Year of the Dog
Year of the Dog
Editorial Reviews

Originally a traditional folk-dance ensemble, Wolfstone have evolved into a Celtic-rock band along the lines of the Waterboys. By blending the ancient Scottish instruments of the fiddle and bagpipe with electric guitar, electric bass, and a full drum kit, Wolfstone have managed to add a new kick to an old tradition on their album Year of the Dog.
Silly Wizard's Phil Cunningham, who produced the album and added some accordion, helped Wolfstone retain the springy lilt of Celtic dance music even as they added more power to their punch. Unfortunately, the impact of this hybrid sound is at times blunted by the overreaching songwriting of singer Ivan Drever and fiddler Dave Chisholm, who too often adopt the unfocused bombast of such prog-rock bands as Yes and Jethro Tull. On Drever's rousing political anthem, "The Brave Foot Soldiers," however, and on Cunningham's lively instrumental medley, "The Double Rise," Wolfstone display the potential to cross over from folk to pop--and back again. --Geoffrey Himes

This is the same s*** from years ago.......2007-02-23
Bein' a fan of DMX, this is hard for me to do. This is the generic music DMX has been puttin' out since back in the day. he hasn't changed a bit, and the topics and music are all the same as on his last albums. This s*** was bangin' ten years ago. That's a long time to be makin' the same music. Come on X, shift out of neutral.
Magnificent.......2007-01-12
When I received this cd, I really enjoyed listening to it and I also play it every minute that I have. DMX is the bomb, he is a good rapper and when he speaks he is telling the truth.
Another good CD by DMX.......2007-01-03
If you like his other albums/music then you will definitely be pleased with this cd which features many other great artists. I also enjoyed the dvd that came with this album.
The Only Rapper Who Can Make Raps About God Slammin..........2006-11-20
4 1/2 Stars..... Still Shinin.... I didnt actually think DMX would retire and im definately glad he's back. As with most of DMXs CDs its hard to say how good it is until I listen to it about 5 times from beginning to end. His rhythm definately grows on me with each listen. I can honstly say this is one of his best CDs and considering its his 6th album that just shows how solid he is. Its loaded with good tracks and the only 2 Im not really feeling is Baby Motha and Dog Love but they arent that bad either. DMX sells himself well, he comes straight from his heart with no BS, he's consistant and I believe he is what he portrays and thats why his formula works!
How this is averagin 4.5 is beyond me.......2006-11-14
Well actually I know the reason why the average is so high. Cause beats, hooks and simple punch lines is what sells records now.It would be completely unfair to give this album a 1, but 5's and 4's is highly exaggerated. I really tried to like this album. I listened to it again before I dropped this short review. The standout tracks is the featured ones. To me, X can't hold his own alone. He is not kickin it the same. Dude is mentally stuck in the same mode he was in years ago. Rehashin lyrics and wastin good beats with growls, barks, and a whole lotta cursin. I know its unfair to compare this to his earlier work. Thats like asking Nas to do Illmatic again, but that's when X was serious lyrical. But this dude hasn't evolved. The beats is the only thing that shines. If you looking for somethin to bang out in the whip then this is for you. Some advice X; If you want to continue thinking your the best, then don't surround yourself around lyricist who's better than you.

Album Description
"They had a piano in every house, every beer garden here. You could hear music all over Cincinnati back then." -Big Joe Duskin
Blues and boogie pianist Big Joe Duskin is one of the last of the blues' Greatest Generation, the men and women who created the music in the years before World War II, blazing the path for every blues and blues-rock musician to follow.
Although Duskin's Arhoolie release "Cincinnati Stomp" was an instant classic in 1979, it's been over a decade since his last studio recording. This "comeback release" session pairs him with stellar sidemen Phillip Paul, drummer on over 350 sides for King Records, and bassist Ed Conley, also a King veteran. British rock guitar great Peter Frampton lends searing solos to a pair of tracks, as does William Lee Ellis.
Beautifully packaged, with extensive liner notes and a special narrative track, this recording is meant to capture the classic Cincinnati blues sound before it's lost forever.

