The options where Nick Drake is concerned are limited, but wholly appealing. The downhearted singer-songwriter released only three albums in his 26 years; the posthumous rarities collection, Time of No Reply, rounds out his abbreviated oeuvre. The whole lot is contained in the exemplary four-disc Fruit Tree box set. Way to Blue is a scaled-back option for those who are enchanted by Drake's intricate yet cozy lamentations, but feel no need to join the ever-growing legion of Drake completists. But while the 16 songs included here provide a fine introduction to the ill-fated Englishman's work (which seems to fit together no matter how it's sequenced), Drake is one of those rare artists whose entire catalog is worth owning due to its excellence and, sadly, its brevity. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Set!.......2007-07-01

I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!

5 out of 5 stars Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03

This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?

4 out of 5 stars Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11

Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.

Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).

Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".

It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.

But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

4 out of 5 stars Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22

It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

4 out of 5 stars Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31

Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.

However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.

Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

5 out of 5 stars One word--LIFESAVER.......2005-10-04

I live in a very noisy dormatory and often have trouble falling asleep. I've found that this disc, with its relaxing pieces, is able to calm me enough that I can get a decent amount of rest each night.

I'm not saying the songs on here are boring, though. They are well-performed. Many of them were familiar to me before I first played this disc, others were not. I am very diverse in my musical tastes and appreciate this music. However, the relaxation value one gets from a CD like this one is much more than one could expect from a band like Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, The Police, or Crash Test Dummies to name a few.

Even if you don't live in a noisy dorm this is a good CD to relax to. It's also good dinner music and is perfect for when that special sweetie is in your car with you en route to a five star restaraunt. (Hopefully it comes on cassette so I can play it in my car, too!)

Richard Clayderman also has put out numerous other albums. One that I have been unable to find in CD but have on LP record is "A Romantic Christmas", which includes many great piano arrangments of popular Christmas songs including arguably the best version of "Silver Bells" I've ever heard, including all the ones with vocals that have passed through my ears over my lifetime.

5 out of 5 stars Richard Clayderman Admiration Society.......2005-08-16

Richard Clayderman first came to my attention in the early 1970's when I used to spend a lot of time in Europe on business. He has a very distinctive piano style when playing either classical or popular. His backup band for popular music, including excellent drums, tuba, violins and more, is very good.

This particular album, if you like classical music played with a flair, is excellent; so good, in fact, that I am buying additional copies for special people.

And, yes, I am well over the age of 13.

1 out of 5 stars Not THAT bad,but..........2005-05-23

Let's just say that even if I really dislike Clayderman,I have never underated his pianistic talents.I borrowed this CD from a friend and was surprised that the pianist famous with performances of mundane pop songs is able to fit into the demands of some really serious classical masterpieces such as the Tchai 1 or the Rach 2.However,JUST AS I PREDICTED,Clayderman would not play these masterpieces in their entirety. For a serious classical music fan, excerpts would never be of much value. It would be really stupid to compare Clayderman's performance of the great concertos with the other 'greats' such as Cliburn,Zimerman or Argerich, but some passages in Clayderman's performance really seem cheesy to me.This is an album which might be an option for beginners of classical music. But a 'professional' classical music fan really needs much more than any performance of a work.

2 out of 5 stars Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1.......2002-11-16

I am --------, and I have played Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1. An expressive work which requires great passions, Clayderman has often been too loud, breaking the melodious balance between the orchestra and the piano. I was tuned off already by the first few chords, which were struck too loudly. There also lacks a element of surprise and Russian animosity in this recording, which Jorge Bolet and Evgeny Kissin both capture in their recordings with Dutoit and Karajan, respectively.

5 out of 5 stars The Peak Of Romantic Classics.......2002-01-11

While Richard Clayderman is not well known in the USA, his work is commonplace in South Africa and Europe. I enjoyed the original LP version of this CD as a 8 year old and through the wonders of e-commerce have been able to track the CD down. I loved his rendition of Beethoven's work so much that I used the music for the bridal march at my wedding.Definately worth the ten bucks if you're a Romantic Classic nut.

