I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

The person who wrote the review below is wrong : the "Alone" album was recorded and released in mono sound, in 1957. "Judy in Love" was Garland's first album recorded and released in stereo, in 1958.

The sound on this disc is spectacular. The original session tapes were used, for the best sound possible. It is glorious sound here, folks.

Pehaps the person that wrote the review below is thinking of the previous two-fer of "Judy in Love" from England, a few years back, paired with the "Judy" album. That CD sounded very flat and dry.

Get this new and improved disc, and you'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars Finally "Alone" on CD!.......2003-10-01

I just received this Judy "double bill" and I can only say it's GREAT!! "Alone" was always one of my favorite Judy albums, and I am more than pleased to have it on CD now. The sound is not stereo, as another reviewer point out, but it never was recorded in stereo. I have the old vinyl, and that's mono too, but also pretty worn, after all these years. The liner notes actually are pretty good too. The original covers are reproduced, with the original liner notes reprinted, AND some fresh liner notes about this re-issue. There, you can read that the "alone" recordings are from 1957, and that "Judy in Love" is from 1958, and was her first stereo album for Capitol.

So why is "alone" my favorite Judy album? Maybe simply because it was one of my first encounters with Judy, when I was 17 years old. I didn't realize at the time that the selection of songs is pretty unusual. It's not the repertoire she sang a lot in her live and TV shows. I love the mostly subdued pathos on this album, although she does belt it out occasionally, in her own inimitable way. The songs are about 'surviving on your own', and some times about finding your inner strength, in a bittersweet way. The album is not very cheerful, but it does make me feel good, in a sentimental way. The arrangements are very good, just right, in the 'proper' fifties style. The strings have a very warm quality, which wasn't always the case in those days. There is also a beautiful large choir singing in the background on some tracks.
Some of the songs are very unknown, which makes this album special too. Happy New Year, for instance, is a beautiful torch song, written over a very slow version of Old Lang Syne in minor key; a real gem of a song! Blue Prelude is also a great song, so don't be discouraged by the titles you may not know.
All in all, a 'must have' for any Judy fan, but also a wonderful introduction if you want to get acquainted with Judy's singing. "Judy in Love" is an excellent example of her warm joyful singing, while "Alone" gives you all those wonderful torch songs. A balanced package, with a passionate Judy in great voice!!

Let me rant. This CD has 2 albums on it. 1 is mono and the other stereo!? I have these albums on records and they are both stereo. I feel ripped off. Also, these albums do not sound anywhere like the records in quality. In fact, they sound very boring and lacking of any sort of life. Judy did very big, exciting production numbers and the sound on this CD makes them sound stale and dead. I returned this CD and demanded my money back. The store clerk said I wasn't the only one. Thumbs way down.

JUDY IN LOVE is perhaps Garland's greatest studio album. A superb collaboration with Judy in wonderful voice, and arranger Nelson Riddle at the top of his form. Inexplicably, this album is only now making its CD debut in the U.S. Capitol Records seemingly had no interest in releasing it themselves, so they've sublicensed it to S&P Records, who have done a terrific mixing and remastering job. Comparing the sound to a recent UK import is overwhelmingly impressive. The UK release sounds mediocre, and this new issue belies its having been recorded 44 years ago.
JUDY IN LOVE is paired with her monaural ballad album ALONE, which was arranged and conducted by Gordon Jenkins. The two albums together are a distinct contrast and yet only show the versatility and mastery of Garland. The highlight of the ALONE tracks is Jenkins' schmaltzy, yet irresistable I'VE GOT A RIGHT TO SING THE BLUES. ALONE was previously issued on CD by Capitol years ago, but has been long out of print, so this collection is a dream come true for Garland fans.

The 5 Star rating is for the recordings and the way they've been beautifully produced. It does not, however, represent a true rating for the package itself, which has been saddled with awful,
amateurish liner notes which are so poorly written that it's a blatant insult to Garland. What a shame the producers who took such care in creating such a great sounding album, didn't bring the same kind of excellence to the accompanying package. This should not detract anyone from buying this CD, but buyers looking for an interesting commentary on the legendary lady and these specific tracks will have to go elsewhere.

