In Good Company is a charming collection of flute and fiddle duets featuring Kevin Crawford, the flautist with Lunasa and Moving Cloud, playing with some of Ireland's finest fiddlers. Crawford teams up with famous names like Frankie Gavin, Tommy Peoples, and Martin Hayes, who plays viola on the set of reels "The Bag of Spuds/Matt Peoples," as well as lesser-known but still excellent musicians like Tony Linnane, Conor Tully, and James Cullinan, who is also one of Ireland's finest chefs. Most of the selections feature sparse but effective accompaniment by guitarist Arty McGlynn, pianist Carl Hession, and bodhran player Jim Higgins. Crawford also plays with a small chamber orchestra on three tracks, including a lovely version of the Scottish air "Coilsfield House." As good as the duets are, and they are all excellent, these folk-classical arrangements offer Crawford an opportunity to explore a richer sonic territory, which he does without sacrificing the spontaneity of his playing. On In Good Company, Crawford shows he is comfortable in just about any musical setting, from the fiddles and guitars of a lively kitchen session to the violins and cellos of a formal concert hall. --Michael Simmons

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

I love this CD. No, despite its name it is not the "ultimate" collection, as scarcely could be expected from a single CD. It is heavy on Mikado, as others have stated. It leaves out things I would have included and includes things I would have left out. But the performances are wonderful, traditional and all you expect from G&S. Considering the low price, it is well worth including in your G&S collection ... as PART of your collection. After the disappointment of the godawful Opera World video series (Don't buy it!) this CD is a joy and a relief.

3 out of 5 stars Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23

It seems that a collection of Gilbert & Sullivan music that has the name "The Ultimate Collection" in its title would boast a wide range of music, but I found the selection disappointing. Half of the tracks are songs from The Mikado, and the other half is divided between five... yes, FIVE other operettas. This means that the representation from each operetta is awfully scant. I would have liked to see less Mikado and more of everything else, and perhaps some highlights from the more obscure operettas (Princess Ida and The Sorcerer, namely).

In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.

Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.

It wouldn't be G&S if not for the ladies - so where are they? How could they leave out Mabel's aria - or Josephine's!? The only female aria included on this disc comes from Mikado, which is the least exciting (if G&S could be un-exciting) of the three! Everything else on the recording is great, but I am still quite disappointed.

This is a great collection, but unfortunately it doesn't have songs from all the works of G&S. Most notably, there is nothing from the "Yeoman of the Guard". I still reccommed it however as John Reed is wonderful!!

It's an ongoing challenge to find a recording of Gilbert and Sullivan that combines premium musicality and great theatrical performance. This recording is a true gem on both fronts. My only complaint is that for a "Best of" collection, this compilation is Mikado-heavy and scarcely touches on highlights from other masterpieces, particularly The Pirates of Penzance. This would be my favorite G&S CD of all time, of only it included tracks like "When the Foeman Bares his Steel," "Poor Wand'ring One," and "Dry the Glist'ning Tear," but then again, I guess there's no real consensus as to which are Gilbert and Sullivan's best works, and there are too many to fit on one CD.

I was not terribly impressed with this CD. Fortunately, I decided to get it from the library to see if it was good before deciding whether or not to buy it.

Although the orchestration of the songs is well done, most of them simply were not meant to be performed by a chorus; and they sound terrible in that form. If you want some of the songs on this CD, I suggest you look at one of Disney's compilation CDs in the Classic Disney Vol. 1-5 series or the actual soundtracks of the movies.

Where to start?! Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra have had a track record for recording some of the most stupendous movie music ever. Magical Musicals is just another example of how audaciously bold, yet beautiful Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have taken the original scores, molded them into the same pieces, yet at the same time, creating life of their own in each and every note. If you are looking for ANY soundtrack containing Disney music, this should be the first CD you listen to. There are others out there, and yes, they may sound beautiful and enchanting, but you won't find such a unique and compelling score anywhere else other than this CD. Check it out!!

First, to the person who criticizes the recording b/c of "Broadway Baby." Daisy Egan (who sings in in this recording) sounds like she's 10 becuase she IS young. She had just appeared on Braodway in Secret Garden and won a Tony for it. It's a joke...Broadway BABY...hello, it's a joke.

