Toshi rocks! While fusing the soul-stirring spirit of gospel with the folkier strains of social conscience, the expansively ebullient Reagon and ace producer Craig Street (Cassandra Wilson, Joe Henry) have forged a fresh sound that is both contemporary and beyond category. "Mountain Top" and "Ballad of the Broken Word" suggest Tracy Chapman as an Indigo Girl, but such an equation fails to account for the irresistibly engaging pop of "Slippin' Away" and "The Ones Who Love You," the rock propulsion of "I Hate/I Love," and the languid, intimate transformation of the Cars' "Just What I Needed" (in stripped-down duet with Marc Anthony "Chocolate Genius" Thompson). Reagon's vocal warmth throughout reflects a big heart, while her razor-sharp band cuts a series of indelible grooves. Reagon's musical development continues to honor her familial legacy (mother Bernice Johnson Reagon is Sweet Honey in the Rock's matriarch; godmother Toshi Seeger is Pete Seeger's wife), but here she's claiming some artistic turf that is all her own. --Don McLeese

Who Knew?.......2007-06-10
I had never heard of Toshi until he came up on my Pandora Station and thank goodness for that.
He has a refreshing, soulful R&B flavor with a few great duets. It's a must have!!!!!
Totally Awesome.......2006-12-05
Toshi is underestimated in the US. This hidden secret is an international delight I stumbled upon while visiting in Japan and Australia. His vocals remind me of a mixture of John Legend, Eric Benet, and Babyface. The beats nice and his vocals are smooth. I gave this CD 4 stars because 10 songs is not enough.
Toshi Does It Again! .......2005-12-30
This CD is fabulous. Being African American I had my doubts when someone first told me about Toshi. I bought his CD "Sunshine Moonlight" and I was very impressed. This CD delivers the same soulful mix and a distinctive style that Toshi is known for. Don't pass up this great CD!
Don't Knock It Until You've Heard It.......2005-11-07
Got a tip from a friend (in Canada) who heard this album, showing her apparent appreciation, and I looked at her in contempt because all of the R&B singers that I know of are either African-American, or occasionally, White. So seeing this Japanese guy singing...I had my doubts.
I had to hear this album more than once, and found that I can step to it--a plus. Another one is that he's worked with Mos Def and Angie Stone. My fave tracks are: "Breaking Through", "Beating of My Heart"--almost this whole album! I also heard that he's got other albums out there. I can't wait to hear them!
Solid breezy, as usual, for those who can't get enough Toshi.......2005-01-03
Toshi Kubota's third album delivers more of the same -- solid, breezy loverman ballads -- and if you're a Toshi Kubota fan, that's a good thing. Toshi's style and vocal delivery hasn't changed much since his American debut about nine years ago. And the album delivers what's now expected of Kubota -- funky, finger-snapping, at times head nodding beats and keyboards, over which he delivers his breezy, almost thin vocals. Fans don't go to Kubota CDs expecting the deep baritones of a Jaheim, but rather, the higher, lighter tones as that of Babyface or Maxwell. And that may be where the only quibble lies with Kubota -- his voice is somewhat thin, but he makes up for his somewhat flat voice with style, light wails and coos. And you can tell he's trying. Apologies for making qualifications for his style, but as an R&B singer of Japanese descent, Kubota delivers the goods. No, he won't be threatening the hold that a Maxwell, Babyface or R. Kelly have on their fans, but for a man of Japanese descent recording R&B, he delivers solid CD after CD that easily rivals that of the singers on the middle tier of R&B. And if you want a nice, breezy walk of a CD, "Time to Share" is your bag. It may not pass heavy scrutiny, but its mellow, jazzy feel will have you tapping or humming along in short time. It's like a cool, nighttime ride on a Japanese subway along the electro lights of the Tokyo, or perhaps a cool walk in the blue of night on the jazzy side of town in your nightlife cities in Anycity, America. Think nightlife, club soul, and not deep, down, gritty R&B, and you'll be playing it repeatedly. And let your friends listen, as well, because it's "time to share" Kubota's name with them.

