About the Artist
Holcombe Waller is an independent artist living in San Francisco, California though by the time you read this he may be in Portland, New York, the Netherlands, or who knows where, following his muse. He's just sold all his possessions and is making a go at it. This is his story.

The first thing to note about Holcombe is his unearthly voice. In the 70s you would have compared him to Van Morrision, in the 90s to Jeff Buckley. These days the hip reference is probably Damien Rice or another SF native, Devendra Banhart, but let's just agree that he is touched.

Mark Mardon of Bay Area Reporter writes: "[Holcombe] sings in his gorgeous, hauntingly plaintive voice, and plays bass, piano, drum machine, Wurlitzer, percussion, adn some guitar. Adding to the instrumentation is Ben Landsverk, who plays most of the guitar parts and all the banjo licks. TROUBLED TIMES showcases a great young singer/songwriter... Holcombe uses vocals as deftly as any instrument, showing the marks of a classically trained musician. 'Literally the End of the World' is a wail, a cry, a plea, a confession: 'Put newspaper stacks wrapped on the curb as my offering, and shared the peace." (June 24, 2004)

5 out of 5 stars Great Traditional Bluegrass.......2007-02-26

This is a good traditional bluegrass band. I heard one of their earlier CD's and loved it. Recently, I got the opportunity to see them in person. They are all good musicians and good singers. It was a real treat to see them in person, and I will be checking their schedule to see when they are in the area again. This CD has some really good numbers on it and to see them perform them in person was definitely a treat!

1 out of 5 stars What the hell is this?.......2007-02-17

I'm a country music fan but what the hell is this album? It sounds like hillbilly arkansas rednecks singing a bunch of God knows what! For crying out loud...this isn't "country" music Nashville style, this is country music Bumpkin style. I didn't like this album (total let down). Us Mama's Family fans know what Country Music is supposed to sound like...and this isn't it. I don't know how the hell they even had the nerve to sell such a junky album. Save your money and buy Lynn Anderson, Dolly Parton, Kellie Pickler or Miss Carrie Underwood. I'm a Redneck (from TN) and even I don't like this album. Ya'll please feel free to express your feelings...but don't criticize other people's opinions.

    5 out of 5 stars A Must Have!.......2007-02-14

This is far and away the best bluegrass group I've ever heard! Even if you're not heavily into bluegrass, this one will win you over! These men are truly masters of their field and bring an energy and soul to their art that I haven't heard elsewhere. Troubled Times is outstanding! I can't say enough, this CD is a pleasure to own and is a must have!

5 out of 5 stars This band's tap root into tradition is deep.......2006-12-15

Playing Time - 41:29 -- Booming Ballistic Bamagrass from Cullman, Alabama could be the bumpersticker on David Davis' bus. This band knows how to lay it down right, and their tap root into tradition is deep. Davis' father and grandfather were both musicians. In 1938, his Uncle Cleo (then an Atlanta ice truck driver) answered a newspaper ad in need of a guitar picker and singer of old-time songs. Thus, he became Bill Monroe's first Blue Grass Boys. Although David's father lost a hand in World War II, the family's strong commitment and loyalty to the music never faltered. With this kind of pedigree, you can almost see the bluegrass flowing in his blood. You can certainly hear it on this album.

Gary Thurmond originally formed The Warrior River Boys in the mid-1950s but health problems resulted in his turning the band over to then 23-year-old David Davis in 1984. The visionary frontman plays mandolin and sings lead. Album releases (on the Rounder label) in 1990 and 1994 were the precursors to his current affiliation with the other biggie in bluegrass, Rebel Records. "Troubled Times" follows his near-perfect 2004 album that introduced fiddler Owen Sanders (formerly with Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver) as one of the Warrior River Boys. Bassist Marty Hays has also been in the group for several years. Since their 2004 release, Josh Smith (banjo) and Jeff Griffy (guitar) have moved on to other endeavors, with the current band configuration including Daniel Grindstaff (banjo) and Adam Duke (guitar). The band shines on Davis' original instrumental "Evening Prayer Blues."

A common complaint of mine is that CD jackets are often no longer providing any more than song and musician credits, and perhaps a few thank you's. Although lyrics would be nice too, could we please just get a page of the CD jackets dedicated to some narrative about the band, its members, and some background about the songs and their inspiration? For example, wouldn't it have been nice to know that "Filling the River with Tears" was written by the same Randall Franks, an actor who played Officer Randy Goode on TV's "In the Heat of the Night." It took research to determine that the song is inspired by a poem written by Evelyn Rose Brock. Davis found it to be a great piece of very well written music, with all the necessary ingredients that he looks for -- interesting story, opportunity for good harmonies within the melody, and a bluesy feel.

