By combining the power and grace of an opera singer with the earthiness of a blues singer and the conviction of a folk singer, Odetta became a commanding, stirring singer unlike any other. For whatever reason, Vanguard chose to follow up l999's superb collection, Best of the Vanguard Years, with this often overlapping blues-centered compilation. Of course, the quality of the music is first-rate any way you slice it. Most noteworthy here is the inclusion of four previously unreleased cuts featuring Odetta in a rare jazzy setting backed by a piano trio. One of those tunes, the brooding "Fare-thee-well," must surely rank as one of her most evocative readings. These four piano-backed songs augment four other tunes, presumably from the same early-1960s piano session, that first appeared on the Best of collection last year. The remaining 14 tunes, which mostly conform to Odetta's standard pared-down style, range from traditional field hollers to country blues to classic 1920s urban blues to Woody Guthrie covers. --Marc Greilsamer

Some of the songs on this cd are like that but some that i remember have been jazzed up and while i am sure i will like them eventually, they were not what i was expecting.

Still, i am glad to finally have a cd with some of the songs i recall from my childhood.