Album Description
On Have You Heard, Toshi Reagon calls the listener back to the heart of rock and roll with a voice overflowing with raw emotion. Reagon's Righteous Babe Records debut is her sixth full-length album overall.
Supporting her earthy tenor and amazing ability to bend the guitar strings are a few members of her live band BigLovely; Fred Cash on bass, Robert "Chicken" Burke on drums, Adam Widoff on guitar, and Catherine Russell on mandolin and vocals. With her all-star players behind her and producer Craig Street (Me'Shell NdegeOcello, kd lang, Joe Henry, Cassandra Wilson) and mixer Elliot Mazer (Santana, Neil Young) at the helm, Have You Heard drives deep into your soul.
From her rock platform Toshi easily jumps from funk to country, spirituals to folk, taking any style, updating it and making it her own with ease. Genre bending is her specialty - take the gospel-tinged fingerpicking melody "Have You Heard" or the soft balladry of "You", the funky "OOH WEE" or the original interpretation of Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel".
An uncompromising brew of artistic exuberance and exceptional musical talent, Have You Heard can work as the soundtrack to a house party or an introspective walk in the park.

Great Blues music........2007-05-20
This was recommended to me because I love Blues music and couls listen to it all day/night long. I am from kansas City and often visit Blues / Jazz clubs and festivals. This is defintely Blues all the way through.
I have heard and I am impressed.......2006-01-15
This CD was released late in 2005 and it seems to have been overlooked by critics and fans. I can imagine what a tour de force Toshi must be live. On this album Toshi is out in front with clarity and power that puts her in a league all by herself. Every track on this CD is good. And wow what a take on Heartbeak Hotel!
the album we've been waiting for........2005-11-08
"have you heard" comes closest to sounding like a LIVE TOSHI show of any of her albums to date. (if you haven't seen her live, you have no idea. there is NOTHING like it in the world. her albums haven't ever come close.) 22 hours and buidling blues are haunting, electrifying and the most soulful rock tracks... ever. its crazy how the whole album feels both vintage and like some prophetic musical offering from the future. (fyi there aren't any hip-hop sounding tracks on the cd, so i don't know what that other review is talking about) i can't play anything else on my playlist these days. gorgeous.
STICK TO YOUR STRENGTHS!!.......2005-10-27
THIS IS A GOOD CD AT BEST. THE SELECTIONS THAT FEATURE THE ACOUSTIC GUITAR ARE BY FAR THE SUPERIOR ONES. THERE IS NO NEED FOR HER TO ATTEMPT HIP-HOP FLAVORED TUNES...IT'S NOT IN HER! MY ADVICE TO TOSHI IS TO BE YOURSELF AND LET GOD DO THE REST. HE GAVE YOU EVERYTHING YOU NEED!

This re-release is worth your money..........2007-03-03
I already owned the original release, but I got curious about the bonus tracks on this new reissue. I wasn't dissapointed. It includes her very-hard-to-find vinyl release "I Forgot the Title," and it's REALLY GOOD. Shojo Toshi was already a very solid album, but the addition of six new tracks makes this edition well worth it. Go sell your old copy and pick this new one up.
Odd and playful electronic pop.......2006-08-20
Shojo Toshi was the second album from artist Tujiko Noriko, and when it arrived on Mego Records almost five years ago now, people thought it somewhat strange that an album with such a pop (relatively speaking) bent could find a home on the label known for its mind-bending laptop artists. Sadly, the album went out of print, but now it's back, remastered and expanded with an extra 5 tracks from a 12" release of hers that's even harder to find.
Although it's not my favorite album of hers (that would be From Tokyo to Naiagara), Shojo Toshi is a perfect introduction to her world of skewed electronic pop and still contains some of her best songs to date. After the shorter instrumental opening track of "Endless End," one of those aforementioned amazing tracks follows in "White Film." Comprised of only soft woodwinds, some electronic tones, and vocals, the track is far from simple, as Noriko takes multiple layers of each then pulls them apart and puts them back in beautiful ways, creating a lovely tension by breaking apart each element at one point in the track.
"Machi No Kakera" is another standout, feeling more like a collage or a musical haiku than a traditional song. Shifting from filtered orchestra to quiet glitch-touched ballad and finally falling away with a touch of piano, it's a total stunner. Elsewhere, the album is more playful, as on the super crunchy, hip-hop inspired "Bebe," where overdriven beats dance with chopped-up vocals, chimes, and hand percussion.
"Mannequin Surfer" takes several of the elements introduced earlier in the album and combines them for another unique piece as hissy beat programming mingles with both traditional instrumentation like piano and flutes that all seem to fight with digitally-deconstructed dopplegangers of themselves as the song progresses. The vocals of Noriko, of course, are one of the major reasons for the success of the release as well. Moving from mournful to playful, at times she lets her voice come through the mix clean, but she also uses her voice as textures and rhythmic elements throughout, expanding her palette even further. Although they don't seem quite as developed, the bonus track are definitely a nice addition to the release, providing an expanded glimpse of her work from roughly the same time period. If you haven't heard this unique artist yet and are curious, this is as good of any place to start.

