This new version of the Fiddler on the Roof soundtrack coincides with the movie's 30th anniversary (which is also celebrated by a special edition DVD). The CD is notable for several instrumental tracks by John Williams, as well as for "Any Day Now," a previously unreleased song performed by Perchik/Paul Michael Glaser (better known for his starring role in TV's Starsky and Hutch). The soundtrack is often compared unfavorably with the original 1964 cast album, in which Zero Mostel played the part of Tevye (here performed by Topol, who had been in the 1967 London production). But this CD has a lot going for it, including glossy remastering and, of course, Isaac Stern as the fiddler. In the end, whatever version you decide to pick up, Fiddler remains one of the most enduring musicals of all time. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I have other versions of CDs of "The Fiddler of the Roof" but Topol is the best and this is one of the best CDs with Topol. As far as "The Fiddler On the Roof" goes, that is a thumbs up 5 star anytime story and songs.

At first, I thought this musical was weird but then I grew to like it. It has a sad ending but the thems in the movie are really interesting. Life really is like being a fiddler on the roof. In a musical coming up at my school, I am playign the part of Grandmother Tzeitel in Tevye's dream. I am excited to play the part and I think our musical will go very well!

The music from Fiddler on the Roof is exciting, fun, interesting and funny! This CD is mixed with humor, music from different cultures and a wide mix of different songs. Each song is so different that I can listen to it for hours. I was surprised how enjoyable and pleasent it really is. Although...it is easy to get this music stuck in your head!

Joan Baez beat Bob Dylan to folk stardom, but she soon became one his biggest supporters, key interpreters, and briefly his lover. Any Day Now finds her playing all three roles; supporting, interpreting, and loving a disc full of his songs. Many of the more curious numbers ("The Walls of Redwing," "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere") were unavailable from Dylan at the time of the double-album's original 1968 release. Baez gets deeply into this stuff, adding her own weight and color to Dylan's idiosyncratic lines; even tackling the epic-length weirdness of "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands." This is an album of appealing Dylan interpretations and it's enlightening to hear his work from a female perspective. I heard some of Dylan's songs here first and only later experienced his own versions, for example I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine which is definitely very different (and more beautiful to me) in Baez's version.

Other great tracks include I Pity The Poor Immigrant (still as relevant as ever), Love Is Just A Four-Letter Word, the heart-breaking Walls Of Redwing (about inmates in a jail), One Too Many Mornings, Boots Of Spanish Leather and Restless Farewell.

Everything about this album is just SO RIGHT: her phrasing, the choice of songs and her elegant delivery. This is a classic folk album of the 1960s and also essential listening for Dylan fans. I love it. This re-issue contains two live bonus tracks that were recorded in Japan.

A solid cover album and an intimate tribute.......2007-03-23

Any Day Now finds Joan Baez backed by a decidedly pop ensemble, covering the 60's folk and folk-rock songs of her one-time lover Bob Dylan. As is often the case with cover albums, some of the songs hit harder and better than others, but Baez couldn't have chosen a better oeuvre to sample, so most of the lulls are due to performance issues. All in all, though, if you like Joan Baez and/or Bob Dylan, Any Day Now is a great choice.

As the album opens, it's clear that this music is not the stripped-down folk that typifies earlier Baez recordings. She's accompanied by steel guitar, drums, electric guitar and...sitar? It's interesting to hear Joan backed by a pop ensemble and, for the most part, it works.

The less-convincing numbers on this album are mainly due to Baez's choice of songs. It's not that the songs are bad, they just don't fit her as well as they could. For instance, Baez's calculated, classic, vibrato-heavy singing voice has a little trouble relaxing the way Dylan would on "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere." "Live Minus Zero/No Limit" is slightly bizarre, since it's sung about a woman, as is "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands." The latter was an epic, mysterious love song on Blonde on Blonde, but for Baez it makes you wonder why she's singing an 11+ minute love song to a woman. "Tears Of Rage," though it's admirable that Baez makes an artistic risk to sing the entire tune a cappella isn't all successful--this version doesn't come close to touching The Band's definitive rendition, or even Gene Clark's excellent version (from White Light).

Though Baez doesn't perfectly match up with some of Dylan's songs, she breathes new life and meaning into several of them. She brings gritty reality to the dark ballad "North Country Blues," and her arrangement brings new narrative life and emotion to the classic "Boots of Spanish Leather." Likewise, she chooses some lesser-known Dylan songs like "Love is Just a Four-Letter Word," "Walls of Redwing" and "Walkin' Down the Line," that bring a few surprises and mix things up a bit.

