While the title track may seem, by now, a rather obvious and nostalgic relic, we'd do well to remember that an entire post-baby boom generation has likely never heard it. At 18 minutes, the song remains one of the most hysterical things ever recorded, and many of its politcal barbs can still sting. But the record also contained two far more lyrical pieces: "Chillin' of the Evening" and the gorgeous, sweeping "Highway in the Wind." I have seen Arlo in concert a number of times. This CD is totally brilliant, but to get the full experience you must see him on stage doing these songs.
This CD is a gem. It is funny, insightful, and a just plain joy to listen to. I suggest that the next spaceship we send out of the solar system have this CD on it to show how good Humanity can be.

One day in school, when I was in eighth grade, we had some free time and one of our teachers sat us down in a hallway, Indian style, and played us his record album entitled Alice's Restaurant by Arlo Guthrie. Some of the more "street-smart" children comprehended the complete message of the song; I did not. However, now that I am old and foolish instead of being young and foolish, I think I finally get Arlo's message.
The title track for this CD is a whopping 18 plus minutes; but please don't let that scare you away. The melody is infectiously catchy the very first time you hear it; Arlo plays the guitar so beautifully as he recites the lyrics by speaking them except for the main chorus which he does sing.
Arlo tells the true story of how he got caught for littering; and he then goes on to tell his audience the unexpected ramifications of his littering when he went to enlist in the armed forces. Arlo tells his story with a folksy style that you will find to be thoroughly endearing and engaging; most people won't have any trouble paying attention to his story. Arlo uses this number to poke fun at authority; and the audience enjoys it very much. People have written that this number is extremely funny; and they are right! And yes, Arlo delivers the message that he is opposed to the Vietnam War in an exceptionally artistic, creative way through this song. Arlo must be very gifted; he crafted this excellent song in such a way that you enjoy his song even if you don't agree with him!
This is a live recording; the crowd laughs at every joke Arlo cracks as he tells his story. The laughter appears to have been edited in that the ending of the laughter is slightly abrupt--but, then again, who cares? Arlo delivers "Alice's Restaurant" so flawlessly you won't mind this very minor flaw one bit.
Other tracks on this CD deserve attention, too. Some people fall so much in love with the song "Alice's Restaurant" that they never listen to the other tracks on this album. "Chilling Of The Evening" allows Arlo to express his horror at the events of the Vietnam War; the melody shines with a solid musical arrangement. Arlo sings this very well; and the guitar carries the melody beautifully.
"Ring-Around-A-Rosy Rag" tells the story about a friend of Arlo's who almost gets arrested in a park, presumably for using drugs although the reason is never clearly given. The melody sounds distinctly like the music from the pop music of the 1920s and 1930s; I predict you will at least love the melody of this number. Love that piano playing! SMILE
"The Motorcycle Song" reflects much forethought as Arlo rhymes "pickle" with "cycle" which here is pronounced "cicle" as in the word "icicle." Once again Arlo expresses his anti-war sentiment as he also says that he merely wants to be free, enjoying life by riding on his motorcycle to see America and his friends.
Overall, Alice's Restaurant is a vehicle for Arlo Guthrie to express his anti-Vietnam war sentiment; and so many people cherished this album when it first came out on LP that it still sells well today. I recommend this CD for Arlo's fans, fans of folk music and anyone who wants to experience the creative force of a genius who used the power of words and music for self-expression.

I bought it for the title song for a nostalgic expereince (still makes me laugh out loud) and then was surprised how much I liked the music that followed as well.

I purchase it for one song, Alice's Restaurant. It is well worth the money and is great for laughs. I highly recommend it for anyone that remembers the song.

This classic album has a little of everything - a ragtime in Ring-Around-the-Rosy-Rag, a fun silly tune in the Motorcycle song, a lot of great ballads, and of course the legendary title track. Though a bit dated, the message remains the same and will never grow old.
"I'm sittin here on the group-dubbya bench because you want to know if I'm moral enough to join the army, burn women, kids, houses and villages after being a litterbug!"