In a compilation of songs like this you're always going to have tracks that you prefer over others, but the majority of the renditions in this CD are great. This is simply one of the best collections of Sondheim out there. You get interpretations that span from "classical" (Green Finch), to bordering on insane (Anything Twice). This is to demonstrate how versatile this composer really is.

In my opinion, some of the best renditions are "Not a Day Goes By," "Anyone Can Whistle", "Girls Upstairs Medley," "Losing My Mind/Drive a Person Crazy," and "Weekend inthe Country." Makes me wish I had been there to witness it first hand.

If you love Sondheim and enjoy hearing Broadway performers, get this CD. A great recording.

I am sure no knowledgeable person would deny how absolutely perfect all these songs are. However, the performances on this album are extremely inconsistent. It will go from an excellent rendition (Waiting for the Girls medley, Sunday, With So Little To Be Sure Of, Sooner or Later, Green Finch, Send in the Clowns, Pretty Lady) to the weird (I never Do Anything Twice), to the bad (Broadway Baby, Our Time). I still have absolutely no idea how they managed to butcher one of the best songs ever written--Good Thing Going--and turn it into smooth jazz elevator music. Why would they give Broadway Baby to someone who sounds like she's 10? That said, Liza Minelli, Glenn Close, Karen Ziemba, Dorothy Laudon and the "Waiting for the Girls" performers are all very good. And ending with Bernadette Peters and "Sunday" ends the set on a absolutley fabulous note.

I have been a major Sondheim fan for quite some time, and I finally obtained a copy of this album. I was blown away by the excellent cast and phenomenal selection of music. It is obvious how much work went into this production, considering that this is the live recording of a one time show, and it's flawless. The songs cover all of his shows with the exception of "Passion," which was released 3 years after this show. Also, the shows for which he wrote only lyrics are ommited, like West Side Story, Gypsy, etc. Thus, you can find material from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Merrily we Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins.

There are two striking things about this CD (besides the music and performers themselves). First of all, some of the songs are completely stylistically reworked. The most obvious are "Good Thing Going" and "I Never do Anything Twice." Both are traditionally very ballady with a piano accompaniment, but here they have been redone as jazzy tunes. The result is excellent. Such reworkings demonstrate that Sondheim writes music for virtually any style, and in these cases, across several styles. It's a great example of his variety. The other interesting thing is how many songs have overlapping melodies of songs from different shows. Case in point, "Our Time" and "No one is Alone" are sung seperately by the Harlem Boys Choir and Betty Buckley (the original Grizabella in Webber's atrocious "CATS," although Buckley was excellent) respectively, and then combined. Putting these two songs together offer different meanings to each, and the music is only enhanced. Another example, the trio of "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs," "Love, I Hear," and "Live Alone and Like It" are sung in that order, and then the latter two are combined. Again, the meanings of the songs change, this time in an almost narrative style, and offering different takes on love in the same montage. Lastly (at least for this review, there are more), Dorothy Laudon's (the original Ms. Hannigan in Annie) combination of "Losing my Mind" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" is brilliant. Those who are familiar with these songs will wonder how exactly they fit, but trust me, they do. She swtiches back and forth between melodies to create a number that starts poignant and beautiful, and soon moves to become uproariously funny. Both the song reworkings and overlapping melodies of unrelated songs are all for the better.

I recommend this recording to anyone wanting to get better acquainted with some of Sondheim's best work, or those already familiar who want to hear a tour de force of phenomenal music. It has been said that Sondheim is a masterful lyricist (which he is), but lacks real talent for music. This CD is the final proof that such critics are wrong. His music may take a few listenings to get into, contrary to Webber or Wildhorn, but unlike those two, he doesn't cater to the audience. He challenges them to think outside of traditional musical theater in a glorious repertoise of shows that reach for a smarter, more sophisticated form.

There's something to be said for the first concert you ever see at Carnegie Hall. I was fortunate enough to have this be my first. This entire evening was devoted to his genius and the performers did not disappoint.