Since Toshi Kubota's a Japanese dude with dreads and a Superfly-style falsetto, it'd be awfully easy to write him off as a can't-we-all-just-get-along novelty act--if it weren't for the fact that the guy's so funky you'd swear he just stepped off George Clinton's mothership. Kubota's second English language release finds the singer-songwriter in a passionate embrace with the foundations of funk, and features appearances by R&B and hip-hop heavyweights such as Roots rimshot master Ahmir Thompson, chanteuse Angie Stone, rapper Pras, and Lucy Pearl's Raphael Saadiq. The title track--with its sly, sexy bassline and playfully sardonic lyrics ("I'm not your chardonnay / I'm not your sushi bar / I'm nothing but your love")--serves as a quirky homage to Curtis Mayfield's classic "Pusherman", while the hip-hop-infused "Never Turn Back" is pure, soulful bliss, a song so upliftingly joyful that you'll be booty-shakin' on Cloud Nine. --Sylvia W. Much underrated.......2004-08-02
This CD was a sleeper when released....but I'm surprised that it has remained so. Sure, I wouldn't have expected much from someone so removed from the US urban scene, but this brother has a groove. This is definitely a must listen to CD!
Room For Improvement.......2004-06-21
I have enjoyed Toshi's music for years, and have seen him perform at clubs in NYC. He is an amazing performer, a brilliant vocalist, and can hold his own with the likes of many of today's soul/r&b heavyweights. However, this particular cd lacks the sparks of some of his earlier releases. This happens to everyone, in the music business and other industries, from time to time. That does not mean a person, in this case Toshi, is a bad singer. Perhaps he would be more popular to an American audience if he wrote with other successful songwriters. I believe anything is possible in the music business, and there is definitely room in the business for a hitter like Toshi. Maybe he's trying too hard to please listeners with prejudiced ears, maybe not. I hope his next release shows more of his personal singing style and a relaxed ease in his songwriting. He's obviously done his homework, and has demonstrated his talent. I hope he can let it flow, and let the naysayers groove on too.
I'm a big fan of Kubota's, but . . ........2001-11-20
I honestly thought Toshi(nobu) Kubota would make it big with this album, but when I heard it, I have to say I was just a wee-bit disappointed. I think he sings much better in Japanese than he does in English. His lyrics on this album have shown improvement from Sunshine, Moonlight, but I honestly think he could benefit from someone checking over what he writes before he puts it out on the market. His voice can be beautiful with certain types of songs (slow songs where he's NOT wailing, for example) but the nasally-pitched sound can be annoying after a while. Toshi needs to write songs he can SING. I also don't understand what the deal is with his lack of originality when he writes English-language songs. He has taken samples from and makes lyrical references to virtually every major contributor of soul music and he does so unabashedly. I'm a sista who's been listening to Toshi's music for about 10 years. While I agree than anyone can have soul, Toshi just ain't there, yet. I would recommend trying some of his Japanese albums FIRST before you hear him singing in English.
Mixed feelings..........2001-10-09
I must agree with some of the things pointed out by other reviewers for this album. The singing is weak, some lyrics are absolutely absurd ("I'm not your sushi, I'm not your daddy, I'm nothing but your love...", or "You smell like pu-pu"), and the cover version included here is not really great. Also true that there must be a bunch of artists out there that could do as well as Toshi Kubota, but just don't get the chance to prove themselves. The fact that T.K. is Japanese is certainly a factor that pushed his label to use this marketing argument (especially with the interest from the public for artists also from Japan, such as Mondo Grosso, Yasushi Ide, the Kyoto Jazz Massive, Satoshie Tomiie, etc.). It's exotic, but doesn't necessarily mean it's good. He's a star in Japan ? Good for him...
Some stronger points : "Masquerade" has a Lonnie Liston Smith feeling, "Someday" is a very nice ballad with a Stevie Wonder flavour. "Till she comes" has a nice mid tempo R&B beat. "Shame" sounds like one of those ballads from the Average White Band (remember them ?). "I just can't get enough", "It's over" and "Gently" make the journey acceptable, and at times even close to pleasant. The cover sleeve is also nice...
The man definitely has his idols he copies (or is it a tribute he renders to them ?). But again, he doesn't come close to the quality and genius THEY showed. This is why I can't decide if this really is a terrible album or not. I would probably recommend you to listen to it if you can, but keeping in mind it really isn't the album of the year. As a comparison, Rashaan Patterson has two much better albums worth spending money on.
FAIR.......2001-05-30
With consistent vocals ranging from Average White Band to Eric Benet, Toshi Kubota has managed to provide a somewhat refreshing twist to R & B music. Most of the tracks are acceptable and even stand out amidst his contemporary artists. There are subtle attempts to provide a wink to Curtis Mayfield's vocal stylings. The major shortcoming is in the freshness of the approach. Many stateside artists could have pulled this album off without the same fanfare, but the fact remains he is Japanese. The track "Body Bounce" is weak at best. The acknowledgment of Roger Troutman and his creativity is the only saving grace. I am sure Mr. Troutman and his fans would have appreciated it more had there been any funky interpolation of "More Bounce to the Ounce."

