Usually when you read that an album is "inspired by" a motion picture or TV show, you can be certain that the one thing those artists were inspired by was a big fat check, and consequently those records generally do not sound very good. But the debut collaboration between no-longer-underground hip-hop artists Dangermouse and MF Doom, allegedly inspired by the Cartoon Network's late-night stoner-centric animation series Adult Swim, is far better than it has any right being. Doom has one of the best flows around, and he's at least as smart as your favorite dictionary-digger. Danger Mouse's obscure samples are excellent, but this is just a fun record that's not trying to be more, or less. Character voices get worked in, and these are pretty cool, especially Shakey's send-up of the fake answering machine cliché. There're also guest appearances by Ghostface Killah, Cee-Lo, and Talib Kweli. When it comes to rappers hanging with cartoon characters, Mouse and the Mask is more fun than a Shaq attack and a Gorillaz record combined. --Mike McGonigal

Album Description

Two of this generation's most respected hip-hop artists, Danger Mouse and MF Doom have come together for this album, inspired by Adult Swim, Cartoon Network's popular late-night animation network. Doom, with his near obsession with masked identities and superhero personas, and Mouse, with his murky, ethereal soundscapes that cloud men's minds like Mandrake, are the perfect partners for the project, and each has inspired the other to the finest work of their careers. "The Mouse & The Mask" contains character voices and skits from Adult Swim's most popular original shows, including "Aqua Teen Hunger Force", "Sealab 2021", and "Harvey Birdman, Attorney At Law", along with guest appearances by Cee-Lo, Talib Kweli, and Ghostface Killah.

4 out of 5 stars Should've been spectacular, got good instead.......2007-06-13

After gaining worldwide notoriety with the ceased and desisted Grey Album, Danger Mouse replaced Dan The Automator as producer for the highly publicized Gorillaz sophomore LP Demon Days. As such, he is currently one of underground hip-hop's hottest beat-makers and this will assuredly continue in light of this MF Doom collaboration. Last year, the Madlib assisted Madvillain saw Doom hitting more lists than not so it's safe to assume The Mouse & The Mask is pretty much destined for success. However, with almost every character from the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim receiving prime breakdown and interlude time, Danger Doom is the basic antithesis of the b-movie horror vibe Madvillainy enjoyed, which probably benefited from a more universal appeal as your enjoyment of this DM and MF release will be greatly affected by your attitude towards the likes of Harvey Birdman and Space Ghost.

4 out of 5 stars [adult swim]'s Commercialization (Rating: 8 out of 10- -4 stars).......2006-12-04

[adult swim] was being viewed by many people who enjoyed humorous cartoons on the Cartoon Network Channel. I might have been watching that channel since the age of 5 (it used to come on locally here in Atlanta up until about '94). [adult swim] has been responsible for bringing us humous PG 13 cartoons such as "Aqua Teen Hunger Force", "Sealab 2120", and more. I believe they felt the need to cash in on the music industry by allowing MF Doom and Danger Mouse to drop an album under the name Danger Doom. And truthfully, I believed that people bought this album, just becasue of the [adult swim] logo on it.

The Danger Doom album "The Mouse And The Mask" was good to listen to. Most of MF Doom's rhymes are good to listen to (a better move over that "Madvillany" album if you ask me). His flow was consistant throughout this album. Danger Doom's production is good too. This was the first time I hear his production, and it was very impressive.

What I like most about this album is the cameos by the cartoon characters themselves. Master Shake appears on a few tracks leaving voice mail messages cussing out Danger Mouse for not letting him rhyme. Meatwad and Brak spits a few rhymes on this album. There are more cartoon cameos throughout this album too.

Guest appearances are few. Ghostface Killah appears on "The Mask" which is good. Cee-Lo sings the hook to "Benzi Box". And my favorite track is "Old School" with Talib Kweli, is perfect.

The problem I have with this album is the length. The album clocks in at about 37 minutes, making it seem kind of short. Also the songs are short in length too, averaging about 2 and a half minutes, not hearing enough Doom.

Other than that, this album is recommended to fans of [adult swim] who haven't purchased this album, or fans of both MF Doom and Danger Mouse. There are no filler tracks here. Just head nodding music. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Hip-Hop at its best.......2006-11-26

This is a OK album considering its one of the first Danger Mouse+M.F. Doom callabo's(other's were November has Come-Gorillaz)If you ask me some of the tracks will leave you wanting more from the duo and some of the beats annoy you(Basket case, benzie box) other than that the samples are ill danger's beats are one of the sickest, and doom's rhymes are ill(always have bee)if you're gonna cop it its worth your monbey!

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic Beats.......2006-11-04

I was a little skeptical when I purchased this album, not being all that fond of the only track I had heard MF Doom rap on, "November Has Come" by Gorillaz, but I gave it a chance.

Danger Mouse really shines on this album, making every track completely fresh and funky. MF Doom even grew on me, though, among my favorites would have to be Old School, with Talib Kweli, and Benzi Box, with Cee-Lo. However, the whole album is spectacular really. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the bleeping of profanity. I feel that the content on the album is more adult oriented, as is the subject matter from which it took its inspiration, and as such, I feel that the bleeping was unnecessary.

Great album, though, Doom, Danger, and all the others really took me by surprise, and it ended up that this album was far better than expected.

3 out of 5 stars A little disappointed.......2006-09-28

This is my first album from either artist and I have to say, that I was expecting a little more. Adult Swim really, really pushed this album so I bought it. MF Doom is very good at what he does. His rhymes are off the hook and Danger Mouse kicks butt with making beats. The clips from the Adult Swim crew are pretty funny. But, with the exception of a handful of songs, the album lacks that "I wanna listen to it over and over again" feel. I like the album, but maybe I was expecting too much from it.