This wonderful double CD shows off the best and brightest of the musical theatre composer and it is, as one person put it, "an embarassment of riches." With songs from his finest works done in amazing arrangements (listen to that harmony in "We Had a Good Thing Going"!) combined with fabulous performers this is a Sondheim lovers delight.

My favorite song is, without a doubt, Dorothy Louden and her wonderful medley of "Losing My Mind" into "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" followed very closely by the recently departed Madeline Kahn singing "Getting Married Today."

Writer/director Paul Weitz' comic fable rises above its Hollywood generation-gap formula (older worker Dennis Quaid finds himself in a tense relationship with half-his-age new boss Topher Grace--who's also dating Quaid daughter Scarlett Johansson) with a graceful humanity lacking in similar mainstream fare. That warm sensibility is also capably underscored by an inviting slate of pop songs and the evocative original cues of Hedwig and the Angry Inch collaborator Stephen Trask. While there are the handful of expected oldies (Aretha Franklin's "Chain of Fools, "the debut hits "Reeling in the Years" and "Solsbury Hill" by Steely Dan and Peter Gabriel, respectively), the collection's atmosphere is largely set by a trio of introspective acoustic ballads by Iron & Wine, the similarly toned "Soundtrack of Our Lives" by Ten Years Ahead and David Byrne's, evocative, minimalist ode to the metro mundane, "Glass, Concrete and Steel." This movie was only ok for me but the soundtrack stuck out in my mind as really great. I was totally excited to see that when I bought this c.d. from Amazon it was inexpensive and even better than I remember. I love Stephen Trask. Many other good artists as well. One of my favorite albums right now.

Well you can't say a lot about the bunch of oldies, they're just great but i didn't buy the album for that. I bought it just to hear "The Trapeze Swinger" by Iron and Wine over and over again, just a couple of minutes hearing it at the end of the movie while leaving the theater was enough for me to fall in love with that song. I've never liked slow songs but for the times i feel sad, but this song just makes my eyes wet everytime i listen it. Just give it a try, it's worth, i promise.

All of these songs I loved in the movie and make for a great collection of songs. Iron & Wine are brilliant and add an element to the movie heard in this soundtrack that I do not think any other performer could have done. Trapeze Swinger is my favorite!

With In Good Company, tenor Lee Lessack gets a little help from his friends. An album of anodyne wallpaper-drivel: hypermanufactured in every worst sense. Fine, there's nothing wrong with the songs; it's just that all colour has been cloyingly bleached out of them. Tempi are uniformly slow, accompaniments, saccharine-coated, and the lyrics so indulgently mauled as to render them ironically sterile. What persuaded first-class musicians like Stephen Schwartz to have anything to do with this tedious project? Even the booklet looks like a second-rate ad promotion for a hotel chain. 'In Good Company?' Frankly, I'd rather be in on my own.

Perfect Blend of Voice, Song, and Performance!
I discovered this CD on a CD store feature wall and by the third clip I knew it was great. Three elements combine to make this CD outstanding. First, Lessack's baritone voice features warm, rich sound while maintaining the ability to float, never over-singing. Second, the CD possesses an exemplary collection of songs. The two recently written songs, "Sweet Mystery" and "Here's to You," match the quality of the more familiar selections. Third, Lessack's choice of duet partners in relation to the selected songs is perfect. Each partner adds to the specific song on which they join Lessack. For example, Brian Lane Green's vocals on the Journey rock ballad "Open Arms" lend the song authenticity. Nita Whitaker's vocals on "First Time Ever I Saw..." blend perfectly with Lessack's and capture the lyric's essential warmth. The addition of different duet partners for each selection make each song on the CD unique, yet the album maintains a beautiful coherence. Other stand out tracks include: "The Look of Love," "Never Saw Blue Like That," "For Good," "Let It Be Me," "The Rose," and "May I Suggest." This is the best CD I've purchased in several months. It deserves a wide audience.

