This 1992 effort, Phish's third overall and first for Elektra, represents the peak of their early-period studio records. The full scope of the quartet's artistic vision comes through clearly across a selection of their most enduring songs. They reveal a voracious and sweeping appetite for a large assortment of styles: psychedelic roots rock; heavy, fusion-leaning progressive rock; bluegrass; straight jazz; and even salsa all creep in. The constant and frantic battle between wild imagination, oddball humor, and keen musical chops is mighty compelling, and even their most grandiose, over-the-top, jet-fueled jams are delivered with a disarming wink. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
Those were the days, huh? .......2007-04-18
One of Phish's most critically acclaimed albums may not have been their greatest, but proceeded to incorporate more elements into one wildly fun whole, definitely some sort of early year triumph in regards to that incredible high-wire act between pop and progressive tendencies they struggled with forever. Here, the 16 tracks blaze along into a convincing whole with ease. Whatever any melodic excess their instrumental, scale-bustin' ways starts to grate on traditionalists, a huge display of seamless synergistic prowess in multiple genres offsets the intellectual jamming , which I usually love more then anything else to begin with due to the musically enlightened pedigree this supreme unit doth brought to the rock set. A far cry from their stellar, massively extended live adaptations any fan has come to let overshadow their original studio incarnations, enjoy this sweet album of nectar on it's own merit to find one of the more intelligently hip rock experiences of the early 90's which for the most part holds up quite fine indeed.
Not thiet best studio album.......2006-05-06
A BUNCH OF SILLY INCONSEQUENTIAL STUFF.
ALL THE BEST SONGS ARE DONE MUCH BETTER ON THE LIVE ALBUMS.
This is Phish's second official, major release studio album (it is thier third, if you count Junta, which was originally only sold at concerts on a cassette tape). It is 60 minutes long, and the sound quality is very good but not excellent.
There are 16 tracks on this disc. But, only 5 of them have any meat to them. The rest is just silly filler in between the real songs.
Phish plays these 5 songs in concert all of the time. They are on many of the Phish live albums. Sometimes, Phish stretches out the songs, and other times they don't. But, all of the live versions I have heard are better than these studio versions.
The album starts out really strong with Llama. Other good tracks are Tweezer and Chalk Dust Torture. Cavern is a good song, but this one is especially so much better done live.
The other tracks are a mixutre of styles. There is a Calypso track, a Latin-rock track and some soft jazz. There is nothing wrong with experimenting with different styles. Many groups have done it successfully all on one album, like Derek Trucks on Make A Joyful Noise, or Frank Zappa on Chunga's Revenge. But, Phish's attempts at all of these styles is rather weak and not very interesting. It reminds me of Pat Boone trying to do rock and roll.
I prefer Phish's later studio albums. I think they just got better as their sound matured. But, I also like the earlier work on Junta and Lawn Boy.
I think that this CD suffers somewhat from the "American Beauty" effect. As with every jam band, Phish's first 2 studio albums, Junta and Lawn Boy were more along the lines of their live shows. Eventually, every Jam band wants to make an American Beauty, the Grateful Dead's first traditional studio album that emphasizes the songs and not the music. I think with most bands it is forced, while for the Dead it was a natural progression. String Cheese Incident just went throught this with the horrible One Step Closer.
Listen up.......2006-03-14
I have been a huge Phish fan for years now, and in my time listening to them I have always heard about people loving this ablum. This album includes big hits like tweezer, chalk dust torture, etc- and the fact is that it was an average album for phish. In mine and a lot of other peoples opinions- live phish is the way to go; but if your talking studio.. this album was average. I think the highlight songs were: tweezer, llama, chalkdust, guelah papyrus, and stash. I recommend most phish albums in front of this one.
Smegma Dogmatagram Fishmarket Stew.......2005-12-02
This is Phish at their best. This is the album that made me a fan. And when I saw them live for the first time, they came out and opened with an instrumental, The Landlady, off Picture O' Nectar, and it was great. They came out and just played, no cutesy-ness, no geeky, absurd, pseudo-momentous lyrics. I always wondered why they couldn't do that more often. When they appeared on the David Letterman show or Saturday Night Live, why not just come out and do a tight instrumental? I think I know why. Because they have to be cool and pick songs that show off that they don't care what the larger public thinks, "we're just playing what we like for ourselves, man." But they should show a little more respect for their fans, some of who, like myself, have attempted to turn other people on to the scene only to be embarrassed by their lame recitals when on the national stage.