A beautiful compilation of two classic, original "Judy" albums. These are two of the six studio albums she recorded for Capitol in the fifties, and these are probably the best. While Judy's vocal tone is not at its best on "Judy in Love", the song selections and her interprative genius make up for the slight vocal imperfections. "More Than You Know", "I Am Loved" and "By Myself" are absolute delights, and are clearly definitive versions of these songs. In addition, the ballads shine with passion and tenderness. "Alone" is mostly filled with similarly tender songs, and on this one Garland is in fine, full voice throughout. "Little Girl Blue" is a particular standout, and the addition of the never before released "Then You've Never Been Blue" is a special treat for fans and newcomers. Popular singing doesn't come any better than this.

I bought this CD for one song "Get Wet's Just So Lonely".
It is the album version and not the original single version as claimed on the cover. The original single version does fade out before the funny change of key part at the end.
Otherwise the CD is OK. I am still looking for the original single version of the song.

I have to say that I like Rhino and Varese Sarabande's CDs so much more that the slapped-together compilations that I find in the "cheap racks" at Tower (and other stores). This CD has a ton of great '80s hits on it...and the liner notes are really fact-filled, too. Get this and the Rhino New Wave CDs...you'll be set for your '80s fix!

This is a fine complement to Varese's first volume of '80s hits, providing a second helping bona-fide stars (Bangles, Cars, Pat Benatar), and one- (and possibly two-) hit wonders. The latter are particularly valuable, as collecting them on CD, especially the original single mixes, can be tough and pricy. In addition to true one-hit wonders like Dead or Alive ("You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)") and Total Coelo ("I Eat Cannibals"), the song list features bands whose flirtation with chart success only hints at their rich catalog and history. Artists like J. Geils, Devo, Greg Kihn, The Cult, and Love and Rockets all have album catalogs well worth exploring beyond these hits. It's amazing to think back to a time when this much variety - new wave, rock, soul, could all be heard on the same radio station (not to mention a time when MTV played videos end-to-end). A generous 18 tracks make this a good party record, and song-by-song chart info and liner notes fill out the story for collectors.

    Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.

    Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

    Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.

    John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. Modersn classical music , I said? What the hell is that?My husband kept playing bits and pieces of adams for me, and more and more i found myself amazed. and swayed. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career,and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China,the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer,which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included.     I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
    Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.

    As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.

    That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.

    I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.

    I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.

    If you were expecting this album to be like all the other Voltaire albums, think again. It is heartfelt, honest, and emotional. It's definetly the cd your parents will love. Highlights on this album include "Crusade", "Goodnight Demonslayer", and my absolute favorite, "The Happy Song". If you're looking for something different, pick this one up.

    The first time I listened to this cd I knew that I would be listening to it more times then the number of "dark & deep" poems goths write every year. I couldn't get over the how wonderful The Cure's Love Song was done. I myself like it more then The Cure ( don't hurt me). I think that this cd is all around the coolest thing ever. Buy it. or be miserable. FOREVER!!!