Up until a few days ago I had never heard of Lee Lesseck. Now that I have I have discovered a great voice and one that I will enjoy listening to for a very long time. This is a smashing CD and one that I highly recommend to lovers of great songs, beautifully sung in a very unique and special way. Lee has linked up with other great singers, like Nita Whitaker, Brian Lane Green, Maureen McGovern and Michael Feinstein to name but a few from a list of 17 performers he sings with on this CD. Each singer not only compliments his voice but bring a dimension of sound and music not found on other CD's of this genre. I could name my favorite tracks but as they change with each hearing, I won't. Just buy it, enjoy it and pass the word. Lee Lesseck and "In Good Company" is a must for any lovers of great songs and great music. 5 Stars all the way.

On his new CD, Lee Lessack finds himself in phenomenal company. And this, from someone who was a little less than thrilled with the idea of a CD of duets -- I didn't really want Lee to have to share songs with other singers -- I wanted another CD of "pure Lee." I should have known that my reservations were unfounded. I know that when Lee Lessack does anything, it's done flawlessly, and this CD is certainly no exception.

Lee's voice -- which I personally think is currently the best male voice in any genre -- sounds wonderful, and blends amazingly with all seventeen of his duet partners. The roster of names that sing with him is almost as ecclectic as the list of song choices, but all combined, with Johnny Rodgers' wonderful arrangements, the CD is truly a masterpiece.

I could rave about every single song, but I'll limit myself to my very favorites, which are the a-MA-zing "Never Saw Blue Like That" with Mary Jo Mundy, "Sweet Mystery" with Jon Philip Alman, a surprisingly wonderful revisiting of "Bring Back Romance" with Ann Hampton Callaway, "Vincero Perdero" with Franc D'Ambrosio, "For Good" with Stephen Schwartz, and "Vincent" with Ken Page.

This is definitely a must-have CD.

Lee knows how to read a song and he knows how to pick singers that blend so well.
A great journey this album, so exciting to hear so many accomplished singers and songwriters. The duet with Paige is pure gold. A take on "open arms" that will open anyones heart. "sweet mystery" with Alman is a highlight- the two voices and the beautiful song, unmatched

With their soulful playing and artful, sometimes even ephemeral arrangements, the six women of Ensemble Galilei convey a rare depth of emotion. In the insert notes, gamba player Carolyn Ann Surrick describes their creative process: "[In making this recording, we engaged in]...a kind of work that is so focused and intense that years can go by in one afternoon... Extraordinary music-making requires trust... [We] live for the times when the only thing that exists right then is the music--when the instruments are speaking as if we don't exist, and they are having their own conversation." Thank you, Ensemble Galilei, for allowing the rest of us the privilege of coming along for the ride! It's simply delectable. This chamber ensemble, featuring fiddle, harp, gamba, oboe, pipes and percussion, can also be heard on their other Telarc release, "From the Isles to the Courts", and "The Mystic and the Muse: Celebrating 600 Years of Women in Music", on the Dorian label.

Ensemble Galilei provide some excellent arrangements of English renaissance compositions. I believe that John Playford (English Dancing Master) fans will be particularly satisfied with the renditions presented here. It is very unfortunate that E.G. did not provide more arrangements from such early music sources. Some of E.G.'s own compositions seem very weak and not in the renaissance spirit of the rest of the CD. Nonetheless, this CD is highly recommmended.

I found this album to be solid. Very sweet, but not afraid to use percussion which makes it livelier and more fun. I adore the quiet, peacefulness of the music and the flawless execution of these renaissance songs.

I recently had the good fortune to direct a performance of King Lear--the ENTIRE five acts, in a community theatre, non-profit setting. I used twenty-four fully committed non-actors, who for the love of the ideas, participated in this performance. The first and main challenge that I faced was, how do I go "behind" the words, and invoke the right emotions, etc., to give these actors the range and tools needed for an effective, powerful performance? Critical to this performance was the beauty and brilliance of this recording, which I used throughout the various scenes of the play. This helped the performers tremendously, creating the different tapestries in the mind of the Bard. In short, this work is real genius, that I was so happy that I stumbled across. I am now putting in our performance programs, along with our most heart-felt thanks to E.G., the name of the recording and I have copies from Telarc to sell at each performance!