The poorly drawn late night cable cartoon show Aqua Teen Hunger Force and its cleverly titled movie spin-off are of course far funnier than they have any right to be. Whether the show's audience even gets half the satire is part of its appeal (which is, like, on different levels, man). The Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters soundtrack consists of skits and songs from the film along with new material. And while the absence of Frylock on the album is a bit confusing, it's generally as top rate as the show itself. The Aqua Teen dudes even had the sense to hire the great and out-of-work old school hip-hop artist Schoolly D to compose a new version of their theme song. The Hold Steady song here is pretty decent, but the metal and rap tracks are the real meat, especially the (aforementioned) Schoolly D, Mastodon, Early Man, and Andrew W.K. tracks. Insane-o-Flex's "I Like Your Booty (But I'm Not Gay)" is the definition of "guilty pleasure," just like the movie itself, which is sort of about an immortal piece of exercise equipment which threatens the balance of galactic peace--"and it is up to the Aqua Teen Hunger Force to run away from it." --Mike McGonigal

This soundtrack is awesome but short. You get to hear the great songs from this movie. It starts with master shake singing his great ballad and movies right along into some head smashing metal(Mastadon, Unearth. The soundtrack has a few tracks with the guys from the Hunger Force telling us what they think of the sondtrack. And of course you get meetwad at the end showing us he can rock out. I would recamend this to any die hard fan of the show and anyone who loved the movie. And to any one who loves metal!!!`

It's a 50 Cent world, and we're just living in it. Lloyd Banks's solo debut is one in an upcoming series of G Unit-affiliated releases coming to a hood near you. With his understated raspy flows and gift for penning clever punch lines, Banks has long been considered the crew's nicest lyricist. He might also be the most braggadocious. On choice cut "Warrior," the narcissism begins: "I'm smooth as the Isleys, sometimes I surprise me." Then there's the self-explanatory "I'm So Fly," produced by Timbaland, and "If You So Gangsta," where he informs his fellow hood dwellers why they can't compete with the "rap Lebron." As with all G Unit productions, the beats are first-rate. Remarkable backing tracks supplied by underrated producers Hi-Tek and Baby Grand ("I Get High," "Die One Day") act as a much needed counterweight to Banks's clichéd thug-guns-girls-jewelry banter. A better reason to cop this album is to hear Banks's introspective take on the flipside of thug living. R&B-tinged ballad "Karma" demos his ability to serenade the hotties in more, um, gentlemanly fashion. When he raps "if it wasn't for 50, I probably wouldn't be around," he might be right. But the rap world's no worse off with this capable debut in our midst. --Dalton Higgins

5 out of 5 stars What?!?!.......2007-05-15

Whoa! Definitely shocked from the reviews I saw on here. So much so, that I decided to write my own. Some of these fools had the nerve to not even mention "Work Magic" as a classic track. Aside from the other bangers, "Work Magic" WHAT?!?! Come on people, listen to that again. Mind blowing, just shows you who is writing this feedback. Honestly, before this album I barely listened to Lloyd Banks, because I thought he was another punch line rapper and I can't deal with that for an extended period of time. But the album "Hunger for More" proved me wrong. Anyway, this is a hood classic, maybe not a mainstream hit, but the streets loved it.

5 out of 5 stars this cd is dope.......2007-03-11

well its a really good cd and ill tell you a funny thing the first time i heard this cd i had no idea who this guy was or nothing cause i was in cali when i found it outside in the driveway and i went inside and listened to it then i got back and found out who it was and liked him ever since

3 out of 5 stars I don't know..........2006-08-09

I got this CD when it first came out and no matter how many times I listen to it, I just can't get into it. Nothing about Banks' style really grabs me. His rhymes are pretty basic, he sounds like he's half asleep when he raps (not much energy at all) and he doesn't bring anything new to the hip-hop industry. Money, cars, jewlery, girls. Been there, done that. Too bad, because the guy has potential Hopefully, his next album will be better. I won't buy it though; I'll just download it.

The reason I gave this 2 stars is because there are some decent tracks, like...

On Fire
Karma
Warrior
Warrior Part 2
If You So Gangsta

4 out of 5 stars FIRE.......2006-08-05

Lloyd Banks is classic. This album is a 4...TIL THE END was the hottest track in hip hop in 2004, also 2005. Can't wait til Rotten Apple when Lloyd Banks rips The Game. I heard theres a piggy bank on Rotten Apple going after Game. The man is a lyricist the hardest rapper in the Unit. Reminds me of Yukmouth with the flow. Eastcoast rapper with a Westcoast rhyme style.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad, But Nowhere Near "Get Rich".......2006-07-28

I bought Hungry For More during the G-Unit hype and I have to say that this is a good album. The best tracks on the album are both Warriors and a great story in Til The End.The beats are great as we would expect from anything G-Unit. If Lloyd Banks can improve on his next album is could beon par with "Get Rich."