Outstanding.......2005-06-07
For the first time in a long time, I have just played straight through a CD (this CD) three times in the same sitting. This CD is thoroughly enjoyable, both musically and sonically (i.e., it is very well recorded). I think many people will like this music even if they generally aren't great blues fans (in the way that many people like Ray Charles but don't necessarily like other artists of the same genre). This is simply great music that just happens to be blues. This music has great bounce, rhythm and texture to it, but it's not over-loud and "electrified." At the risk of going overboard here, this might be my new favorite blues disc.
Yellow Dog Records Has a Real Winner With This One!.......2004-09-21
As a jazz fan, I usually only like blues in small doses, but "Big Joe Jumps Again!" caught my attention with the first track, "You're Gonna Miss Me," and kept me all the way through to "Just a Closer Walk With Thee," the final tune. And then I went back and played it again. Big Joe Duskin does a number of tunes Joe Williams sang, but he does them in his own wonderful style. Ann Rabson, an East Coast blues expert whom I don't know, said it better than I can in her review for amazon.com. Suffice to say that a jazz guy from the Southwest agrees with her. Thanks to Yellow Dog Records for this real blues treasure!
Big Joe Jumps Again!.......2004-09-09
There's a wonderful new recording which is a real delight for those
of us who love down-home blues piano playing and singing. It's the
latest by the shamefully under-recorded blues shouter and
powerhouse of the 88s Mr. Big Joe Duskin. It's "Big Joe Jumps
Again," Yellow Dog Records YDR 1133.
There's nothing artificial or overly polished about Joe's style.
It can be gentle or hard-driving, but it always feels completely
natural.
Even though Joe is a true original I can hear echoes of blues
history in his playing. This is a man who has obviously been a
listener as well as a player.
The recording starts with a short snippet of a rocking version of
Lowell Fulson's "You're Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone." One of my
only complaints about this recording is that it includes several
short pieces like this that end abruptly. Just when I get into
them, WHAM! they're over. That's also the case with "Down the Road
a Piece" and "Just a Closer Walk with Thee." I find this
frustrating. I want to hear MORE! Fortunately there's a longer
version of "You're Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone" later in the
recording, with a very different groove - kind of a slow "Linda
Lou" shuffle. "North To Alaska," yes, that Johnny Horton song, is
another of those snippets, but it's worth a little frustration to
hear it arranged as a boogie woogie!
I was really delighted by Peter Frampton's soulful and sympathetic
accompaniments of Joe on "Every Day I Have the Blues" and "Key to
the Highway." It just shows that my prejudice against rockers is
as off the mark as most prejudices prove to be. These cuts show a
fine blues sensibility. Really a treat.
The other backing musicians do a terrific job of supporting Joe.
They never dilute what makes his music special, which is a common
pitfall for musicians backing an inventive artist. Great job,
fellows. The "Black Mountain Blues" track features vocals by
Bessie Smith-influenced Shawna Snyder. This cut allows us to see
that Joe is an excellent accompanist, a role which, in my opinion,
requires even greater skill and sensitivity than being the star.
Roosevelt Sykes' love song to "Miss Ida B" and his vengeful "Get
Out of My Way," as well as that old tale of "Betty and Dupree," are
told with such a traditional feel that I forget it's the 21st
century.
"Black Rat Swing" by Memphis Minnie (and, I believe, one of her
husbands named Joe) turns up here renamed "One Dirty Rat." Joe has
put his own very original stamp on this tune, bringing to it a
groove that suggests a funky version of Brother Ray's "What'd I
Say." Very, very cool!
Joe's own composition "Mean and Strange" is a very effective lament
about a love gone wrong. His singing reminds me of what first
appealed to me about the blues: that bewildered, wronged, lost and
lonely thing. Even the piano part feels that way to me.
"Sloppy Drunk Blues" is a tune I love. So many great artists have
performed this gem, including Lucille Bogan, Leroy Carr John "Sonny
Boy" Williamson, Jimmy Rogers and so many more. Joe's version is
certainly one of my favorites.
Like so many bluesmen I've known from his generation, Joe is a
wonderful storyteller. The cut "The Preacher and the Devil's
Music" represents that side of Joe.
I highly recommend that you catch Joe live, telling his stories and
making his music with power and grace. I think Joe is a gem, a
real deep and original bluesman. This fine recording captures his
magic and will bring joy and pleasure to any lover of the blues.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Kati Szvorak and Teka take a folk tour of Hungary.......2002-12-24
This CD is a treasure trove of folk music from Hungary - NOT just children's songs. Great playing by Teka, vocals by Kati Szvorak. There are some vocals by non-adults, but are done well, not whiny or cutsey. Songs from practically every region of (greater)Hungary - Dunantul, Mezoseg, Moldva, Zobor - arranged in sections by "purpose" - wedding,Carnival, etc. For instance, in the dance section you get a great Dunantuli set. I originally purchased this because it has some Christmas songs on it. It also has a wonderful name-calling/taunting song - "S a te fejed akkora..." If you like Marta Sebestyen, Sebo, etc, you will like this CD. It's also a great introduction to Hungarian Folk music. Enjoy.