Album Description
The depth of Toshi Reagon's songwriting skills is matched only by the range and versatility of her voice, which is the lead vocal, the back-up, and often the rhythm section. With an acoustic guitar and occasional percussion accompaniment, Reagon's voice soars, and her sound is at once intimate and electrifying. This music is rhythm-infused: as much gospel and blues as hip-hop. It is the sound of Reagon's roots--gospel, folk, and blues--merged with her brand of urban acoustic. Kindness is an intimate encounter with Reagon's heritage . Kindness is...dominated by Reagon's fiery commitment to life and justice. -Out
Customer Reviews:
A little scattered, but still wonderful........2002-07-25
Toshi Reagon begins this recording with a cover of "Misty Mountain." It's wonderful: using only her voice and guitar, she produces an intimacy and profundity making the song unforgettable. The next couple songs are in much the same vein, making the cd cohesive, of course, but it also becomes, for me, very moving on a personal level. She connects, what can I tell you! There is a sweet, plaintive yet hopeful, and entirely earnest feeling to this cd. "I Call You" is just lovely, and "Darlin'" will have you humming and smiling all week I promise! I think toward the end of the cd, however, the "mood" she seemed to create in the beginning flounders. That's a shame. I almost wish, for the sake of creating that "perfect album," she'd cut a few tracks out. However, being a fan of Toshi, that idea is at the same time unthinkable!
This cd is certainly mellower than the other ones she has thus far, so if you are thinking of getting one of her cds and prefer an intimate, laid back approach (for the first half of the cd at any rate), grab this one first. I'm pretty confident you'll eventually get all her stuff! If you think you might like something with a little more kick, get "The Righteous Ones." No matter what Toshi Reagon does, it is politically, socially, and spiritually meaningful and infused with the musical and lyrical traditions African Americans have given us all. It's also distinctly *her,* and she's one of the best singer/songwriters out there right now. You really can't go wrong with her.
P.S. Fans of Sweet Honey in the Rock will be glad to hear they make an appearance here (of course!).
a powerhouse of a voice.......2000-01-08
I first saw her in Pittsburgh opening for Billy Bragg at a Pro Union convention, what a fantastic voice. I immediately went out the next day and bought "Kindness" After 2 years it is still one of my favorites
Toshi's Best Yet!!!.......1999-03-06
I have had the personal pleasure of listening to Toshi sing and play acoustic guitar since we went to high school together. I haven't had any personal contact with her since, however, through her new releases I have heard a child become a woman through her music. When her mom, Bernice, does back up vocals for Toshi, the duo is strictly unbelievable! Kindness is a MUST HAVE!

