A founding member of the all-female Irish American group Cherish the Ladies, Liz Carroll returned in 2000 to professional music-making following a 12-year hiatus. Her comeback album, Lost in the Loop, won a slew of awards and broke ground for this set, which is as deftly executed and, in some ways, even more adventurous. Her fiddle has never sounded so agile and deep-throated, its singing tone and daring slides marking but not falling headlong into the traditional dance rhythms. She is equally adept at the slow airs, which are the truest test of a fiddler's chops. Her pitch remains spot-on and her phrasing is centered, precise, and graceful in any speed or tempo. She is ably assisted by Mairtin O'Connor on accordion, the Turtle Island Quartet, John Doyle on guitar, Jackie Moran on bodhran, and other fine players who have all pitched in to make this an acoustic album to treasure. --Christina Roden

On Music for Two, banjo wizard Béla Fleck and stand-up bass maestro Edgar Meyer effortlessly sail through a challenging program that includes compositions by Bach, a sonata by Henry Eccles, a Miles Davis tune, and a number of self-composed finger twisters. The amazing thing about this varied selection is not its eclecticism--which is only to be expected with these two--but that it all blends together so seamlessly. Fleck's jazz-tinged compositions (like "The Lake Effect") and Meyer's bluegrass-inspired tunes (like "Wishful Thinking") sit so comfortably next to Bach's baroque jewels and Davis's cool jazz that it makes you question the entire of concept of musical classification. (In fact, the Bach preludes, inventions, and partitas translate so well to the banjo/bass arrangements, you have to wonder if old JSB might not have had a bit of bluegrass in his soul.) Music for Two was recorded live at a series of 2001 concerts, where Fleck and Meyer proved conclusively that the banjo and the bass were capable of remarkable subtlety and not just twang and boom. --Michael John Simmons

A Must Have.......2007-04-25
These two really sound good together. If you're not so impressed with the music when you first hear it (I don't know if that's possible), check out the DVD that comes with it. You will gain such an appreciation for the music that's being played. Watch out for the guy making the banjo jokes. This CD is really an incredible work, I can't say it enough. Very relaxing music.
Broad Spectrum Virtuosity.......2007-04-23
This album runs the gamut of styles and genre. It is hard to get bored when a musical turn is but a few notes away. The two musicians integrate their instruments with incredible skill. I hate to give it a four star rating. The music is worth the 5. The loooooong, live applause tracks detract from the album. The asides by the musicians are sometimes hard to hear. Minor aggravations aside, this album plays frequently, very frequently, in our home, car, iPods, etc.
Cool Pairing for Meyer/Fleck Fans.......2007-01-02
I've seen both Edgar Meyer and Bela Fleck live (unfortunately not together) and I really think this album just captures the magic of their live shows: I can almost see them in my living room together! For those not so familiar with the music of one or both the inclusion of classical tunes with those composed by Meyer/Fleck and other contemporary songwriters is a cool drink of water. Music for Two is a good intro to the world of cozy bluegrass.
Bela Fleck + Edgar Meyer = strange mixture .......2006-11-10
Bela Fleck is one of the my jazz favorites... And hi with combination called Edgar Meyer are... great music!!!
Virtuosity Knows No Musical Boundaries.......2006-10-22
Béla Fleck & Edgar Meyer are both extraordinarily accomplished musicians who spend much of their time in very different worlds: Fleck in his newgrass space and Meyer in a more classical mode. But each has travelled in the other's territory before, and on this CD they connect around more genres than you can shake a stick at. In addition to their own compositions they tackle many of their joint favorites. The affection shows in the passion of the playing and the obvious camaraderie. And the accompanying DVD is a treat. Don't miss this one.