Anyway, that first paragraph sounds awfully resentful, I'm off to a bitter start but I'm really trying to say that this is a great album. Of all their studio albums, Picture of Nectar has the highest ratio of cool songs to filler. Songs such as Llama, Cavern, Stash, Landlady, Guelah Papyrus, Chalk Dust Torture, and maybe Tweezer all rank as some of the best studio Phish. As a band, they don't quite live up to the hype and expectations of the hard-core fans. But as musicians, when they had time to write and create together, when they were focused on jamming and musicality over the bombastic flamboyance of their live shows, they were often great. One can make a case for Lawn Boy, which comes in a close second for me, but overall I would say this is the one album to own if you want to appreciate Phish for their songwriting and musicianship.
Phish Rules!!!!!.......2005-11-29
Phish is known primarily as a live band, but this CD shows that they know how to make awesome studio albums to. The album opens with an awesome song: llamas. The song opens with some awesome drumming and then Trey comes in on guitar and Page on the keyboards. Cavern is another great tune. The song Guelah Papyrus has awesome jazzy keyboard jams. Chalk Dust Torture showcases awesome hard rock, with Trey Anastasio's guitar and Mike Gordon's bass taking center stage. Overall the album has influences of everything imaginable. Jazz, funk, latin, and rock are the most prevalent, but the song Poor Heart is really a country song. The lyrics on Picture of Nectar are whimsical, the instrumentals are brilliant, the jams are exciting, the compositions superb. What more could you want? I would reccomend this CD to anyone who likes good music!

Spectacular!!! Highly recommended it's an awesome band and this is one of their great cd's.
Music's Nectar.......2005-01-03
Los Enanitos Verdes are one of the greatest Argentineans bands ever, I mean, I just can't help feeling alive when I hear one of Felipe Staiti's solos, he's the one of the greatest guitarrists I ever heard. Well, the CD is different this time, it's not all rock & roll now, there are ballads: Luz de Dia, Futuro Mejor, Rebeca, and Piel. The rest of the songs are rock with some interesting fusions: Cordillera is one of my favorites, specially during the solo where Staiti uses the tapping tecnique to make it sound kick-ass, Hombre Vegetal got a funky feeling and it sounds even better when the brass comes in, Tequila's got a jazz touch and Mal de Amores reminds me how much I want to visit Spain. Ay Dolores, like I've said before in other reviews sounds tight 'cause not everyday we get to hear Agentineans playing mexican music. La Banda de la Esquina is the only song in the cd with pure rock & roll and is also my personal favorite in the album. Anyways, it's a great CD but it lacks the heavy rock taste like in previous productions, Big Bang, Guerra Gaucha, Planetario, etc. but it doesn't change the fact that is a great album. Buy it today, good luck finding.
2-8 rule.......2004-06-11
This cd is great played #2 through #8. It is wonderful, and those 7 songs have the right flow from one song to the next. Enanitos have a great sound. This is their second best album just under the newest one.
ENJOY!

Honeyed harmonies.......2003-08-02
This CD displays the lushness of feminine Slavic harmony. It is soothing, hypnotic and sometimes challenging with its occasional whoops and hollers. the liner notes give a nice summary of the songs; would be nice to read the actual lyrics, though.
It's refreshing to know that singers in America can produce these sounds. Keep it up, Kitka!
voices of angels.......2002-06-06
If I could make a wish and have any person or group of persons materialize at my bedside and sing me to sleep, it would be Kitka. Their music is so beautiful that there are no words. It is only to be experienced. So get it for yourself. Let this astounding music wash over you.
It truly takes my breath away..........2002-01-30
...every time I listen to it, and I try not to say cheezy-sounding things like that too often. I don't know how to put my love for these songs into words. It's like... oh, how do I describe this? Pure, beautiful, skin-tingling passion. My words are inadequate, but it's as close as I can get to what I'd like to say.