Yikes........2003-12-12
I have most of Wolfstone's cds, I got into them while still in High School (about 7 years ago). Since then, my tastes have changed considerably. If you were to have me review this cd back then, I still would have been very disappointed in it, and I really liked classic rock.
What's wrong with it? PLENTY. The most distressing thing to me, hands down were the terrible, terrible, TERRIBLE lyrics. I'm not an English major or anything, but I think we can all agree that a synthesizer driven song about the KKK ("white gown") seems extremely out of place and completely inappropriate (and the final results are disasterous).
The guitar is mainly put in to give it that "rock" sound that they were supposed to have, but fell short of for this album. These guys need to lose their producer, it's too slick. . .they'd sound better if I recorded them in my room with my 4-track; less cheesy at any rate.
To sum up: Wolfstone's instrumental work is vastly superior to the songs where that creepy looking guy sings (exceptions being a few songs on unleashed and the chase), and this is especially true of this album.
A good offering from a Celtic FOLK Rock band!.......2003-05-28
(4.5 stars actually) This Wolfstone disc shows a marked change in style from the more Rock edged Celtic stuff of their first two discs, with a return to their folkier roots...still though, it has power and rocks...the songwriting and playing is stronge...this one is actually one of my favs - worth checking out!...
Dog.......2002-05-16
This album would more appropriaely be titled "Dog". On the back of the CD it says "file under Celtic Rock." It SHOULD say "file under New Age Elevator Music" (on a copy of this CD I had obtained from the library, someone wrote on it "Bad New Age" which is a perfect description). This resembles "Celtic Rock" about as much as Barry Manilow resembles Led Zeppelin. First, for an album purporting to "rock", the guitar is badly undermixed so as to render its impact impotent. Most disappointingly, the problem I have with this CD is the same problem I have with much of Wolfstone's music: they seem to have become obsessed with a soft-airy-modern-jazz-New-Age-synthesizer-elevator-music sound which is way overused and dominates much too often. Their formula for "modernizing" folk music seems to be to add occasional electric guitar and this almost constant, cheesy, fogey, annoying synthesizer sound. Resultingly, much of their catalogue is unlistenable. The only song on this CD which has any potential at all is "Sea King", which sounds like it is going to build up to something grand and powerful - but then there's no payoff; it simply and disappointingly just ends. The best Wolfstone album by far is their first one, "Unleashed", where the New-Age hokum is kept to a minimum and resultingly there are some phenomonal songs. Their second album, The Chase" is pretty good in spots but that awful synthesizer sound creeps in more and more. "Dog" is their third album and is totally dominated by the fogey sound, which overpowers all the other instruments. The rockier songs on "Half Tail" are quite good, as well as the folkier songs which keep the newfound toy to a minimum. Overall, Wolfstone is definitely a mixed bag - if you could take all the Wolfstone songs without this hokey elevator-music synthesizer sound, you would have a pretty good collection, but you would have to buy all their CDs and pick and choose the few safe songs from each CD to do this; a costly endeavor indeed. Much of Wolfstone's music could be sold to supermarket chains throughout Scotland for shoppers to listen to while doing their grocery shopping. Oh well, at least Wolfstone doesn't use that awful programmed-synthesized-fake-drum-beat-sound that so many others in this genre use to try to "modernize" folk music...

This CD was my first exposure to Wolfstone a few years ago. Just purchased it again, as I loaned it out and it never came back...which is a good thing :o). Wolfstone's use of fiddle, pipes, and electric gutiar is wonderful. White Gown...what can one say? Powerful lyrics are Wolfstone's strength.......into Celtic music? This is a MUST have.....
