Album Description
This first collaboration CD from acoustic guitarist Michael Mandrell and multi-instrumentalist Benjy Wertheimer is a mythic instrumental journey. As a "Yoga Meditations" soundtrack, the album transports the listener into both the faraway lands of ancient India - through the soulful sounds of the esraj, tamboura and tabla - and the mystical Celtic landscape with lyrical splashes of acoustic guitar. From this timeless inner landscape, listeners are invited to travel into the spontaneous journey of the heart that is accessed through yoga and meditation.
ANJALI has recently been featured on Echoes, syndicated on over 175 public radio stations around North America.

Music for the Heart and Soul.......2003-05-03
I just heard portions from this CD on NPR's Echoes program on my way to work on a cold dreary Saturday morning and the music by these guys made my day - if you need something to lift your spirits, transport you to a place of peace and encourage you to appreciate the beauty around you, this is the prescription you need. Very highly recommended.

Album Description
About this CD (notes from the artist )
Topanga Dreams
Since 1988, I've lived in Topanga, California. This small mountain town has taught me the true meaning of community. By being there for each other, we can make dreams come true. May all your dreams come true...
Katyia's Dance
This song has evolved from being a solo dance performance piece in our Mystic Journey shows into a passionate tango...for two. So grab someone you love and enjoy the dance!
China Lily
This flute was a gift from my Dize (rhymes with pizza) teacher and is one of my favorites. Whenever I play it, I am transported to a place of inner peace and stillness.
Lhasa Love
I found this melody in a book of traditional Chinese folk songs, It was called Tibetan Dance before we transformed it into a lively multicultural boogie!
Aduman
Although there are many dialects spoken in the West African region of Guinea and Mali, the universal word for "sweet" amongst all the tribes is aduman.
Darjeeling Sunrise
Inspired by an Indian sunrise raga, this song reflects the experience that I had when I was on top of Tiger Hill in Darjeeling, India, witnessing a magical sunrise illuminating the awesome Himalayan mountains.

A Poetic Journey..........2004-05-05
I fell in love with the music of The Angels of Venice years ago, and thus when I learned that Suzanne Teng (a former "Angel") had produced a solo work, I was very excited. But the music on this CD easily surpasses anything Teng had done with the Angels of Venice. Lyrical melodies, accompanied by enthnic rhythms on traditional percussion instruments, overlaid with Teng's own haunting performances on Asian flute, transport the listener to another time and another place -- both in this world, and in the "otherworld" created by Teng's mystical music edge. Tibetan singing bowls, Middle-Eastern bells, Celtic strings and a vast assortment of drums and wind instruments create a musical whirlwind that will leave the listener breathlessly awaiting Teng's next musical offering.
Nice!.......2004-01-01
Suzanne Teng, the original flutist with the group "Angels of Venice", breaks out on her own in this playful and exotic 1999 release. Teng shows herself a master of flutistry, not only the playing the standard western "C" flute, but also piccolo, alto and bass flutes, dize (Chinese bamboo flute), ney (Turkish flute) and panpipes. Her tone is rich and liquid, and her improvisations range from jazzy to sinuous to ephemeral depending on the style of the piece. Many of the selections have a strong Near- or Far Eastern flavor, but the mood remains gentle and cheerful throughout the album, without any of the dark intensity that characterizes some of the "Angels'" work. Teng is not alone in "Mystic Journey" either; many guest artists lend their well-established talents to the mix to create ever-varied layers of texture. Gilbert Levy provides intricate world percussion accompaniments, while cellist Martin Tillman, Prince Diabate, Hans Christiansen of Rasa and Greg Ellis of Vas (among others) also pop in to lend a hand, making for a richly orchestrated album that is full of apt and interesting surprises. Occasionally the flute melodies seem a little trite and meandering, qualities that are at odds with the earthy, percussive background, but overall this album is appealing. Teng's simultaneously light and down-to-earth compositions find ways to be relaxing without being boring--a common pitfall for many New Age artists. The music of "Mystic Journey" would be great for warm-ups and slow-dancing for belly dancers, as well as just pleasant listening after a mundane and stressful day at work. Other recordings featuring Suzanne Teng's flute-playing include "Awake Inside a Dream" and "Music for Flute, Harp and Cello" by the Angels of Venice. For more bamboo and metal flute improvisations, in this case without accompaniment, check out also Richard Warner's "Quiet Heart / Spirit Wind".
Fabulous!.......2002-07-05
I ordered this CD after only hearing two songs which I "accidentally" heard while flipping the channels of the television. There was a performance done on Public Access and I was surprised to see that a CD was available. I ordered one for myself and a friend who is a yoga instructor. I love this CD! It is perfect for yoga or meditation or even just in the background while working. The music is heartfelt and joyous and everyone who hears it immediately loves it. I would definitly recommend it, especially if you are looking to expand your collection of instrumental music. Personally, I love flute pieces, so this was a perfect choice for me.
Fabulous.......2001-06-28
I caught Suzanne Teng & Mystic Journey on vacation at this year's Topanga Days festival, but didn't buy the CD. I thought about their music the whole rest of the trip and ordered the CD as soon as I got home. It's truly magnificent and beautiful music, and I could listen to the CD over and over. Perfect background for anything - reading, meditating, special dinners, yoga, whatever. I find myself getting up just to move to the music. They're all very talented and the CD is a real stress-melter.
Makes you want to listen and dance at the same time.......2000-08-31
This is really an excellent independently-produced CD. Some of the tunes are fairly straight-forward, rhythmic wonders with Ms. Teng's incredible flute playing polishing them off. Others are more "world" sounding incorporating thraot singing and chanting. There is not a bad cut on the CD. Listen to Katiya's Waltz, and try to concentrate on the beautiful music while your feet waltz across the floor.

