cozy dreamland. My sweet Norman and I often put on a Catie Curtis and snuggle up and drift off to la la land. Feeling secure, safe, and loved. nice feeling.

Haunting. That's it. Hauntingly beautiful. Indeed. Listen and you'll be hooked too.

5 out of 5 stars A triumph from Catie Curtis and her army of talent.......2005-01-25

Catie blew me away with this one and producer Trina Shoemaker (known best for her work with Sheryl Crow) left her signature as well. DIRL is well written and the perfomances are a force of nature. This album really demonstrates Catie's range of talent, with equal success in both the folk and pop tracks on this album. I highly recommend it.

I also recommend that listeners find out about a documentary produced during the recording of this album. The film, "Tangled Stories", is due out later this year: www.tangledstories.com

3 out of 5 stars GrownUpMusic.com Recommended!.......2004-12-09

Catie Curtis has one of those effortless-sounding voices that are so warm and conversational, like the sunny tomboy from next door with the winsome smile who never went anywhere without her guitar. On this release, her best since her debut CD "Truth From Lies," Catie covers a lot of familiar terroritory (love 'n stuff), but with a slightly-more-rockin' Sheryl Crow kind of edge. It works for her. Think Indigo Girls without all that pesky anger.

4 out of 5 stars honest.......2004-10-06

This is my first exposure to Catie Curtis. I very much like her straightforward honest songwriting and overall style. There isn't much pretension here which is refreshing. My favorite tracks are "Hold On", "It's The Way You Are" and "Cross Over To Me" which features some brilliant electric guitar. There are some weak tracks as well particularly "The Night" and "Dark Weather". All things considered, this album is not likely to change anyone's life but has definitely made me want to explore this artist more.

5 out of 5 stars Crash Course in Catie.......2004-05-21

I came late to the Catie Curtis party but apparently it's just getting started. Never heard of her until a few weeks ago. Saw her in concert. Acquired and devoured every CD of hers I could get. "Dreaming in Romance Languages" is the best of the bunch. The others are worth owning, don't get me wrong -- infectious and sometimes sweetly geeky. "Dreaming" is more literate, more nuanced. It's bittersweet melancholy you can hum. Money well spent.

Wow... find a way to give this album a spin to see if it sits well with you... it's like the fiercest of Ani's poems (the classic stuff from the 1990s albums) back to back with just the right amount of intermissions of jokes and good vibes...

On her 1995 debut, Curtis hints at the wise songwriting of her more mature work, even if she doesn't always seem sure of the way there. She stumbles a bit with forced images (the lover in "Crocodile Tears" threatens to gobble her up), awkward humor (in "Slave to My Belly" she converses with her tummy), and a few strained defenses of her sexuality. At the same time, Curtis offers what remains her finest song, "Troubled Mind," with its braided, fingerstyle guitar figures and simple, pure refrain: "I'm tired from all the weight / I'm tired of being strong / So won't you come and stay / And let me lay down in your arms." Curtis is often compared to Shawn Colvin, but Colvin hasn't written or sung this soulfully since her own debut. Guest spots from fellow New Englanders John Gorka (harmony) and Patty Larkin (guitar) complement Curtis's lucid, clean folk rock. --Roy Kasten

5 out of 5 stars My New Favorite.......2002-10-24

When I played "The Wolf," I realized what a wonderful songwriter this artist is; But it was listening to the rest of the CD that made me fall in love with Catie and her music. And darn, I've been missing it and her all this time. John Gorka backs her on "Troubled Mind", still my favorite song of longing: "I'm tired of being strong ... let me lay down in your arms." How often I've wanted the words for those feelings. Her music is always thoughtful, but the quality is light and some cuts are just downright fun.
Don't let the gay element scare you--love is just love after all, and all the lyrics can apply to any combination. I am working on getting all of Catie's CDs, and this one plays every day several times on my stereo. Go Catie!! [reminds me of Dar Williams' lyric "I have never had a way with women, but ... make me wish that I could"]

A friend of mine loaned me this CD...let's just say that I now own *all* of Catie Curtis' work. She is a remarkable songwriter who is still developing. This is her most raw, unpolished work, but i like it that way. "Troubled Mind" is one of the best ballads i've heard in a long time.

Crash Course in Roses is also a great album...

If you like folk / singer-songwriter acoustic music, you'll love all her work.

