For those late to the Soul Asylum party, which began in 1981 on cozy Minneapolis stages as Loud Fast Rules, the "Best-Live-Band-in-the-Country" badge pinned on them by countless longtime fans from David Letterman to George Wendt may seem like an exaggerated yarn. After the Flood finds the foursome at the pinnacle of their runaway-train popularity, a potent, airtight foursome living up to its reputation on a Saturday night at an airplane hangar in North Dakota, circa 1997, playing for high schoolers in a northern town ravaged by floods that summer. The applause meter on "hits" like "Black Gold," "Misery" and "Runaway Train" proves that most of the audience hopped aboard during 1993's Gravedancer's Union. And while the band fails (purposely neglects?) to sample from its essential punk rock back pages--Made to Be Broken or While You Were Out--it manages to revive those legendary stage chops on a half-dozen covers, including a metalish jaunt through Alice Cooper's "School's Out," a straight shot of Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now," a flannel-soul edition of Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" and LuLu's "To Sir With Love," on which chameleon vocalist Dave Pirner wails with grace. -- Scott Holter

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good album, great memories.......2005-03-25

I thought this was a great album as well, mostly because I was there was well. I not only attended the prom the two previous years, but also went to this prom a year after I graduated (I subsequently went to two more proms after that) and this music brings back good memories.

Normally I listen hip-hop when I drive my civic around town, but I give this album a thumbs up.

5 out of 5 stars Great Live CD - Great Cover Choices.......2005-02-26

This band is a phenomenal live band and this CD features them playing a great set list at the peak of their popularity. While their most memorable hits are here, what really makes this set list great is the cover tunes that they chose to play. The extraordinary Alice Cooper rock anthem 'School's Out' kicks the CD off. 'I Can See Clearly Now' is very appropriate given that they were playing a post flood prom. 'To Sir With Love' is awesome. 'I Know' is really fun to listen to. Even 'Rhinestone Cowboy' is given the royal rock treatment and becomes a sing along favorite. I gotta believe that this track was added for the cheesiness factor, but it's done very well.

The only negative to this CD is that Dave Pirner's voice sounds off at times during Misery. But I didn't mind that so much because it only adds to the credibility of this being a true live CD and not an over produced piece trying to pass for a live CD.

I've seen Soul Asylum live multiple times. They are an incredible live band. It's great to be able to be able to bring that energy home or in the car via this CD. I'm impatiently awaiting their next studio album. (Soul Asylum, if you are reading this, I'd love to hear you guys cover Shawn Cassidy's `That's Rock & Roll' for the cheesiness factor. I think you could make it rock) This is an excellent buy. Do yourselves a favor and buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-02-18

One of the best live albums I have ever picked up. Thanks Sony, thanks Soul Asylum. This needed to get out!

5 out of 5 stars I was there..........2005-01-28

Wow, I can't believe this got released! I was at the hanger for the Prom that night... the only High School dance I ever attended. I can tell you first hand that the atmosphere in the town at the time was pretty depressing. Most everyone I knew had lost pretty much everything they owned; houses, vehicles and almost everything else was fair game for the raging Red River that spring.

Our graduating High School class had spent the weeks leading up to the eventual evacuation sandbagging the dikes around the river, trying (in vain it turned out) to keep the flooding river out of our homes and lives.

Many families didn't realize the severity of the situation until the National Guardsmen came to our doors and told us to "pack for about 3 days, you need to be gone in 2 hours". That 3 days turned into upwards of 2 months for many of us. Friends were seperated with no way to get back in touch with one another and not knowing who was going to make it back for graduation... or even if we were going to have one.

When they announced that we would be still having a graduation and would even still hold the Prom, we were ecstatic. It was a much needed break from all the rebuilding that was going on. Even more exciting; somehow, someway, someone had managed to get Soul Asylum to agree to play our Prom!

When Soul Asylum took the stage, the energy in the hanger was palpable... you could almost taste excitement in the air. They didn't just *play* for us though, they got up there and poured their hearts into making the best of a bad situation for us and for that, I will be forever grateful. It was a stellar show and made for some pretty interesting stories when we started returning tuxedo's with tore-off sleeves and jackets that got ripped while crowd surfing.

Thanks again gentleman for giving yourselves to a town that needed a little pick me up, it was a much needed boost and it's not something that we'll soon forget!

5 out of 5 stars Great music recorded live...doesn't get any better than this.......2005-01-26

I have several live Soul Asylum albums...this one takes the cake. I've seen them live in person before, but I can only imagine what this one felt like to be there. They are indeed the best live band you could see live. You can tell that Soul Asylum poured their hearts and souls into this performance. A forgettable tragedy turns into an unforgettable night that student will always remember and fans can listen in on again and again. You will not regret it.