Gotta have it!.......2005-02-28
I heard this album about a year ago from a friend who is a prolific music collector (I'm NOT). It grabbed me immediately and every track seemed better that the last. I had never heard of this artist and I have no idea why she is not a major superstar yet. Maybe because she doesn't look like Sheryl Crow. At any rate, I decided I had to have this CD and it is still one of my favorites. Toshi has an amazing voice, along with some great harmonies. The sound is very unique, but not challenging to listen to. "Slippin' Away" is a great track, and the cover of the Cars "Just What I Needed" was a nice surprise.

She's got a great big wonderful voice that fills you up to the brim. Give the samples for "Big Love" and "Mountain Top" a try. You'll be glad you did.

I saw Toshi and Big Lovely at the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival in August and they were my favorite band of the festival. I danced the entire time they played and was completely mesmerized by their strong, contemporary, rocking, and unique sound. I was completely impressed and that is why I searched for their new cd to purchase. If you love rock, funk, soul, blues, you will love Toshi Reagon and Big Lovely.

For those who know her through previous recordings or as the daughter of Bernice Johnson Reagon (of Sweet Honey in the Rock), Toshi has a shock or two in store. Her previously acoustic blues- and gospel-based work has only hinted at the muscular rock and frenzied funk of her fourth and most freewheeling release. Her musical touchstones now include Talking Book-era Stevie Wonder, Prince, Rufus, and Living Colour at their most raging. The modern gospel intro to "Real Love," Toshi's first recording with Sweet Honey, quickly detonates into full fury and "Drive It Home," with its uninhibited sexuality, comes on like Chaka Kahn fronting Lenny Kravitz's band. Reagon tends to mix her metaphors ("I'm just a little bit corny / Smiling like a baby with no troubles rumbling / And all cards on the table"), but musical and lyrical spontaneity this celebratory and emotionally wild is as hard to fault as it is to resist. --Roy Kasten
Customer Reviews:
Confident-with-attitude smoothness.......2007-03-06
This album is exquisite. Toshi Reagon coos and growls with a velvety intensity rarely heard. The collection is diverse in a positive way. The band is clearly comprised of front-of-the-line, no-apologies pros. And the back-up singers -- if I die and get within earshot of heaven, these are the voices I hope to hear. Just like Reagon, the voices supporting her have a confident-with-attitude smoothness that makes it insulting to call them angelic. Depending upon my mood, my favorite picks from the album change. Although, I admit, the anthem-like title song,"The Righteoous Ones," does draw me back to the CD to get re-aquainted with Toshi again and again.
Darling.......2001-09-05
Although I don't feel as strongly about the rest of the album, "Darling" is a heartbreaking masterpiece. Yes, you've felt this way, and if you haven't, I'm sorry.
A Masterpiece........2000-07-11
I don't have enough words to communicate to you the energy, craft and passion that Toshi Reagon puts into this album. It's one of the best I've heard in the last several years -- the range of genres she builds upon is breathtaking, mixing rock, blues, gospel, 70s soul, and just about everything else. Her songwriting and performances are both moving on an emotional level, and high-energy enough to get your feet moving too! "Real Love" is an immediate standout, but virtually every song here has something to recommend it. Those who know about this album or who have caught her live are lucky indeed.
The Righteous Ones Will Not Bore You.......2000-05-08
I heard this album palying in the background at my local Silver Platters. I had to have it.
"Real Love" builds slowly, and you know something big is going to happen. It does. Sweet Honey and the Rock kicks in and they are gone.
Next up is "There Are" great vocal work and a great groove.
"Drive It Home Tonite", you may not want to play on a first date, but more like around the second or third one. This would make Tina or Chaka blush. With envy.
Only a couple of clinkers, most notably the hyperfrenetic ending of "Like it That way". But she more than makes up for it on the bittersweet "Yes It was"
And all that happens on the first half of the album.
With as much genre-crossing blues/folk/gospel/rock as she does, Toshi Reagon has created a album that will appeal to a broad variety of tastes. And hopefully find some airplay as well. Highly recommended.
A treasure for those who love contemporary music.......2000-04-22
Toshi Reagon is the daughter of Bernice Reagon Johnson, the co-founder and spiritual leader of Sweet Honey in the Rock, the all female, blues, gospel, soul, roots, rock, a capella group based in DC. Toshi's second release, "The Righteous Ones" is very much a music lover's kind of music - smart, well composed, well produced, unpredictable, thoughtful and funky.