Great CD.......2007-03-22
As an amatuer Irish fiddle player this CD is music to my ears. My fiddle teacher told me about Liz Carroll so I ordered this one and also "In the Loop". I like them both and have learned several of the tunes so I attempt to play along with her. [...]. I reccommend these CDs highly to listener and player.
Liz Carroll's "Lake Effect".......2005-07-06
Outstanding recording. Liz Carroll is an innovative, passionate virtuoso of the Irish fiddle!
Bland Liz.......2005-04-21
Liz Carroll is a wonderful fiddler and a generally fine composer of Celtic tunes, but I don't think she's at her best on this album. There's just something missing here, it's all rather bland, with each track sounding pretty much the same as the next. If you want more variety, my suggestion is to leave this one, perhaps try her "Lost In The Loop" album. I think it's much better. Or for very creative other modern day Celtic fiddling, try Catriona MacDonald "Bold" or Eileen Ivers' earlier albums (before she got a bit too rocky).
Raises New Standards of Irish Fiddle Playing.......2003-06-27
Liz Carroll's 'Lake Effect' is the CD to be had. It's a fine one at that. 'Lake Effect' has moved to a higher parallel from her last album 'Lost in the Loop.' 'Loop' that became a smash hit is another fine album to listen to. In other words, both are a superfine tour de force. Reason I say this is that both albums were named by Irish Echo as "Traditional Artist of the Year" in 2000 and 2001, respectively. Founding member of "Cherish the Ladies," the Chicago-born Carroll has on her own done well for herself on a more adventurous solo undertaking. After some hiatus, Carroll's comeback produced a more freedom and style and much deeper tone and dynamic slides that not to far from dazzling traditonal dance rhythms. The pitch and tempo are graceful and dead-on riveting. Those who accompany Carroll are Solas guitarist John Doyle and Galway's own accordion player Máirtín O'Connor and Turtle Island String Quartet. Carroll does a stunning work-of-art of new mastering on an old tradition. 'Lake Effect' is sure to take Irish music by storm. This is a must own for those who appreciate a little different from the traditional to a new standard of Irish fiddle music.
Me Own Celtic Music Queen Elizabeth!.......2002-12-21
Liz Carroll is one of the very best Celtic fiddlers currently playing. I have no doubt that there are many other fine fiddlers and, if put together in the same pub, they would not worry about who is best due to the sheer fun of jamming with each other. I suppose it is this sense of having fun in pushing the envelope and collaboration that sets this CD apart from other CD's. Non traditional percussion and string instruments are used in various arrangements. At one end of the range is what sounds like chamber music. At the other, Latino percussion Salsa is added. Then you are admiring the traditional, old reels and jigs and realize Liz is composing her own. They sound as legit as the traditional songs that are as eagerly washed down with the traditional Guinness. I admire Liz's collaboration with other artists in finding different chemistries that work. My wish list, however, is that she maintain her collaboration with Solas band members, especially John Doyle. His counterpoint guitar chords to her fiddle are exquisite. Even in fast reels, such as the Jump Ball set, John and Liz are hitting the notes and chords together perfectly. Number two on my wish list : I can't help but wonder what some of the reels might sound like with a Tommy Hayes, Johnny McDonagh, Frank Torpey, Jackie Moran, or Donnchadh Gough on Bodhran (Irish Drum) for some Irish Salsa.

Supremely inviting country baritone tales .......2004-10-29
Richards' press compares his languid baritone to Don Williams and Gordon Lightfoot, but his introspective songs of vulnerability and mettle are more akin to those of Rodney Crowell and roots-rocker Dave Alvin, and his melodies and story telling follow the footsteps of Billy Joe Shaver and John Prine. Heady comparisons for a relatively unknown artist's second album, but Richards' extraordinary songs are delivered with a confidence that belie their love-torn turmoil. You'd think that someone who could smoothly name-check bluesman Willie McTell in rhyme would make sure you noticed - but Richards draws you with an emotional weariness that translates into tasteful understatement.
The buzz generated by Richards' 2002 debut "Jam the Breeze" is fully realized on this follow-up. He's retained the languor and the melodic hooks of his first release, but magnified their effect with production by R.S. Field (who's worked with Prine, Shaver, Allison Moorer and others) and pedal steel from the recently un-retired Lloyd Green. Field emphasizes Richards' soulfulness by surrounding him with gently loping rhythms and surprisingly enthusiastic support from Nashville A-listers. Richards' laid-back singing is buoyed by a lively-two step for "Honkytonk Graveyard," and "Bells of Odilia" lays a sublime path of organ and steel from Saturday night's drunk to Sunday morning's redemption.
Songs of working class roots, first person civil-war narratives, and country music's glory days are only a few examples of how the South has taken hold of this Wisconsin native's writing. Richards has assimilated the elements that once made Nashville the center of American music, and is doing his part to help Music City regain its former relevance.
Awesome new talent.......2004-07-29
I'd like you to meet one of the best musicians out there that will never be a big star. Chris is a throwback to the days of authentic country roots. He's an intelligent storyteller and it isn't often you hear someone with this talent level. The music business is buzzing about this guy, but it's the side of the business that has stayed true to real music. His debut 'Jam the Breeze' was great, and he's just kicked it up a notch, which is incredible in itself. Do not miss out on this one.

My favorite album for working in my studio...........2005-01-22
This Album is fantastic. My favorite song is "Broken Will, Beading Heart" the interaction between the guitar and cello in this song is amazing. Dan really hits this song with a lot of emotion. The layers in his music are really impressive. Nothing better for making art.