Personal misfortune disturbance or distress are common topics in the songs on "Troubled Times," with songwriter Alan Johnston providing three troublous tales -- "Ballad of Sarah Malone," "The River Ran Black," and "Muddy Water." Ballads about people and their trials work well in bluegrass. Damon Black's "Jake Satterfield" and Merle Travis' "John Henry Jr." are examples. David Davis delves into the roots of old-time and classic country music, and he has an affinity for Hank Williams' lonesome songs with two bluegrass covers on this project. Covering a Charlie Poole song, "Milwaukee Blues," was the perfect choice to integrate Depression-era hard times into the repertoire. While Hank's tend to be overdone, I'd enjoy hearing more of Poole's material revitalized today. Chronicling a Civil War tale, "Chancellorsville" relates the heroism of Stonewall Jackson but his downfall due to friendly fire of a Confederate bullet. Enhanced with mournful wail of the fiddle, the lamentation and grief of that one bullet cutting down the south is evident. Troubled times, indeed! And this band's bluesy bluegrass with their instruments and vocals are perfect for relating these stories from history to get us prepared, ready, and self-reliant for more troubled times ahead on life's crooked road. 5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2005-11-27

I first heard this recording of the Grechaninov Creed on the BBC and I just had to buy it and although I have played it many times I still find it stunning. I have come to love most of the disc and if you enjoy liturgical music a capella you will surely enjoy this.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music.......2005-08-12

Ikon is perhaps the best acapella CD of Russian music I have purchased. I had looked for years trying to find a certain song; and when I found it on this cd I bought it solely for that song. What a suprise to hear the rest. I listen to it at least once a day. A must Buy!

5 out of 5 stars English Choir Come Close to Authentic Russian.......2003-04-05

My wife is from Russia & when we first played this CD, we thought the Choir was from Russia. No, its the Holst Singers, a group from England. How did they do it? I always like James Bowman as a counter tenor, but the Angelic Soprano is the highlight on this CD, even the bass singers sound like Russian deacons chanting biblical verses or praises to God through the Holy Doors. Most of the musical sections are classic Russian choir songs from the liturgy, but the "Four Choruses From Songs Of Troubled Times" is rather folk to maybe pagan in origin. The last 3 sections are from modern composers that fit well with the older material. We listen this CD all the time, specially before church, or during Holy Days, & believe me; the Orthodox church has a lot of Holidays :)

5 out of 5 stars Great Russian music and more.......2000-05-06

If I can say one thing about Stephen Layton's Holst Singers, it's that they know how to interpret Russian music. However, the standout on this CD is one of only three songs by non-Russian composers. This particular piece is Norwegian composer Knut Nystedt's "Immortal Bach." If you like Nystedt at all, you should by this CD. "Immortal Bach" is Nystedt at his best. Other than this piece, the CD isn't spectacular. It's just good Russian music. James Bowman's countertenor voice is hard to get used to and sometimes he is a bit flat. However, the entire CD is worth "Immortal Bach." I had to wait a very long time to receive this CD, but it was well worth the wait because of the Nystedt piece.

Holcombe Waller's a musical genius. This is the album I go to when I want to tear my hair out thinking about the war or the current administration's latest follies. His gorgeous voice, mixed with brilliant lyrics, make this a standout record that everyone should have in their collection.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply fantastic..........2007-05-31

This is one of my all time favorite cds. Holcombe Waller's combination of his beautiful voice and appropriately current lyrics make this a disk that I have played over and over again - in fact, since I got it, I haven't taken it out of my car disk player. The songs are diverse and match any mood, and his voice is addicting and transforming. Everyone who jumps in my car always asks me who is playing - he seems to appeal to all ages and types. I can't wait for more!

    2 out of 5 stars Quite Disappointing.......2007-03-24

Holcombe Waller has a pretty voice, it's true. But he makes terrible use of that pretty voice. For a particularly egregious example, listen to track 7 ("You Love Me") which, much like track 4, is sugary pop dressed up as indie, alternative whatever. Newsflash: sugary melodies are sugary melodies whether they're about love or Condeleeza Rice, of all people.

If he hired a decent producer instead of producing it himself, and if he collaborated with someone who knows how to write compelling music Holcombe Waller could really be something....

5 out of 5 stars Another Winner from Holcombe Waller.......2004-11-30

Yes, I'm a bit biased. Though I'm not his mum, I've been listening to him from the time he was in college to just about five minutes ago.