    Alright this is not necicarirly a review of the album, but more a review of Voltaire and his band as musiccians and artists. First of all, I have to say I love these guys, but there is nothing deeply deeply deppresing or dark or "gothic" about them. It seems to me to be more of an explosive emotional and witty energy and a positive and joyful release of the sadness that all humans can feel at any point in their lives, not the sadness those condescending goth kinds feel.
    Secondly as you may have already realized, as much as I enjoy this music, I am not a gothic scenester. I do listen to bands that some may consider goth such as Joy Division, Bauhaus, The Cure, and Siouxsie & the Banshees, to name a few. However I believe the gothic tag only hinders the creativity and acceptability of these bands. They where staple of the what was the current post-punk sound, an ambient and tribal implosion of what used to be punk and what one sees when they look at a painting by Salvador Dhali or Andy Warhaul. Their potential to evolve to greatness was so immense in there time, and while some have achieved that greatness (Joy Division, in only two albums I might add, and Siouxsie & the Banshees, as cheese as there lyrics where) and some have not (The Cure, take a look at there self titled and see what I mean) that they could have been so much better had this gothic stamp not been plastered all over there collective faces.
    Now all or the aforementioned bands began as they logical offspring of a scene that was splitting at the seams. The punk scene. After punk died, and it did die, there came hardcore and post-punk or what is more often than not reified to as the original goth. Now while the hardcore punk scene began to evolve and take in a great amount of tough guys, who where more than likely more scared and angry than actually tough, the post-punk scene attracted along with punks who could not let go and did not accept hardcore and artsy types, punks who where a cross between the dance floor types of new wave, David Bowie, the 18th century, and Andy Warhaul. Thus the goth scene began. Not as a type of music but as a following.
    Now, Voltaire clearly loves the goth scene with all his heart, and is argot a true goth. However nothing about his music either represents the music that sprung the scene or the scene in its current state nor dose it express the deep loathing or depressions that so many goths now inject into the scene. Instead his bands music is a fusion of pop music, in a U2 sense, and Gypsy style violins and melodies. Imagine essentially what would be the equivalent of Indie if this where the 18th century. The result is a masterful beauty expressed in a poppy and jammable package.
    Now Voltaire's love of the gothic scene and his band's music acceptance by it; it now being a pretentious confused jumble of stolen genres, dance floors, and moody adolescents unable to grow from their preoccupation with them selves and how bad the feel because they cant seem to grasp the concept of what life is all about that is only trying to prolong it now dyeing and stagnant body until it finds the next art form to latch one to and claim like a parasite; only hurts his evolution as an artist. Now he may be a cynic but where he to step out side himself as he has done many times, and those results where nothing but astounding, he may be able to change the way people listen to music and on a grand scale those people themselves for the better. Where his music to have an even more positive message and scrape the goth tag imagine what he could do.
    Now I dont hate the goth scene, as it started off as what most scenes start off as. That being a positive social group, often fueled by music or other art forms, that offers a place for people to fit in and mature and maintain good social health. However the goth scene, next to the hardcore and metal scenes in music, is a showcase for what happens to scenes if they refuse to die of change for the better. They become stagnant environments where vial villains and rapists of souls lurk along side the vain and damaged. They become place where one is praised for prolonging a lie instead of creating great meaningful things and growing to maturity. Now does that really sound like a healthy environment, and that is exactly what the goth scene has become. This is why Voltaire classification under this scene and it's "genre" only serve to damage the band.
    That having been said this album itself dose offer a great amount of maturity from the bands previous releases. I urge you to pick it up weather a goth or not as you may be pleasantly surprised. Other bands that i would urge you to listen to, where the goth tag only hurts them are Bauhaus, Fields of the Nephilim, The Cure, Joy Division, Siouxsie & the Banshees.

    As far as I know, this is the only one of his CDs with none of his trademark dark humor. Either way, it's fantastic. The only thing I didn't like was the cover of "Love Song", a fairly bad song which I feel has been greatly overplayed.
    Wall of Pride has to be a favorite of mine. Along with this, I'd reccomend "Boo Hoo".

        Black Box may be one of the preeminent record labels for modern composers, but that doesn't mean its music can't be soothing. On The Calm, we get a 17-track sampling of some lesser-heard 20th-century pieces that are all (you guessed it) calming. Paul Honey's atmospheric track from Two Days, Nine Lives sets the opening tone for this disc, while tracks featuring the music of Erik Satie and Olivier Messiaen are a little less predictable but still soothingly meditative. Arvo Pärt's "Spiegel im Spiegel" gives a listener a hint of his "holy minimalism" style of composing; it's a gorgeous piece and well-played by violinist Rebecca Hirsch. John Adams's electronic keyboard-based "Alone ... again or at last" is an odd closer; it sounds more like smooth jazz than classical music. Still, as classical compilations go, this set is one of the most eclectic and interesting available. --Jason Verlinde

        The title of this compilation is incredibly accurate IF you enjoy modern music. It doesn't really fit the traditional, mainstream definition of relaxing music -- nice, quiet Mozart or Vivaldi, for example. It does, however, feature beautiful, powerful, sublime modern music. Each track is a revelation, from the more familiar Messiaen and Satie to the rest of the album, all pieces that I had not heard before. Paul Honey, Joseph Curiale, and James MacMillan all deserve a wider audience. Hopefully, their inclusion on this compilation will help them gain that audience.