5 out of 5 stars I love this cd.......2001-01-14

I first heard this CD when a friend of mine wanted to play me the song "Radical." I loved the great melody, guitar playing, and beautiful lyrics. I went out and got the CD and out of my whole collection it is definitely it my top three most played CD's. Troubled Mind is a beautiful duet. I also love Slave to my Belly. The Cd is full of great songs and a real appreciation for life. I recommend this CD to anyone who is a fan of great female musicians.

4 out of 5 stars I'm a slave to my belly!.......2000-11-29

I first saw Catie Curtis a few weeks ago as the opening act to a Dar Williams concert. I am hooked. I have never enjoyed an opening act this much. I just got Truth From Lies because I love her song "Slave to My Belly" and found myself singing it on the way to work the next day. The first verse goes like this: "I'm a slave to my belly 'cause it got to be fed/Every morning, well it lifts me out of bed/ and says: 'Go to work for me baby./Buy me some bread and some wine.'/My belly doesn't like me to be playing guitar all the time/So I'm on the train all the way to town/I sell my day and ride away to town..." This song just makes me laugh because I am a slave to my belly, it wants to be fed, and that's why I'm on the train, going to work. The amazon.com review calls this awkward humor, but I think it's great. The entire CD hasn't stuck with me yet, though, hence 4 stars not 5.

Catie Curtis speaks to my soul. Her lyrics and music make her my favorite. She views the world as manageable. A true artist.

Boston folkie Catie Curtis is backed by an all-star roots-rock band (ex-Springsteen keyboardist Roy Bittan, ex-Mellencamp drummer Kenny Aronoff, ex-Gabriel bassist Tony Levin) on her album "Catie Curtis," and her songwriting has improved enough to live up to the challenge. Her lyrics boast a new level of sharply observed detail, and her verses build to truly memorable choruses. When she sings about an adolescent lesbian affair on "I Don't Cry Anymore," the specificity of lines such as "I kept your picture in my pocket though you were always with me" will connect with anyone's doomed teenage romance. Another song describes a fading New England mill town, but it transcends that cliché to evoke time passing inexorably like a "River Winding" through the darkness. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars If your a human being you'll love Catie Curtis!.......1999-06-23

I saw Catie Curtis because my friend Dwight reccomended it. Her lyrics are incredible. They drag forward all the thoughts we have, plus the relationship we wish we could find. "I don't need a hero, just somebody"...Somewdsy I hope to find a life partner that feels about me what Curtis has expressed in her songs. a great car CD. Thank you Dwight!

5 out of 5 stars Sung from the soul.......1999-05-10

I had the pleasure of seeing Catie Curtis open for Dan Fogleberg at Humphrey's in San Diego. It was my first exposure to her music and I was impressed with her talents from the first song she sang. There's a real depth and truth in her songs and voice. She was more than great, she was superb and I'm not sure why we don't hear more of her on the radio. This CD is my personal favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Even better than "Truth from Lies"...........1999-01-06

I honestly thought this release might disappoint because her first effort was so wonderful. I can only say I was wrong, this CD actually exceeds her fabulous rookie release, "Truth from Lies". Cuts 1-12 are all great, with "Falling Silent in the Dark", "I Don't Cry Anymore", "Heroes" and "Larry" being my personal favorites. If you like the Indigo Girls or Dar Williams and you've never heard of Catie, do yourself a favor and check her out...you will not be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars I thought this CD was very poetic.......1998-12-10

This CD's material was very thoughtful and intellectual while at the same time displaying hidden truths in our lives. I thought the recording was a little fuzzy, but the rest was great!

5 out of 5 stars Poignant, evocative lyrics brought to life by a great voice.......1998-11-20

This is one of my favorite albums, and is loved by all who have received it (boyfriend, parents, sisters, college roommates). Catie's wonderful voice and touching lyrics make this a "must buy" for any folk-oriented music lover. If you ever get a chance to see her live, its the icing on the cake.