Any Day Now was originally a double album--it's great that it all fits onto one disc, even with two (disposable) bonus tracks to boot. Overall, I think it's a worthwhile album, with some excellent interpretations of Dylan's songs that occasionally brings them into new, unique light.

i've always loved Joan Baez's cover versions of Dylan songs (except for one: the Hard Rain's gonna fall version on her Europe '83 album where she tries to immitate Mr. Dylan). it's nice to see a few bonus tracks on this re-release on CD.

For being a 1968 release it took me long enough to find it, but I think it is an excellent cd and for any Joan Baez and Bob Dylan fans it will be a perfect fit.

A Dear Friend Told Me ..........2005-09-15

This album was the childhood favorite of a very dear friend of mine. He gave me the cd for Christmas, 2002 and I have very nearly worn the tracks off of it (an old vinyl saying!). I grew up listening to Dylan sing "Sad Eyed Lady", he grew up listening to Joan's version. We are both die-hard Dylan and Baez lovers to this day. Ms. Baez' renderings made me wonder so I have been scouring the internet for copies of "the way Dylan did these songs". My friend has moved on, now, but I shall always be greatful for his gift. This is a great disc! Ok, I admit that I don't like "Tears of Rage" very much. But that's just me and, on a cd, it doesn't matter. I just hit the button and move right into "Sad Eyed Lady" (which I always play twice, by the way. I REALLY love that song!!). If you enjoy Dylan's verse but would rather hear it sung by someone else, I strongly recommend you listen to this one. I think you'll like it.

I recently purchased a Pat Travers CD .......2007-07-31

And there was a review card on this CD in the Pat Travers CD, so I think that I'll get a copy of it and see how it sounds, I was surprised to see that one of the players was once in the band The Law with Paul Rodgers of BadCo fame of which they made only one CD.

Classic Rock Veterans' Release is Engaging and Solid.......2006-09-21

Consisting of former members of the Faces, Bad Company, the Who, and Foreigner, the Jones Gang delivers a highly-listenable, 70s-tinted set of album rock tunes.

The CD's production is solid, as are the performances. Of particular note are the vocal stylings of Robert Hart (ex-Bad Co. and the Distance) whose Rod Stewart meets Paul Rodgers singing carries the album.

Although far from groundbreaking, the Jones Gang offers something that is pretty rare nowadays -- solidly performed contemporary classic rock that stands up to repeated listenings. Despite the preponderance of mid-tempo tunes, it never gets old. I look forward to a follow-up!

It doesn't knock me over..........2006-06-18

It seemed a little too light for me. There are some songs that sound like old Faces tunes.. Six to Midnight, Where Are You?, & Red Hot are good. The opener, Time of your Life is good as well. Not bad though, sounds like it would have fit somewhere in the early 1970's...

A Rocking surprisse!.......2006-03-08

I purchased this mainly because of the price, but also by some word of mouth that has been going around about this. I really enjoy it, and agree with all the other positive reviews here. Especially enjoyable are the songs "Six to Midnight" (which harkens back to the bar-rocking days of The Faces (with Rod). "Where Are You" is very much a tip of a hat (or middle finger?) to The Who. They use this song to make a point on how Kenny was treated by the band/Roger/Pete? Anyway, fun to listen to on many levels. I awarded this with 4 stars, just because it is really a collection of various songs, without the feel of a fluid cd.

Highly recommended.......2002-08-20

This pricey UK import CD filled a lot of gaps in my music collection and is an excellent overview of notable music of (mostly) recent films. It's difficult to find consistently listenable soundtrack collections like this, by that I mean free from the obligitory Whitney Houston or Celine Dion embarrassments. Usually rights issues prevent comprehensive compilations like this in the US, too. While I enjoy a lot of soundtrack music, there aren't so many complete soundtracks that I would care to own, some examples of exceptions being Ennio Morricone scores and the About a Boy Soundtrack. While certainly most of these tracks are the actual recordings used in their respective films, I noticed that "La mamma morte" from Philadelphia is not the Maria Callas version. There might be other cases like this, I'm not sure. And "Unchained Melody" from Ghost is an orchestral version, not the pop song (but I consider this a plus). This collection seems to focus on the subtle and quirky, yet melodic music of indie films, with less emphasis on the loud sweeping orchestral scores of major Hollywood hits, but of course there are a few like Gladiator and Braveheart, which are welcome here because like I've said, I probably wouldn't listen to the whole score. I love the two Thomas Newman compositions from American Beauty, and it's good to have some music from films by the Cohen Brothers here. My only complaint would have to be the order of the songs. You would think they would avoid jumping back and forth between pop songs, orchestral scores, and quiet music, but it just seems thrown together by random. I would compare this collection to the excellent "Miramax Films Greatest Hits" but the makers of that album knew to group the two pop/rock songs at the end.