4 out of 5 stars A stunning soundtrack.......2006-09-26

"The Hunger" is easily one of my favorite vampire films of all time. You got David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve along with some gorgeous classical/ambient music. What more can one ask for? Maybe the inclusion of immortal classic "Bela Lugosi's Dead" on the soundtrack but that probably would have probably detracted the sumptuous classical melodies of the soundtrack. Other than that slight flaw, I absolutely love "The Hunger". The soundtrack is a mixture of classical and ambient music. The combination works. The classical tracks are gorgeous. Michel Rubini's film score is nothing short of spine-tingling.His music has the right elements to fit whatever eerie scene it is accompanying in the film. I could definitely hear and feel the terror in his music especially on "The Arisen". Rubini's music had the same elements that made the film score to "Psycho" so eerie and terrifying. Of course can't forget about Delibes' breathtaking "Lakme" (aka Flower Duet). All in all, "The Hunger" is a pretty darn good soundtrack. This is how soundtracks to vampire films ought to sound like. It is both beautiful and terrifying.

5 out of 5 stars Why is "The Gallows" Missing?.......2005-11-02

La Deneuve sat at her piano grieving for dead David Bowie in THE HUNGER and played PatriciadelaRocchia's version of "The Gallows", and THAT was pop-cinema trash history, and, darn, it ain't even on here!!

Which happens a lot with licensing and trying to put together a soundtrack that's affordable. That doesn't detract from the gems that are here by Shubert and Delibes, but the Electronic stuff --- hmmm, mixed bag of atmospherics.

4 out of 5 stars Super score for a super film!.......2003-02-28

After all these years, 'The Hunger' is still unlike any film of its kind. The music plays a large part in its mystique and 're-sale' value. A more comprehensive CD with the missing parts should be planned as 'Bela Lugosi's Dead' is missing and helped set the tone of the film. Productions like this don't come along often enough. I gave it 4 stars only because of the missing pieces.

4 out of 5 stars This should get 5 Stars but..........2002-11-07

There are key classical numbers and arrangements that are missing here. The cd IS worth buying and is wonderful. A great version of Lakme with piano is in here. But they should do a more comprehensive soundtrack or an additional one. When the dvd finally comes out I will scrutinize the music credits in depth.

Update: Here is what SHOULD be on this cd for non-original music-

Non-Original Music by
Gregorio Allegri (from "Miserere")
Daniel Ash (song "Bela Lugosi is Dead")
Johann Sebastian Bach (from "Suite #1 for solo cello in G-major/Partita #3 in E-major")
Léo Delibes (from "Lakmé")
Kevin Haskins (song "Bela Lugosi is Dead") (as Bauhaus)
David J (song "Bela Lugosi is Dead")
Edouard Lalo (from "Piano Trio No. 1 in C")
Peter Murphy (song "Bela Lugosi is Dead")
Maurice Ravel ("Le Gibet" from "Gaspard de la nuit")
Franz Schubert (from "Trio in E flat Op. 100")

As you can see the pieces by Lalo and Ravel are sorely missed as well as Bauhaus "Bela Lagosi Is Dead"

5 out of 5 stars Had to have it..........2001-08-29

2 out of 5 stars I'm among those who don't quite understand this........2007-04-17

I still am in the dark as to why this is rendered a classic album. Sure, the first track was pretty good and opened with an interesting riff...but that was about it. I must say, I do enjoy the first track a lot...it is what people describe it to be. Still though, no one ever mentioned that the riff repeats 50,000 times- and even though the repetition actually doesnt bother me, personally, so much, after about 3 or 4 sequential listens, it gets a bit boring.

As for the rest of the CD: Definitely not all it's cracked up to be. Admittedly, it gives you about 2 or 3 songs of cold and dismal feeling black metal...but the rest of the LP is just a bore really.

I agree with what was stated before. I have no idea who came up with the idea that black metal has to be gritty and hold a lacking production. I get the fact that it makes it seem more primitive and that some people like that, but why does that mean commerically geared black metal bands have to be held at a lower standard?

Overall, this album is okay. I wouldnt say its as horrible as some have quoted it to be, but it isnt anything great either. You really have to be in the mood to listen to it, and you cant expect to listen for too long, considering it sounds very alike throughout the whole thing.

5 out of 5 stars IS...What It Proclaims to Be, and Does It Well........2007-02-24

From the first moment I put Transilvanian Hunger in for an initial listen I knew it was the type of Black Metal I'd enjoy. The guitar riffs are GRITTY, the vocals are like the wailings of a tortured soul from the depths of the pit! While the songs themselves are minimalistic the sounds evoked are exactly what you're looking for. Dark, intense, and somber. The songs are also cleverly layered with subtle variations that the careful ear will discern easily. When I consider this album as a whole it is, quite simply, PASSIONATE Black Metal! If you haven't heard Darkthrone before, try this album first, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars TRVE, GRIM, EVIL, KVLT .......2006-12-12

This release is arguably the most influential black metal record of all time. This is "trve kvlt" black metal in its most pure and stripped down form. No pretensions... no nonsense... just pure evil. Darkthrone hate our contemporary times... this is total nihilistic bliss and a knife wound to our useless and pathetic world built upon deception, illusions, and lies! This is anti-commercial black metal. You can't scare your parents with this release because this music is well beyond any feeble attempts of moronic teenage rebellion. This record promotes the slaughter and genocide of Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir mall dwelling, self-pitying cry baby Goths.

5 out of 5 stars Raw Power........2006-06-28

Call this Darkthrone's basement tapes. It's very fast, very raw, and very repetitive. When I think of black metal, this is the kind of sound and quality that I'm thinking of: a blur of scorched black tar (Vlad Tepes anyone?). Certain bands, despite a violent sound, are too clean sounding for my taste. This is good'n'dirty. The riffs and drums are as monochromatic as the album art, which appears as if it were made on a mimeograph machine, and it sounds as if it were recorded on a four track and transferred to a magnetic casette tape -- which then became the master. It's Bathory but faster, Venom with thinner drums, Sodom with thicker guitars.