Wow !.......2001-11-14
I, too, heard Kitka perform on Prairie Home Companion, while driving alone in my car. When they finished, I audibly (and loudly) exclaimed, "Wow!" ... this coming from a mid-40's male rock-n-roller! The minute I walked in my front door, I ordered this CD. Addictive melodies, tight, soaring harmonies ... what a beautiful, moving experience.
Great music for any music lover.......2000-07-13
After hearing Kitka on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion a while back, I couldn't resist the urge to buy this CD. Kitka's music talents are truly amazing -- they are able to bring life to music that has been distant from our ears for many generations. After hearing Kitka sing their eastern European specialities, I can only wonder why we haven't enjoyed music from that tradition before now, as it is truly phenomenal. Kitka's performance, always flawless, opens this somewhat rare genre to the "Western" ear in an extremely pleasant and enjoyable way.

A voice teacher early music fan.......2005-12-21
Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707) was one of the three major North German composers of his era. He was also one of the most prolific composers of his time, his scope including liturgical music, cantatas and oratorical works for services and concerts, solos arias and cantatas, organ preludes, fugues, toccatas, chorale variations and fantasias , and chamber music including nineteen keyboard suites. Moreover, judging from features common in both, Buxtehude's cantata 'Jesu, meine Freude' may well have served as Bach's model for his five-part motet on the same chorale (BWV227). Though it is arguable that Buxtehude was Bach's greatest precursor, it would be foolish to think of his vast output merely as a preparation for Bach. Buxtehude's music deserves to stand at the summit of his age in its own right.
Although Buxtehude was primarily an organist, he was required as part of his church jobs to not only direct the choir occasonally but also to write some choral selections. Most of these comprised small-scale pieces such as those recorded here. It is quite possible that these pieces may have been performed during services by a chamber ensemble located in the organ loft. The prefered musical genre for private devotion at these small-scale gatherings was the strophic aria for solo voice and continuo. I found them to be very attractive and certainly well sung by the soloists, all of whom are excellent singers and obviously very skilled in the Early Music area. And, of course, the Purcell Quartet is unmatched in their ability to weave in and out of the vocal line in an exemplary fashion! I especially liked the first cantata:"Das neugebor'ne Kindelein" (Newborn today this little child) which features all 4 soloists:Kirby(sop)-Chance(countertenor)-Daniels(tenor) and Harvey(bass). And also the final cantata"Jesu dulcis memoria" (the thought of Jesus, sweet and kind) which features Chance and Harvey. It's all great music and played marvelously!!!!

Great Music - Beware - Copy Protected Disc!!!.......2006-06-19
Kala Ramnath delivers, as always, stellar and flawless playing with deep, emotional maturity. Vijay Ghate's playing is crisp and tight. Excellent sonic production values throughout. The big problem here and reason for the low star rating (which pains me greatly - it would easily garner 5 stars) is the annoying copy protection software embedded on the disc. I bought the disc, can't I manipulate the data to suit my personal needs? I'm not interested in selling it to anyone! I'll spare you the rant on copy protection. Just be forwarned that this disc is in my opinion, greatly compromised by the copy protection.

Without History..........2004-05-26
Unlike other reviewers here, I came to Nectar as my first Brooks Williams CD (following the use of a track at the end of a TV series was following). It stunned me. The warmth of the instrumentation & the voice. The playful, intricate lyrics and the outsanding guitar work. It's a sublime album that I can put on anytime and while away 40 minutes in the blink of an eye. I'm now on a mission to acquire some other Williams recordings. Hope I won't be shocked or disappointed. Buy this record!
A brilliant guitarist but . . ........2004-04-29
. . . as another reviewer mentioned above, this recording is a disappointment. I purchased this CD when I saw him live and was pretty excited to listen to his newest recording considering he's a very talented musician. Little Lion is a super instrumental album and I hope he does more like that!
A long-time fan, and I love it.......2003-12-20
I saw Brooks in concert not too long ago, for about the 5th time, and he mentioned that he's gotten hate-mail from people about this album. It's definitely a departure, but I love it. I've kept it in my car for weeks at a time, and I mean listening to it twice a day.
Brooks is paying tribute to his extremely rich set of influences on this album. He admires the music from when pop used to be a GOOD word, instead of evoking images of mostly naked teenagers dancing with large snakes.