One of The Best "Cover" Albums of Dylan.......2007-01-21

JOAN BAEZ was the ultimate diva of the folk revivalist era. Following Bob Dylan, she took her singing into the protest movements, particular Civil Rights. Unlike Dylan, however, Joan Baez continued to be at the forefront of the nonviolent, anti-war movement. She continues to attract a large following of devoted fans. Her CD ANY DAY NOW is totally comprised of the early Bob Dylan songs. Other than Dylan himself, Baez is clearly the paramount interpreter of them. Her rendition of Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands is particularly moving as many people have speculated that the lyrics are a portrait of Baez; others say it is an ironic paean to the Statue of Liberty. Certainly it is one of Dylan's most beautiful and enigmatic works.

Dylan wasnt really my thing and Baez was really my thing either, but it just all works so perfectly here. A stunning album that really has it all.

Baez Does Dylan with great sidemen but little interpretation.......2005-06-21

`Any Day Now' is a single CD of a 1968 two LP album by Joan Baez, performing songs written by Bob Dylan.

In one sense, this is absolutely the most natural album of performances you can imagine. In the 1960's, Dylan and Baez were the king and queen of American folk music, hands down. Even better, each came by their celebrity independently and joined forces together at the pinnacle of the overheated folkie world of the mid-1960s.

Folk music at this time became popular from the intersection of at least four major forces. The first was the civil rights movement and its white allies who were ripe for new voices to turn their polemics into art. The second was the growing popularity of groups such as the Kingston Trio and similar acts that brought to popular radio an awareness of historical `folk music'. The third was the arrival of The Beatles and the attending British Invasion. This forced homegrown folk performers to adapt newer, stronger styles to stay afloat and visible in the great wave which would become `ROCK music'. This moved Dylan toward his electric style of `Highway 61 Revisited'. The fourth was the anti-Vietnam war protest, which effectively merged with the civil rights movement, at least in the person of Martin Luther King. It is quite possible that a fifth major influence was Pete Seeger and the memory of Woody Guthrie, both of whom embodied the modern `singer / songwriter' long before that became a popular expression.

So, an album sung by the leading female folk vocalist of songs by the leading folksong writer, backed by the very best sidemen that money can hire should be a sure thing. Right!

Well, it isn't. I think there are two reasons for this. First, it is not easy to cover most Dylan songs. Graham Nash left the Hollies over his not wanting to take on an album of songs from `Mr. Dylan'. While great covers of Beatles songs abound, only Jimi Hendrix' version of `All Along the Watchtower' gives the kind of chills that Dylan imparts on his own compositions. Second, I think Baez simply is not a very good vocal stylist. I think she has great equipment and she really knows how to use it to translate notes to voice. But that translation simply seems to have no emotion behind it.

I actually always preferred the singing of Baez major rival, Judy Collins, in spite of the fact that Collins simply does not have the vocal quality you hear in Baez' singing. Collins' voice is, frankly, a little weak. I heard both perform live, and this confirmed my impressions of their recorded works. Baez has simply never done as good a job as Collins does on, for example the album `In My Live'.

As I listen to these songs now, I hear virtually no difference in intonation than I get from her performances of 500-year-old English folksongs.

If you really like to listen to Joan Baez, you can't go wrong, but prepare to be less than overwhelmed by the quality of the interpretation. You would do better to add to your collection of Dylan CDs.