5 out of 5 stars A Musical Treat.......2006-01-08

"The true mission of the violin is to imitate the accents of the human voice, a noble mission that has earned for the violin the glory of being called the king of instruments." ~ Charles-Auguste De Bériot ~

Yehudi Menuhin and Stéphane Grapelli together had made some of the most beautiful music ever-recorded. And I believe that this is one of the many successful albums they recorded together. In this recording, both violinists have showed their excellent musicianship and interpretative eloquence as well, making it one of my most cherished CDs from my collection.

These are the main ingredients of a perfectly-made CD for your listening pleasure: mix violins, piano, bass and drums together, combine two terrific violinists, season with the best melodies in the 20s, 30s and 40s from Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter and Rodgers & Hart. Add the musical talents of Nelson Riddle, Max Harris, Martin Taylor, Eddie Tripp, Alan Clare and the rest of the studio musicians. Now all you have to do is to sit back, relax and savor these stunning melodies coming from your CD player. Listen to it in full-volume and fill your music room with the sheer beauty of these classics.

One of my favorite musical instruments is violin. With its four strings, it gives a whole wide range of musical versatility and I simply love the fascinating sound it produces.

My personal highlights are the best tunes from Jerome Kern - "The Way You Look Tonight" (Nelson Riddle arranged this particular track and conducted the Woodwind and Brass section), "A Fine Romance," "Pick Yourself Up," "Why Do I Love You?" and "All The Things You Are."

My choices from Irving Berlin's gems are - "Isn't It A Lovely Day?" featuring the great artistry of Nelson Riddle in arranging and conducting, "Cheek To Cheek" and "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm."

The Cole Porter repertoire represented his musical sophistication in "Night And Day," "I Get A Kick Out Of You" and "Just One Of Those Things."

The choice cuts from the talented and creative team of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart are "My Funny Valentine" and "Thou Swell."

Listening to this CD is so delectable and equivalent to having my favorite dessert - be it Tiramisu, New York Cheesecake, Black Forest Cake, Chocolate Soufflé, Créme Brulee, Chocolate Mousse or Chocolate-Coated Strawberries! ;)

A musical treat.

5 out of 5 stars Drake's Blue, Blue Way.......2007-03-28

"Way to Blue: An Introduction To Nick Drake" has the power to mollify a full-blown manic attack that a psychiatrist can only dream of with lithium in several weeks. The guitar picking is sublime and sure-handed, the vocals ethereal, the lyrics complex in a simple manner; music that speaks to the soul's suffering. The collection is a best of that culls 16 tracks from the three records ("Five Leaves Left," 1969; "Bryter Layter," 1970; "Pink Moon," 1972) produced during his brief life (1948 - 1974).

Besides an acoustic guitar, instruments such as the cello, bass, drums, piano and congas accompany Drake's reserved singing that infuses the album with a delicate but strong presence. However, Drake was shy about performing live, giving interviews, and suffered from depression; all hurt his chances of getting any proper notice, which he never received during his lifetime. In fact, an interesting tidbit is no moving images of Drake exists, only still photographs. The lyrics of "Fruit Tree" seem prophetic in retrospect: "Fruit tree Fruit tree/ No-one knows you but the rain and the air./ Don't you worry/ They'll stand and stare when you're gone."

To say the tracks are haunting is underestimating the album. Grief oozes while any sense of joy will have to be carefully searched for as it hides in the album's looming shadows. Having studied English literature at Cambridge (left nine months before graduating) provided Drake a way to explore themes of loss and grieving with nature's elements: seasons, stars, moon, sun, river, sky. In "Time Of No Reply" Drake aches, "Summer was gone and the heat died down,/ And Autumn reached for her golden crown,/ I looked behind as I heard a sigh,/ But this was the time of no reply."

These compositions appear to be cut directly from Drake's troubled soul; if sadness and tears could be planted, a thousand fields of melancholy roses with eager thorns would bloom. "The Birth of Tragedy" by Friedrich Nietzsche closes with the philosopher stating, "how much must these people have suffered in order to be able to become so beautiful!" After listening to Drake you could hardly disagree with Nietzsche's conclusion. Fortunately, music fans have found the beauty as Drake predicted from "Time has told me." "Time has told me/ You're a rare rare find/ A troubled cure/ For a troubled mind./ And time has told me/ Not to ask for more/ Someday our ocean/ Will find its shore."