It's not worth debating whether this is the "greatest" black metal album ever -- who cares if it is? If you like your black metal very raw and not particulary "groovy" (in a Celtic Frost kind of way), then this is your baby. If you like your black metal in thick slabs of hyperspeed, a la Hellhammer or Frost, then this isn't your thing. It's that simple. Maybe you prefer Emperor's wall of sound, or Mayhem's NWOBHM riffs, or maybe you prefer the cacophonous, barbaric bashing of Darkthrone. I prefer all three; if you're a black metal fan, you'll probably prefer all three as well. Given this fact, you will not find it important whether it is the "greatest" or not, just that it's really primitive, Bathory-inspired madness.

For the atavism in all of us.

5 out of 5 stars A sonic blizzard to be remembered.......2006-04-25

Many consider this album to be the definitive black metal album. This doesn't reflect the quality of Transilvanian Hunger, but rather the impact it made on the genre. As usual, there are two camps. Those who like the album, and those who pass it off as dull and repetitive. Evidently I'm in the former. Nocturno Culto's trem melodies drone obsessively, freezing Darkthrone's ice-cold melodies into the listener's mind. That and the muted production sculpt a rather hypnotic lull, strangely juxtaposed with rabid vocal delivery up there with Abbath and Dead's classic performances. The maintained, simplistic melodies create the sense of a ray of light piercing a dense veil of mist, when a new tempo comes skewering forth. Instead of throwing obvious hooks at you, Fenriz and Nocturno traverse their own frostbitten path, and incite the listener to join in. Recommended.

Apparently Michael Bolton underwent a transformation After "Everybody's Crazy." The biggest change? This is a great album! It comes with a killer package of hard rock and soft ballads, making it a beautifully put together record. Although I wasn't a big fan of "Take A Look At My Face," it just sounded too 80's for me. But otherwise, good stuff, Michael.

2 out of 5 stars Bolton's Last Dance. .......2006-04-30

This were Michael took the soft rock exit off the hard rocker highway.
1. Hot Love - One of the four hard rocker songs
2. Wait on love - His second hard rocker song
3. (Sittin on) the dock of the bay - I accually like this cover. I don't like how he goes off at the end of the song
4. Gina - this is Michael's 3rd most rocking song he ever had out.
5. That's what Love is all about - adult contemporary to the bone.
6. The Hunger - okay
7. Your all that I needed - one of the couple of decent songs on this record
8. Take a look at my face - bad song
9. Walk away - okay.
WHY IS MICHAEL LOOKING LIKE A TOTAL BAD ASS ON THE BACK OF THE CD.

4 out of 5 stars The Hunger.......2005-10-10

This indeed was the album that got me hooked. Even though "The Hunger" was not Michael's best work. But it's still a damn good album. I give it 4 stars because it's a great mix of rock & soul.

3 out of 5 stars Michael Bolton has redeeming qualities.......2005-04-26

As many earlier reviews have stated, this was the CD where Michael Bolton started to change over from a hair-metal rocker to an AC balladeer. I like many of the songs here, including both the rockers like "Gina" and "Hot Love" as well as the wonderful ballads "That's What Love is All About" and "Walk Away". Now, you would have to be smoking crack to say that his version of "(Sittin' On) The Dock of The Bay" surpasses Otis Redding's original. However, I do recall at the time that Mr. Redding's widow said that she enjoyed Michael's remake.

So much ink has been spilled saying how truly bad is Michael Bolton. Well, I will stick up for him and say that although listening to his strained vocals for hours would get old, I certainly don't mind throwing on one of his CD's every now and then.

What I always find amusing is that critics often deride AC artists like Mr. Bolton, Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, etc. During Michael's hits period of the late 80's and early 90's, some of the artists that were praised by critics included Arrested Development and Soul II Soul in the R&B category and Blind Melon and Soul Asylum in the rock category. Well, all of these critical darlings have faded into obscurity, while artists like Michael, Celine and Barbra who are thrashed by the critics have strong fan bases that continue to support their albums.

I certainly don't recommend this CD to any Bolton haters out there, but for those of you who became fans later, you might want to go back and buy this CD and enjoy some of his earlier music.

This is a great 3 CD album, quality all the way through by the living LEGEND MF Grimm.

make sure to check it out!

1 out of 5 stars whut tha??!#/?.......2007-03-17

you guys really rate this guy? don't get me wrong, i'm open to a different style than what's spoon fed to us all by the mass media. i loved it when sage francis walked on stage pointing out his cd discman as his dj. i love El-P's unorthodox beats (who doesn't?). i love kool keith's many different personas, regardless of how hard it is too keep track of them all. but i just can't get my head around MF Grimm's flow.

why does it sound like MF is reading his rhymes straight off his notepad for the first 6 tracks on disc 1??? then the next 4 tracks are ill. are we listening to someone else on these tracks? here's a tip: if the words don't fit the line, please don't force it. A-MER-I-CAN HUNG-GER...i hate it! and there's a reason why the review below said there are no stand out tracks, but it's not because the production is good throughout. this would have to be one of the blandest albums i have heard...even more so than the generic 90's hip hop releases like eric b's self titled album, main source without extra P, or souls of mischief's 2nd offering, no man's land.

i want to like this album, not only so i feel i didn't waste my 30 bucks, but to expand my hip hop knowledge, but please MF, bring some skills if you're gonna dis Doom. just 'cos one rapper has beef with another doesn't mean i'm gonna take sides. if both are good i'm not gonna rob myself of pleaseure i get from hearing a good piece of work. i like both El-P and & 7L & eso. i love el da sensei & tame one. i like these guys cos they rock it no matter who they leave off their xmas card lists. but Grimm, you embarass yourself dissin' a living legend.