WHAT CAME AROUND - COMES AROUND AGAIN! TALK ABOUT TIMING!!! Though all the other songs on this album were rerecorded in the studo, in 1995 Arlo returned to the church near Stockbridge, Massachusetts where he originally wrote Alice's Restaurant. On the 30th anniversary of the massacree, on Thanksgiving, before a live audience, in the place where it all began, he does "Alice" again with some historic footnotes added to the original, creating a return to the scene of the crime in ways that make this version of the famous record the one to stand for all time.

40 Years Later & Still Good.......2007-03-30
What can I say ? 40 years ago Arlo Guthrie wrote Alice's Restaurant and it was fun and interesting and a little bit naughty. To listen to Arlo re-sing and remaster this classic album is a real treat. His voice has not changed one bit and he adds just a little bit of humour to the new version of Alice that stirs up a little giggle and makes you realise that if you can have a sense of humour about religion, or politics or yourself then the world is a better place. Anything that can make you smile in this day and age has won my vote. Arlo Guthrie has done the world of folk music proud over the years and is still going strong. And who would have thought that his Motorcycle Song would be still so good after all this time ? It sounds like this album was only recorded yesterday. A timeless classic to make you smile.

This is an incredible CD in which Arlo updated Alice's Restaurant! It is definitely worth purchasing for any Arlo fan!!!

There was a time when it seemed Arlo Guthrie's impact would outstrip that of his legendary dad, Woody Guthrie. For, in the waning days of the '60s, Woody was largely a cult figure, whereas his longhaired offspring had parlayed (largely by accident) a droll, drawn-out talking blues number called "Alice's Restaurant Massacree" into a hit album and acclaimed film. These days, Arlo is a respected journeyman folksinger while Woody, in death, has become a towering cultural icon. This soundtrack captures the son's shining moment. Taken from Arthur (Bonnie and Clyde) Penn's film adaptation of Arlo's tongue-in-cheek tune ("You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant"), this soundtrack presents an agreeable assortment of pleasures, including Arlo's title track, jaunty acoustic incidental music by credited soundtrack composer Gary Sherman, and a painfully earnest version of Joni Mitchell's "Songs to Aging Children" by someone named Tigger Outlaw. This deluxe-edition CD is fleshed out by 10 extra tracks, including Pete Seeger's versions of Woody's "Pastures of Plenty" and "Car Song," the latter with Arlo along for the ride. --Steven Stolder

The knock here is that the soundtrack version of Alice's R is not as good as the one on his first lp. I totally disagree. Arlo's dead pan timing on this version is far better than the original, live cut off his first album. Critics tend to dismiss soundtracks, but this is a gem, from the epic to the instrumental miniatures, to the over-the-top version of Songs To Aging Children (I don't really think that's Joni in disguise though) to the Pete Seeger to the movie tidbits. It adds up to Arlo's best. Gosh, he barely looks 20 in the cover photo.

Tigger Outlaw IS Joni Mitchell.Probably something to do with recording contracts at the time.She just used a made up name.This was not at all uncommon back then. "Songs to Aging Children"is worth the price of the CD by itself, in my opinion. How can you price something so exquisite?

Arlo's great song about his friend Alice's restaurant not only is a hit on it's own terms, it was made into a wonderful movie which turned the song into a reality.
This movie soundtrack features Arlo's creative works and features folk greats such as Pete Seeger (performing Woody Guthrie's "Pastures of Plenty" & "The Car Song") and Joni Mitchell's "Songs to Aging Children" performed by Tigger Outlaw.
Who can forget Arlo's adventures of the Thanksgiving dinner (that couldn't be beat) at Ray and Alice's church in Housatonic, Mass. This CD makes wonderful traveling music and is recommended to Arlo fans young and old alike.

This is the greatest album in the world! Arlo's tale of woe in the Alice's Restaurant Massacre is beyond human humor. Joni Mitchell is featured singing the most beautiful rendition of "Song's to Aging Children" she recorded. Also includes medleys with long time Guthrie family friend Pete Seeger. Great just great...