Product Description
Nijole (nee-YOH-luh) writes sensual melodic songs with mystical landscapes, exotic twists, and lyrics to uplift and inspire. Accompanying her delicate lead vocals, she performs layers of Lithuanian background vocals, hinting of the choirs she grew up with in Chicago. The production of Fritz Heede features gifted players on ethnic percussion, stringed instruments, flutes, violins, as well as classical cello, electric guitars and synthesizers. Overall, Parallel Universe is a powerful journey for the heart and soul.

Touched Me On All Levels.......2005-12-11
What I love about this CD is that it is great on all levels. The music and production are fabulous, with exotic instrumentation. The vocals are beautiful, they have great tone and depth and the words are meaningful. The notes and melodies are interesting to listen to. Overall the whole CD is passionate and uplifting.
Fabulously Woven Styles.......2005-12-04
What a beautiful, dreamy, exotic, album!
I think I've been waiting a long time to hear this music!
I knew I was going to like it from the first amazing guitar riff
- a cross between Chris Isaac and something Middle Eastern like what Jimmy Page would come up with, set against a backdrop of poignant silence. And then you hear Nijole's voice almost whispering -- You rarely hear a voice so soothing and sensuous, but so expressive - her voice is audibly painting a picture with its subtle shades of emotional expression -- and then the music suddenly sweeps up and out into a lavish chorus of siren
song! And then she transports you to some ancient ancestral place when she suddenly goes Lithuanian on ya...! Good stuff... sent shivers down my back. And the girl's got a range, too - check out the unbelievably high notes in "Rise" - I couldn't tell if it was the flute until I heard it playing alongside her vocal,
except much LOWER!
So I thought, of course the first song is good, the second song is good... but I'm sure all the weak songs are going to be towards the end. Not so!! Every song is wonderful.
Each song is different from each the other - one more pop, one more ethnic, one almost jazzy and the last one is almost classical, though this one is the most unique to me - truly Nijole found a completely unique voice in "Evening Prayer".
But somehow no matter how different each song is from the other, the whole album is held together with Nijole's own unique style. She is continuing the Peter Gabriel tradition -- writing pop songs with a different vocabulary, borrowing from exotic influences but still unmistakably pop (or "art pop", as some like to call it). Great melodies that stick with you -- I'm constantly singing a different song in my head. And the words are speaking to our emotional experiences, as well as offering a positive philosophy. She has a unique insight into our psychology...perhaps into her own soul?
And certainly Nijole has found an equally worthy partner in Fritz Heede who did the production -- very lush, very exotic, walking the fine line between ethereal, airy and otherworldly on the one hand, until he brings you crashing down to earth with some wild guitar riff or pulsing ethnic percussion, carving out a style all his own. Each song is like a dramatic piece with a perfectly meshed musical score underlying the meaning - each like a little movie... The musicians on the album are all
very top-notch - always fresh, always creative, nothing clichéd in any of the musical prases or arrangements, which is certainly welcome in today's musical
environment! All in all, I can't help loving this album,
I really look forward to my drive now, knowing that it's going to be really special
Nijole sparkles!.......2005-11-19
Sparkis' cd is a rare combination of original material using contemporary musical references as well as folk sources. Sparkis combines her diverse influences and sources seamlessly. Highly recommended!
A Parallel Frequency of Sound.......2005-11-17
... At your reach...
Nijole's voice and Lyrics defy category, they send us on a musical ride yet unparalleled! It's a virtual cave where the ethnic meets the electric, where time-space line fades... where all is yet forming before it materializes in the Universe on a Time and Space line. Find out for yourself.