5 out of 5 stars Such a giant pill to swallow, yet so healthy for your soul.........2006-12-08

If you aren't skeptical going into this album, then you maybe a little too optimistic. I'll state why as easily as I possibly can; would you even expect your favorite emcee to be able to pull off an album with three discs, which each consist of twenty tracks, and run about an hour long per album? I know that I couldn't even trust my all-time favorite emcees to deliver on such an ambitious effort, and would expect a large amount of filler among the dope tracks. Although I'm a large fan of Grimm, I can't say that he's my favorite emcee of all time, or even today, and I was more than suspecting a disc worth of filler. I KNOW Grimm is one of the illest in the business, past and present, but three discs? Most emcees can't even release two discs without including a number of lackluster cuts. It's remarkable that Grimm can blaze through sixty tracks, and continue captivating along the ride.

With that being said, this release is phenomenally crafted, and legendary for its concept alone; if double-discs album littered with filler like All Eyez on Me and Life After Death are classic albums, what does that make a virtually flawless triple-disc album like MF Grimm's American Hunger? While Grimm may not have the commercial backing of another emcee who was shot nearly a dozen times, or the cult-like support that his former partner-in-rhyme possesses, he is one of the dopest emcees you're going to find in any part of the hip-hop game, and his work-ethic even puts the most prolific emcees' quantity of material to shame. However, despite this album consisting of sixty tracks, quantity isn't the essential idea behind it; quality is.

Giving a thorough review of a work of art this massive would be nearly impossible to do, especially with the word-limit Amazon has set, and I doubt anyone has the time, or even the patience to do a run-down on each of these tracks; and believe me, every track found within this album deserves the same amount of attention as the next. While there may not be any track you immediately jump to on any of the three discs(with the exception of the infamous album closer, "The Book of Daniel"), it WILL keep you along, and entertained, for the entire ride. With sophisticated production, tight lyrics, and a range of emotion displayed by few other emcees, MF Grimm creates an album that is almost like a 'thank you' to his loyal supporters. In fact, scratch that, not almost - this IS a thank you note to his fans, and fans will be ever the more gratious based on this release.

Whether Grimm is spitting street-tales, introspective, and heartwrenching tales, or just dropping general knowledge, American Hunger succeeds in all fields, and then some. It may've received little publicity, even within the blogger realm, but if any release of the last decade deserves undisputed critical acclaim, it's this release. Hip-hop heads will find great solace in Grimm's rhymes and flows, and the fresh beats laced throughout the album. Those who aren't familiar with Grimm, this is recommended to introdce you to the man; it's his best, and most personal work to date, and yes, that includes all three discs. Fans of DOOM, like myself, don't worry about the beef; it's a shame, definitely, but as long as these two ill emcees continue releasing the music we've come to adore, no internal conflicts can change your view. Buy this album, and not only support hip-hop and Grimm, but also the ambition, and unbelievable amount of sweat and tears that went into this release; no matter how many dope releases have come out in this fine year for hip-hop, MF Grimm's stands out as the most ambitious, and complete work.

4 out of 5 stars The Original MF is Hot to Death (Def).......2006-08-07

Three CDs, 60 songs, and no filler. Amazingly, MF Grimm's gigantic triple album (the first in hip hop history) is full of solid material. I'm a fan of Grimm, but to be honest, I was skeptical when I heard about this album. Hip hop records these days generally feature two or three stand out tracks and the rest is junk. But American Hunger did not fall victim to this horrible trend. My hat is off to MF Grimm and his Day By Day fam.

Like always, Grimm's lyrics are on point and tackle just about every topic under the sun and are delivered with a lot of emotion and a variety of flows, or as the name indicates, with Many Flows (MF). Another review mentioned the two songs featuring Nate Denver. For those who don't know, Nate Denver is journalist. I've seen his stuff in Vibe, Mass Appeal (Ghostface and MF Doom piece) and Scratch. The two songs he's on are decidedly different, but they're hot. They remind me of Gnarls Barkley and N.E.R.D. Variety is what helps hip hop grow, so hats off again to Grimm for pushing limits.

This album is a definite must buy. Never fear the Reaper's here.

4 out of 5 stars Hip hop history on MF Grimm's triple disc!!!.......2006-08-04

[...]
WOW!!! MF Grimm releasing a triple LP! This is an amazing feat and one that makes for many skeptics. 3 CDs must mean there's a lot of garbage all over the place. In most cases, yes, but here Grimm laces each disc with a theme and simply drops science. "Grimm, you've been shot like 50/ you sould rhyme about it like 50/ then you'll get paid like 50" Okay, maybe not the dopest rhymes he has on the LP, but they stick out in my head. Yes, there are a couple joints that are blaaah, but for the most part the only thing that really sucks with this album is its cover.

Quite a few stand out tracks throughout the album with production by DJ Crucial, Skammadik (what's up fam), Soce (what's up), Architect, J. Marty and a ton of others with guest spots from other M.I.C. members, Large Pro and PMD. Honestly, the only tracks I cannot listen to are produced by Niel... or Nate Denver, pure garbage. Just imagine if Bob Denver tried making hip hop. Yep...

A couple months ago Grimm started building a buzz for this LP due to his developing beef with Doom and the release of "Book of Daniel." The track samples the same ish as "Pass the Bone" from GZA, but this track stings so much more. The kind of dis track that makes you go, "Damn... Only a loved one could say ish like that."