5 out of 5 stars great FEELING music.......2005-10-31

when I put this CD on, I know I'm going to cry. it brings me memories and feelings that I don't know how to explain. it's not a sad album, I love it. I guess women just need to cry sometimes, maybe at *that* time of month, or for whatever reason...

the music is soulful, deep, soothing, erotic, comforting. like a good friend putting her arms around you and saying "I understand" and that's what makes me cry.

my dear sweet hubby, Norman, and I have made love to this CD countless times. brings out the passion in me (then I cry) kidding, I don't cry every time - but it puts me in a space that I feel so much. the pain of my friend's death, comes to mind first. the pain of the world, I dunno. have you ever just cried cause something is so beautiful? I have. but then I cry during the National Anthem, at a football game. sniff.. it touches me.

this was the first of Ms Curtis' CD that I listened to. got it by accident really, I only played it, cause it caught my eye. never heard of her. it was about to go into the Goodwill box, boy, glad I rescued it! now, I have most all of her CDs, but this was the first, so, like a girl's first lover, it will always hold a special place for me.

4 out of 5 stars Good Intro to Catie Curtis.......2005-06-11

This was a good album, but I didn't think it was as deep as some of her other work.

5 out of 5 stars Catie Curtis Will Stir You 'Soulfully'.......2001-04-17

Catie is one of the most talented singer-songwriters I have heard. With no major label backing, she's made more than a splash-- even past the waves of Lilith-- and has grown in artistry along the way. There's no comparing her to the usual female icons... she has a depth that far outreaches mainstream fluff. Each lyric pulls the listener in and reels emotions out of depths seldom seen. The melodies are equally stirring. Acoustic-based and full of centemplation, EVERY song is a winner on this disc. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars So Why Isn't Everyone Listening To Catie?.......2000-06-08

I first heard Catie Curtis at a music festival in Seattle a couple of years ago. I had no idea who she was, but my boyfriend and I were literally drawn in from the sidelines by her voice and melodies. It was a smallish show (especially compared to the many "bigger" or at least better known acts that were playing that day), and it was outside. As Catie played, the crowd, *literally*, grew bigger and bigger. People stopped what they were doing just to listen to her. She was fantastic. Highlights of her show and of her CD's are the track "Radical," and, "Falling Silent in the Dark," and the wonderful "Soulfully." The two of us were torn between what to buy. We knew we had to get one of her cds because her music was so soulful, so heartfelt, so magnetic, but we didn't know which ones to get. We compromised and got one each. I bought Truth From Lies, and he bought her self-titled, newer cd. I actually think I prefer the self-titled, because it has my favorite tracks, "Soulfully" and "Falling...". "River Winding" is also a great song. For some reason (probably because that's when we got her cds), these songs always remind me of autumn: falling leaves, rain, the smell of smoke, being warm, inside and being alive.

From the first few strummings of the guitar on the cd, Catie takes over. She's on, and that's that. She sets a mood all her own. Cozy, introspective, alive, and contemplative. Smart, a little jaded, and taking everything in. And her music is how she lets it all out, cleverly re-worked into an art form she can share.

The lyrics in "Soulfully" just rock my world. For example, how can you beat, "Last night you found my house and rang the bell for me/ I didn't know you very well, I didn't know what it would be/ But I felt so close to you in so little time/ Amd when you said goodnight I spilled my glass of wine." I smile every time I hear that. Who doesn't want to pop in a cd and think about those first tender moments of infatuation?

I'm truly surprised she hasn't had more exposure. I think people (well, people besides you) are missing out. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars One for the Moody Ages.......2000-02-19

Catie Curtis must be one of the most underrated recording musicians of the 90s. You find her albums not by splashy promotions or ads, but by word of mouth. And when you listen to her albums you realize why; no ad-smith can accurately convey the intense emotion her songs create, at least not any betteer than a close friend, or long-lost lover. This album follows the darker veins of her first outing. Each song conveys a sense of love lost, contemplation, nostalgia. If you need something playing in the background to spice up that evening when you're trying to figure out what to do now that all love is gone, get this collection of songs. Then, a glass of wine, a rainy evening and a couple boxes of Kleenex ought to complete the package. You will not be disappointed.

It is wonderful and just very good; quality music at it's best

5 out of 5 stars one of the best CDs I own.......1999-03-20

I love this CD. I can listen to it in any mood because it is the perfect mix of upbeat and soft, sad songs. "The Christians and the Pagans" offers an unusual, much-needed social message, but none of the songs are preachy; some stand out less than others, but there are no poorly sung songs on this album. "I Always Told You the Truth" and "75 Septembers" are two of the best; my favorite song is "Solitary Hero." This CD is a definite must-buy.