...when Arlo Guthrie first sang Alice's Restaurant--but I saw the movie when it was first released and bought the album as soon as it was one. I've followed his music for over 25 years and this CD is vintage and futuristic. A few of the songs, "A Soldier Makes it Home," "Doors to Heaven," and "Wake Up Dead" he's been playing and refining in concerts for years. At least one of them, "Under Cover of Night," echoes Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young "Ohio," though the words are nothing the same. This album brings together Guthrie's faithfulness to protest and the lyrical beauty on albums such as "Amigo" and "Outlasting the Blues." Maybe the coolest thing about this CD is that he produced it with his son Abe, who wrote with him some of the songs, and Terry La Berry. This is family listening at it's best! Only wish he'd give the girls a better part.

I Would Like to See This!.......2006-08-16
I would like to see a music DVD with this music set to animated
characters like the Pipe People I saw on a recent TV commercial. When I first heard this music, I listened to it in the dark upon going to bed. I immediately associated it with the Pipe People characters in my mind's eye. The dripping sounds seemed to be appropriate.
Beautifully lonely journey.......2004-12-06
It's very hard to accurately describe how this album truly makes me feel. It's like leaving your home late at night during a moderate down-pour, catching a cab cross-town, and breaking into an art museaum for the sole (soul) purpose of viewing a Monet, all by yourself, in the dark.
Really. I know how abstract that sounds.
The best way to listen to this work is by yourself, in the dark. Try not to hear the whir of your CD player or the muffled TV in another room. Focus on the music. Don't attribute it to the man who created it, though there be no denying him. Try to imagine that the music has somehow manifested itself from your own waking mind... you might find something. The final track, "Dissolve," is breath-taking. It's like you've spent the first six tracks discovering yourself, then your new-found reality "dissolves" away as you descend back into this reality that we share with each other. You'll soon find yourself, putting the lights back on, switching the CD back to track 1, hitting the lights again and seeking out that waking dream, one more time...

I Lived The Journey.......2005-11-25
I lived the journey; I experienced the concert in a small club in Houston. Abe sat in and played the drums. It was a Mystic night and a lifetime memory that I will always be able to validate, the child on the cover signed my sleeve. She was with mom at a small table selling CD's. If I remember this correct she is Abe's daughter. WOW Arlo's grandbaby. -
What a trip she will have.
Don't forget to play Alice's Restaurant every Thanksgiving. It has become a movement!
Welcome back, old friend..........2003-08-11
Although I've enjoyed Arlo ever since the first release of "Alice's Restaurant", I had not actually purchased a Guthrie release since "Washington County" and "Hobo's Lullaby" about 30 years ago. Just a case of too much good music in the world, too few dollars to buy it with and a shortage of hours in which to do attentive listening. However, last month I had a chance to get this CD at a great price, and I went for it. I've played it about ten times, and like it better each time around. This is mostly mellow, truly mystic as the title promises, but not "New Age Boring." Arlo's voice, like his father's takes a while to grow on a person. His lyrics, again like his daddy Woody, reward focused listening at first.I think all 11 songs here are good, but one he didn't write really gets in the heart quickly..."You Are the Song". Glen Anthony did the lyrics, Charlie Chaplin the music, but Arlo really nails this corny love poem, making it powerful rather than prissy. If you just read the words, it feels too wimpy for a guy to recite to his woman. But when Arlo sings it, somehow it works. One Arlo did write that packs a punch is called "Doors of Heaven." (Think about it being his version of John Lennon's "Imagine"---I like Arlo's song better.) To sum up, if you EVER liked Arlo, you'll like this CD. If you aren't familiar with his work, but you are a bit folky, a bit liberal, a bit spiritual...well, you'll like it too. Women may like it more than men (There is no equivalent to "Alice's Restaurant" or "Coming into Los Angeles" on this one) but I'm a guy, and I like it, too. So there!
A True Folk Legend.......2001-06-17
While ,Dylan gets all the press.Arlo goes on and makes great music. Mystic journey has the stuff of old Dylan that Dylan lost somewhere in the shuffle of personalities..Juat a nice collection of music from the best voice in folk music...A new cd would be nice.. I'll write the songs and Arlo can being them home.
