From the Label
A return to the recording studio by Babatunde Olatunji, the Nigerian percussion virtuoso whose 1959 album, DRUMS OF PASSION, first opened American ears to the power and spirituality of Nigerian music. Originally released in 1986 as DANCE TO THE BEAT OF MY DRUM on the now-defunct Blue Heron label, the album features such guest players as master Brazilian percussionist Airto Moriera and noted rock guitarist Carlos Santana. The Olatunji tune "Jingo" was Santana's first single in 1969; three tracks on THE BEAT feature his trademark guitar soaring against the thunderous backing of Olatunji and his troupe of percussionists.

The album is Olatunji's tribute to the power of rhythm. As he puts it, "Rhythm is the soul of life. The whole universe revolves in rhythm. Everything and every human action revolves in rhythm." This is also Olatunji's first recording with producer Mickey Hart, who took some of his first inspiration from Olatunji's work and released this album as part of his series "The World."

5 out of 5 stars The best cd of it's kind.......2005-08-16

It is quite a claim to report that this is "the best cd of it's kind" and a healthy dose of subjectivity goes into that opinion. Some great drumming to be found here.

3 out of 5 stars Nice World Music Cd.......1999-12-21

The drums on this cd are very, very impressive, but on many of the songs the vocals aren't that great. I'd rather hear them chant in an african language instead of switching between english and the african language. Carlos Santana's guitar playing also really adds to a couple of songs on this album. I'd rather recommend Planet Drum than this album.

5 out of 5 stars This album was the start of something special.......1999-05-31

Babatunde Olatunji's album "Drums of Passion:The beat" is African songs, mixed with Western Music. You will find to some of the greatests drummers from africa on this CD, and also find to the world famous Carlos Santana playing with them. Olatunji made a great impact on Afro-pop. He was one of the first people to Mix the music of Africa and America. If you are interested in African Music, this is a must by.

5 out of 5 stars "OM".......1998-07-02

This album is righteous energy, energy, energy! I had seen him live, he is a saint. Amen "OM" and Praise the power of a drum! Put drums in childrens hands- Not Guns!

5 out of 5 stars Forget anti-depressants and multi-vitamins!.......1998-05-23

This album is so full of get-up-and-dance-energy you could clean your whole darn house while you flit around in rhythm. Babatunde is beyond the master he is called, and this album is pure mastery. You feel better and more appreciative of life with each song, even if you can't understand the lyrics.

"Akiwowo" is in particular a feel good song you will remember like a really good jingle, regardless of how long ago you heard the tune.

If you are a fan of African music and drumming, and by some extremely odd chance have not heard of this album, the time is now!

I personally know luis garay because he taught my brother how to play drums in washington, d.c. (his drum school location). His CD is great and the live performances are even better.