Bohdan Kot

"Legal disclaimer: the first sentence of the review is hyperbole, not to be taken literally, but used to entertain the reader. The album is not recommended for periods of extended listening or for any period of time during the wintertime for those prone to depression."

5 out of 5 stars You owe it to youself to love Nick Drake.......2006-12-11

Haunting and beautiful. Take this CD and listen to it while going for a walk through your neighborhood.

Nick Drake is one of those unfortunate artists who dies before anyone bothers to appreciate his brilliance.

But since he was in fact left to his own devices in near obscurity, he stays rather pure and original and untainted and beautiful.

You owe it to yourself to love Nick Drake.

No other pretty boy singer songwriter of this day and age can touch him.

5 out of 5 stars 10 Stars with a tragic ending.......2006-07-30

After hearing this CD from a friend (ironically, thanks Nick), I too needed more from Nick Drake. Get the Fruit Tree boxed set, please. Nick has so much more to offer. It's just a tragedy that artists such as Nick Drake and Tommy Bolin faced such an early demise. A real shame.

5 out of 5 stars Way too blue.......2006-01-23

"And if one day you should see me in the crowd/Lend a hand and lift me/To your place in the cloud," Nick Drake sings dreamily against a backdrop of cello and congas. Talk about prophetic. The tragic singer-songwriter, who was only in his late 20s when he overdosed on sleeping pills, left behind an all-too-small collection of exquisite music.

"Way To Blue: An Introduction" serves both as an intro to his poignant folk music, and also as a sort of "Best of" collection. This album contains selections from his four albums "Pink Moon," "Five Leaves Left," "Bryter Layter," and "Time of No Reply," and these selections are arguably the best of Drake's bittersweet music.

Drake generally stuck to the folk sound -- lots of acoustic guitar and laid-back bass, sometimes dressed up with piano. But he twiddled with that sound in a few songs; the ethereal "Northern Sky" is swathed in organ, piano and celeste, raising it above the average folk song.

What all these songs have in common is a loneliness, a poignancy, and a beauty that is truly heartrending. Drake suffered from depression during his short life, which may explain the tone of songs like the sweet "Time of No Reply," in which he sings sadly, "The time of no reply is calling me to stay/There is no hello and no goodbye/To leave there is no way."

In other songs, Drake describes the fickleness of his fame, the loneliness of his life, and hopes to "forget this cruel world." But also seems to have a kind of optimism about love, which sounds all the more poignant in his smooth vocals. Drake's singing sounds unpolished by computers, making its husky sweetness even more striking.

Long after his death, Nick Drake's bittersweet music lingers on. "Way To Blue: An Introduction" is both an excellent collection of his best songs, and a good introduction to his work.

5 out of 5 stars A Sonic Van Gough.......2002-09-15

How could one possibly put their feelings about Van Gough's Starry Night into words? It can't be done. Nick Drake is rather like a Van Gough for your ears. I just can't put the impact of his music into words. I've been buying records since I was 14 and I'm now 47 years old. This is one of the best purchases I've ever made. My collection includes works by John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Ralph Towner, The Beatles, King Crimson, Dave Matthews, Van Morrison, Eric Dolphy etc. In other words, I'm a prolific listener with varied tastes and as a musician, I know real art when I hear it. The closest I've heard musically to Drake's style would be John Martyn, Bert Jansch, Fairport Convention, that sort of thing... Only this is better. This music is haunting and, if you have any soul, it will expose things you never even realized were within you.