I'll leave it short and sweet. His lyrics are provocative, his voice is entrancing and his CD is a MUST. (I suggest both Advertising Space and Extravagant Gestutre to really chart the his progression.)

Holcombe Waller is one of the most talented singers I have ever come across in terms of his range, his expression and his style. There is a sense of whimsy and craft in all of his music, a great counter to some of the more serious subjects of the songs.

Holcombe Waller is a talented composer. For someone who writes and arranges music (his own as well as others) he is able to intricately intertwine melody and harmony. He makes bold choices and weaves complicated layers.

And well, he's just a really nice guy. Can't beat that.

Since Quite Sane is out of London and this is their first real release, most Americans (like me up until recently) probably haven't had a chance to hear their stuff. But, I was fortunate enough to be BLOWN AWAY by their 90's hit "This Won't Work" on a jazz station not too long ago and had been aching for a fix from them ever since. Thankfully, their debut is here and it is one of the most flavorful and charismatic blends of avant garde jazz, funk and hiphop i've heard. It satisfied my hunger for a fresh sound manifold and now i am a QS fiend for life. Oh well, poor me.

3 out of 5 stars Derogatory Terms in the First review.......2004-06-19

Wow, you'd think Maazon.com might have screened that review a little before allowing it to be posted. Didn't someone recently in the sports world say that term and have to apologize to all of japan for that? Using the term "Jap" is unacceptable. If the cd is a Japanese import, say so. It has not been an acceptable term and so should not be used in this matter.
back to the cd-single, pretty good, but the b-sides are not worth the purchase of this cd. Their earlier singles , especially from the first album have far better b-sides.

5 out of 5 stars Should've been on the radio!.......2001-11-10

This was the Fountains' best shot at the radio for sure. Shame the red tape held it up. The public would've been pleased. The most perfect heartfelt tune I've ever heard. Put on repeat forever and enjoy! Great job boys. Looking forward to the new record.

      5 out of 5 stars FOW's sleeper smash hit.......2001-06-21

this is one of the best songs ever, i cant believe it wasnt played on the radio. FOW is one of the best bands, mixing the likeness of beach-brit pop with an Emo-Indy sound, but not too produced to be soldout. Everyone should like the FOW!

5 out of 5 stars Proves the radio doesn't play the best music.......2000-12-13

The fact that Troubled Times was not a radio hit baffles me and confirms that image is everything -- it's not about the music. As far as the B-sides go: "These Days" complements "Troubled Times" well as both show the more sensitive side of this versatile band. These two could be put on any seduction / relaxation mix that you want to put together. The other B-side is good but not their best work.

3 out of 5 stars As far as bands go. . ........2000-12-06

Fountains of Wayne is one of the best out there today. As far as this single goes, though, you don't get your money's worth. Like any good fan, you purchase singles for the B-sides, right? Well this one really only offers one original FOW B-side and a Jackson Browne cover. Don't get me wrong, I love Jackson Browne-which is why I would rather listen to his rendition of "These Days" than FOW's- which sounds almost exactly the same. Surprisingly, FOW didn't add any of their usual flair to the Browne undertaking. "You're Just Never Satisfied" is the original FOW single that this CD offer, and it's a quality B-side, but not one of the best. You're better off purchasing the Japanese Import EP for this single, rather than this version. The Jap version has more tracks, including the ones of this single, and far better B-sides. It's more money, but it's worth it. "I'll Do the Driving" (a B-side included on the Jap version) is a song not to be missed.

I can't "review" of this project because I am involved in its creation, but I'd like to offer a clarification: This is not just an "audio CD" as indicated here on Amazon.com. There are, in fact, two disks in the package -- a CD with 14 songs PLUS a DVD with two films -- one is an 80-minute documentary about James Reams & The Barnstormers (including lots of concert footage) and the other is a 20-minute preview of a documentary James Reams and Dave Fasano are working on called "Pioneers of Bluegrass Music" in which they interview some of the first-generation of bluegrass musicians, including Jimmy Martin, J.D. Crow, Curly Seckler and many more. The full-length "Pioneers" documentary is still being filmed and will be released in 2007 or 2008.

Heart of Peace: Music and Meditation is a soulful collection of inspiration and meditation. The sparkling piano pieces of Stefan Scaggiari, the sweet vocals of Megon McDonough, the powerful voice of Tony Spencer, the heartfelt ruminations of Abbie Palmer, and the energizing meditations of Rev. Judith Ballard combine to create a balm for troubled times and an inspiration for peaceful times.
