On her sophomore album, singer-songwriter Cheryl Wheeler fails to deliver the coup de grâce her debut hinted lay straight ahead. Instead she continues to learn both songwriting craft and how not to produce an album. Like her debut, most of this disc suffers from overly sweet adult-contemporary production touches such as saxophone solos and busy drumming. Songs such as "Tell Him Goodbye" and "In Your Heart" show the fledgling folkie trying hard to perfect a middle-of-the-road rock style. "Emotional Response" reached that goal, climbing to No. 24 on the AC charts. But in this album's final pair of songs, "Summer Fly" and "Piper," Wheeler's gift for melody and strong voice finally takes over and shows what she can do. --Robert Baird

Her Best.......2003-04-01
This was my first Cheryl Wheeler CD. I was hauted by this melodic CD AND the production values. Perhaps the other reviewers here prefer guitar and stand-up bass as the basis or "pure" folk oriented music, but it is the song that shines through. Kenny White plays piano beautifully and In my opinion, the arrangements are superb. I dont understand the mediocre reviews of this CD. If you have seen Cheryl in person, her voice is beautiful, but she talks too much and is too politically bitchy. She would be better off singing and more of this type material would be welcome. Cheryl must not think much of this CD either, since she does not perform songs from it in the 6 concerts I have seen her in.

Most people familar with the full body of Wheeler's recorded work agree that she is at her best when her producers and studio musician take the day off and her vocal craftmanship and guitar skills are left to shine through. Unfortunately the producers and mixers had a heyday on Half a Book resulting in an overly slick production just doesn't hold up as well as her other albums.
First-time Wheeler listeners would be better served by "Circles and Arrows" and "Sylvia Hotel," both outstanding efforts.
As good as Wheeler is on CD, don't miss a chance to see her in person. She's a superb performer.

WHAT?NO CLIPS?NO SOUND BYTES?WHAT A SHAME.THE ALBUM IS GOOD.AS GOOD AS THE FIRST ONE.DUKE IS ON THE FIRST FEW TRACKS EVEN THOUGH HE NOW DOESNT RAP AT ALL DUE TO THE GUNSHOT HE RECEIVED.IT STAY UNDERGROUND THE WHOLE WAY.YOU TELL THAT JACKEN MISSES HIS BROTHER BEING ON THE TRACKS.BUT OVERALL IT F*CKIN GOOD.GET THIS ONE.ITS HARD TO FIND BUT WORTH IT!

Where do I begin with this review, for me trying to get a hold of this album was a process that I thought would never reach it's conclusion. I have travelled to the states (well just florida)looking for a copy only to be met with disapointment, forget here in england I was lucky to even know about Psycho Realm let alone have access to their material. It took three attempts to order it throught the internet before I finally struck gold, and now I have it and well...lets just say if you like well thought out and intelligent lyrics fused with some of the best production to ever grace an album in hip hop you need to come over to the sick side.
Sick Jacken and his brother Duke return with part 2 of the war story and it is a perfect successor to the excellent part 1, unfortunatly during the making of this album Duke was shot through the neck leaving him paralysed from the neck down meaning he was unable to complete the rest of it leaving Jacken to go at it alone, but luckily Jacken is more than capable of holding it down not to mention the album features the Street Platoon Cynic and Crow to help with the proceedings.
The album is split into two parts, the first (the war years part 2) is a straight up continuation from where the previous album had left off and it features Duke all the way through while the second half (post war era:the reconstruction)only features Duke on the first three tracks while Jacken goes on solo or is helped by the street platoon. The production also switches a little bit on the second half especially towards the end giving the impression that after the war years they wanted to liven it up a bit showing the good side of Pico Union (the place where their from) and in my opinion it is a bit hit and miss, the majority is fantastic but the last two tracks are in my opinion weak giving the album a bit of a sour taste after so much sweetness but this by no means diminishes the acomplishments of Sick Jacken and Duke, together they have created some of the best material to ever come from hip hop with their three albums (the psycho realm/war story/war story 2)it is a shame that they have been mostly overlooked even being dropped by their label with their first album (Columbia)leaving them to go the independent route.
I cannot stress how much people need to check Psycho Realm, be sure to get all their albums you won't be disapointed and Duke if you read this my prayers go out to you.

the psycho realm is, in my mind, one (if not the) best HH band in USA. nowhere else will you find such intense, intelligent and underground lyrics, such precise and exact critiks about all this mess (but don't expect to hear B-real on this one, M freeze, which i'm so found about, was takin' numbers at the moment), and such original, dark, deep and hyptnotic beats. I heard about duke gonzalez's tragedy, then the only thing I hope is that sick symphonies and war stories from pico union could still be there for us folks...

This album is outstanding from the first song to the last am glad that there is chicano rappers bringing up the game am a soldier an i have been in iraq i was also raises in Aztlan (Los Angeles) so I know alot about what they taking about this a great cd for those of you who don't listed to that commersialzed
rap like ja-z chingy and speciallly 50 cent and emmenem or tired of hearing about he bling bling b.s. then this cd is for you.