If you have enough pennies to buy only one CD this year, this is it. Warning: Way to Blue will leaving you hungering for more and there are only 4 CDs available from Mr Drake who flew from this world at the tender (but some how ripe) age of 26 years.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Recordings of George Gershwin's Piano Improvisations.......2006-08-09

This low priced CD is the greatest presentation of George Gershwin's incredible improvisational skill, reworking his popular hits of the day into complex arrangements that can hold the interest of the 'most discriminating music lover.' These disc recordings are much more lifelike than the well known piano-roll CDs. On this Cd Gershwin's filled-in tenth cords in his left hand along with his consecutive four-note chord spreads to the octave with his right, cross rhythms, and virtuoso embellishments give the piano arrangements a full sound. The recording of 'Swanee' is a small 1919 group recording of the Van Eps Quartet with a young George Gershwin at the piano and Nathan Glantz on the saxaphone. The Van Eps Quartet plays in a yiddish sounding style which accents Swanee's rooting in yiddish music. The next recordings are of George Gershwin at the piano recorded in 1926 and 1928. This CD also includes the 1924 Paul Whiteman orchestra recording of 'Rhapsody in Blue' with the composer at the piano. The arrangement was shortened to about 9 minutes in order to fit onto the two sides of a 78rmp record, but I think this is the best recording of 'Rhapsody in Blue' ever recorded, because this was recorded when 'Rhapsody in Blue' was New, Exciting, and Full of Life. This recording lets the humor that was originally intended by Gershwin shine through. His own recording of his three preludes is the best rendition of the popular preludes. Gershwin stands as the best performer of his own works, and this CD is the best example of his own playing. The improvisations of his show tunes on this CD are much more fleshed out than his brief radio recordings available elsewhere, although I recommend trying to find all of his recordings. Gershwin's solo piano arrangement of the Andante section of Rhapsody in Blue is another opportunity to hear George play his own material. The last recording on the disc is a 1931 rehersal of 'Second Rhapsody' which George Gershwin had recorded onto disc by NBC for him to listen to. Once again, George Gershwin is the best interpreter of his own works, and this CD is the best document of Gershwin playing Gershwin.

3 out of 5 stars These are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks.......2007-01-21

I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25

This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.

3 out of 5 stars The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18

While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!

5 out of 5 stars "many were winners by the Academy for best scores".......2004-05-26

Silva America presents the essential in film music during the period of World Wars ~ "Longest Day:Ultimate World War Movie Theme", featuring some long forgotten cues, 53 to be exact that sent chills and thrills into the pulses of world events ~ selections from a limited collectors edition that would make any "film-score-buff" green with envy.

Released to commemorate the sixth Anniversary of D-Day, never has there ever been such a tribute compilation package from any other label and Silva comes to the forefront ~ featuring The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra (Paul Bateman, Nic Raine Tony Bremner and Carl Davis as conductors), The Philharmonia (Kenneth Alwyn, Jerry Goldsmith, Mario Klemens and Paul Bateman as conductors) and also the world renown Crouch End Festival Chorus (David Temple as choir master) ~ what a gathering of talented musicians and singers fill this collection supreme.

The lineup of composers is a Who's Who in the world of film music ~ John Addison, Tomaso Albinoni, Kenneth J. Alford, Paul Anka, John Barry, Arnold Bax, Elmer Bernstein, Eric Coates, Carl Davis, Klaus Doldinger, Antonin Dvorak, Benjamin Frankel, Gerald Fried, Hugo Friedhofer, Jerry Goldsmith, Ron Goodwin, Bernard Herrmann, Maurice Jarre, Michael Kamen, Jerome Moross, Alfred Newman, Clifton Parker, Alan Rawsthorne, Ryvichi Sakamoto, Lalo Schifrin, Gerard Schurmann, David Shire, Max Steiner, Dimitri Tiomkin, Ralph Vaughan Williams, John Williams, Gabriel Yared and Hans Zimmer ~ set the stage for compositional human drama while exploring the deepest troves of musical emotion ~ one masterpiece after another, each cue manages to display both a convincing authenticity of the times and places ~ experience every tracks passion and skill for striking the exotic orchestral colors, explosive power and spectacular works of full large scale orchestral arrangements previal at every turn.

We are grateful to James Fitzpatrick (producer), Reybnold da Silva (executive producer), Rick Clark (associate producer/album sequence), Marion Garden (associate producer) and the whole gang at Silva America who have resurrected many of the soundtracks for the "film-score-buffs" in all of us.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars extremely poor re-mastering.......2004-12-21

I listen to many (re-mastered) historical recordings. Jeanette MacDonald is certainly one of my most favorite sopranos. For some reason, I haven't been able to find a decent, or even acceptable, re-mastering of her recordings.