One of the Great Tributes to Bob Dylan!.......2005-03-30

Whether or not you enjoy this remarkable recording would most likely depend upon one or both of two factors: 1) do you like the woman's very distinctive voice applied to the rough-and-tumble verse and attitude of a Bob Dylan song? and 2) do you enjoy country-style folk music played by top-notch, improvisational musicians who are willing to step back just enough to allow the singer to maintain center stage? If you are a Joan Baez fan AND a country music fan (who can get past the obvious contradictions between those two musical worlds) then go directly to the nearest music store, or get this CD right here and now online. I am a Joan Baez fanatic who is ALSO a big Bob Dylan fan. I know several Dylan lovers who hate Joan Baez, and they can't stand this record. I think they are simply unable to get past a chauvinistic, macho dislike for the feminine and the beautiful in their music. Does Baez strip some of Dylan's work of its grit and grime, and therefore some of its power? Perhaps, but I don't give it too much thought anymore, because what Baez brings to the proceedings here, besides her obvious reverance for Dylan's songs, is an ability bring out the MELODIES that Dylan composed, which, with all due respect to the Songwriting Genius, he himself barely sang. Because Baez's precise diction, pronounced vibrato and soaring soprano are rather out of fashion these days, younger listeners may have to make some effort to get used to her style, but close listening (get in the headphones and crank up the volume) and patience, should pay off in the end. I should mention, too, the deepening in Joan's voice that began to occur around this time in her long career. Her ravishing low notes are by turns lovely like a cello and then somewhat nasal and twangy -- perfectly suited to this kind music. Her full range is heard on "Boots of Spanish Leather" and the amazing "Restless Farewell."
Contrary to what another reviewer on this site felt, this album is anything BUT bland! The countrified instrumentation is simply gorgeous throughout, adding something mysterious and haunting to Joan's intense vocals. Listen to how Grady Martin's electric sitar sends a mournful chill into the heart of "North Country Blues," or how a lovely, liquid guitar line shades the melancholy in "One Too Many Mornings," and how Joan can't help but get down with the boys in the band on the rock 'n' roll numbers "Drifters Escape" and "Dear Landlord," because they are both energetic and obviously fun to play. Joan must have been beside herself with joy to be able to sing with these guys and she definitely rose to the occasion, critics be damned. The much lauded rendition of "Love Is Just A Four Letter Word" is indeed a definitive performance, but it is by no means the only reason to buy, as it is equalled several times throughout ANY DAY NOW, most notably on the gospel-styled title song, (complete with a rousing chorus), and the incredible epic "Sad-Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands." There are many subltle pleasures to be discovered with repeated listenings to this album, and after all these years it remains not only my top favorite Joan Baez album, but one of my all-time favorite records, period.

my favorite album ever.......2004-03-19

This beautiful collection of Bob Dylan songs performed by Joan Baez is my favorite album/CD of the since the 1960s. She has a rich powerful voice and beautifully interprets Dylan's poetry and music. There isn't a bad track on the whole CD, although Tears of Rage can get a little tedious. Buy this CD, skip the one by Judy Collins singing Dylan - she just doesn't cut it.

DYLAN REVEALED........2003-11-18

Way back in the early '70's my sister came home from her college classes with a copy of ANY DAY NOW she had borrowed from a friend. He never got it back. Dylan had written so many songs by then you could fill a double album and not even record any of his monster hits. I already knew as a young teenager Dylan was a wordsmith master, but I always had doubts about his musical abilites. Until I heard this album. What Baez does for Dylan's songs with her pure and crytaline voice is to reveal the musical beauty of these songs, the notes Dylan wrote but could not reveal with his limited range. The fact that Baez has a deep understanding and love for these songs is obvious, the fact that she's able to communicate it to the rest of us is her special gift. Her vocals are so assured, her pitching so dead right on, she's able to sing the 4 minute "Tears Of Rage" accapella. And when she's done you realize any instrument would have just gotten in the way. It's a powerful, stunning moment in music. To have the 11 minute "Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands" follow (the album's best cut) with it's country-ish arrangement is to experience one of the best sequentiality in record making. Most of the arrangements lean to the country side of music, as opposed to the folk side, so that there's more of a "bounce" to the album. There is a giant handful of great Dylan songs waiting to be discovered for the uninitiated. And for the hardcore Dylan fan, a revelation.

INSTRUMENTAL!! Don't expect vocals. Other than that, it is a nice collection.

The music is beautiful just for listening. The first CD could be used in a wedding. The 2nd CD contains instrumental versions of the songs which is soothing and peaceful; it could also be used in a wedding, but not for a reception. I did not buy this to use in a wedding - just for the music and I was not disappointed. It's a nice background for meditation, or remembering your own wedding. I just bought a second one for some friends who are getting married. And the price is right.

Classical CD is great, but the other one is horrible........1999-11-17

The first CD is filled with popular classic wedding songs and is really good, but the last CD is music that would make your guests think they were trapped in an elevator filled with easy listening music. I cannot understand why someone would compile those songs for a wedding!
