The spirit of Woody Guthrie lives on in Ramblin' Jack Elliot, a folk legend in his own right who got his start in the late '40s. A half century later, Elliott still lives in a parallel universe where Dylan (a one-time student of his) refused to go electric and Elvis never mattered. Friends of Mine is a collection of low-fi duets with Emmylou Harris, Tom Waits, John Prine, Rosalie Sorrels, and Bob Weir. But the album isn't so much about Elliott's famous pals as it is about songs that refuse to die: Joe Ely's "Me and Billy the Kid," Dylan's "The Walls of Red Wing," and even more grizzled standards like "Hard Travelin'" and "Riding Down the Canyon." Stripped of the Dead's hippie caravan, even "Friend of the Devil" sounds like something two itinerant musicians might have played on a '20s street corner. The only misstep is the shamelessly sentimental "Bleeker Street Blues." Written by Elliott when he heard Dylan was ailing in 1997, it exists mostly for the names it drops: Joni Mitchell, Allen Ginsberg, Pete Seeger, and even that avatar of folk, Eddie Van Halen. --Keith Moerer

Rosie Thomas has a delicate, weird little voice and it's never really been the forefront of her music until now. The preteen Joni Mitchell/ choirgirl strains of her vocal tones are something to be played up, not down; thankfully she's finally realized that on her Nettwerk debut and fourth solo album. The album also includes studio patter tacked onto the beginning or ending of the songs, awesome little snippets of Rosie's famous comedic wit. Such material works in the album's favor, grounding the material by showing that Thomas is not some precious freak-folker. It also gives a glimpse of her live performances, where Rosie sometimes performs as a neurotic woman in a neck brace hopelessly in love with Leo DiCaprio named Sheila (really). The record's title likely refers to the batch of famous friends who act as accompanying musicians throughout. Thomas's core of musical compatriots in vaguely Christian dreamy emo folk-rock is here expanded from Pacific Northwesterners Damien Jurado, David Bazan, and Jeremy Enigk to include New Yorker Sufjan Stevens. Sufjan and Rosie duet beautifully and breathlessly on their cover of R.E.M.'s "The One I Love." This sparse and Beatle-length album (ten songs, just over half an hour) is her strongest by far. Huzzah! --Mike McGonigal

Love that Rosie!.......2007-07-13
This is one of my favorite cds. I LOVE Rosie Thomas! The Kite Song is wonderful - the lyrics are touching and the music beautiful.
Wonderful ..........2007-05-25
Bought on a whim, this CD has turned out to be a real treasure. Soft, lyrical and really comforting music. I'm lovin' it. The infectious giggling with her pals on one song has you enjoying it almost as much as they obviously enjoyed making it.
Rosie.......2007-05-07
Rosie Thomas is one of my favorite singers. I found her by "accident" over a year ago and have all her music. While this CD is great, it is not my favorite. It lacks some of the wistfulness that has made her music so unique. However, having said that, it is still sweet, silly, and magical and still at times, wistful. I would recommend this to any of her fans.
love it...love her.......2007-04-10
I bought this cd as a surprise to myself, as I had never heard of Rosie Thomas... AND I love her! The cd is beautiful, relaxing and even humorous at times. Super creative and FUN!
Good timing..........2007-04-05
I walked into a record store in Oslo, Norway on Monday and the guy behind the counter had just put "These Friends of Mine" on. My Norwegian husband, my teenaged son and I were all dumbstruck - what was this magic floating out of the speakers? We hung around the shop and listened to the first three songs - each one better than the last - before buying the CD. Our only multi-generational regret: "These Friends of Mine" lasts only 33 minutes.

Champagne Music!.......2006-07-09
Thank goodness that these well filled CDs of selections from three of Offenbach's most entertaining and tuneful operettas are available. Exactly the thing to provide some hearty nourishment for Winter nights. Ideal also for a Summer barbecue. In both cases, a glass of champagne, or at least some other bubbly beverage, would be good to have at hand - everything here no doubt will call for a toast or several.
It is so nice to be able to hear in these translations the witty words, sung with welcome clarity and meaning by these admirable artists. As I recall, there were no microphones in sight, and perhaps not even used, when this production of Orpheus In The Underworld was brought to Australia, with a few cast changes but the same sparkle as shown here. Crisp diction and lively, often lovely, singing - a great recipe for enjoyable listening indeed.
The recording sounds a bit shrill here and there, but what a churlish quibble; to Hades with such curmudgeonly qualifications! This is music to raise the spirits, and not just those from Hades.