While this one certainly contains many valuable tracks, the re-mastering is horrid. The songs sound stripped yet still maintain a great deal of distracting noise. I conjecture that the re-mastering was done simply by increasing the bass and decreasing the treble.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent CD!.......2004-03-29

This is an excellent collection of the Screen Sweethearts of the 30's, Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald, *not* singing together, in the 40's (except for a few of Jeanette's songs).

For Jeanette, it has numbers from Up In Central Park: Carousel in the Park, It Doesn't Cost You Anything to Dream, Close as Pages in a Book, Fireman's Bride, The Big Back Yard, When You Walk in the Room. She and Robert Merrill sing these together and on their own, and very charmingly, too. There are also Love Me Tonight, Isn't It Romantic, and Beyond the Blue Horizon.

For Nelson, he sings music from The Student Prince with Rise Stevens: Golden Days, Drinking Song, Deep in my Heart Dear, Serenade (which is BEAUTIFUL!), Just We Two, and Come Boys. He also sings all the songs from Northwest Outpost - thankfully, without Ilona Massey! Also, the Willie the Whale segment from Make Mine Music is on this CD - just as it is in the movie, with the narration and everything - it's great! (The Tristan und Isolde part is not included, however - not sure what the reasoning is behind that.) He also sings a duet with Jane Powell - Why Do I Love You? from Show Boat.

I say this is a must for fans of Nelson and/or Jeanette, not to mention Rise Stevens!

I particularly enjoy "When You Walk in the Room". It's a charming little tune, with ridiculous but adorable lyrics! "Fireman's Bride" is very funny also - Jeanette barely sounds like herself!

I hope this will help others to choose this CD - it's a pity there's not a list of the titles here!

4 out of 5 stars Nelson Eddy on CD - always a pleasure.......1998-08-30

It's always a pleasure to find Nelson Eddy's wonderful voice on CD and this one has some of the harder-to-find pieces in it, including collaborations with Jane Powell and the wonderful mezzo Rise Stevens. The recording of "The Whale Who Sang at the Met" is a must for any collector as are the excellent recordings (better than on the movie) for "Northwest Outpost". The baritone singing opposite Jeanette MacDonald also has an excellent voice (though his name temporarily escapes me)

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Album, but No Vocal Fireworks.......2005-09-20

This is a beautfully rendered album and Joni's voice is pitch perfect. She sings every note as written. But she takes no interpretive chances and there's no vocal fireworks. The real accomplishment here are the splendid arrangements by Jeffrey Osborne and Geoff Love - two men who never met a huge orchestra they didn't like. The lush, layered arrangements are spectacular. The musicians are also first rate and for such a large gathering there's a fantastic cohesiveness. Though her singing is pleasant enough, Joni's voice is basically the 101st instrument in the entire ensemble.

5 out of 5 stars Great Standards!!.......2003-02-15

This is a great album of classic standards with lush orchestrations. Joni's voice is incredibly smooth and expressive and the selections are some of the best of the Jerome Kern era of classic songwriters. My favorite is Imagination. Best version I have ever heard...as a matter of fact many of the tunes are my benchmark arrangements. If you are a fan of the 30's-50's classic love songs and ballads, this is for you!! Great for Valentines Day. Romantic stuff. This was one of my favorite albums on vinyl as a kid. Now I can get the CD. Yeah!

5 out of 5 stars Joni James at Abbey Road!.......2002-07-23

Miss Joni James swept away on a veritable ocean of violins!
This classic LP remastered in pristine sound with tender torch tunes rendered "close to the microphone" by one of the 1950s most popular singing icons. Recorded in London at the famous Abbey Road studios with those lush, sweeping Acquaviva arrangements. Joni's most divine moment! (Tacked on to the original album are 6 tracks, also with the 100 Strings orchestra, of songs from her Jimmy McHugh tribute LP.)