    I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
    The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

    There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

    In Good Company is a charming collection of flute and fiddle duets featuring Kevin Crawford, the flautist with Lunasa and Moving Cloud, playing with some of Ireland's finest fiddlers. Crawford teams up with famous names like Frankie Gavin, Tommy Peoples, and Martin Hayes, who plays viola on the set of reels "The Bag of Spuds/Matt Peoples," as well as lesser-known but still excellent musicians like Tony Linnane, Conor Tully, and James Cullinan, who is also one of Ireland's finest chefs. Most of the selections feature sparse but effective accompaniment by guitarist Arty McGlynn, pianist Carl Hession, and bodhran player Jim Higgins. Crawford also plays with a small chamber orchestra on three tracks, including a lovely version of the Scottish air "Coilsfield House." As good as the duets are, and they are all excellent, these folk-classical arrangements offer Crawford an opportunity to explore a richer sonic territory, which he does without sacrificing the spontaneity of his playing. On In Good Company, Crawford shows he is comfortable in just about any musical setting, from the fiddles and guitars of a lively kitchen session to the violins and cellos of a formal concert hall. --Michael Simmons

    Hi, got Kevin Crawford's CD "In Good Company" a few months back and have been meaning to say something about it so here it is. I bought this CD because I liked Crawford's earlier work like the famous version of "Christy Barry Set" and his rendition of "George White's Favourite/Sligo Maid". It turned out to be something quite different from the earlier stuff, and stuff from Lunasa. This CD is Kevin Crawford playing in a straight-ahead manner with many fiddle magnificents like Tommy Peoples, Sean Smyth, Martin Hayes, Manus McGuire and more. No complex arrangements here. Basically, everyone just plays the melody together like in a session, with guitar and bodhran accompaniment. I intially thought that the CD tends to get monotonous soundwise because most tracks are just basic arrangement with fiddle/flute combo. However it got much better with repeated listenings as the deftness of these musicians eventually dawned upon me. This is not a CD for those looking for flashy fireworks or arrangements. Buy it if you like to hear (*extremely*) good musicians play tunes, without too many twists. Or if you're looking for a CD with many fiddle legends on it, this is the one to buy. By the way some of these fiddlers can actually make their fiddle sound like other instruments! Manus McGuire's fiddling on a slow air (Track eight), actually sounds like Uilleann Pipes! Sean Smyth's fiddle also sounds suspiciously like a box accordian sometimes. Special recommendation of this CD for people who are into learning tunes by ear through recreational listening. Thats what I use it for too. The tunes here are not played too fast and most of the time its only the basic melody with variations kept to a minimum so its actually easy to pick up a melody after a few spins.

    Flute Player Kevin Crawford, of the Irish band Lunasa, has released his second recording (outside of Lunasa's CD). Here he pays homage to the flute and fiddle, a pairing which represents for him "the perfect instrumental combination." After listening to this recording, who would argue with him? Here he plays duets with various fiddle players, nine fiddlers in all, one per track, a sort of traditional Irish version of the Frank Sinatra "duets" album! They are: Sean Smyth, James Cullinan, Frankie Gavin, Martin Hayes, Tony Linnane, Tommy Peoples, Manus McGuire, Mick Conneely, and Conor Tully. Some of these players, such as James Cullinan, Sean Smyth, Conor Tully, and Mick Conneely, are rarely heard outside of Ireland, and it's a special treat to hear these players featured on a CD which is readily available internationally. Such a great lineup of melody players deserves great accompaniment, and this they get with Arty McGlynn, Jim Higgins, and Carl Hession on guitar, bodhran, and keyboards, respectively. To my ear, Arty McGlynn is the finest guitar accompanist in Irish music. The exciting track of reels with Crawford, Peoples, and McGlynn is alone worth the price of the CD, for its breathtaking beauty and power. Tommy Peoples also reprises a set of Mazurkas he had recorded once before on a solo LP, an album that has been out of circulation for many years. One of these is his own composition. The musical sympathy between Kevin Crawford and all these fiddlers is very evident. Many individual styles are represented here, and there is much variety of tunes, including the beautiful Scottish tune "Coilsfield House," but there is a flow to this whole recording, both in the tight unison playing, and the tune selection. All in all, Kevin Crawford has offered up a beautiful recording, and a testament to small ensemble traditional Irish music.