All in all, this was an amazing feat and it is an amazing LP. Maybe one day Grimm and Doom will kill the beef, but with Doom's rise in popularity and fame with the white kids, I'm not sure. Money is a crazy drug.

Album Description

The infamous JUCIFER has returned with its long-awaited new full-length If Thine Enemy Hunger. ...Hunger, the Athens, GA power -duo's first proper album in almost four years, serves up an unforgettable collection of the melodic, bombastic rock that is their calling card. The dreamy, seductive vocals of the gorgeous Amber Valentine melt into monolithic walls of guitar and pounding drums (courtesy of wildman Edgar Livengood) to form the most infectious heavy rock you will ever hear. With a sound as big as the hooks it's 15 tracks carry, If Thine Enemy Hunger is a total eargasm and vibrant return to form by one of the US's most unique rock bands.

4 out of 5 stars THE CHILD DEVIANT.......2007-02-14

Original!!!! I didn't like every single song, but overall, this is an album worth praising. The music bounces from the spooky death metal-eske of thier past to the more overt grunge-eske alternative style of thier modern incarnation. This band seems to have the unique abuility to go all over the place with thier compostion and aim..and yet, it never seems pretentios or intentional. The bottom line...JUCIFER are quite wiered...and they do wiered quite well. Oh, and yes, they rock! >:)

4 out of 5 stars Simply rad........2007-01-10

The above review of this album is extensive and detailed and, well, not completely right in my humble opinion. I would agree with the first impression, though...it just seemed lacking on the first listen. Then again, this album was recorded 2 1/2 years ago. One thing I keep in mind is: would I have thought differently of it then? The answer is: I would have loved it, because I love this band's creativity. Is every song a winner? That's your opinion. Now let's get to mine...
First of all, the first track is AWESOME. It's got all the pummeling, crushing power and melodic subtlety that I crave in a Jucifer song. As a fan of the Melvins before this band I have a soft spot for lurching crunch-a-thons like this. And what song on this album would be a better opener? None come to mind.
True, the second song is more of the same. But wow! It's the way they make these concepts they're own--Ed's tinkering in between the beats on this song are really unique--that make the songs stand out. I, too, recall seeing them play this song live and was struck by it's intentionally jilting beat.
As the disc moves on we get more variety in tempo and texture, more hooks are introduced that get stuck in your head. 'Lucky Ones Burn' and 'Hennin Hardine' are just, well, kinda poppy--but in a good way.
When I heard 'Antietam' and 'My Benefactor' back to back I started to understand the album more as a collection of songs that sonically hang together because of their diversity. I've never heard Amber's voice more chilling than 'Antietam', and yes, I love the banjos too. Then they turn right around and come back at you with a ballad...good sequencing.
'Four Suns', 'Pontius of Palia' and 'Bachslider' start to slip into the 'Nirvana riff territory' part of the album. This seems a bit too pedestrian for such a killer band, but the material is still good. I have a feeling they're good live songs.
'Luchamos' is a fun little rocker that rhythmically calls to mind 'Run to The Hills' by Iron Maiden. 'Ludlow' offers more loud/soft/loud dynamics with a great lilting verse. The advantage of most of these middle tracks is that they are shorter than the sludge-factory numbers at the beginning. I agree that most of them would suffer from more length.
'The Plastic Museum' is a nice piece that offers a different arrangement with simply a guitar and vocal track. This song is really well written and produced. I always love to hear the ambient sound of a guitarist striking the strings on recordings, and it fits in perfectly here.
One of my favorite tracks is 'In A Family Way'. The way Amber mutitracked her vocals on this song, and the album as a whole, is beautiful. This song finally allows Ed to pound out some of those machine gun fills I love to hear, too.
The last two songs are most impressive in the mood they project. Somber, quiet and pensive, but never too slow in tempo. Again, the melodic structure of these tunes get caught in your head and you'll find yourself humming them all day.
Yup, I love this album. I love this band. I can't wait to hear the next one.

5 out of 5 stars finally!!.......2006-09-06

I got an advance copy of this and having been playing it nonstop for 3 days, and waiting to be able to post a review, so without further ado...

Jucifer fans (like myself) have been waiting 5 years for another full-length, and I have to admit that on first listen... I was disappointed. 2001's Destroyer is, to me, their masterpiece, both musically and in the way it's put together, and this didn't live up to that. But as I've listened to it more and gotten over the original dismay, I do actually really like this CD. If I could give it 4 1/2 stars I would, but I can't and the first few tracks and my first impression keep me from giving it a 5. So let's go through song by song.

1. She Tides the Deep: 2/5. Why, why, WHY is this the first song? Slow, repetitive, pretty in places but 4 minutes too long, and why the hell would you start a CD with a 7-minute track? It's not a horrible song I guess, it was good for driving around at night listening to music, and it'd maybe be fine for an opener if it was shorter, but a lot of the time I skip this.

2. Centralia: 3/5. I remember this from a concert. It's okay, the main guitar pattern is kinda catchy, but again, really not something that belongs at the beginning of the CD. Especially not after Tides the Deep -- after 7 minutes of that, I want something faster. It was these two songs in the first listen that really made me almost give up hope for this CD.

3. Lucky Ones Burn: 5/5. This was what first started to redeem this CD for me. Faster, catchier, more fun -- which I know isn't what Jucifer is completely about, but it's something they CAN do and I desperately needed it after the first few tracks.
"some of us just rust, but the lucky ones burn"

4. Hennin Hardine: 5/5 This one's been out on Myspace for a couple of weeks so it's not as fresh to me... love the chorus though, uptempo and fairly happy (by their standards) with lyrics like "watch darkness bloom/here in my room" contrasting, and delicious crunchiness in the post-chorus bits.