    4 out of 5 stars Oops - Wrong Album.......2000-08-02

I wrote the review below believing this page referred to After the Flood, vol. 1, which I suspect is no longer in print.

Volume Two is, I believe, composed and performed by many of the same performers (notably absent and lamented is Sage's Marc Olsen). Two discs, one more song-oriented, another more ethereal and ambient, comprise the set, which includes several loose-leaf art pieces. The packaging is somewhat irritating, but that's a small complaint compared with the praise I have to give the music. While Volume One had a basement tapes feel to it, this has a stronger studio/producer presence, though the sense of listening in on someone's private despairs and elations still holds.

4 out of 5 stars Bridging the bluegrass divide........2005-07-07

Following a Celtic rhythmic inclination that adapts synthesizers and contemporary Appalachian vocals, The Clumsy Lovers provide a driving Rock & Roll bass track and intertwining bluegrass melodies. Electric guitar and violin chase each other for the lead parts on "Amen" & "After The Flood", as many traditional melodies are incorporated over new lyrics and vocals that reflect modern-day speech inflections. If you like Scruggs-style banjo, then this record is recommended for the incorporation of it into most tracks. Eastern melodies are flirted with, and the five-string takes care of the modal rolls. These guys are country, and they know it. You can hear South Carolina all over this record, and probably bet your last dollar that these folks have the potential to be a gateway for the older music into traditional pop circles. [...]

5 out of 5 stars frenetic, eclectic, and fresh..........2005-06-27

Only a band with great players in it could marry stylistic influences so diverse, and pull it off flawlessly. "After the Flood" is a heady brew that will definitely give you a buzz of happiness.

From the first song, you will know that you are in for something different. "(A)Better Me" introduces a sound that melds 90's alternative pop with American bluegrass and Celtic reels and jigs reminiscent of Fairport Convention.

The surprises don't stop there. This band can range through Latin and Reggae rhythms---sometimes in the same song. They can call forth everyone from "Dexy's Midnight Runners" to Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks. The lyrics are clever, and the bass and drums kick butt, sometimes sounding amazingly like Fairport Convention's Dave Pegg and Dave Mattacks.

A word to the wise: Bluegrass purists Beware! This is not an album of Beverly Hillbillies' style breakdowns. But this band DOES feature a monstrously talented banjo player, and the music takes a lot of risks. The result is infectiously happy music, and the band sounds like it's enjoying itself enormously.

CATCH THIS BAND IF IT'S IN YOUR VICINITY! They can play rings around other Celtic-influenced bands like the Decemberists. They just haven't gotten the hype, yet. Listen to them, and you'll want to pass the word to others.

4 out of 5 stars No Pigeonholing Here.......2005-02-23

Put this in your blender and shake it up -- uptempo bluegrass, Celtic fiddles and mandolins, accordions, consistently good writing, a little seduction, and a good measure of Christian imagery (the latter two actually get combined at least once in one of the best cuts, Mercy), even a little shot of ska. The result is After the Flood, over fifty minutes of music impossible to sit still to. 15 songs, three instrumentals, one of which -- Groove Set -- combines three traditional songs and flows without a pause out of the preceding cut, Everything's Okay. The Flood suite covers four or five cuts in the middle of the CD, but my highlights lie around it -- Better Me, Mercy, Miss You Much, Scarce, and Rest.

Like me, you may not have heard of The Clumsy Lovers, but take the plunge into After the Flood. The rewards are instant and constant.

      5 out of 5 stars Celtic bluegrass.......2004-09-28

This is a great CD for bluegrass lovers and celtic music lovers! Absolutely high energy excellent musicianship and a great attitude! I would absolutely love to see these folks perform live! If you are looking for something uplifting this will have you dancing in no time!

      Don't Canadian musicians rock?!!

      5 out of 5 stars Clumsy Blues.......2004-07-03

What do you get when you take a basic bluegrass sound, throw in every other form of music thatcan support a mandolin and fiddle, sculpt it with a strong young songwriter, and season it with several years of indie releases and long tours before putting it on major-label disc for the first time? You get this CD.

The sticker on the shrink-wrap calls it a fusion of Bluegrass and Celtic music. That's part of it. You can also hear the influence of gospel, Gypsy, country, blues, and rock on several tracks. Traditional instrumentals and adaptations punctuate sharp songs like "Mercy," "Scarce," and "Everything's Okay." The mini-opera that runs from "House and Home" through to "Waterbound" is witty and well-constructed. This is a CD to play often.

There are hints that the band's main songwriter, Chris Jonat, may have competition in the near future from bandmates Trevor Rogers and Andrea Lewis. If that's the case, we may live to see even more mature, sophisticated work from this band. Even if that isn't the case, this is one of the bast major-label CDs to come down the pike in a decade.