Sonically, this album is fat and sassy. In contrast to the spare production of his other albums, which were largely Brooks's work, he's gotten a great producer to work with him on this one. The album is impeccably consistent from start to end, and I think Brooks was really happy with the process. He said "I was so tired of working so hard on recording the albums, I just wanted to hand over the reins and see what happened while I enjoyed playing music instead of nitpicking details." That's a semi-quote. In any case, the new producer really brought a lot to it -- I daresay he enjoyed having the free rein as much as Brooks enjoyed letting it go. The songs are pretty densely arranged as a result, with (gasp!) electric guitar and a very different set of hooks (guess who? Yes, Mr. Producer helped arrange and sits in on the electric guitar).
Brooks's voice is also recorded quite differently from past albums, which gives it a breathier sound, a bit closer to you but a bit standoffish as well. It works well, much better than my description, which is sort of like dancing about architecture, if you know what I mean. This is a tough review to write!
The songwriting is stock Williams, really solid lyrics and music. It's only different in that a) it's not the same songs and b) it's produced differently. If you know what I mean, you know that this is a strong compliment.
All in all, one of my favorite albums. Do yourself, get a copy, a pair of Sennheisers, and spend an evening with it. Write back if you're not convinced.
A real departure for Brooks.......2003-04-16
I'm surprised at some of the reactions to this album. There's so much to like about it. It has a bit more of a pop sound than his early stuff, but I love it. "Forget About Him" and "Half the Grace" would be top tens on the charts if the music industry sold music instead of images or clothing.
I didn't really need to hear another version of "Mother Earth," but other than that there isn't a wasted moment on the album. Also, the production on this album just blows away any of his previous albums. Phil "The Funk Monster" Madeira and his B-3 organ are a perfect match for Brooks' style.
Sorry to say I agree........2003-04-06
I've enjoyed Brooks for many many years, with the highlights being North From Statesboro and Knife Edge, IMO. Actually, Little Lion is pretty amazing too -- glad he finally did an all-instrumental album. I have no idea what happened here, like another reviewer. His voice is very muted on all the songs, like he's whispering almost every song -- a singing style I've never heard him do recorded or live. And it just doesn't work. The songs themselves are good; he did a super live show recently that I enjoyed immensely. This recording, however, is a great disappointment. And trust me, it hurts to say bad things about someone whose music I've enjoyed so much over the years.

Album Description
"Echoes In Blue" maintains continuity with the powerful musical devices of Wayne Wallace's critically acclaimed CD, "Three In One", yet it goes in new artistic directions, revealing more dimensions in Wayne's immense musical personality.
"Echoes In Blue" honors some masters in Wayne's musical pantheon with Latinized covers of jazz classics. The Cuban/Jazz/Funk of "Take The A- Train" is Wayne's interpretation of the influence of Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington on Afro-Caribbean music. The Cuban/Jazz of "Silver's Serenade" pays tribute to Horace Silver's pioneering contributions to the development of Latin Jazz. Wayne uses the Rumba form to highlight the simple timeless quality and harmonic potential of Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage". The CuBop of "The Bird" combines the rhythmic and harmonic freedom of Charlie Parker's composing, with the legendary groundwork of Latin Jazz developed by Dizzy Gillespie and Chano Pozo.
The Wallace original "Azure Blue" is a reflection of Wayne's love of Brazilian culture, and his appreciation of the influences of Milton Nascimento and Antonio Carlos Jobim on jazz and popular music. "Fan-tan" is an original tribute to the harmonic genius of Wayne Shorter -- whom Wallace rightly regards as one of our greatest contemporary composers. "Gingerbread Girl", one of Wayne's best-known originals, uses Mozambique, Soca, and Funk to celebrate the variety of styles in the art of the dance in American and Caribbean cultures. "Testimony" explores the joint influence of sacred Gospel and secular Blues on the development of Jazz. Wayne's search for spiritual identity through music is majestically expressed in his arrangement of the traditional Afro-Cuban "Koriomale" - a chant for Elegua, the Yoruban deity of the crossroads. "Santa Africana (for Yemaya)" pays homage to the Yoruban Goddess of the seas, with a beautiful composition accompanying a vividly mystical poem by Irene ! Moosen, recited by the great Brenda Boykin.