5. Antietam: 4/5 This song? Creepy. As. Hell. Fairly obviously about the Civil War battle, which is neat. And I love the banjo bits. Only thing knocking this down are the vocals on the chorus -- they're obviously for effect, but they kind of wear on me. Amber can do a lot of awesome things with her voice, and this is nooooot one of them.

6. My Benefactor: 5/5 Lyrically I LOVE this -- there's an evolution to them, from trusting in the beginning to bitter by the end. And it's short. Which is good, because the sound doesn't change much in it, something that her vocals can redeem, but if this were 5 minutes instead of 2 1/2 it'd get old. As it is, though, it's a delicious little emotional and sonic morsel.

7. Four Suns: 4/5 The verses of this song really don't do much for me, they're ploddy and repetetive and just kinda dull, especially vocally. I'd give them a 3. But what I'd consider the chorus and the bridge absolutely blow me away, in lyrics and in sound -- poignant and beautiful. So it averages out to a 4... it starts iffy, but by the end of the song you've heard enough awesome that it's quite worthwhile.

8. Pontius of Palia: 4/5 The best way I can describe this is "catchy". I wasn't impressed by it on first listen, as structurally it's quite repetitive -- verse, verse, verse, verse, verse, come on guys, throw me a bridge here at least -- but then I found myself singing it to myself at work for 5 hours. So who knows.

9. Backslider: 6/5 Love. Love. LOVE. This song. Absolutely my favorite on the CD. Just... the guitars, the tempo and the tempo change, the lyrics....ohgod. My only complaint about this is that it ends WAY before I want it to.

10. Luchamos: 5/5 It's in Spanish, which I don't speak a word of. Not that that's a problem, I just can't quite.... connect to it. I love the abrupt sonic shift at the chorus -- something this CD doesn't do enough is change from soft to loud or vice-versa mid-song, and this song does that very awesomely. For some reason the chorus guitar crunch makes me think of Rammstein, which is odd, but hey.

11. Ludlow: 5/5 I like the quiet of the verses compared to the wall-of-sound crunch that functions as a chorus. This a very simple song, a little creepy and nice. I didn't notice it my first listen or two, but it's grown on me.

12. The Plastic Museum: 5/5 Pretty and simple (kind of like the people it's talking about, I suppose) and sad. And gorgeous. I can't quite describe why I love this song, but I do.

13. In a Family Way: 4/5 Not bad, at all, when I notice it, but I usually don't -- it's kind of a throwaway song. Very short. Kind of reminds me of the good bits of Four Suns, which may be why I don't notice it, because it's something I've kind of already heard. Plus I'm too eager to get to the next song.

14. Medicated: 6/5 My next favorite after Backslider. And I don't quite know why, but the acoustic bass makes me all happy, and I like the slow, then not-so-slow shift from quiet to loud that it goes through. This song is just.... gorgeous.

15. Led 4/5 Not bad. Pretty simple and dreamy... it's an excellent ending song.

Overall... I do love this CD. It starts off iffily, but give it a chance and it'll blow you away. Jucifer is an amazing band and this is a great CD. Like with Destroyer (although not to the same extent), the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, and the way the CD flows, even the songs that are weaker individually fall into place.

4 out of 5 stars The ultimate child star who managed to make it as an adult.......2001-06-18

As is so often in Hollywood, stars who become famous as children often don't find success when they grow up because audiences would prefer to remember them as the youthful symbols they once were. In music, I guess it's the same story. Some child stars like Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder manage to continue to make music as they get older, sometimes even better than what they created in their youth. Janis Ian should also fall into that category. Her song "Society's Child" was a hit song in 1967 when Janis was only 16. While it was a great song in its own right, the fact that it was banned by most radio stations for its interracial subject matter was enough to make Janis a celebrity before she graduated high school. Proving that she wasn't a shot in the dark, Janis continued making music after "Society's Child". But there were times when she couldn't cope with the fame and, at least twice in her career, has turned her back on it all to both live her life and hone her musical skills. She first came back in the mid-'70s with "At Seventeen", proving to be one of the most astonishing comebacks in music history. She again retired in the early '80s, this time staying out of the business for 12 years. She then returned in 1993 with BREAKING SILENCE, an album that dealt with the realization of her latent homosexuality. Once again, Janis Ian was praised like she was the next big thing in music. But perhaps her third go-round in music has been her most satisfying and permanent, for she's probably making some of her best music ever, and she's now in her 40s. 1997's HUNGER was a slight bump in the road to her '90s comeback, but not a devastating one as some have seemed to say. The reviews for this album have been mostly negative, saying it is too long or self-indulgent. In some cases on HUNGER, it's true, but those incidents are rare. Most of the album is of the what-you-hear-is-what-you-get quality, meaning there's hardly any production values and those looking for such may be disappointed with HUNGER. For the more open-minded, the bare-bones approach works in spades. Melancholy songs with titles to match like "Empty", "House Without A Heart", "On The Dark Side Of Town" and the title track could only have worked with a low-concept production like this. Too much sweetening would have made the songs sound too melodramatic at best. While regret may be the most prominent subject on HUNGER, the title emotion is also one that is more than present on here. "Welcome To Acousticville", "Searching For America" and "Honor Them All" all have Janis searching for something, be it freedom of expression ("Welcome"), feeling of belonging ("America") or family pride ("Honor"). The first two are often the reasons why people don't like HUNGER, because they think some of the songs could have been trimmed by a minute or two. But the rambling nature of such songs actually suits them wonderfully, and are reminiscent of the famous epic story-songs that Bob Dylan virtually invented. Not many people can create great music after over 30 years in the business, but Janis Ian has proven to be one of the few people that can. Maybe those sabbaticals she has taken from music before has helped her fine-tune her style into something so timeless, she could record well into her golden years if she wanted to. True, HUNGER may not be one of the best albums of her third time in the music business (the honesty of BREAKING SILENCE is almost irreplacable it seems), but Janis is one of those artists where even her least-inspired music is worth a listen. Her most recent album GOD & THE FBI has received some good reviews lately, so if anyone has recommendations for that one, I'd be glad to get them. In fact, I HUNGER for them.