Witty strings.......2006-09-25
Good album, maybe a little too much in the same speed but the lyrics are witty and the strings a nice extra. Bluebirds and Jessica are the prize numbers.
Strings.......2006-01-13
Yo. This ain't too bad. It's like a Jonathan Richman album. It makes you like music again. But it's the strings man...awesome. The lyrics are a little wack, but hey, that's cool...this album is mad sweet...mad catchy. A good buy.
Never gets old.......2005-02-26
I have to say...I liked this slightly more than Adam's first solo record, "Garfield". This recording is less low-fi than the previous album which takes away from the kitschy, intimate vibe "Garfield" gave out, but this is a great album nonetheless. Songs like Bluebirds, Hard To Be A Girl and Jessica bring back the same chilled out mood as in the first solo album and never depart from Adam's well known crazy shtick. I don't give "Friends of Mine" a full 5 stars because I was less impressed with some of the album fillers such as Broken Joystick, No Legs, and Secret Tongues. Not bad songs, but not as awesome the other tracks.
If you haven't heard this guy yet, I warn you...this is not some typical folk-boy with an acoustic guitar. And listening to just one album is definitely not enough...check out The Moldy Peaches and Kimya Dawson's solo album too. A crucial thing to remember when listening to Adam or his fellow bandmate Kimya, is not to take the music too seriously...."Night after night, I would lie with her pets, like a mail-order bride in a box by the steps" ...enough said.
Like your first smoke of the day..........2004-08-28
This album makes me feel good. Right now, my feet hurt, I'm kind of tired, kind of grumpy, but this album makes me giddy. Maybe because I see him as a satirical Ben Kweller, someone with witty, intelligent and brave lyrics that make you second guess Birds and people with no legs.
I suppose his background with the Moldy Peaches has helped him along a tad, but I can't help but have respect for any artist that breaks waway from their band to create a solo album that is actually quite wondeful!
AMAZING.......2004-08-11
It's just beautiful! Something you can listen to for years and years without getting bored. A chill out masterpiece. Nothing can be more beautiful and relaxing than that! A must!

Friends of Mine and Ramblin' Jack Elliott.......2006-02-26
This is Jack Elliot at his best -- reminiscing through song. What is special about this CD is that it includes Ramblin' Jack with his friends and folk artists Arlo Guthrie, Peter Rowan, Tom Waits, Emmylou Harris & Nanci Griffith, John Prince, Bob Weir, Jerry Jeff Walker and John Prine. All of this on one CD!
Friends of Mine makes a great gift for the folk music lover in your life.
The old guy can still come through..........2001-12-16
Most who would be reading this review already know that Jack has been more famous for his friendships than for his own performances. Woody's last protege, Dylan's first personal mentor, and all that. But in this recent album, he shows he can still create moments that are deeply touching. "Walls of Redwing" and "Rex's Blues" are the gems here...I listened to them over and over and over the first couple of months I owned the disc. There are three or four other fine selections as well, and then there are the misfires..."Me and Billy the Kid" and "Last Letter" and "Bleeker Street" didn't work for me. I bought this on impulse because I didn't even realize Jack was still making records, and I had not bought one of his albums since about l970. Despite it being a mixed bag, I don't regret paying full price for "Friends of Mine." What's good on here won't ever be done better by anyone...and what isn't great is still interesting. A new RJE fan should buy the reissues of his early work...but if you are in the upper 50's like me, and remember the birth of the folk revival in l957-58, it is kind of a kick to buy Jack's album and savor the fact that he has survived and still turns out good work.
Elliott further establishes himself as a vital link in folk.......2001-06-07
We should all be lucky enough to have Jerry Jeff Walker, Emmylou Harris and Tom Waits for friends. We should all lucky enough to have lived and toured with Woody Guthrie or influenced Bob Dylan early in his career. And while most of us can't count these among our personal experiences, we're blessed to share them through the life and music of Ramblin' Jack Elliot.
As a human confluence of forty years of people, places, and songs, Elliot draws from a bottomless well of experience in this series of duets. He recalls his earliest influence with Guthrie's "Hard Travelin'," and his Greenwich Village days with Dylan's "He Was a Friend of Mine." He harmonizes with Rosalie Sorels ("Last Letter"), trades verses with John Prine ("Walls of Red Wing"), and blends his vocals with Tom Waits on the newly penned lament, "Louise." Emmylou Harris and Nanci Griffith help conjure the spirit of Townes Van Zandt on "Rex's Blues."
With his latest, Elliot once again proves himself a vital link in the chain of folk-music tradition.
Good but mixed.......2000-05-26
About half the songs are gems, the other half either don't seem to work. Falls pretty squarely in the traditional 'folk' category so fans won't be disappointed. Only a few of the collaborations seem to really bring the best out of both parties (Rex's Blues) while the others, unfortunately, seem muddled. A slightly more successful experiment like this was Rob Wasserman's Duets. First timers to Ramblin' Jack should probably try one of the other albums.
hard to define.......1999-12-07
This disc isn't exactly country, it isn't exactly western and it isn't exactly folk. It's a good buy, the only sour note comes from the last track; it isn't even a song.

Although Henry Purcell usually is cited as the greatest master of English text-setting, such judgments ignore the genius of John Dowland, whose music not only is totally accordant with its texts, but whose melodies are invariably memorable and eminently singable. This recording offers a variety of vocal works, most for mixed voices, accompanied by Anthony Rooley's well-tuned and tastefully realized lute figures. Of the program's 18 songs, 11 are by Dowland; the rest are by several contemporaries--Morley, Tomkins, and Weelkes--who both encouraged and were influenced by Dowland's unique musical persona, a remarkable combination of "distraught melancholy" and flawless melodic and harmonic instincts. Familiar and beloved tunes are here, including "Come again!" and "Sleep wayward thoughts." But just as compelling are Tomkins's "Weep no more, thou sorry boy" and Claudin de Sermisy's "Las, je m'y plains." The four voices--some of England's finest early-music singers--are so distinct that rather than a carefully blended ensemble, we hear each individual voice clearly defined. It's an interesting effect that works well and adds immeasurably to the color and mood of the music. --David Vernier