5 out of 5 stars listen to this album! it's incredible..........2001-05-08

janis just gets better and better with each album. i became a fan with "between the lines" and have never regretted picking up one of her albums. her guitar work is magic! and she is definitely not afraid to voice her political opinion.

janis ian is a wonderful talent. this album is a mature tour de force and i highly recommend it.

fave track: getting over you

5 out of 5 stars I Hunger For More Janis Ian.......2001-04-22

Hunger is an exceptional album. Janis takes hold of you and doesn't let you go till the last chord fades on the last song.I then reach over and hit the play button and take the ride again. Be sure to listen to my favorite track "Welcome To Acousticville". It's just Janis and her acoustic guitar playing live, some of the best blues I've ever heard. This cut is how you would hear Janis in concert, just her and her guitar. That's all she really needs.I highly recomend Hunger. Janis Ian is remembered for "At Seventeen". If you haven't heard anything from her since then, you are missing a lot of great music.

4 out of 5 stars Satisfies the greatest hunger pains.......2000-04-08

Janis Ian's hunger is a stark, sparsely produced and stylish album with plenty of interesting melodic arrangements to satisfy fans and newcomers to her music alike. Many of these tracks seem almost "live in the studio" and instumentally "stripped to the bare bones" such as on the tunes "Empty" and "House Without A Heart." A highly-polished project with rich orchestrations did not seem to be high on the agenda here which adds beautifully to the urgency and immediacy of this work. "Searching for America" is without a doubt the album's centerpiece and masterpiece...a true work of art and genius which fascinates the listener more and more with each play. Ian is certainly "searching" for something here...and on tracks like "Welcome to Acousticville" one feels like he is wandering with her in the desert in search of something to quinch and satisfy a thirst and a great longing. "On the Dark Side of Town", a tale of chronic infidelity and hunger for intimacy, is another track that grows richer with each and every listen. The tracks are musically and lyrically haunting, full of need, desire and a longing to be satisfied. "Getting Over You" is the ubiquitous Ian ballad on the album, poignant and melancholy. Initially, I did not view this album as being as cohesive as her earlier efforts...but subsequent listenings have proved it to be extremely thematic and beautifully consistent and textural in its presentation. A good listen that becomes a great listen as it grows on you.

Album Description

This newly remastered reissue marks a welcome return to the catalog of the first volume of the classic 4-CD collection that was formerly available on the CRI label. The works recorded on this disc span the first six years of what Harry Partch (1901-1974), slightly tongue-in-cheek, called the "third period" of his creative life. They show him moving away from the obsession with "the intrinsic music of spoken words" that had characterized his earlier output (the vocal works of 1930-33 and 1941-45) and towards an instrumental idiom, predominantly percussive in nature. This path was to take him through the "music-dance drama" King Oedipus (1951)—-the culmination of his "spoken word" manner—to the "dance satire" The Bewitched (1954-55), in which his new percussive idiom manifests itself. The three works on this disc show Partch before, during, and after this period of transition. In their quiet, forlorn way, the Eleven Intrusions are among the most compelling and beautiful of Partch's works. The individual pieces were composed at various times between August 1949 and December 1950, and only later gathered together as a cycle. Nonetheless they form a unified whole, with a nucleus of eight songs framed by two instrumental preludes and an essentially instrumental postlude. Although foreshadowed by the dance sequences of King Oedipus, the Plectra and Percussion Dances (1952) are the first of Partch's major works to be wholly instrumental in conception. They stand in relation to Oedipus as a satyr play in relation to a Greek tragedy—hence the work's subtitle, "Satyr-Play Music for Dance Theater." He felt that after the prolonged period of composition and production of Oedipus it was "almost a necessity to give vent to feelings and ideas, whims and caprices, even nonsense, that seem to have no place in tragedy." The final work on this disc is Ulysses at the Edge, written at Partch's studio at Gate 5 in July 1955. Ulysses, which Partch describes as a "minor adventure in rhythm," is unique among his mature compositions in that, in its original form, it did not call for any of his own instruments. The version recorded here, for alto and baritone saxophones, Diamond Marimba, Boo, Cloud-Chamber Bowls, and speaking voice, is considered the third version of the piece.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Now it's possible to get your Partch all in a row.......2006-02-20

Harry Partch is the quintissential mad genius of music--his image of music that was non-Eurocentric led to him devising his own tonal scale based on ancient Greek and Asian methods and then creating his own instruments. This series release of Partch music lets one organize his Partch tastes and get a real sense of his progress through time. This disc is superb for the Intrusions, ghostly little pieces that were my first introduction to this fine composer. I would also highly recommend volume 3, which has Barstow, one of my favorite Partch pieces.

Be prepared. This is classical music you have not been prepared for. If you're already a fan of Partch, aren't you glad SOMEONE is getting all his amazing stuff together in one tightly knit package?
